One Life to Live: 10K Delve

    Posted: 14 May 2019 09:03 AM PDT

Once again, now in Flashback, one has to delve hours before monster level = map levels. This can't be right.

    Posted: 14 May 2019 10:57 AM PDT

The progression on those early delves must be really faster. I can't think of a good reason that it's this way...

How to get rich on Path of Exile. Traders HATE him!

    Posted: 14 May 2019 10:33 AM PDT

I feel like everyone else is playing a different game.

    Posted: 14 May 2019 09:37 AM PDT

I've got almost 900 hours in this game, and ever since I started, I feel like everyone else is on a separate track than I am. Whenever I join a group, everyone else in the group is moving through the map at the speed of light, while I'm plodding along--unable to even come close to the speed and damage that everyone else is doing. Nothing in T15 maps seems to touch anyone else, but I am spending dozens of chaos orbs on each individual item to bump my dps up by 0.5%.

I've tried all sorts of builds--tanky ones, glass cannon ones, traps, totems, but whenever I see anyone else play, they seem to have six or more auras going, charging through mobs that would take me minutes to whittle away while dancing around them.

Anyway, I feel like 900 hours is more than enough time to satisfy the 95% confidence interval to get gud. I must be missing out on something fundamental. It has to be either that, or the fact that I just don't play steadily enough to be able to afford items in the exalt echelon of gear. Would someone be willing to take a gander at some of my character builds (my username in poe is the same one as reddit) to see if anything jumps out? I'd be happy to give you the single exalted orb that has dropped for me in this league if you can offer some constructive help. At this point, the beginner guides have stopped offering anything useful to me.

    Thanks!

Winter Orb Mechanics (Hit Rate & Cast Speed Scaling)

    Posted: 13 May 2019 05:38 PM PDT

    Foreword

The rest of this post, below, was written a few weeks ago. After completing the testing and writing this post, I discovered that the hit chance of the skill is substantially higher on targets at range than ones in melee range. This reduces the usefulness of the some of the conclusions in this post. I intended to post this later once I had the time and motivation to redo the lengthy testing, however I've decided I'm not motivated to do it any time soon and that it would be better to post the info as is. I've outlined my testing methods and the testing can be replicated for ranged targets by anyone who has the patience to do so.

    Intro

I recently respecced my Trickster to Winter Orb and was surprised to find out that the damage was significantly worse than expected. My first thought was maybe I didn't have enough AoE to maximize the number of projectiles that hit a single target, so I set out to test how much AoE really matters. During that process, I discovered an even more important issue: the "hit rate" calculation in Path of Building is definitely not correct.

    Summary

    Pretty Graphs and Tables

Increases to cast speed do not multiply the projectile frequency. Instead, they are added to the increased projectile frequency granted by each stage. This means that while cast speed does increase the DPS of the skill, it does not increase it very efficiently. In addition, only stages after the first one grant increased projectile frequency. Functionally, the skill's DPS scales with cast speed as if the gem itself granted 135% increased cast speed.

(in melee range) When supported with GMP, modifiers to area of effect also increase the single target DPS of the skill. At 0% AoE the skill hits ~56% of the time, scaling up to as high as ~73% at ~130% increased AoE. Increases to AoE grant a fairly decent and steady DPS increase all the way up to any value you could reasonably obtain. On average, a 10% AoE node will grant ~2.54% more DPS. Concentrated Effect should grant about 45% more DPS at 20% AoE, down to 30% more DPS at 170%. There seems to be some mild breakpointing effects (since radii are typically truncated) so these values could vary depending on the specific amount of AoE you have.

When dealing damage from a distance, the hit rate is substantially higher. As low as 75.5% at 0% AoE, and possibly up to 100% with reasonable amounts of AoE investment.

    Methodology

I used a character setup something like this: https://pastebin.com/sWs35J7K

Brutality is used to make sure I can't kill anything. Cybil's Paw's life gain on hit is used to count the number of hits produced. I used a single zombie in the coast who never moved during testing as he was always meleeing me. I made sure to test in an open area so as to make sure the projectile targeting was not at all influenced by terrain. I recorded footage in 60 FPS using OBS and made sure to only collect data that was produced while I was at 10 stacks.

For the projectile frequency tests: I removed GMP; Winter Orb with 1 projectile has a 100% hit rate*. This allows me to easily count the number of volleys. Then I channeled at 10 stages for a few hundred volleys. I picked two points in the footage, the first being the frame that I gained ES from the 2nd hit after I hit 10 stages, and the second being the frame that I gained ES from the final hit before I declined to 9 stages. Then I took the difference in life, and divided by 5 to get the number of volleys. Then I divide the duration between those two frames by the number of volleys to get the frequency.

For the hit rate tests I did essentially the same thing, but with GMP, and I used the duration between the two frames to calculate the number of volleys. Then I used the life gained to figure out the number of hits, and divide that by they number of volleys to figure out the number of hits per volley. Rinse and repeat with a zillion different amounts of AoE.

    Other Notes

Winter Orb with multiple projectiles shoots the projectiles roughly in a line, not a cluster. More projectiles makes the line longer, so adding more projectiles doesn't necessarily increase DPS. This is easy to notice in game if you're actually looking for it, but not something I realized even though I've played the skill for many hours. I'd guess that Dying Sun doesn't really increase your DPS by much, if at all, depending on how much AoE you have.

I'm not sure whether the hit rate is different on a monster in melee range compared to one further away. Couldn't figure out a good way to keep a target immobilized while being able to maintain 10 stacks the entire time so I'm too lazy to test it. (use a ranged cannibal instead of a zombie) Visually, it looks like when the monster is in melee range it gets hit mostly with the nearest projectiles and the furthest projectiles can't really ever hit it unless your AoE is massive. When at range the monster is in the center of the line so it could be the case that the hit rate is higher there because it would seem that the distance from the monster to the 1st or 5th projectile is smaller than it is in the melee range scenario.
    Here is a visual comparsion
Editor's Note: In a test of 80 volleys with 0% AoE, I experienced a hit rate of 75.50%. It seems possible, or even likely, that a 100% ranged hit rate could be achieved at reasonable amounts of AoE investment.

There seems to be a uncommon bug with the projectile targeting where occasionally the skill will shoot a projectile in the wrong direction for seemingly no reason. There's some sort of desync involved because usually the projectile doesn't appear on the client at all, its just an explosion that appears out of nowhere. This can occur with both 1 projectile and 5 projectiles, and when it occurs with 5 only 1 of the projectiles mistargets. With 1 projectile, this projectile actually can miss the target (no life gained) so it seems like the misplaced explosion that shows up on the client is actually displaying where the explosion is actually happening. Here's some examples:
    Hidden projectile, missed target
    Visible projectile, hit target
I don't think this has any practical implication on anything. Maybe it could kill you if you're trying to do Atziri split phase with Winter Orb.

Chaos skills + Area Damage question.

    Posted: 14 May 2019 08:26 AM PDT

TL;DR - Does anybody know for certain - do either bane or contagion benefit from area damage?

I am playing ED/Contagion with some Bane mixed in for the first time. It is pretty fun playstyle that I can see myself playing more of in the future so I wanna lock some things down.

I have invested a lot into AoE on my tree (and consequently area damage) because it feels really good to blast an entire screen but I have read mixed messages about whether or not these skills benefit from area damage due to the nature of DoT mechanic implementation in the game.

I have searched the forums and I have read that Bane does benefit from area damage, and also that it does not. I have also read that contagion benefits from area damage, and also that it does not.

There is a section about DoT in a dev. manifesto here: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1894471

... But I am dumb and the wording is confusing.

    Thanks!

What Synthesis items are worth picking up?

    Posted: 14 May 2019 12:23 PM PDT

I didn't play the original Synthesis league, but I am playing the flashback event now.

I am fairly novice at the game, only played the last few leagues and usually only get to the upper 80s in level and just enter red maps before calling it quits.

Is it even worth it for someone like me to pick up and try to synthesize any items? Or is it just a waste of time since I am not at the highest level picking up like ilvl 84 items yet? Nor am I crafting much of anything (completely ignorant of high end crafting).

Are there any particular items that are more worth picking up than others?

    Thanks
