Can we bring some attention to PoE's problems with colorblind friendliness?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 01:03 AM PST

So, 10ish% of men are colorblind in some way (I say men because it tends to be an issue on the X chromosome, which men only have 12345 of), approximately 5% of the population is, so, this does matter. I have personally had friends quit the game over it.

The real issue is with gems and sockets: they don't indicate what color they are without using color. If you take a look at bejeweled or other match 3 games, you'll notice that every item that has a unique color also has a unique shape: this is what allows people with colorblindness to identify them. This also benefits people with typical vision to a lesser degree.

So how can this be resolved in game? Two things:

Redesign sockets to have a shape corresponding to their color: red is a square, blue is a triangle, green is a diamond, white is a circle etc. I'm sure some people will be aesthetically opposed to this, bear in mind this could be an option.

Show what color/shape the gem is on the gem's tooltip and/or update gem art to match the shapes mentioned above: this will also help me ascertain what color the cold to fire gem actually is. Updating the gem art might seem like a big task or disrupt the "supports are round and actives are shaped like a crystal" dynamic, so a minimum viable solution is just telling you the gem color/shape, even if it's only on the advanced tooltip.

Hopefully this gets in front of the right people. Thanks for reading.

    Edit:

There are some tools and workarounds to help with this in the comments. Definitely worth reading through if you're visually impaired! While they can be a helpful bandaid fix, ultimately 3rd party fixes shouldn't be required, and some don't solve the issue in contexts out of game, such as forums/trade sites/screenshots of items.

Some have mentioned GGG have said they're working on a solution. GGG, if you're reading this, can we get an update? Are there additional challenges or considerations that are delaying implementation?

The Path of Exile Services Trading Discord

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:57 PM PST

    Hey all,

Some of the POE Discord mod team have chosen to make a new Discord server to handle some of the flaws global/trade 820 has, and bring service trading (trading that cannot happen entirely through a trade window) to a modern chat system.

Some examples of this would be sharing/trading carries, challenge completion, rotas, breachstones, bulk trades not on the official website, hideouts and full character swaps/sales. You may have seen this mentioned this in comments, the sidebar or from recommendations, but this is the first time we're actually announcing it.

Invite link here: https://discord.gg/p2kFhfY - currently 6000 users.

Why a Discord server? What does this have that /global 820 and /trade 820 don't?
    1. No channel limits. We currently have 4500 users after only a month, and you won't be kicked out due to 'the channel being full'. The server didn't even exist during week 1 of the league, so the user potential is easily 10x current.
    2. Sensible spam limits. No more than one post every 120 seconds. We can/will change this up or down as desired by the community.
    3. Channels for specific categories, instead of the most popular thing taking over. We have channels for sharing/trading breachstones, rotas, challenge completion, crafting, bulk deals, etc. (NOT normal currency for item trades you can do on poe.trade) All channels are per-league. And if demand for a specific type of trade balloons, we can easily make a new channel for it, without splitting the community.
    4. The ability to Ctrl+f the entire history of the server for pricing info, who is selling what, and what people have to say about services they've used.
    5. Notification system. Discord allows you to mute channels (and thus specific trades/shares), and receive push notifications for every message in channels you care about. We'd ultimately like something that will ping you when words are mentioned, but for now, it's still massively more customizable than global chat channels. You can even turn on the Discord Chat overlay to see and reply to messages without alt-tabbing!
    6. Enforcement of community-designed rules. For example, people wanted trades as well as sharing, so we have that. Moving people to other channels for price checks, discussion, and anything that isn't trading? We do that! We can also implement and enforce new rules the community wants via poll. Note: We are not policing scams in general. If someone is serially scamming, then yeah, we'll do something, but that's about it. If anyone wants to make us an open-source vouch-bot, we'd be down to host it and maintain, but it's out of our scope to build one at the moment.

Lastly, we have a dedicated #toucans channel. Enough said.

Please let us know of any suggestions either here or in the dedicated #server-suggestions channel. We're open and listening. We're going to post this thread again closer to 3.6, to expose it to new players and people who don't read reddit mid league. We don't think we've come close to getting even 20% of interested users on the server.

A page from the diary of Jun Ortoi

Second Lunaro of Phreci, 1634 IC

    Location: Outside Syndicate fort, Atoll

I met a man of God today, and has left me thoroughly confused. He was an exiled Templar who literally BURNED with righteous fire so bright that his foes were set alight merely by straying too close to him. Such conviction is rare to see these days though others of the Order used to speak of Juggernauts and others who seemed untouched by the flames. Rumors say that many now know the secrets of this skill but I have seen that to be wrong. They are just using a corrupt version left behind by the long lost Vaal civilization, sacrificing some of their very life for a temporary boost to their spells.

Once I may have thought such an action to be foolish but to avenge my akhara I would do that and more...Damn Perandus and his treachery.

I was hoping to find him in this fort but after several days of watching it is clear that another man rules here, Korell Goya the Son of Stone. He is a truly fearsome foe. A Redblade who seems to have split from the warband and is said to be unharmed by flames, possibly due to his unique spiky red armour. He never leaves his fortifications leaving me resigned to simply assassinate him. Better to remove him for a while if I could not interrogate him, What else could I do. The plan was to wait until dark to slip through the palisade and into the fort and find this misplaced Redblade and see if he was immune to cold steel too.

As darkness approached a commotion broke out in the distance. My first thoughts were that someone was wheeling a cart with a bonfire on it this direction, maybe some sort of Redblade parade or ritual? As the light approached it became clear that the noises were not revelry but the screams of the dying and most shockingly that the fire was not being pushed on a cart but that it surrounded a man who seemed totally unaffected by it. I cursed my inaction of the last few days, this must be reinforcements for Korell! had they spotted me and were planning their own ambush? But no it would make no sense to approach so brazenly like this. I glanced back at the fort and could see the people standing on the battlements seemed as confused as I was. Maybe I should just wait and see how this played out. Someone else could be planning on confronting the syndicate or just rampaging through the atoll but would distract the soldiers in the fort long enough for me to abduct Korell.

As the burning man approached I crouched as low as I could in the bushes, hoping to remain unseen but charged past me holding his shield out in front of him and totally missing that i was there. I breathed a sigh of relief, he did not seem to be after me and in fact was headed right for the front gates of the fort. The gunners were hurriedly preparing their cannons to fire on this abomination of a man. What followed is both true and the most bizarre experience of my life. The man charged straight into the wooden gate of the fort, smashing it open with a single blow of his shield alone causing a shower of splinters that ignited in the air like fireworks! The cannon crews rushed to turn their guns to be able to aim inside the fort as Korell and the stranger engaged in battle.

I leapt from the bushes moved closer as it was clear no one would be watching the outside of the fort now. not with an actual firefight raging in its courtyard. Korell was launching flaming mortars at the stranger who seemed to just stand right in their path, was he not even going to try and dodge the explosions? Insanity. The smoke from the explosions was thick and I feared the worst, was this just some sort of elaborate suicide that would ruin all my plans or some adventurer that was totally out of their depth? My thoughts were interrupted when out of the smoke erupted a shockingly bright ray of flames that scorched all it touched, immolating much of the interior of the fort as is searched out korell. Would his mysterious red armour protect him from these mighty flames? No....it appeared not. After only a moment of this show of force korell dove behind a small pile of stones and cried for mercy, This was all it took for the other soldiers in the fort to drop their arms and flee, this was my chance! If I could convince this pyromaniac to let me take Korell I might learn where that traitor Perandus is hiding.

I called out to him asking him to stay his hand, that I bared him no ill will but alarmingly the ray of fire swung in my direction. Did he not hear me? Was he lost in the madness that comes with combat sometimes? Thankfully the flames cut off before they actually reached me but it was near thing. Even a dozen feet away the heat from those flames nearly scorched me. I introduced myself and explained what I was doing and a little about the syndicate, thankfully he was receptive my plans and agreed to let me take Korell back to my base so I could extract what information I could. Success!

With Korell safely bound and the soldiers gone from the fort we talked for a time and he told me of his past, of being betrayed by his order and exiled to these harsh lands. I was never fond of the Templar Order but how could I not feel for this man who, like myself, has had everything taken away from him? His conviction in God carries him through the hard times the same way my duty and desire for revenge does for me. We stripped Korell of his iconic armour and I offered it to the Templar for his help today. I am not sure it would even fit him, the Templar was actually quite strange looking once you got close to him, a very long neck and shoulders that didn't seem to fit his body correctly at all...but it is wrong of my to judge people on their looks so I should say no more.

It seems that Korell did not know how to fully utilize the armour, it was obvious to me that some of its power was still veiled and I wonder if that would have made for a different outcome of the fight, perhaps the templar really does have his God's blessing. I was able to see through the veil on the item and could shape the power in one of 3 ways. I could make it more resistant to fire and chaos, I could shift those powers to focus on improving the wearer's strength, or I could even allow for some of a attack's physical damage to be mitigated causing the armour to heat up as a result which was a powerful but possibly dangerous option, what if it got so hot from the hits that it started burning you instead?

As explained these options to him his eyes seemed to glaze over and unfocus, was he not paying attention? looking somewhere else? Then almost at random he asked for the strength option, this seemed the least powerful to me, but he did assist me today so I did as asked. He took the armour from me then started sprinting around stuffing his pockets and bag full of everything he could pick up in the fort, I suppose looting is a common enough practice, if distasteful, but why would he leave rare weapons and armour he could actually use on the ground and instead pick up common whetstones and the robes of a mage? Maybe he ran a shop sometimes or knew someone who wanted some cloth.

He turned to leave without even a word of parting to me which was quite rude. I considered just letting him go but I wanted to at least know the name of this strange deformed man who could burn with devotion to his God one minute and sprint around looting seemingly random items from the fallen the next. He looked over his shoulder at me and with a smirk said "XxButtChugger69xX" Then he raised his shield out in front of him once more and charged off. What does that even mean? Was it some sort of joke? could it actually be his name? Maybe he took when he was exiled? Or maybe his father just hated him.

It's been a hell of a strange day and I need a nice strong drink, I wonder if I could convince Zana to join me...

Can we finally have permanent skin transfer?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:50 AM PST

Each league I always do a ranged bow character and I adore bow skills but skins for bows are just not to my liking and I often find myself skin transfering hydras bow every time, can we finally have a permanent skin transfer that will transition every league?

What have you learned this League? What would you do differently?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 09:49 AM PST

    I learned:

    • The importance of a good league starter build... by not having one! I picked one that wasn't really suited to run on a budget and clearly wasn't a good choice.
    • To Delve! I didn't play Delve league, and boy I was missing! So much fun!
    • That no matter for how long you play, if you don't know what you are doing you won't get rich. I played quite a bit this league and barely made a few Exalted Orbs.
    • That if you want to experiment with different builds, better do it on Standard or after the first few weeks of the league... otherwise it will be expensive!
    • To craft... at least the basic concepts. I made my first multi-mod item and it was a huge accomplishment!
    • Also, that crafting is expensive! Better buy the items you need!

    Next league I should:

    • Pick a proper starting build, something that can carry me at very least to red maps on a budget.
    • Stop trying 20 different builds during the first week of the league.
    • Realize that I don't have 12hrs a day to play, and set my goals accordingly.
    • Learn a bit more about mechanics and how to not-to-die every three maps.

    How about you?

    Sap counts as shocked!

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 05:14 AM PST

Am making another weird tank and wanted to turn dps into defense. Using Thundersight now to try and Sap enemies to reduce the damage they do. I discovered that Herald of Thunder acts as if killing a sapped enemy is equivalent to killing a shocked enemy.

I encourage more people to investigate and see what other shock modifiers apply to Sap! This opens up a whole lot of interesting builds if more exceptions apply.

Would also be good to hear from a dev on whether this behavior is intended or if sapped itself is applying the debuff correctly.
