A follow-up to /r/pathofexile's current direction and how we're moving forward

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 05:56 PM PDT

Hello fellow exiles, as promised here is our response to the previous thread on negativity and toxicity in the subreddit. We had nearly 4000 comments in the prior thread so it took a lot longer to read than expected but we made sure to look over every single comment made. We wanted to use this sticky to cover a variety of topics including some clarifications/misunderstandings on the previous thread, what we will be implementing based on your feedback, and some new things we'd like to add to the community.

As with last time, please continue giving us feedback for what you think and how you'd like to improve the community.

    Clarifications & Misunderstandings

While we put a lot of effort into the previous thread, it was obvious we did not do quite enough because there were some ideas presented which were interpreted in unintended ways. With that said, here's a quick rundown which will hopefully better describe them:

    1. Duplicate Threads – This was by far the most discussed topic so let's get this out of the way early. The goal of the duplicate thread rule is to keep the front page from being entirely one topic with many threads saying effectively the same thing. The consequence of having so many threads on the same topic is that it drowns out most any other discussion which is something we'd like to avoid.

We are aiming to take advantage of how Reddit naturally has threads fall off the front page. If/when the community takes issue with a specific topic, we're more than happy to see multiple threads on the topic on the front page, every day, for as long as the community sees fit. As those threads fall off the front page, users are more than welcome to submit additional threads to keep the ball rolling. In fact, we hope that throttling the rate might allow topics to last over a longer period of time without garnering the inevitable topic fatigue which often follows.

There was not, nor was there ever intended to be, an arbitrary time limit on posts about a topic. We are only concerned about the rate of such posts and the resulting FP flooding.

The only time we'd be removing threads in this case would be if we already had several active threads on the front page covering the same topic at the time of the new post's removal. In most cases, we won't need to remove threads at all. This should only ever come up for particularly volatile topics, such as the recent stash tab discussions.

    2. Attacks versus CriticismWe are not removing criticism of GGG, POE, or any other related topics. We cannot stress this enough. Criticism is a good thing, it shows both the community and the developers that we take issue with certain things and would like to see change, and quite frankly the sub wouldn't be where it is today without the ability to give criticism. Please continue throwing criticism on the subreddit. With that said, there is a distinct difference between criticizing the game/new releases and attacking its developers.

This difference is not complicated either. Consider the sentences "Fuck Chris, he should be fired for making such a moronic decision releasing these stash tabs" versus "Fuck these stash tabs, it's deplorable and embarrassing that these were released over improving our current ones." The first sentence is an attack, the second is criticism. Additionally, we are not requiring you solve the problem, that's GGG's job, not yours. These two example sentences are used simply to illustrate the topic and are not templates for how you should or should not post.

    3. Bug Reports – We're not planning on removing bug reports. This was a mistake in how we wrote that topic and was never intended to imply that they'd be removed. In an ideal world, bugs can be listed here for public awareness/avoidance and also posted in the official forums so GGG can get more info (such as your already verified in-game account info) and tackle the problem just that little bit faster. The bot will simply refer users to the official forums in case they were unaware.

    What We're Doing

There was a lot of reasoned criticism of the previous post, which was fair to point out and caused a reassessment of some of the ideas we put forth. Given this, below are the only items we will be adding today.

    1. Duplicate Threads – Please see the above discussion but the TL;DR is that having multiple threads on the front page at any time is still perfectly fine. Once those threads fall off the front page, users are free to submit more threads to ensure that the topic is visible to everyone, every single day, for as long as it takes to get a response. The only time similar threads will be removed will be if there are already several on the front page related. Additionally, users are more than welcome to respond to the removal modmail message and we will direct those users to the currently-active, similar threads.

    2. Expansion of Rule 3 – Our intended implementation of the expansion was likely too heavy-handed so we're looking for a much softer approach. Please see the above discussion on attacks versus criticism, attacks will be removed but criticism and general complaints will not. We heard your responses on the use of gifs / memes to express frustration with the game's direction. We're going to continue allowing these, and the only additional memes that will be removed for rule 3 going forward are ones that directly insult or attack people.

Please note, low effort posts (such as the previous thread's example of "Harvest is bad") will only be removed if it's used as the body of a post rather than just a comment. Submitted threads should be constructive, as a means of fostering discussion, but that doesn't mean every comment needs to be substantive. If you want to chime into a thread to just say "Hey, I also think X sucks", please do so to make your voice heard.

We're hoping that these two changes are all we'll need to help curb some of the issues we've seen over the past year.

    New & Regular Stickied Discussions

Alright so now to the more fun topic: extra things we'd like to do as a community.

Our team has been talking a lot about ways to improve the community and we came to the realization that the subreddit has an unfortunate lack of things for you guys to participate in. What we mean by this is that the subreddit's peak activity is the week before, week of, and week after a new league. It's during this time where you see new uniques, builds, bugs, fanart, races, and really anything else that makes Path of Exile so exciting to us four times a year. The 9-10 weeks between these periods usually stagnates unless we get a sweet event, such as one of Zizaran's private leagues or a racing event.

As a means of easing downtime, we were considering a regular set of rotating posts we'd have AutoModerator sticky at some agreed-upon interval. Some of the topics we've considered include:

    • Build criticism: Self-explanatory, just a giant thread where people can post their POB/profile and more knowledgeable exiles can tear it apart.

    • ALL CAPS, ALL ANGRY: DID YOU BRICK AN ITEM, FALL FOR A SCAM, OR COPY QUIN69'S BUILD BY ACCIDENT? LET'S SEE THOSE RANTS, CAPS LOCK ONLY.

    • Show-off: A consolidated but more open area than the normal item showcase threads. This thread would include literally anything you are proud of including (but not exclusive to) hitting 100, divining a perfect Ventor's, fooling your cat into sleeping on your decoy keyboard to allow you to map properly, or really anything else related to the game.

    • Shameless Self-Promotion: We love our content creators but the subreddit rules aren't always the friendliest to them because we need to draw that line between adding to the community in a genuine way versus using the community as a means to make money. Well, this line more or less disappears in this thread. All you youtubers, streamers, fan artists, and interpretive dancers can plug your stuff and give us a means of checking out your material.

    • Fan-Art Gallery: What's that one piece of PoE fan art that's stuck with you? Post a link to it (please credit the artist!) and let others get either nostalgia or discovery out of that amazing piece.

Many of you are far more creative than our team though so if you like this idea, please give us more topics. If you don't like this idea, give us some different ones. We want to have something here which gets users excited to come back on a semi-regular basis, even if they've already quit the league.

The Baeclast post discussion revealed the disconnect between the normal player and the streamers.

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 03:29 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm watching the baeclast podcast post discussion at the moment and they are discussing about wether or not Harvest should go core and if the game needs stronger, less rng based crafting and I feel like apart from Ziggy and Nugi they are really really disconnected from the majority of the community. I mean I can see that harvest makes it too easy to get top tier items for them specifically, as they play 8 hours every day as part of their job, but they seem to not realize that that amount of play time is not the standard and that most players, even with harvest, will never even get where they are in terms of itemization. I like this season because I am able to make items that are strong in a reasonable time frame. I have a full time job on top of other real life obligations and it took me 3 weeks to set up my garden to the point where I can do all the harvest content and plant tier 4 seeds. The game and the crafting especially is really complex for a casual, so I really like that it got a more straight forward and a less rng based approach to it now that I can access it in a normal person's time frame. I really do not see the downside for the majority of the player base of having a way of this type of crafting (wether it's with a garden or just by being able to turn general annuls and exalts into targeted ones).

What do you guys think. Do you agree with the streamers? Do you think having a less rng, less time consuming crafting system is bad for the game overall?

Edit: Just to clarify, this is not a post to flame anyone. Everyone is entitled to his own opinion and I understand where the streamers are coming from. Just want to know what the general community thinks about it.

The fun of the harvest isn't necessarily that we're getting upgrades, it's how we are getting the upgrades.

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 07:57 AM PDT

Making the items ourselves is so much more fun than having to save up for long periods of time and then purchasing upgrades from other players. Even if I don't have much time to play I can still work on one of my projects and feel productive. Not only that but I feel proud and attached to the items I've created myself. The progression for my character feels more meaningful and feels obtainable. Even with being able to craft strong rares, there are still chase items out there I can't afford or craft (watchers eyes, etc.)

I know the content isn't the most engaging, but I've never had this much fun fleshing out a character and will be playing the entire league for the first time since betrayal.

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 08:07 AM PDT

Why on Earth do I still have to unsocket my gear every single time I want to use ANY harvest craft, while every other crafting bench in the game works just fine with gems in your gear??

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 09:49 AM PDT

We're a month into the league and I just don't understand HOW the devs made harvest crafting benches so annoying to use, when it works just fine anywhere else in the game.

There are literally only 2 crafting options that matter to your gems. Rerolling number of sockets and colour of sockets. Why would you make a harvest crafting bench and actively change how it works compared to all the other benches in the game?

Is there any logic behind it that I don't see?

I know this is just a useless rant, but sometimes I just question how they do their QA and playtesting, I dunno.

    Splinter drops seriously need Buffed

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 08:38 AM PDT

My character is at 2 full days of played time so far. The closest I am to any breach stone is 65/100 Xoph. The closest to a Legion Piece is 42/100 Karui. That's pretty dumb. The rewards from these can be good, but not THAT good. Maps are saturated with many league mechanics to choose from at this point, and the fact that you can get like 2~5 splinters per encounter when encounters only happen once every 10ish maps is just dumb.

Special shout out to Simulacrum Splinters as well. 32/300. I have fully given up on the idea I will ever finish one of those.

GGG, why are you barricading LEVEL 70 encounters behind grinds that take you well into your 90s?

edit: Just wanted to say I got my first Xoph breachstone after dumping a bunch of chaos into my map device to force breaches. Pretty proud of it. And he dropped... Nothing. After all that. Amazing.

Dear GGG, maybe you should make VD MTX free for everyone until the performance issue is addressed?

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 02:06 AM PDT

Seriously, just an idea of having me to pay $$$ to increase FPS to a somewhat acceptable level while playing VD build is just nuts.

Here's an example of my mapping experience so far:

    nice performance, GGG

Not sure how it is on PC, but on Xbox, we have just two performance options: favour performance and favour quality (or whatever, never used it). The clip above is "favour performance" on the latest console as of today, and nevertheless, we have 0.5-5 fps most of the time.

[PoE Party] safe, easy, and straight-forward method for buying/selling in-game services, finding guilds/aurabots/etc, and more...

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 12:57 PM PDT

Hello, Exiles! Today, I'd like to introduce yet another way to buy/sell your in-game services which some of you may appreciate... https://poeparty.com

    INTRO:

Finding reputable in-game service providers, certain players to fit a group-role (aurabots, for instance), and various other in-game objectives that revolve around interacting with other players haven't always been some of the easiest things to do... This league (harvest) has generated a lot of new demand for things like this (harvest crafting services, in particular), which some other dedicated groups of players out there have tried to make a more streamlined solution for (shout out to https://forbiddenharvest.com - great work, guys!). We too have created a solution; though it takes a broader approach - covering a wide range of topics/categories - in attempting to solve the various in-game player interaction struggles we poe players have encountered.

This post will attempt to touch on the key-points for the site.

This video - https://youtu.be/vrZdeyr7apE - will show you everything you'd need to know/do, in order to use the website successfully.

    SUMMARY:

    1. poeparty makes finding players, services, events, and more EASY & FAST to do (instantly find who/what you want, using sort/search/filtering, built into various parts of the website)
    2. poeparty makes player-interaction SAFER (using feedback, post-ratings, user-ratings, post/feedback manipulation prohibition, etc).
    3. poeparty makes participation on the site SIMPLE & SAFE (no dependencies on things like discord, POESESSID, etc. (simply login via pathofexile.com account (GGG's offical OAuth service), using literally 2 clicks))
    4. poeparty makes leaving feedback and vouching FAST & STRAIGHT FORWARD (feedback is as easy as leaving a comment > clicking submit; vouching system is not complicated - just click the number of stars you want to leave a post... done)
    5. poeparty aims to keep players ETHICAL (RMT-related activity is discouraged, and will be removed when/if players are found engaging in rmt-related activities on poeparty)

    CURRENT FEATURES:

    1. the ability to instantly find services/groups/etc. of interest via search/filter options
      1. the post filtering process is pretty straight forward...
        1. filter posts by in-game online status (toggle the "online" switch > click "Search" button)
        2. filter posts by title using keywords (type keyword(s) in the "Search Title" box > click "Search" button (or hit {ENTER}))
        3. filter posts by author using keywords (type keyword(s) in the "Search Author" box > click "Search" button (or hit {ENTER}))
        4. filter posts by league of interest (type keyword(s) in the "Search Title" box > click "Search" button (or hit {ENTER}))
      2. the post sorting process is also straight forward...
        1. sort by columns of choice (last updated, title, author, rating, # comments)
        2. sorting can be used after applying search filters, as well
    2. the ability to gauge an author's credibility/legitimacy via feedback and rating-stats (overal post ratings; # of ratings; etc)
      1. ratings/feedback appear on a per-post basis
      2. ratings/feedback appear on an overall user's rating (visible on their public profile pages)
    3. safe-guards in place to protect against scamming and post manipulation
      1. users can only vouch for a post (star-rating) ONCE. this CAN be edited again later, if so desired. clicking the same amount of stars twice will remove your vote, if you'd like, too.
      2. built-in protection is present, to prevent fake feedback via armies of fake accounts vouching for a post which might otherwise be an attempt at some sort of scam
    4. login using only your poe account - no discord (or other) dependency - via GGG's official OAuth service
      1. assuming you're already logged in on your pathofexile.com account in your browser, logging in is literally a 2 click process
      2. having a discord (or any non-pathofexile.com account, period) is NOT a requirement
      3. we will never ask for your password
      4. we will never ask for your POESESSID
    5. in-game online/offline status of authors
      1. similar to online status for players, using trading websites; it is useful to know online status of an author on poeparty too. this is indicated as a green (online/afk) or grey (offline) dot, beside users' names
      2. you must have at least one thing listed in a public premium-tab, to show as "online" on poeparty.com
    6. the ability to find guilds, support builds, etc. via member searching
      1. pulls info from inputs in the "roles" field, on profile pages
      2. searching occurs on the "member search" tab
      3. useful for finding guilds (or guild members), support builds (aura/curse bots for instance), MFers/cullers, etc.
    7. the ability to share your relevant, off-site poe content (youtube/twitch) site-wide, with ease
      1. https://www.poeparty.com/profile > paste your twitch url
      2. https://www.poeparty.com/profile > paste your youtube url
      3. these will appear beside your name, in the listings, to help players discover you and your helpful poe content
      4. these will appear on your public profile pages (such as user's link, for example https://www.poeparty.com/user/PoE_Party) as well (more info below)
    8. the ability to share your public profile and services with ease using a single link
      1. you can access someone's link (yours OR someone else's) by clicking a users name in the "author" column, of the table of posts
      2. you can access YOUR link using the share button while editing your https://www.poeparty.com/profile page (will copy your url to share, to clipboard), too
      3. your profile page shows all of your listings (services and such, you'd like to sell, for example), their ratings, etc
      4. your profile page shows all of your roles (aurabot, guild-need status, etc)
      5. your profile page shows your overall user rating (your rating across all your posts)
      6. your profile page shows links to your additional content (twitch/youtube channels)
      7. your profile page's link can be shared easily, elsewhere (in-game party title (like thread numbers, for forum links), discord with your friends, or where ever else you want)
      8. here is an example profile page, for instance https://www.poeparty.com/user/PoE_Party
    9. whisper buttons that mimic trading websites
      1. this allows you to contact users fast and easily
      2. this allows you to contact users in a way that almost 100% of players are already familiar with
    10. pre-existing categories (tags) to choose from, when creating posts
    11. event listing tags (example: arbitrary events): primarily used in case users want to create their own "1 hour merveil races" (or whatever else they want) to compete against each other in during the 'dead' period, towards end of leagues (to keep things interesting for each other, during this phase). Pssst!... PVP is also a thing ;)
    12. individual listings tags (example: carry services): primarily used for services or other activities that are not necessarily group-oriented (ie- a single individual is all that is required, for a lab carry listing to be completed, for instance)
    13. group/rota tags: primarily used for LFG purposes
    14. misc tags: primarily used for things not already specified in other tags
    15. "hall of fame" sections
    16. these are meant to reward players who do a great job providing their listings to other players
    17. these are also meant to let viewers quickly snap to the listings that are most likely to accomplish what they're looking for (with no searching/sorting/filtering required)
    18. these quickly acknowledge the best listings on a per-page basis (home page, a tag/category's page (example: WTS Carry services page), etc)

    FUTURE PLANS:

    1. special badges for players based on poeparty reputation, level of involvement, etc.
    2. scam-alert page to help players watch out for specific known scams/scammers
    3. more advanced searching/filtering
    4. live alerts for posts/members of interest
    5. considering a 'smart' rework of current tag system
    6. more... :)
    7. (feel free to suggest some, too!)

    WRAP-UP:

So there you have it! Poeparty.com... We hope it helps all ye' exiles out there, as much as possible! To report any bugs, leave feedback/ideas/etc., or to contact us for any other reason that you'd like to, you may do so by...

    1. email: [support@poeparty.com](mailto:support@poeparty.com) (also used on the "contact us" page)
    2. discord: PoEParty#6246 (email is better though)

All of this said... thanks for hanging in there, this far, if you have.

Till next time, Exiles... Stay scam-free and take it easy!

    EDIT:

    1. Our logs are indicating some (small %) firefox users are experiencing some issues. We're aware of this and are working on it as we speak
      1. fixed
    2. pardon the formatting (indentions/hierarchy of bullet points) on some of the last points mentioned in the current features list... editing the post for the point directly above messed it up some how. i've re-done the formatting several times from scratch now and it will NOT accept the fixes... over it, sorry :)
