Hi, I have 9 times 40/40 since 2.0. Here are my thoughts on Awakener, directed towards GGG.

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 01:32 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm dobrowolsk, Exilecon attendee, PoE fan, 33 years of age, live in Germany.

I just did my first Awakener fight, failed ofc, at Awakening level 0. The video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaLdGq0yrKM

Here are my thoughts, directed at GGG. I'll try to be as factual as possible:

    1. The fight is the most boring thing in PoE. Uber Elder, Elder, Shaper, Atziri, Aul, Kurgal, ... all of them got my blood pumping and gave me a high heart rate. Sirius doesn't. Why? Because there is nothing to do. You run around, slowly moving the storms around. Then you get about 20 sec of DPS time, before he becomes invulnerable for another minute. This is so so boring. My heart rate was at idle during most of the fight. I wanted to fight a boss, but wasn't allowed to.

    2. The storm thing isn't too hard, I guess. I think I can learn it. But again, it's not fun. It was fun to learn the rythm in the Uber Elder fight. It was fun and exciting to dodge the ice projectiles in Aul, it's fun to dodge Kurgal's degen beam. But it's not fun to sloooowly move storms around and get smacked from an invulnerable flying boss.

    3. Most other bosses keep you from doing damage by throwing shit at you, which is fine. I must dodge and thus can't attack. Just plain invulnerability phases are imho lazy design. You even talked about this at Exilecon and you said you want to avoid them. What happened?

    4. While we're comparing to other bosses.... Hard mechanics are fine if I have the chance to learn them. I can retry Uber Elder, Atziri, Aul, Farrul, Vinktar boss, Chayula, Shaper as much as I can afford. Why do I only get one try of Awakener every 40+ maps? I would never have been able to do the Aul challenges if I had this few tries.

    5. Stop the camera panning thing. It's stupid. Why make me see less in some areas?

    6. Many established defense mechanics in PoE don't mean anything in this fight. The only useful stats seem to be resists, EHP, movement speed and ability to recover EHP. I don't even know which build might be better or which mechanic might help. My only idea right now is massive EHP and regen. Probably ES? Isn't it the point of an RPG to solve problems with gear? I don't think gear will help. I see the requirement to have both gear checks and skill checks in a boss fight. I don't think it's working out here.

    7. For every 40/40 I did, the "don't get hit by ..." and "do ... while ..." challenges were hard, but I always thought they were possible and I successfully did them. In the Sirius fight... haha, fat chance. I find this extremely demotivating, as 40/40 is the primary thing to keep me going in PoE. 39/40 ain't enough and a bought skill challenge doesn't feel right.

I'm pretty sure there are better players out there who can do what I couldn't. It isn't about if it's possible to do it at all or if I need to "git gud", it's about three things:

    • How many players will be able to do it? How many people are pissed of?
    • Does this fight make PoE better or worse? I argue much worse.
    • Is it fun, motivating, intriguing?

I'll close with two measures that shouldn't be hard to implement, but may improve the fight drastically:

    • Reduce size of storms by 20-30%
    • 60% less invulnerability phase duration, 100% more boss life

    Bonus: statistics of my fight:

    • Took 12:23 minutes
    • First time the boss was vulnerable: 2:30 (after one death though)
    • Total time DPSing the boss: 18 sec (-> 75%) + 25 sec (-> 60%, died) + 4 sec (-> 50%) = 47 seconds,
    • Last timestamp at which boss was vulnerable: 9:05.
    • I directly interacted with the boss 6,3% of the whole time. The remaining 93% were spent running around.
    • Deaths to Sirius while vulnerable: 1 (most stupid death)
    • Deaths to Sirius while invulnerable: 2
    • Deaths to storms: 3
    • Deaths I think I could have avoided: 2

Killed the Awakener deathless. The fight is easier than you think. You can do it. A few guidelines for an easier fight inside.

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 07:39 AM PST

Hey guys, this morning I decided to give a go against the Awakener, and surprisingly it went way better than I excepted, to the point I beat him deathless.

For reference, I play frostbolt / ice nova, have 4600 HP, 1600 ES and 4000 mana with a 50% MoM, which added all together amounts to a 8500 non-mitigated damage tankable (I don't mitigate though I have phase acro and 33/23 attack/spell block). My life never went under 50% for 2 reasons : his attacks are way easier to dodge than you think and you can sustain with flasks / leech in contrary to popular belief.

Before we talk about the fight itself, here are a few things you can prepare to make it easier :

    • A leveled decoy totem (used a level 19 0% quality)
    • At least 2 life flasks with the "bubbling" prefix, you can even bring 5 if you want to be safer
    • Unlock Queen of the Great Tangle pantheon soul (and select Arakaali / Shakari before the fight)

Now, for the fight itself, there is 4 phases. Phase 1-2-3 are exactly the same and are really to manage with a decoy totem. Basically all he does is looking at a direction, telegraph an attack with his arms, fire a beam in said direction. Some people think the pace is too fast to be able to damage when he chains beam. That's utterly wrong because I have one of the slowest builds in term of using frames to attacks. I need to cast frostbolt, wait for the balls to be near enough and then spam Ice Nova. My spells aren't instant as would be most spells / a bow / melee. Now the thing is you can simply use a decoy totem, and he will always fire his beams to the totem. Yup you read that right, as long as there is a totem he'll fire into it. A lvl 19 totem will manage to survive to a minor beam, and will absorb all damage of the bigger one. His other attack makes a maze appear and teleports you in the middle of the maze, if you're too slow to get out he'll cast a meteor most likely wiping you. Even with 0% increased movement speed you have enough time to get out by just running. There's also a corridor attack where the only thing to do is using your movement skill to get behind him and you have plenty of time to do so.

Now let's talk about big bad storms which are a common source of problems. As highlighted in this video you don't need to manage the storms at all. All you need to do is to kite a bit Sirius when he spawns a storm and he will automatically push it away for you. You can see it at 2:06, 4:10 and finally at 6:18.

During his last phase he'll use two new attacks, one with 4 Sirius that will aim in the middle of all 4 spawning a rotating beam. Just get behind the real one (the one with a life bar) and you're free to DPS. The last one is hugely telegraphed, where he spawns a lot of clones in circle and only one of them will fire a huge beam. Run in a circle and you're guaranteed to dodge it. Keep using decoy totems for the smaller beams and you're free to DPS him.

Most of these tips above have already been showed through different videos at various places but I thought grouping all of these together would make it easier for anyone wanting to attempt it. The video linked above is a really nice show of the fight and will show you the ropes.

GGG and Reddit please say hi to an entire group of funny scammers

So I wanted to buy my spot into a few Tul breachstone runs. This is what happens:

    https://imgur.com/a/2cWdtoH

In the end he kept taunting me for like 20 more minutes while i stayed to enjoy the view of his hideout.

It was only a 40c scam so it's not the end of the world, but the freedom of scams in this game is getting absolutely ridiculous, and the problem must be addressed.

EDIT: the group even mass downvoted this post right as I posted it. Determination at its finest

    EDIT 2: made an imgur album instead of 9 separate screenshots for clarity, as someone in the comments suggested. Sorry for the crap formatting, was tired when I posted ;-;

Also I forgot to mention, there was at least 1 more guy that got scammed in our party of 4. He said he gave him 25c, to which he laughed off and left. Memes

[Unpopular Opinion] No, I don't want to see the game get harder. Not until some core issues are addressed.

    Posted: 20 Dec 2019 02:53 PM PST

Im probably gonna get downvoted to hell and back, but anyway here goes.

No, I dont want to see PoE get harder, not right now.

Why? Because the "difficulty" that is currently being pushed is more one shot bullshit, invulnerability phases, and generally frustrating mechanics.

I am so fucking tired of ONE SHOTS. Or instant bursts via multiple hits, you get the point.

This sort of difficulty does not FEEL good, its just a frustration. Getting one shot to some random projectile you can even see due to the constant clusterfuck of things going on is not fun. GGG forcing in invulnerability phases in their bosses to force bosses to take longer instead of properly redesigning things is not fun.

Some of the recent major offenders:

-the new ambush packs from conqueror influences, especially the chaos adds. Adds teleporting in, and shotgunning chaos projectiles for an instant one shot is absolutely frustrating. At least in incursion the adds were already spawned and we could peek over at them. These adds give barely any time to react. Also those snake adds, at least let us kill them please.

Sirius. This discussion has already been done to death.

Metamorphs, somewhat. Overall, i like these bosses, but there are a few glaring issues. The visibility of the attacks, and also random one shots as usual. T16 they do kind of feel like they have way too much hp, but im kinda feeling T16 bosses in general have too much hp.

T16 maps, bosses have too much hp here. Once you hit this tier, it feels like you are being shoehorned into T1 hyper dps builds because if your build isnt OP bosses are going to take forever.

There are some excellent examples of difficulty done right. Elder, shaper, elder, atziri, uber elder. These are all GREAT: you know what is going on and have ways to mitigate this. This is PoE difficulty done RIGHT.

I would love to see more PoE difficulty done right, but the difficulty ggg is implementing now isnt the way to go. We need to fix the core issues PoE has right now. Namely, visibility and one-shots.

So until those core issues are fixed, no I don't want to see PoE get harder. I would rather have things be a cakewalk than have more frustrating BS. I want PoE to be difficult, but difficult in the right way.

    End Rant.

Now that GGG is sticking to invulnerable phases for bosses, a little suggestion. Don't allow to restore either health or energy shield while they are invulnerable.

In other words, pause both their health and energy shield restorations. This could help a lot. thanks.
