Path of Exile Builds Self-chill: a brief guide

    Self-chill: a brief guide

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 03:06 PM PDT

    Introduction

In PoE, anyone talking about "self-chill" is implying "self-reversed chill".

Normally, chill lowers your action speed by the amount of the chill. Action speed multiplies the speed of your attacks, spells, movement speed, and stun/block recovery; basically, anything that has an animation. Your action speed is 100% by default, but you'll find it's sometimes lowered to 0% by being frozen or increased to 150% by an Acceleration Shrine.

A 30% chill on you would normally lower your action speed to 70%, which sucks. But! Throw on the Winterweave ring, and the same chill would instead increase your action speed to 130%. So if you can consistently self-chill, it's like a weaker but permanent Acceleration Shrine.

In a game where speed is profitable (and fun), self-chill can be a large part of a build's power, and other increases to your speed tend to be additive, not multiplicative, and to only one type of action, not all of them.

    Mechanics

    • To be chilled, you must take Cold damage from a non-reflected hit. By default, Cold damage has a 100% chance to chill.
    • Damage from Hits taken as Cold allows other types of damage to chill you. (While Damaging Ailments on you are calculated using damage before conversion, non-Damaging Ailments are calculated using damage after conversion.)
    • Damage taken conversion does not chain. (e.g. No Chaos->Fire->Cold.)
    • By default, the maximum chill effect is 30% and the minimum is 5%. If you don't chill for at least 5%, then you won't chill at all.
    • The amount of the chill from Cold damage is based on the percent of your maximum Life taken (or maximum Energy Shield if using Auxium) and increased by Effect of Chill, Cold Ailments, and non-Damaging Ailments. You can see the formula here.
    • Here are some examples:
Increased chill effect Cold damage taken Final chill
    +0% 0.32% 5%
    +0% 4.93% 15%
    +0% 27.89% 30%
    +100% 0.06% 5%
    +100% 0.32% 10%
    +100% 4.93% 30%

    Sources of chill

    • Taking Cold damage
    • Icefang Orbit (when poisoned) and
    • Venopuncture (while bleeding) (Ring; 10% chill effect, scales with increased chill effect; see also The Golden Rule)
    • The Fulcrum (Staff; reflects elemental ailments)
    • Probably not: Chilling Conflux?
    • Probably not: Other types of damage with can Chill (Soul Taker? See also Doedre's Elixir below.)
    • Probably not: Being frozen while stacking reduced effect or duration of freeze. (You are supposed to be chilled while frozen and shortly after being unfrozen; reduce freeze effect: Aquamarine Flask; other damage types can Freeze: Replica Soul Taker, The Three Dragons, Expedition's End)
    • This comment implies that damage taken from items is not from you. Only one test case, though, and there might be an inconsistency worth taking advantage of, so I'll leave things crossed out.

    Reversing chill

    • Winterweave (Ring)
    • Probably not: Stacking reduced Effect of Non-Damaging Ailments (and similar) above 100%.

    Self-damage

    Damage taken converted to cold

    Increased chill effectiveness

    • Auxium (Belt; maximum ES can be lowered with The Agnostic (available from passive tree, Skin of the Lords, and Dance of the Offered))
    • Increased effect from the skill applying Poison/Bleed when using The Golden Rule with Icefang Orbit or Venopuncture, such as Unbound Ailments (until your self-poisons/-bleeds expire, your self-chill can go higher but not lower unless any of your rings are removed)
    • Algor Mortis (Gloves)
    • Passives (incomplete; see also here and here)
    • Rares (search: effect of non-damaging, cold ailments)
    Notes
    • Hiltless doesn't work. (Reflected damage cannot cause status ailments.)
    • Spending/sacrificing Life does not count as a hit and therefore cannot chill.
    • Arctic Armour, The Brine Crown, a flask, Rare Boots with Cannot be Frozen, or Soul of the Brine King (3.16) might be useful when using Auxium.
    • Chaos Inoculation doesn't increase the effect of chills on you, but having a low maximum life does. (CI "hides" your maximum life and this hidden value is used for calculating chills and other effects on you.)
    • Please let me know if I've missed anything.

FYI: you can get soul eater up for almost 2 minutes without a header

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 12:47 PM PDT

Was just fooling around in POB and noticed that with the inclusion of all the mods related to flask effect duration, you can easily use the soulthirst belt to keep a mana flask active for almost 2 minutes if you include self-curse temp chains.

Hard to give the exact duration because POB doesn't calculate self-curse well and doesn't calculate increased effect of flask effect duration mods on cluster jewels. You can't even edit them.

    Oni-goroshi builds?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 01:06 PM PDT

I wanted to farm an oni at the beginning of the next league because I hate myself. And also love this unique.
So I need some advice on what to build with it.
Was thinking about tec slam chief but a one handed sword does't seem the best for a slam skill even though chief would be good with the endu charges node (also good for reducing the oni degen).
    Any other suggestion?
    Thanks!

don's lowlife steel skills build - does it work with cyclone?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2021 03:29 AM PDT

So I was planning out for playing don's lowlife steel build next league maybe. yes I know, balance changes blablabla, but I am just scouring ideas at the moment.

I had testleveled this build already a couple of months back and I was really impressed with its tankiness already on lowlevel. However, the problem I have with the build is: as I said its base is impale steel skills. and I hate them. with a passion. so I figured, theoretically from gear perspective it shouldn't be super difficult to switch the build to cyclone for example. dw swords, crit, impale, petrified blood, it all sounds - theoretically - doable with cyclone as well.

So the question is: is that actually doable? will this be an at least "okay" build? or will it be utter garbage with cyclone?

Brand recall effect on bossing damage

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 10:37 AM PDT

Setup: Storm brand with Runebinder, 3 brands total (clear is carried by explode chest anyway)

Assumption : when I cast brand recall, the two brands attached to the boss come back to me, all 3 brands hit the boss doing unattached damage assuming it is within targeting range. Two brands jump back on the boss the next time they activate, this time assuming it is withing attachement range.

So, in an ideal situation, brand recall gives a periodic boost of unattached damage x number of brands out, without compromising dps uptime. This works on an immobile boss I can facehug.

In a less ideal situation, like sirus or maven, brand recall removes the attached brands that would otherwise be dpsing, does no damage because they are beyond range, then my brands sit around me because the boss is outside attachment range?

Therefore I shouldn't use brand recall with storm brand?

    Playing gui_orioli's Holy Flame Totem

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 03:02 PM PDT

This is half an implementation/addendum to this guide half build help questions. I marked questions clearly.

We are playing Scion, we drop six Holy Flame Totems and leave. We survive because we don't get close to anyone and also we have 8441 Life+ES+Mana (with MoM) and very high regen on all three.

This is where I am at https://pastebin.com/6Li3jd09

I found the totem placement speed in the boots makes it much smoother.

I am not sure whether the CWDT+SRS+Blind+Combustion idea works. If it does, it should be useful. That's question #1

Crown Of The Inward Eye is superb in a build like this, DPS and lots of survivability. An uncorrupted one is very cheap, but even one with burning damage can be found for 30c or less this late in league.

The shield was surprisingly cheap despite the two very useful shaper affixes (+1 to maximum number of totems, 10% reduced reservation for socketed gems) it seems more expensive now, about 1ex. I guess I got lucky or something.

Some of the affixes to scale our damage are obvious (Adds # to # Fire Damage To Spells prefix, increased fire damage, cast speed, increased damage) but some are less obvious: spell damage is good but unlike the previous ones, it doesn't count in burning damage. Normal jewels have a separate prefix for % increased Cast Speed with Fire Skills which a) can be 5% instead of the 4% normal Cast Speed / Attack And Cast speed suffix b) can be can occur together with the % increased Cast Speed suffix. Note the trade site has a "pseudo" cast speed, I am not sure what's that about because I don't think it counts Attack And Cast Speed. Use explicit affixes and weighted sum of the three, you'd need to do it for two anyways (because of the fire one).

We have so many skills converting physical to fire it is converted 100% but also we are gaining fire based on it and a lot (45% from added fire damage lvl21, 5% from Divine Fury, 15% from Herald of Ash and then 5% goes to Lightning which gets further converted to Fire) so flat physical is even better than flat fire and Hypnotic Eye Jewels have "# to # Added Spell Physical Damage while holding a Shield" prefix and "Adds # to # Physical Damage to Spells" suffix.

Another big surprise for HFT is "Projectile Speed: Affects the distance that the projectile will travel as well as its speed". So the area your totems can cover is based on projectile speed. I am getting some from my wand and the gem quality.

Obvious improvements to me are +1 to all fire level on wand and better affixes on the jewel next to the scion starting point. Possibly Orb Of Storms could be replaced with Storm Brand, PoB gives it a higher crit chance, not sure what the disadvantages would be. This is question #2.

I think the next step will be Arsonist because of even more life regen and DPS. And then either Magmatic Strikes or the two small Totem Attack And Cast Speed nodes. The latter two is slightly more DPS but the small node between Arsonist and MS gives fire DoT which is useful for burning. Which one to get? Getting both would require lvl98 which is not realistic given my skills. This is question #3.

What do you good people see as cheap improvements :) ? This is question #4.

Help designing a Smite Mind of the Council build?

This sounds like it would be fun but my PoE PhD is centered mostly around casting. Any suggestions on tree, cluster jewels, gear and ascendancy?

Looking for HoT leagıe start idea

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 10:54 AM PDT

Hi people I never played autobombers before and as I see from videos HoT is extremely useful up to end game. So Is it possible to start with this skill in any way? as I can see scaling is somewhat a problem without the rings. Anyone have any information how could this be done in league start?

    Legacy Righteous Fire Items

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 04:01 PM PDT

Hello! I'm looking for any crazy, legacy items that I could get in Standard League to help with a meagre Righteous Fire build struggling along at 250k DPS.

I've tried looking on PoB and the wiki but not much has come up.

    Thanks!

Necro Max Corpsepact, Arcanist Brand Bladefall, CWDT Bladeblast - PoB Review Please

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 03:22 PM PDT

    Howdy,

TLDR: My PoB looks too ok for my taste, please tell me why it's probably shit.

    Preface:

Usually my self-made builds drop off > T5 maps, so I do not really trust my self-made PoBs. However the one below looks pretty reasonable at least damage wise, although eHP is a bit low. I'd really like some input if this could be somewhat red-map viable or if I'm overestimating damage output and survivability of this build.

    Build motivation:

I like max Corpsepact stuff but hate VD as my main skill (especially with the two brand AB+VD/AB+Desecrate playstyle), so I wanted auomated Corsepact with a different damage dealer. Eye of innocence seems best for self-damage, so we need many ignites from our main damage dealer. Firestorm is limited in hits/second, Storm brand does not hit fast enough. Bladefall seemed like a better option.

    Build mechanism:

The usual Eye of Innocence CWDT-VD driven Corpse Pact loop.

Arcanist Brand Bladefall: Low Aoe for good single target coverage, should give many ignites + pretty good damage itself

Bladeblast on lvl20 CWDT for some extra explosions

AssMark BoneOffering Steelskin automated via CWDT

    Damage:

Assuming we have max corpsepact (which should take ~6-7 seconds to ramp up fully based on crude calculations)

Bladefall: ~ 6 Mil. (assuming every cascade hits, calculated with 6% reduced dmg for cascades 2-5) With 70% of cascades hitting, this would be about 4 Mil DPS

Bladeblast: 2.9 Mil. with 40 blades. Should go of every 1.5 seconds or so, if 70% of Bladefalls hit. Assuming 50% of Blades hitting, about 1.5 Mil DPS

Big question is, how realistic are my bladefall hit assumptions?

    Problems:

Max attack block is nice, but I can't get max spell block

    eHP is pretty low

Mana pool is too low even for 30% MoM

Really socket starved. Wanted to go for lowlife petrified blood but couldn't fit it in.

    PoB: https://pastebin.com/r8CUq2Kf

I'm bad with cluster jewels, so I didn't include any of those shenanigans except Kitavas thirst. Probably a lot of optimization potential here?

I could include a timeless jewel, e.g. Immortial Ambition for ES sustain or corrupted soul for slightly higher eHP + somewhat better sustain

Gearwise I tried to stick to "not SSF but not really expensive". Rares are just life/res for now. A life/mana on spell hit ring should probably be included. Watcher's eye + clarity mana gain on hit, too. But I have no socket for clarity right now.

Aspect of the Crab Earthshatter Jugg Help

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 01:13 PM PDT

So I just found out about the Craiceann's armor set and I very much wanted to make a build that incorporated all of the armor pieces for the fun of it. I figured Earthshatter Jugg would be a fun build to try it out on since I haven't played very many Marauder builds. I still consider myself somewhat new to the game (500-ish hrs), so I'm not expecting this build to knock anyone's socks off or even be halfway decent, but I would love some feedback from some more experienced exiles! It's one of the few builds I've made mostly on my own.

I haven't given much thought to the items outside of the Craiceann's armor pieces, so I've just included some placeholders. Mostly looking for feedback on skill points and gem links.

p.s. I realize a two-handed weapon would probably give more dps, but I want to use the crab claw MTX on the shield 🦀

    Amulet crafting advice

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 01:01 PM PDT

After rolling some alterations i arrived at the malevolence reduced reservation. I thought i had an idea about using harvest to get physical damage over time but now i am not too sure.

What would be a safe way to get to an amulet with both those mods and maybe life.

Also not too sure about veiled orbs and aisling t4, there seems to be a projectile mod from that so maybe that is a good idea.

    Thanks in advance.

Any good league starting builds to just farm Heist for 3.16

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 12:11 PM PDT

Planning on doing some Heist at the start of the league for 3.16, even though I have to wait for the Patch Notes and Manifesto later on, but I am curious to know some potential builds that are good for heisting in terms of speed and tankiness, or either one of them (preferably speed).

    Theorycrafting FB+IceNova.

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 09:49 AM PDT

    https://pastebin.com/XQsRcLWM

MANY GEARSETS: Care the most about the midleague one.

Goal: Simulacrum. Philosophy: I like builds that can do the most possible on the least gear.

    High priority:

What should I anoint? Current frontrunner is Golem's Blood (10% inc life/1.6% life regen).

Is my damage multiplier even accurate? FB+IceNova expands from 2 frostbolts and doesn't redo the cast animation when reoccurring. 8x SEEMS accurate from testing.

How the hell do I get enough mana to cast ice nova? Normally recasts don't have mana costs but FB+IceNova skips recasts. >With Inspiration gem setup and max clarity I can sustain casts, but the nature of Inspiration makes this a bad idea unless I can find enough reduced mana cost. >With Arcane Surge gem setup and max clarity I can't even come close to sustaining casts. Cast speed is my most efficient stat to improve damage, and this will only harm mana economy further.

On-demand defense is good between flasks, enduring cry, molten shell, and VMS. Off-demand defense is fine; using Flesh and Stone/Retaliation Charm as stopgap (no vigilant strike because IDK what fortify changes incoming) honestly it'll be fine, inquis recovery and 100% freeze is great (also, does POB not properly track phys-damage-taken-as-ele for effective HP?)

    Low priority:

What supports do I move toward as my crit chance/multi gets better?

Is armour worth it? I'm using it because VMS is so good, but going more into ES with inquisitor recovery is an option too.

Thinking about the Asylum cluster: it grants 1.2% life regen and 44% reduced curse on you and 3% enemy inc dmg taken. With Gifts from Above, it also grants 1% block and 10% inc damage. however it does not show POB numbers and I am a pob warrior so no thanks :sunglasses:

    Comments:

Corrupted Soul is BONKERS with inquisitor regen; replace r.soul tether with the jewel whenever possible

empty flask slot for either mana or life or hybrid flask as necessary

Why is nobody using retaliation charm or replica soul tether they're so good

there's no way quartz flask is worth it for non-melee builds anymore right?

melee noob looking at tectonic slam

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 04:54 AM PDT

Hi, in my PoE career i play almost exclusively spellcasters so have no real clue about melee, but want to give it a try in 3.16 with tectonic slam.
Limited my choice of ascendancy at chieftain or juggernaut which both seems at pretty similar power level. But i dont know which one would be better for sustaining endurance charges.
Also dont know about crit or non-crit, are both viable or is crit necessary for decent level of damage?
Made quick passive tree for staff crit juggernaut version if any melee expert could tell me if its bullshit or somewhat reasonable.

    Glacial Hammer Raider?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2021 08:23 AM PDT

I'm trying to make a GH Raider work on paper in PoB but it always ends up pretty lack luster.

I'm well aware that GH is a rather poor skill and am not looking for this build to be extremely good, it's more for the memes and fun. Aesthetics and feel are a big part of this project. I dont actually expect to do all the content on this build tbh.

The idea is to toss frost bombs and use increased freeze %s to get a lot of freezes off with my GH. I'd prefer to go one handed though two handed may be the best way to go. I usually build a little more tanky than damage heavy and why I generally prefer one handers and shield over dual wield or 2 hand.

I'd prefer not to rely on Hydrosphere to deal good damage to bosses but, we'll see I guess.

I dont want to change from raider, as I enjoy the defensive buffs from the phasing tree and the frenzy charges will help pickup some slack on the GH. Along with all the cold/ele/ele pen nodes around the ranger.

I'd be open to another melee strike build on a raider too, was thinking perhaps double strike and swords (like I said though the builds less about optimal play and more about the gameplay, I am not interested in cyclone for instance) as there are quite a lot of great sword nodes around her as well.

I'm open to playing more complicated builds as well, and would prefer ones that use a couple skills rather than the usual one click zoomers most people post as build guides.

    Any thoughts/help would be appreciated.
