SRS Triggered Skeletons - Uber Elder down! First draft

    Posted: 10 Feb 2019 02:08 PM PST

I just beat my first Uber Elder ever with my own variant of Summon Raging Spirits. I'm far from anything like a pro, this being my second league ever and having a full-time (plus overtime) job, so today was very exciting. This is going to be a short, initial draft of my build to see how interesting the rest of you find it.

    Ultra-brief summary

This is a devoted minion build that deals damage with Summon Raging Spirits (SRS) and Summon Skeleton (Skeles). SRS is your main ability and Skeles are cast via the new "Trigger a Socketed Spell when you Use a Skill" craft mod on a staff (5 Skeles at a time, limit of 10). You use Flame Dash to move quickly and Ball Lightning to apply debuffs (not damage). Everything in the build serves only the following three priorities:

    *Minion DPS
*Your ability to summon the minions efficiently
*Your ability to survive (life and resists)

    Pros and cons

Great damage, fun playstyle for minion lovers
Will go all the way to yellow maps on just 5-links if you're cheap
"Do anything" build, goes all the way with enough investment
Easy leveling with Reverberation Rod and Totem Skeles

Squishy, your primary defensive measure is not getting hit
You have to dodge almost everything in mechanics-heavy fights like Izaru and Uber Elder

    Differences from known SRS builds

More damage, I believe. Better ramp with the initial 5 Skeles up-front. Huge bonus to Vaal Summon Skeletons from ascendancy. Skeles benefit identically from the same stats as SRS and you get to devote all 8 points to damage.

    Why Trigger-cast Skeletons?

Quality of life, mostly. I believe that translates into superior performance for the vast majority of players, myself certainly included. You initiate a pack by shooting GMP Ball Lightning at it, dropping 5 Skeletons in their face and debuffing the whole pack with EE and Ele Weakness. They now have targets and you're free to reposition and start dropping SRS, all in a .34s cast time. Even just a Flame Dash away from danger can poop out 5 Skeletons for you.

Trigger-casting has a 4-second cooldown, letting you maintain max Skeles with minimal resummoning.

    SKILL TREE
Witch Necromancer taking all the minion damage you can, jewel slots, player life, and cast speed. You're ignoring Energy Shield, Armour, and Evasion.

    ESSENTIAL STATS

Any source of minion damage, from passives tree to Jewels, Staff and Helmet, and Ascendancy points. I'm at 551% increased minion damage right now.
Life and Elemental Resistances: as always, hit your 75% caps and stack as much health as you can.
Cast Speed: from passives tree, jewels, and rings and amulet, you want a lot of cast speed to pump out SRS and maneuver quickly.
Physical Damage Reduction: you can get passive Endurance Charges on your rings now, a Longtooth Talisman, and 6% physical taken as fire on your helmet. Stacking armour is not an option in this build so physical damage will be your greatest weakness if you don't grab what you can. I also recommend a Taste of Hate and Basalt flask.

    Necessary Equipment

    The Covenant
Blood Magic for your SRS isn't technically mandatory, but is by far more cost-effective than the alternative. With two auras you'll need a lot of mana regen to pump out 20 Raging Spirits consecutively (which is your goal). Fortunately, The Covenant is one of the cheapest unique chests and a 5-link is affordable by anyone. There are some nice corrupt implicits if you want to get real expensive, especially "+1 to socketed gems".
Important!: The Covenant's default skin is disgusting. If you don't have an armour MTX, buy a skin transfer for it. I use a The Queen's Hunger, it's awesome.

    A Crafted Staff
You're going to have to craft your own Staff. Fortunately, you can start cheap and take it all the way to beating Shaper. In fact, I used a cheap staff all the way up until downing Uber Elder. Eventually, you'll want to spend the money on a nice multi-mod staff, but you'll have to find the crafting recipes and enough currency to make the damn thing.
Cheap Staff: You only need Minion Damage, Cast Speed, and an open suffix to add Trigger-casting. Shrieking/Deafening Essences of Fear will get you faster, but Bound Fossils can get you more Minion Damage. You'll buy a 6-link staff, ilvl83 or higher, and rolling the Essence or Fossil on it and then Scouring until you get something good enough. Took me 30+ Bound Fossils to make one, so have patience. You can use Syndicate crafting or Perfect fossils to bring its quality above 20% to help.
Muti-mod Staff: This one will be expensive, in the order of 7+ Exalts to perfect. It's worth it, though. ilv50 Serpentine or Maelstrom Staff, alt-craft it to have only "+1 to level of Socketed Gems". Make an imprint with Bestiary recipe. Regal it, then Annul it unless you gained t1 Cast Speed off the Regal (nuts lucky lol). If the Annul takes the +1, restore the imprint and make another imprint, try again. Once you have a rare staff with only +1 to Socketed, craft onto it:
Can have multiple Crafted Mods - 2 Exalt (first!)
    Tier 3 Cast Speed - 1 Exalt
    Tier 4 Minion Damage/Life - 4 Chaos
Trigger a Socketed Spell when you Use a Skill - 3 Chaos
+2 to Level of Socketed Support Gems - 2 Exalt

Do not cheap out on any of the mods because they cannot be rerolled without scouring them all. If you don't have +2 to Supports yet, hold off until you do. Don't make the mistake I did of just tossing +% gem quality because I wasn't being careful enough. I still don't have the +2 mod yet (takes farming Catarina a lot), but the gem quality is not a big improvement.
If you don't fully understand the above, take some time to learn multi-mod crafting. Read the wiki, google things, ask questions. The full instructions would take up half this guide if I wrote it all out.

    Grip of the Council
The most damage you can get from gloves, plus health and cold resist and strength. Cheap, too.

    From Dust
Essential to get your Skeles-per-cast up to 5. So cheap you can find one with a good corrupt for less than 10c. I prefer "Cannot be Silenced".

Bone Helmet You need only life, resists, and an open prefix to craft "6% physical damage taken as fire". Find the best one you can afford, don't worry about the implicit. Use Blessed Orbs to get the implicit up to 40% and voila, good head. Everyone likes good head.
Skin transfer recommendation: The Baron, looks MUCH better.

    Other Equipment and needed stats

You'll need 155 Dexterity and 114 Strength, as well as resist caps and good life on every piece.
Boots: 30% or more move speed, Dexterity, high life roll, some resist.
Rings and Amulet: This will be expensive, but I recommend you get a Longtooth Talisman and craft "+1 to minimum Endurance Charges" on each ring. That will amount to 14% straight physical damage reduction, which will do wonders for boss fights. You otherwise want high life rolls, resists, and cast speed or dexterity. The Endurance crafts cost 1 Exalt each so buy good rings before you do (open suffix). Unset Ring: Make sure one of your good rings is an Unset Ring, this is where your Golem will go.
Stygian Vise belt: Life and resists
Jewels: Either a Cobalt with 7% life, 16% minion damage, and 4% Cast Speed (Cast Speed with Fire Skills is almost as good, covers SRS and Flame Dash) (can be expensive), or a Ghastly Eye with +# Max Life, 4% Cast Speed or + to Minion attacks, and % increased Minion Damage if you've used a Minion Skill recently. I do not recommend trying to top off your resists and attributes with Jewels because it's a waste of money, but sometimes you have to for a while. Just don't spend much if you do.

Flasks: I use 2 Eternal Health flasks, 1 Quicksilver, 1 Basalt, and 1 Taste of Hate. I swap the Basalt sometimes for specific map mods. I recommend the 3% life regen per second craft in this slot, but if you're more experienced you probably know how to Flask better than I.

    GEM GROUPS

Summon Raging Spirit: Minion Damage, Melee Physical Damage, Elemental Damage with Attacks, Elemental Focus
Modular support: Melee Splash for mapping, Ruthless for bosses
Technically, a level 4 Empower is best, but barely. Not worth 3 Exalts.

Summon Skeleton/Vaal Summon Skeleton: Minion Damage, Melee Physical Damage, level 4 Empower (worth it this time), Maim, Added Fire Damage
Added Fire might be slightly worse than others, but I choose it (with 23% quality) because of Minion Instability. More on Minion Instability below.
Yes, trigger-casting will only use Summon Skeleton and let you save up Vaal Summon Skeletons.
Use a 20/20 Vaal Skeles gem most of the time, but I recommend you keep a 21/20 non-Vaal gem for boss fights.

(Vaal) Haste and Immortal Call: Cast when Damage Taken (only affects Immortal Call), Increased Duration (affects both Immortal Call and Vaal Haste)
Immortal Call on CwDT is very helpful to avoid sudden deaths, giving you time to reposition. Haste is great for both you and your minions and the Vaal cooldown is very powerful for boss and Syndicate fights.

Hatred and Flame Dash: Faster Casting (only affects Flame Dash), Generosity for Hatred.
Even if Hatred affected you, you wouldn't want the Cold damage because it would interfere with Elemental Equilibrium. Generosity adds a lot of damage to your minions.

Ball Lightning, Elemental Weakness: Greater Multiple Projectiles, Curse on Hit
With this setup, Ball Lightning covers massive aoe and applies both the Elemental Weakness curse and Elemental Equilibrium debuff to all targets. Your minions deal a lot of fire and cold damage, so this is no small bonus.
Use a lv1, 0% quality Ball Lightning gem and do not level it up. The damage is irrelevant, but when enemies reflect elemental damage you can easily kill yourself. There's no reason not to leave it at 1/0, where it reflected damage is also irrelevant.

Lightning Golem: Placed in an Unset Ring, you don't need any supports. Get a lv21 because the Cast Speed buff goes from 9% to 10%. Unfortunately, you'd need to get it up to lv26 to get 11% Cast Speed and I don't believe there's a way to do that. Quality adds health and damage to the Golem, but it's not much health and the damage is irrelevant. The gems are expensive, too, so I think a 21/0 will be fine.

    Minion Instability??

Noob trap, you say? I tried it out for fun and discovered a big benefit. Your Skeles do all the tanking and they're not tanky. You initiate packs with Ball Lightning and 5 Skeles on their faces. The explosion is fire damage and the source is the minion. It actually does a lot of damage.

I tried moving the two points into other damage nodes and found myself getting walled off by Syndicate encounters and Red beasts more often. Minion Instability does work! I urge you to give it a chance if you're skeptical.

    Leveling

Leveling a minion build is easy! Just get your gems whenever available and remember your priorities: minion damage and your own survivability. I have only two specific recommendations:

*Get a Reverberation Rod at lv24 and put your SRS in it. This will carry you all the way into white maps. You'll miss the Spell Echo once you craft your first staff, but that's why you'll need to start stacking Cast Speed.
*Get Spell Totem Support for Summon Skeleton, it will be Your Rock. It's a fantastic help with Uber Izaru and other bosses until you make your staff.

    In Consideration

I still don't have Flesh Offering squeezed into my build, but I'm thinking about it. It would require replacing one of my rings with a second Unset, which will cost another Exalt to craft "+1 Minimum Endurance Charge" again.

Any thoughts you have would be appreciated, I'll go over the whole thing again before I write it up on a better site. Thanks for reading, and enjoy if you try it out!

    Help with a spectre build.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2019 04:43 PM PST

Hey Guys, i'm making a spectre (part skellies) build which i plan to use next league. I'd prefer to go CI, as even the most decked out summoner builds don't go above 5.5-6.5k hp which i think is a little on the low side specially if im to use Vis Mortis untill i get a proper delve chest. Could you check my build tree and see if i have optimized it properly or i should drop something because im missing something glaring. Points of note: 1. i plan to use Vis Mortis at first atleast, i also plan on using a bonehelmet (later on elder version) for my summon skellies so i will won't be able to priotize getting ES on helmet, will be using a Stygian most likely so no crystal belt. Am i gonna tanky enough to reach decent ES levels with this build or am i better off going life?

    1. i am unsure in terms of the Ascendencies, since i'll be running solar guards and a 4-link, maybe pseudo 5-link summon skeletons. If puppet master is worth it (as it seems quite useless on bosses) is worth it or i should go bone sculpter instead.

Any tips, pointers or edits to my skilltree much appreciated. http://www.pathofexile.com/fullscreen-passive-skill-tree/3.5.3/AAAABAMDAQFvBkkLYQxfDXwQlxEtEVAVJxcvGFYYXRhqGyUcpxzcHRQfGCL0JbIo-iqYLJwsvyziMtE1uTlSOsY8LTzvRARFR0ZxSp9LrkyzTblR-1IpU6VV1lXgV8lYB1haWpFboFxrYPhihmL0ZOdmVGaeZrpncWh0aPJqrGvbbAttGXGycg98Dn0Yf8aApILHg1-ESIVgiECLeox2jLGPGo9GkDOTJ5Rvm6GevaDmoS-mrKcIpyunVah9qqmqxK3xr2ywd7QMtzG4k76Kv5fAZsHFw23Grsk9ytPMvM0W0B_Tj9P72QvZW9le2mLfiuL36QLquuvu7Bjsg-yK7-vyHvfB99f56PrS_oE=

Why does enabling Witchfire Brew (37% Increased Damage Over Time) REDUCE my Toxic Rain DoT DPS?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2019 01:02 PM PST

Pastebin link, if needed. It drops by about 700. Why wouldn't this specifically increase Toxic Rain's DPS by increasing the pod's DoT?
