Mod recruitment for r/pathofexile! Come apply here!

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 11:31 AM PST

Hi everyone! It's that time again. Just as before, r/pathofexile's population has exploded! Since the last time we recruited mods the sub has grown over 100K, and unsurprisingly our mod team needs some more hands on deck to keep up. General info follows, but for the curious please feel free to ask about the moderation side of r/pathofexile on the pinned comment below.

    What do Mods do?

Our major goal is to minimise the amount of spam and unpleasant behaviour on the subreddit. As a mod, your biggest task will be going through the moderation queue — a list of all threads and comments that have been reported — determining whether the posts break the subreddit's rules, and taking action accordingly. Most of the time this just means deleting the post or approving it, though sometimes the post will warrant a ban or other action, such as messaging a warning. Ideally you would also be able to spend some time browsing /new and removing rule-breaking posts as they come up, especially around patch releases when the sub is at its busiest.

Otherwise, required mod duties include responding to user questions and concerns via mod mail (and sometimes other channels), and joining the rest of the mod team in our Discord server to discuss anything moderation related.

If you're someone with initiative you can also help with the subreddit settings and tools such as automod/moderation bots, community awards, old reddit css and anything else that you feel may help. But this is not required or expected.

    Who Are We Looking For?

Good mod candidates have most or all of the following core traits:

    • A history of activity You need to be an active r/pathofexile member to have a good understanding of the sub. We don't have any strict requirements for how long you've been here, how much you post, your account karma, etc., but we will be taking a look at your posting history.
    • Availability While we don't expect you to devote a ton of time to actively modding, you do need to be able to check the sub and/or respond to notifications for a reasonable amount of the day, especially during the time slot(s) you state here. The modqueue can have over 100 reports in less than an hour on busy days, so we try to never have someone tackle that stuff alone.
    • Civility Specifically in objectivity and communication skills. You need to be able to make decisions without bias, and clearly communicate those decisions and the reasoning behind them to users (including very angry users) without losing your cool.
    • A thick skin Being a mod means you're going to get insulted on a regular basis. It's absolutely unavoidable, and you have to be able to shrug that off rather than becoming upset or angry.

    Candidate qualities we're looking for:

    • Primary availability in/around 6:00-14:00 UTC on weekdays. If you aren't available during this time please still apply if you're interested, these timeslots aren't a requirement just a current need.
    • Primary availability in/around 8:00-14:00 UTC on weekends.
    • Fluent in Korean. Explaining nuanced rules and policy through broken attempts at English/Korean is not terribly pleasant for either side. Someone who could break that trend would awesome! Again, this is not a requirement, we're looking for several new mods!

You don't need previous moderation experience, but if you have any (on reddit or elsewhere) please do mention it!

    How to Apply

Just reply to this post! Include the hours (UTC if possible!) that you're usually available and a quick summary of why you'd make a good mod. Please don't nominate other users (though feel free to encourage them to apply themselves).

If you have any questions about being a mod on r/pathofexile that we didn't cover here please reply to the pinned comment below or PM/modmail. Other top level comments that aren't an application will be removed.

    Thank you!

    Issues concerning the new Atlas

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 10:04 AM PST

Before I begin, I'd like to clarify that this post is not advocating for us being able to farm one single map infinitely like we could before (even though it's possible with the new Atlas if you know how to), but to simply shed light on the issues the current Atlas and its mechanics have.

I will not be trying to provide solutions on this thread as it will be lengthy even without them, and GGG has said in the past that players are good at finding problems, not necessarily finding solutions to them.

Some of the issues I'm about to list and explain in this thread are minor and/or to some degree just quality of life improvements, however few of them are major that should be looked at and addressed.

    So let's start with the three big ones;

    1) Permanency of your actions on the Atlas

When you complete a map, it is completed in your Atlas and it will stay completed until the end of times. /u/Zizaran forwarded my questions regarding this topic during his interview with Rory and Rhys before the league started regarding cartographer's seals and the answer was pretty much that the goal is that there is no need to uncomplete maps anymore, referring to the possibility of changing tiers of your maps in the Atlas by shuffling the watchstones.

To address the argument of GGG wanting to "kill target farming", the placements and tiers of certain very popular maps (be it layout, or divination cards) in the Atlas pretty much prove that to be false. A few example maps that can be target farmed even with fully completed Atlas and AL7 (Awakening Level 7); Tower, Arcade, Wharf, Pier, Jungle Valley, Beach, Waterways and Relic Chambers.

GGG has also never said they don't want target farming to be a thing, they have only said that they want fully completed Atlas to be the most optimal way. Current Atlas heavily punishes people for not understanding and planning their Atlas before even completing the first map, however fully completed Atlas is not the most efficient way to do anything. You can sustain T16 maps with less than 100 bonus very easily, which allows one to fully customize their Atlas to only drop one or two T16s they'd like to run.

    A quick throwback to the time when the Atlas was introduced the first time back in 2.4 - The initial Atlas did not have a way for us to uncomplete maps which meant that by pre-planning your Atlas before completing any maps would result in players be able to min-max their Atlas to drop maps they preferred. This would also mean that if one wanted to change the way they are playing the endgame and using the Atlas, they couldn't, as your actions with completing maps was permanent. I pointed out this flaw in this pastebin that stirred discussion and shortly after GGG responded to these concerns;

    Respeccing Decisions

We believe that the correct and dominant strategy will be for players to unlock all maps, but since players are afraid that they'll damage their account permanently if they unlock the wrong maps, we have decided to add a way to respec map completions on the Atlas. Three currency items (one for each colour of maps) will be available from vendor recipes for this purpose. They'll likely be measured in Cartographer's Sextants of the appropriate colours and won't be trivially cheap.

While it's a long time ago, I believe the decision to make people not permanently harm their Atlas for whatever they wanted to do with it is the correct approach and sadly the new Atlas has failed with this.

I expected GGG to not make the mistake twice, especially after hearing their response during the Ziz interview, so I didn't make a big fuss about it. I did however point the possibility of this becoming a massive issue in my thoughts of the new Atlas (if the timestamp doesn't work, go to 33:03), but was hopeful it wouldn't become an issue. Turns out, it is a big issue, because if you wanted to change the maps you run in the Atlas, you have potentially completely bricked your Atlas by completing certain maps that make it harder to obtain and sustain the maps you'd like to run. I migrated my SSF progress to trade league 9 days in to the league after getting rank 11 AL8 Awakener kill, because I knew I could have my Atlas setup in a way that I could enjoy playing the league for much longer than with full completion, and I would also be more efficient with what I wanted to do with it.

For example, I was able to target farm Residences for Dapper Prodigy divination cards early on that you are unable to do if you completed all maps in that region as you'd have too many maps in the same tier with Residence, and my endgame Atlas is planned around 140 completed maps (for Legion zana mod) and to minimize finding T16 maps I don't want. If I didn't care about Legion zana mod, I could permanently run AL7 Crystal Ore and Waterways without ever needing to change watchstones, and I could easily snapshot AL8 by removing 1 watchstone. Currently I'm only missing 5 maps completed from fully finalized setup in SSF, and after that I have 5 T16s that I am happy to run while having permanent AL6 and never finding undesirable maps. Here's how it looks currently and here's my spreadsheet that I used to plan it before restarting. My plans have slightly changed since but it has all the information easily available to figure out what you want to do and what you can do with your Atlas.

    So, due to completing maps being permanent, if you wanted to do something cool and target some specific maps (such as Burial Chambers), you currently have 2 options;

    • If SSF, you can migrate your entire league progression to trade and start from scratch

    • If trade league, you can make a new account to either open maps (for some setups), or to run maps entirely with that new account

People felt forced to do "meta shaped Atlas setups" in the past, how does it feel now that you're still doing an inferior Atlas compared to people who are taking full advantage of the Atlas and it's mechanics, but you are literally unable to replicate that even if you wanted without potentially needing a complete new account?

I think it's safe to say this is a bad thing and something needs to change with this mechanic.

    2) Changing Influence spawn rules

Before you spawn Sirus the first time (20 watchstones), you are able to run every single map in an influenced region with influence without ever not having influence in your maps, granted you are not running the same map twice in a row. After you have spawned Sirus the first time, the influence spawn is no longer guaranteed and instead is always based on chance.

This means that in a race to 100 (at least in SSF) if you didn't know about this and you spawned Sirus, you basically lost due to not having the extra packsize provided by the permanent influence.

In trade league you're able to run AL8 while having every single map influenced due to being able to buy unique watchstones to fill out missing spots in your citadels and be able to generate new influenced items much faster than people who are doing bosses too.

Obviously this has the downside of not being able to obtain Awakened Gems or Conqueror's Exalts, but GGG has removed a lot of player agency because once you spawns Sirus the first time, there's no going back if you at some point wanted to just farm maps with influence instead of bossing. Well, unless you make a new account to do that.

    3) Removal of downgrade mechanics

Before 3.9, if you had no maps of a certain tier available to drop, they would always downgrade to the highest possible map that could drop.

For example (using the new Atlas), if we're running T5 Towers while it being the only T5 map in my entire Atlas and I wouldn't have a single T6 or T7 map able to drop due to maps being either higher (or lower), those T6 and T7 maps would downgrade to T5 Tower.

In 3.9, this mechanic is entirely removed and replaced with "map drop equity" -type mechanic that we don't really know how it even works. The only reason we know about this is because I was concerned of this being bugged and asked Neon and he shed some light with his response. While this new change makes sense if you only ever wanted to run maps that are T14 or higher, we don't know if this even works the other way (how does the equity accumulate from maps that drop as higher tier instead, like in the T5 Tower example? will they help towards T5 Tower drops, or only towards higher tiers than the map when it was supposed to drop, eg toward T8 and above?)

The new system can potentially never benefit (and actually punish) people who don't enjoy running high tier maps. Depending how this "equity" mechanic works, it can actually be harder to sustain a T5 Tower than it is to sustain say, T10 Beach, because you can make T10 Beach be your lowest tier map which could mean that every T1-T9 map that you never saw drop is added as bonus towards your next T10 beach, while with T5 Tower that equity might only apply towards T7/T8 maps and above.

Another reason why it is so confusing and unintuitive to players is that some mechanics (such as Metamorph drop map modifiers) ignore your Atlas entirely and some (such as temple map chests) don't.

Removal of this mechanic has resulted in probably the most amount of "is this bugged" -type thread regarding Atlas this league when people have been wondering why their temples and delve map chests have not dropped a single map. There is a mention of Abyssal cities having bugged map chests here, however there is no mention of temple map chests or other delve cities at all.

    And then some minor issues, though issues that should be looked at;

    4) Snapshotting of Watchstones and Awakening level

A lot of people disliked the micromanagement of sextants and Elder's influence from the old Atlas. Well, depending what you want to do the most efficient way is to actually snapshot Awakening Level and watchstones (because of sextants) every single map. This can mean a lot extra clicking between each map if you're not running T14+ maps with AL8. Players shouldn't be punished by not running maps with AL8 in this way.

    5) Unable to fight low tier Conquerors after the first time

After you have killed a Conqueror with 0, 1, 2 and 3 watchstone difficulty, you're only ever able to fight them at 4 watchstones from there on. This means you cannot test your new builds towards low to mid tier versions of the Conquerors, unlike you were able to do with Elder and his Guardians before.

You can decide the difficulty of your Awakener, why can't you do the same for Conquerors (past just not giving them AL8 for extra life multiplier)?

    6) Unable to see progress towards your next Sirus fight

A lot of players are thinking their Atlas is bugged due to them not being able to spawn influence. What they often forget (or are not aware of at all) is that once you have encountered Sirus for the first time at 20 watchstones, from here on you will always have a cycle of 4 Conquerors -> Sirus fight, with no repeatable Conquerors during that cycle, so they might be trying to spawn new influence while having their last influence of the cycle before the next Sirus fight.

Having a good visual indicator somewhere would help people not have this issue, and sometimes it can be hard to keep track of your cycle because you might log in today and not remember at what stage you were when you last time played. Obviously it is easy to not have this issue by always clearing any remaining influence first, but still.

    7) The difficulty and annoyance of finding out where maps belong without shuffling watchstones around in your Atlas

Currently, the only way to find where a specific map is located (that is revealed first with watchstones) is by shuffling watchstones in different citadels or by using external sources like spreadsheets or websites. This can be very tedious and annoying to do.

    8) Missing quick placement of watchstones

We can already CTRL + click watchstones back to the stash from the citadels. Having the option to quickly place watchstones to the tiny citadels without manually finding the small hitbox for it wouldn't solve the issue with unique watchstones, but it would be something at least.

    8) Horizon Orbs & Harbinger Orbs

While this is already documented as known issue, I'd like to mention it still, that the way Horizon and Harbinger Orbs currently work (they only result in maps that are the base tier, instead of any map of that tier) is not how they are supposed to work based on their old behaviour.

There even was a time in the past (think it was at the start of 3.5, can't pinpoint the exact league, sorry) where they worked similiar to how they work now and they were quickly changed.

For example, currently any T7 map that is not a Precinct will turn to T7 Precinct, because it's the only map that is T7 at its lowest level. As a result, if you try to use Horizon Orb on a T7 Precicnt it won't do anything. This is not how they are supposed to work, and once they fix the way they work people who have been using Horizon Orbs to help sustain running specific maps of a tier (for example T16 Promenade as there only 3 native T16s) are no longer be able to do that and should they want to continue, they would have to either buy the maps (we all love trading, right?) or create specialized Atlas on a new account (or migrate progression in SSF and start over).

    9) Obtaining Vaal Temple

T16 Vaal Temple can currently only be obtained naturally (so not through a divination card) by corrupting T15 maps in Valdo's Rest, so either T15 Lighthouse or T15 Overgrown Ruin, because they are in the same region. They had a similiar bug back in 3.5 where the only way to obtaining Vaal Temple was through corrupting the only native T15 map in it's quadrant, T15 Tower.

Not only is the same bug a thing again where only maps of it's region work, this time around Vaal Temple can also be obtained through 3-to-1 instead of just corruption.

    10) Unable to see completion and missing Awakening Bonus

Zana map modifiers are based on completed maps (not bonus) and most importantly 140 completed for Legion map mod. The only way to really find out how many completed maps you have is to either manually calculate all the maps you have completed or substract the grayed (uncompleted maps) from the maximum, 154 maps.

On top of that, there is no indication on the map stash for maps that have or don't have awakening bonus, and while you can see the light circle around the map in your Atlas, it can be hard to see when you're only missing few of them and it would be nice to be able to see it in your stash.

It is also not shown in the options with Zana's mission.

I'd like to end this thread on a positive note though.

I've been enjoying the new Atlas despite its problems and I really, really enjoy the way we can move and save sextants for later use, and to easily swap between different (preset) setups that GGG has given us even if it means there's less actual player agency that we have. It's hard to tell how much of the enjoyment is due to the honeymoon we are having with the new Atlas and how I or we would feel next league if there are no changes to the current mechanics, but once the major issues are handled and the QoL additions I believe the new Atlas will be much better than old one.

    Piety farming to kill economy?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 06:25 PM PST

I know this may get downvoted. But it feels like piety farming has made a big change to how the game is played. After an hour or so of piety farming with a 6 man group and rare finder I had 5 uniques and 9 stash tabs full of unidentified ilevel 68 rares. People just don't want to run maps. It's hard to make an arguement against it other than wanting to progress in levels past 81+. You can run a map with a few people and maybe get 1-9 rares out of the whole thing. Or do piety with 5 runners and get 20-30 rares+uniques in 10 minutes. Even if you don't get a good rare you get enough alterations to buy jewlers/fusings. It has also made it difficult to sell "decent" items as everyone wants perfect piety loot, which is close to end game map loot. Now that you can get shav's and Koams off piety it's going to make things worse.

I decided to save some money buying Vorici 3W from a safehouse instead of off-coloring my chest armor. I went to trade 820 where I met a fellow named Djamba (account VituArtzz) who said he had 3W for sale for 1ex.

Long story short, I traded him my money and my item, he left party and went offline. You can see the album here: https://imgur.com/a/oq7zEHO

The guy streams and everything too: https://www.twitch.tv/vituarts

He already has the item up for sale and I have low hopes that support will do anything about it. I just want to save other people the trouble of running into people like this in trade 820.

I guess he did 3W the item though xD

    [Overlay] Mappy v1.0 has arrived!

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 09:21 AM PST

    [Overlay] Mappy v1.0 has arrived!

    Hello everyone!

I am happy to announce that Mappy is now in a state I'd call version 1.0. It now functions as I imagined it would a couple of weeks ago. You can get the newest version over at: Github

    What is Mappy

    Mappy Preview

Mappy is a basic autohotkey-script to create an overlay for you to organize your most used search-keywords. Every time you catch yourself typing in a word more than once in your stash or at the vendor, you can add that one to Mappy. It creates a transparent window which you can move around and lock at any position. The overlay contains a button for each keyword you added and sends the keyword to Path of Exile. It removes the need to retype the thing you search for very often by adding it once to the layout and having it saved for future uses!

I will record a video-showcase for this version in the next couple of days. Until then, you can check out a previous version of Mappy here. (The main use is the same, v1.0 simply has more features and is user-friendlier) : Mappy Video

    How to use Mappy

Using the overlay is fairly simple. Starting Mappy for the first time will pop up a window with one line of buttons and a "+" button below. (I will call this process Method 1)

    • Clicking that + button will add a new category. Categories are like folders, they contain all your keywords.
    • Keywords are the words you'd type in your input field in Path of Exile.
    • Having your first category added allows you to add keywords to that category (Via a "+" button again. The one on the right to your category). With your first category & keyword done, Mappy can go to work.
    • Clicking on your keyword will send the text to Path of Exile (Your stash or vendor menu needs to be open).
    • Repeat this process of adding categories & keywords until you have everything set up. You can now use Mappy everyday instead of typing anything in your stash anymore!
    • If you don't need a category or keyword anymore, either hit the "-" button to remove the last item or right-click on a button to remove it

Method 2 (Creating a new overlay via the config-gui. Allows for saving the overlay as a new file)

    • Click on "New Overlay" to open a new window which guides you through the process of adding categories & keywords
    • Choose the amount of categories you want and same it
    • Name your categories and hit "Save Categories"
    • You can now add keywords to your categories (The field contains a drop-down-list with all maps if these are what you'd like to add)
    • Done with your categories & keywords? You can either choose "Save Overlay" to overwrite your current one or choose "Save As New Overlay" to create a new file (filename must end with ".ini")

    Loading Overlays

    • You can also load overlays (either from yourself or other people if they share their .ini.
    • Simply select "Load Overlay" and select the file you'd like to load. Done

    Update 1.0

For everyone who has used Mappy before, I'd like to shortly show what has happened since v0.5. As stated, the main use of Mappy stays the same. But since the last time I posted, Mappy has become a lot more responsive. It now allows you to change the hotkey for showing/hiding the window. It saves the position of your window, so reopening it won't require repositioning the window anymore. You can now dynamically add/remove everything (Via "+" & "-" buttons in your overlay). Saving & loading multiple overlays also made it. A full list of what has happened can found over at github in the "Changelog.txt".

Also, a super big thanks to everyone who has used Mappy before and supported me throughout the development. You gave me motivation to keep working on Mappy. Thank you!

    Conclusion

Mappy won't change the world. It's not as big as other tools. You might not like it, you might find it useless. And that is perfectly fine. Developing Mappy and working together with people's feedback was/is the best project I had to this day. I am so glad for every experience I gained while working on it. And contributing something to the community felt really good. Even if just 3 people use the tool, that's more than I could ask for. I wish everyone of you a wonderful time with Mappy, PoE and life. Also thanks GGG for the game, I wouldn't have had the motivation for this project otherwise.

I will be there for every comment, bug report, kind/mean words or random things. Just know that I love you all and am thankful for everything related to Path of Exile. Cheers!

Does anyone else find making new builds more fun than actually playing?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 11:24 AM PST

Like I'm not even good at making builds, but it's just so damn fun. Even while playing my mind is thinking of new build ideas. And the worst part? I've never even reach Act 3, though I plan to finally finish the story this time.

Selfcast spellcasting feels like it's hit rock bottom.

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 05:11 PM PST

Almost one year ago this was one of the opening lines from the Synthesis balance manifesto

"For a number of leagues, the majority of builds that use spells have used proxies like Totems, Traps or Mines to cast skills for them. There has also been a focus on skills that do their work automatically over a long duration."

I gravitate to selfcast and strike skills every league because that's what I like to play ( I also hate myself ). I get that some things in games are always going to be weak and some things stronger, that's fine.

But a month into Metamorph, the situation with selfcast spells vs. triggered or proxies feels like the worst it's ever been. The selfcast specific gems are underwhelming. Awakened unleash is a wet noodle of a gem with no real teeth. There is no awakened innervate or arcane surge. The anoint for an extra unleash seal is even more awful than having to allocate Tribal Fury as a strike melee player. There's just no effective setup in the game for the playstyle that I can see except maybe pledge of hands / ice nova /fb abuse with a TON of cast speed that feels like it has modern fluidity, durability, and damage of a scuffed meta build.

Getting builds out of the dumpster requires MORE investment than the "expensive" CoC/CwC builds for worse performance and still winds up with a playstyle that's kind of clunky for meat and potatoes mapping.

I don't have a problem with triggers and proxies and like that they exist in the game. I've played summoners/totems/mines and had fun with them! But these approaches should at least have some clear design space vs. casting the spell directly from your character beyond just being better with even the most modest (10-20ex ) investment.

Some ideas for a currency tab overhaul

    Hi everyone !
With all the new currencies added to the game recently (conquerors exalts, oils, catalysts, ...), maybe it's the opportunity to make a huge overhaul of the currency tab (GGG if you listen :D).

I throw here some ideas. Let me know what you think ! Sorry in advance, I'm bad in English ! :/

My main focus was to reorganize the slots so that currencies are logically grouped according to their usefulness, frequency of use, value/rarity.
Since currency shards have no use, I separated them from their respective orbs in order to facilitate the grouping of useful orbs around the item slot.

An example of currency tab layout with all the currencies

In a second version, I decided to hide the shards. They would be visible only by clicking on an arrow next to the associated orb. This would allow to gain a lot of space, and to add slots dedicated to blight oils.

And because "why not?", I make a third version with a separate slot for rolling maps. :D

Anyway, I had a lot of fun making this. Hope you like it!

How I Spent My Mirror in Metamorph

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 12:19 AM PST

Got my first ever mirror in 3600 hours in metamorph and here's what I did :

    Sold mirror for 204ex.

    Playing Caustic Arrow PF.

    Bought headhunter. 100EX.

    Bought 3x Inspired Learnings. 27ex.

Bought Div Cards. 30ex. Got 1 Nurse, 1 The Demon, 1 Doctor, 2x Beauty Through Death. Roughly broke even. 30ex back.

Bought Ice Shot gear, respecced Deadeye, hated it. 10ex.

Respecced Pestilent Strike. 10ex. Single target so good, clear is pretty good when HH is stacked.

    Somehow have around 40ex left.

Buy The Saviour, realise pestilent strike doesnt work with swords, resell it and make 10c profit!

Game is so much more fun with currency its annoying as hell.
