How to fix your build, for anyone coming to this sub for help

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:32 PM PST

Wrote this in response to a post but realised it was getting really long. Won't have every possible bit of info, and I'm sure I'm missing some things because I don't know everything, this is just a bit of advice to anyone posting here.

I'm certainly not advocating to not post here because this covers everything, this sub is very helpful and some builds are quite unique, where many of these points simply won't apply.

This is assuming you at least have Path of Building.

First thing I'd say is find top builds, and scour through their guides/videos. Mathil's builds I mention Mathil because he has some of the most widely used/copied builds are often a ton of tiny things that make the build end up to be incredibly high DPS, some builds use interesting unique interactions, some rely on flasks/certain mods (Vaal skill builds), some are just good gems and the right rare gear, and some are utilizing very expensive items (certain jewels placed near scion area, some belt with heads on it...) This can help a lot IMO.

TLDR; This game is really complicated.

The first thing you need to look at with any build is your gems.

    • What kind of gem is your main skill? Check its tags. For example, Molten Strike. It carries the tags Attack, Projectile, AoE, Melee, and Fire. This tells you what it is (both melee and projectile attack skill) how you can scale its damage (attack/projectile/AoE/fire).
    • If your damage is low, are your gems lvl 20? Are they optimal? If according to PoB the damage is high but in-game feels terrible, are you using Damage on full life but aren't at full life, or perhaps relying upon ailments for damage but using elemental focus? Especially on spell builds, this can be the main reason your damage is low.
    • Do you have a 6L? Tabula is pretty cheap, otherwise corrupted chests with the right colours could work, or a normal (i.e. not rare) 6L to try your hand at to get decent mods. If your build requires a unique chest, 5L is useable but keep in mind you simply won't have the same damage.
    • Do you have any supplementary supports (such as Vaal ancestral Warchief for attack builds, Vaal Righteous Fire for spell builds)
    • Any charge generating skills if needed (Orb of storms/storm brand power charge on crit, blood rage, enduring cry, cold snap) or curses for a similar purpose (assassin's mark, warlord's mark)
    • Defensive setups (CWDT with immortal call, or enfeeble or similar)
    • Golems can provide offensive or defensive capabilities, so check them out if you have room.
    • Curses are great. Rings can grant certain curses, some builds use blasphemy to apply to close enemies, some use Heralds with Curse on Hit for clearing, some use CWDT (as above). Keep in mind, against bosses they have severly lowered effectiveness.

So after all that, you can look at your gear.

    • What kind of movement skill do you want? Some prefer just running around with a quicksilver flask, some love shield charge, or swear by whirling blades. But depending on your build you may need to use a specific weapon, thus movement skill.
    • For melee - what kind of weapon do you need? Crit builds can benefit from foils, non-leech builds can use claws for LGOH, some builds like maces (namely behemoth mace for attack speed), etc. Figure that out, and buy/craft a weapon that suits your build. Are you going to dual-wield, or have a shield for extra defence/being able to use shield charge?
    • For spells - What kind of spell is it? BV benefits from phys gained as extra elemental damage, some benefit from a lot of cast speed, some (read: anyone that can afford to craft a multimod item) benefit from the new "non-chaos gained as extra chaos" mods combined for a lot of chaos damage.
    • Cover your res! First thing.
    • Get at least 60-70 life on each slot (honestly don't know the equivalent for ES, sorry), this will go a long way for helping your life pool.
    • Depending on the build, certain item bases can help with getting more damage, or more defence out of your build, but often at an additional cost. The 3 glove bases (Gripped, Fingerless and Spiked Gloves) grant more damage for projectile attacks, spells and melee damage respectively. Bone helmet grants more minion damage, two-toned boots grant resistances, Astral Plate grants +#% all resistances, etc.
    • Unique Flasks - depending on the skill/build, there are some unique flasks that are almost standard. Atziri's Promise is widely used on a lot of builds, and works very well with physical to elemental builds, as it utilises both damage mods. Wise Oak is great for elemental builds, Lion's Roar is used by some melee builds, Soul Catcher is required for Vaal skill builds, Dying Sun can be used for any build that benefits from more projectiles (MS, WO, any arrow skill, etc).
    • Flasks - Unless you're running lab, don't have two life flasks... Also, find a way to not need a mana flask (read: skill tree). First thing you want is bleed immunity on a flask, often on life. Pathfinder, for example, doesn't need any ailment immunity due to a ascendency node, but for the most part you want freeze immunity on something other than a life flask. After freeze immunity I'd go for curse immunity if you can grab it, but not essential. For life-based builds, using an instant (Seething) or half instant (Bubbling) are often used for the quick recovery of life, in addition to a immune to bleeding mod. Quicksilvers are for movement speed builds. Silver flasks grant onslaught, but this can be obtained from abyss jewels (see: tree). Sulphur flasks can be good for builds that stand still when doing damage, as it places consecrated ground on use. Diamond is essential for crit builds. Jade and stibnite are good for evasion based builds, and Granite is good for armour based. Basalt's effectiveness seems to scale worse the more armour you have, so only really use it on builds that doesn't use armour. Any of the single resistance flasks are more situational, and bismuth isn't really used.

    The skill tree.

    • Attack builds - Grabbing nodes specific to your weapon (claws, maces, axes, bows) etc.
    • Spell builds - Generic spell damage. If its a spell that can hit, choosing between EO or crit will change your gear, so make sure you know what you're choosing before gearing.
    • Defences for bottom of tree builds - Starting in Marauder, Duelist or Ranger areas, you'll probably want life over ES (but of course there are exceptions). All depends on gear, but you'd want to be somewhere in the ballpark of 160-190% increased life minimum(in my SC experience. I feel like if you're playing HC you know how much life you need). Some builds such as HoAG can afford to have a lot %increased maximum life on tree due to the high base damage of the Agony Crawler.
    • Defences for top of tree builds - Witch, Shadow and Templar allow for more choice (IMO) for your EHP. MoM is useful for builds that don't need to reserve much mana, ES has two choices within itself, Lowlife (to reserve more auras) or CI (to negate chaos damage bypassing ES without having to use a unique). On top of these, hybrid CI/life, MoM EB builds or pure life are still possible.
    • For top/right side of tree builds - Phase Acrobatics is also an option. Using the right boot enchant (and maybe an explicit dodge roll) can make Phase Acro even more useful.
    • Other defences - Armor is often used by Marauder or Duelist builds, and negates % of physical damage, which can grant more defence by converting the elemental damage dealt to you to physical. Evasion is interesting as it uses entropy to determine whether you are hit (its a bit of a long read). Some builds utilise leech or LGOH as defence by dealing damage to gain life. There's a few factors that come into these two defences. Leech is often used by Scion Slayers, or simply Duelist Slayers, as it grants overleech. LGOH gets better and better the more, and the faster you can hit the enemy.
    • Jewel slots - Your main skill may require jewels (MS, FB, EH, MO, etc.), so make sure to put them in the right place! PoB shows which jewel slots can be used for particular attribute jewels. Abyss jewels can grant some powerful damage mods, but they also grant useful things such as being able to blind enemies or chance to gain onslaught. Check POEDB for the total list of mods. Normal jewels are very useful too! %increased maximum life can help grant even more life in addition to area damage, crit, etc. Again, POEDB has a list of mods to look at. Some builds stack abyss jewels, which seems to produce filthy amounts of damage, but they are often expensive.
    • Anything past these, you may want to cover the small things - perhaps your attack build isn't sustaining mana, so take a mana leech node (Common one is the first node of the Essence Sap wheel or the middle node of the Vitality/Spirit Void wheel) or mana gained on hit jewel.

Bandits - The choice is pretty much Alira or two passives.

    • One may choose Alira for a few reasons. Start of league you may need the additional resistances, (and could also be crit), or are a crit build. There are of course some crit builds that would benefit from two passives, but Alira is a good choice for a crit build.

    Path of Building

    • If you're using PoB to calculate your damage and defences, think of which scenario it is on. Oftentimes you want to calculate your damage against Shaper/Elder, so make sure to have the option on.
    • Make sure to carefully look over the buffs you grant yourself. Perhaps you're using Point Blank or Far Shot, which changes how far the projectile needs to travel to deal maximum damage. Uniques can grant some buffs, Tombfists for example can intimidate, so tick that.
    • If you have charges ticked, can you actually generate these reliably throughout the boss fight? If not, don't tick them, as it will just give you false numbers.
    • Be careful which ailments you tick. Most of the time, people aren't shocking Shaper with full effectiveness.

These are pretty much all the things I'd check to see if my build feels off.

    Quick Noob Question

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 05:09 AM PST

I'm theory crafting an interesting concept for a build. My main question is about victario's influence. I don't have one yet or else I would test it. The reduced mana reservation aspect of it, would it reduce the 25% reservation cost of, say the Herald of ash, to 0% or is it a 30% reduction of 25%?

(Note: I'm only on act 3 because I'm a noob)

I need a build that I can finish the league out with... ~20 ex budget

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 04:03 AM PST

I have 11 "raw" ex and an unnatural instinct jewel I can sell or use. I just want something that I can use to complete my red maps and work on hopefully hitting 36 challenges for my first time.

I started the league with an arc trapper that felt weak as hell, but then I made a SB character that feels weaker than that. I just want to finish the league on a strong note. I have a ton of stuff I can also firesale to make currency.

I do not care what the build is - I just want something that can get me to 36+ challenges.

My account is https://www.pathofexile.com/account/view-profile/deviants0ul if you want to see what I have on my characters.

    Thank you.

Edit: Yea, I don't know how to make my post pretty with reddit formatting. Sorry for that.

LF: Solid melee build that can actually kill

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 04:53 PM PST

I have been playing POE since closed beta and I have built every build myself without even looking at lists of uniques to guide me. I've never used other people's ideas. And that shit is hard so I'm giving it up.

My best build ever is a block chance Gladiator topping out at 82% block for attacks and spells, 75% resists, lots of charges and using Molten Strike with Life on Hit + high attack speed. But he might as well have been using a fucking pool noodle to attack. At high levels, he simply couldn't shovel enough pain to kill bosses and would just eventually succumb to their attack or just bore me to death.

SO!! I'm looking for a melee build that can hang out in that hot hot heat but can also deliver adequate damage.

Teach me the ways of your people!!

    CI-Cerberus Limb-Aegis-Iron Reflexes-Escape Artist-Trickster

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:48 AM PST

High EV chest like Hyrri's to gain ES from Escape Artist. Gain EV from ES helm.

Precursor's Emblem with "You have Iron Reflexes while at maximum Frenzy Charges" to convert to armor.

"+1 to minimum Frenzy Charges" craft with 2 Pacifism jewels makes you always at maximum Frenzy Charges for full time Iron Reflexes.

Edit: That or make the trek to IR on the tree, grab Vaal Pact and the shield nodes.

Any cheap builds to play for the last month of the league?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 05:43 PM PST

I blasted all my chaos to get to Uber elder and managed to get him down for the first time. I feel like I'm done with my current character and am looking for a new one. My current character was a blade flurry juggernaut so mapping is awfully slow.

Looking for something cheap (200c), tanky with good life sustain that can map quickly.

Thought of jugg rf but honestly don't really want to play a jugg again. Any ideas?

    Hierophant scorching ray build help?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 05:19 PM PST

So I super binged this game way back but I can't find my old skill tree anywhere and dont remember that much.

It was a hierophant that used a staff with scorching ray (burning damage + efficacy + elemental focus + controlled destruction + swift affliction/empower )

and scorching ray totems (burning damage, elemental focus, efficacy, controlled destruction)

I would tag the enemies with an electric attack i dont remember then the scorching ray would do crazy damage

is this a known build? how can I find out what my old skill tree was if I dont have access to the character anymore?

    Any advice would be appreciated

LF: build suggestions, can't find something I love

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:45 AM PST

Looking for a build, probably for next league, but I keep finding faults with what I've been rolling. My chars can be seen:

    https://www.pathofexile.com/account/view-profile/Dokyo/characters

But the quick version is I have:

CoC Ice nova assassin - The one I've been playing the most, but I still feel really squishy, get one shot by betrayal sometimes in 14+ maps, some stuff like cursed king still wrecks me, but that might be a mechanical skill thing. I think this is probably my strongest and most fun char, it's just the squishyness that makes me want to throw my metaphorical controller (PC player) across the room sometimes. I think I've been lvl 89 for like 2 weeks now thanks to deaths.

BLS MS CI Scion - My newest char, pretty fun to play. Have most of the required gear, and feels somewhat tanky, but I find my ghost reaver leech just can't keep up sometimes. I think with the right watcher's eye this might turn into the strongest of my 4 chars, but I don't think I'll ever get the one I need. So again I guess it's the lack of sustain that puts me off sometimes. I tried to run a few of the mid tier yellow maps I had gotten on my CoC guy and this char did not fare well, but he also needs a lot of gear improvements in the non build dependent slots.

Arc Trapper - My league starter, still performs pretty well, but don't have the best gear for him. I like arc traps a lot, but I'm not a big fan of lightning spire which is my single target dps. The stationary damage over time nature of it kind of sucks, I also find I can have trouble with stuff that hits hard and just runs at me. Some of the higher level bosses and betrayal stuff can just isnta kill me. I could probably push this one a lot more, but just kind of got bored of it.

LL RF Guardian - Running this guy on low life with shavs and I had a lot of fun with him for a while, but managing the degen and the lack of damage compared to my other builds made me not play him for long once I got to the mapping stage. With RF off I can tank almost any reasonable damage, with it on though it can be rough to maintain when I'm getting hit. As much as I want to like RF I think it's just not my style in the end.

I'm aware all my guys could use better gear, but it looks like my main complaint is squishyness so I'm wondering what I might have fun with next league. I'd like to do uber elder next league which I haven't done before. I was thinking maybe some sort of fast bow build that makes it easier to dodge stuff, or maybe a summoner of some type (maybe ice golem) where I can mostly focus on damage avoidance while they do the work. I don't really know, that's why I'm here, I know lots of you have played many builds. Looking at my complaints about the above builds any clue on something I might enjoy? I've thought about HoWA Jugg since they seem pretty tanky, but I don't know if I want to to MS again.

As far as the rest of this league I'll probably try to push my CoC or BLS MS as far as I can, not sure which yet.

    abyss build

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 03:20 PM PST

hey guys, i've been searching for some time now about a full abyss socket build but i havent found any (at least for this betrayal league). is that build no longer sustainable in this day? since i havent found any build, i actually have no idea what skills it will go with or if it will be any good to classes other than scion. i can imagine though that i must use a 2 handed weapon for a 6 link (or an onigoroshi) and that the 2 hand weapon should be either a pseudo 7 or 8 link to compensate having no other way to get good enough gem links. i can also see that i'll be hard-pressed to find elemental resistance since i'll only have lightpoacher, amulet and rings for those. but i still wanna be able to build one since the set looks freaking cool.

Summoner build to close the league

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:11 AM PST

After completing everything that I planned for this league with my EleHit Ascendant, as the title explains I'm looking for a summoner build to close the league.

    Things to take in consideration:

    Currently have 8ex in bank

never (!!!!) played summoner build (usually my options are melee and bow builds)

Can you please suggest any build that may "change my mind"?

Looking for ~100ex build, ideally something fun to play with a Headhunter

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 02:22 PM PST

I'm leaning towards something like a tornado shot MF build that's super fast but honestly I'm not sure lol

It'll be my first time buying a headhunter so maybe something that's particularly good with it?

Open to anything really, I've played winter orb and toxic rain so far this league, liked winter orb due to the speed but recently sold all the gear to flip stuff to fund this next build.

What are all the "auto attack" builds (like BV) that you can cast then just run through the map with?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 12:26 PM PST

Looking for a build that I can cast once in a while then just run through the map with, must be:

    • league starter possible, for new leagues
    • FAST zoom zoom movement speed
    • doesn't have to be a good boss killer at all, more for farming up currency in maps/delve/syndicate

I know of BV & winterorb, but those are so slow moving even with flame dash...another option is bow character with mirage archer? But I heard bow starters are pretty hard if is a new league.

    SmarmyPapsmears Stone Golem Showcase

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:41 AM PST

Just hit 100 on BSC, so I'm posting this here.

    https://youtu.be/f0KoIbm63U0

I am intentionally getting hit to show the damage reduction/regen levels of this build (LOL didn't listen, the video has my wife talking in the background and she just found out I hit 100 and knows nothing about poe)

    https://pastebin.com/gUE0Tvxs

(PoB is edited to show closer to actual damage numbers, since Elementalist ascendancy is still not added correctly)

Realistically with 7x Stone Golems each doing 260k Shaper DPS, real actual DPS is going to be close to 2 mil.

My version of the build has 8.3k ES, with slightly over 2000 ES regen.

    Pros:

Stone golems also taunt and block attacks, so this build feels pretty dang safe.

    Melts bosses.

Super regen = easy Delve farming because we don't take damage until about 80 stacks of darkness.

    Cons:

Feels a bit slower clearspeed than Flame Golems.

    DEFINITELY NOT budget friendly.

What could I do to take my Arc Trap build higher?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:19 AM PST

Of course, I want to keep a healthy ratio of DPS and Survivability.

I'm trying to work on balancing my resistances for wise oak and maybe get some more HP on gear. Ideally I'd like to keep as much chaos res as possible. I'm finding it very hard or EXCEPTIONALLY expensive to find gear upgrades. Maybe there's some unique interaction I'm missing or something else I don't know about. So, what do you think?

Currently at work so I can't link my character or PoB directly, but you should be able to load it into PoB. Account name: zczu -- Character name: Jordon

Crafting Scepter For Winter Orb Build

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:25 AM PST

    Hello,

I got a high level shaper scepter. I am trying to find a decent way to craft this to get some solid increases for my winter orb scepter. I was fiddling with PoEDB and am thinking that for the investment going with Aberrant and Aetheric fossil. Then rolling these until i get

Gain #% of Elemental Damage as Extra Chaos Damage

Then a spell damage or added chaos/fire dmg to spells. Then an open for crafting

Gain #% of Non-Chaos Damage as extra Chaos Damage

For suffix guess cast speed or cold dmg would be good.

Is this the best approach or is there a better option out there? To get a decent wep for winter orb.

    Cheers!

Need help with a Lancing Steel and POB

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:50 AM PST

    Here is the POB: https://pastebin.com/c8bWNSxy

I only really have time for one char per league so rerolling isn't an option. Willing to respect if need be. I only have a few exalts worth of currency and I'm not sure what to do. I have beaten three guardians with 1 being deathless on a vaaled map. I like the skill even though everyone seems to hate it.

I have 145 map bonus and I can do t15/16s pretty easy, but my POB DPS seems painfully low at 85k. I want try to improve that first. Any advice on how to get my DPS up would be great.

Any other advice would be great too. I know some of my stuff needs work.
