A look down memory lane -- A retrospective look at some overpowered interactions that newer players missed out on.

From the top of my head in no particular order:

    • Cast on death + minions

      • You used to be able to summon minions with cast on death giving them a 300%+ more multiplier. It was insane but also a huge pain to have to do it every time you logged in because spectres didn't persist back then.
      • there was an enemy that had a skill called unrighteous fire, which was just like righteous fire but no degen. It scaled with spectre life and damage, along with cast on death it would melt everything.
    • On the heels of that, snap-shotting!

      • You could summon 6 link minons, with a bunch of gear that increased minion damage, then switch to better defensive gear and even take out the support gems (for more space) and the minions would keep all the damage bonuses they had when you summoned them. (this also enabled you to give half your zombies the bonuses from Mon'tregul's Grasp)
      • Snap shotting even worked on blade vortex, but in a different way. I can't remember exactly how it worked but I think it worked like this: cast one stack of 6 link damage bv, then cast the rest of your stacks with faster casting/spell echo. and it would do the damage of the 6 link. (i might've gotten that backwards though)
      • Snap-shotting also worked with auras, to cast more on lower reserved (reduced mana used to work with reservation costs).
    • Speaking of blade vortex, it used to have 50 blades that all hit independently of eachother.

      • This was abused with power charge on crit for perma power charges for any build
      • Combined with pathfinder or the harvest axe gave you infinite flasks charges. (there was no cooldown on flask charge generation)
    • this gave birth to worm blaster builds

      • worm blaster builds used to work with cast on melee kill(no cooldown, casts every linked spell at once) to cast a billion spells at once by killing all your worms and then refilling your worm flasks instantly.
    • The taming + emberwake

      • used to be able to give insane damage because emberwake did not have a limit on how many ignites you could apply to an enemy.
      • this was particularly effective with eye of innocence cwdt builds
    • COC used to have (edit) a very small cooldown and would cast all linked spells at the same time

      • it was meta for a long time because of this, there were also a lot of wand builds using coc
      • Mjolner had no cooldown either and was a very expensive item, mostly used with discharge and voll's protector + voll's devotion (also very expensive)
    • Instant leech was a thing (from old vaal pact or vinktars)

      • bv and legacy vinktars (and even without) with enough es would just face tank everything.
      • combining this with the wretch belt could almost double your damage.
    • You used to be able to prolif ignites to the whole screen. It was super fun (one tap on flameblast)

      • You used to be able to perma freeze bosses. Also low damage supports could prolif freeze the whole screen.
    • reflect used to be a random mod on enemies and full chaos conversion was meta at a point - particularly spark + voltaxic rift(expensive!)

    • ghostbusting

      • people used to use empires grasp's reverse knockback with cyclone or bv and suck up the tormented spirits in a map and have them affect every mob then kill them for crazy profits.
    • cast when stunned build

      • after cwdt was changed to have level requirements someone found a way to self stun using a combination of scold's bridle and self curse with the old punishment curse.
    • cwdt-enduring cry-immortal call

      • warcries used to be triggerable and this was the go to defensive setup. (also immortal cry lasted way longer and with some investment could be on permanently)
      • frostwall used to be used as well since it had no cooldown
    • double dipping

      • ignites and poisons used to double dip - increases in damage would affect both the base damage and the ignite or poison scaling them to ridiculous levels.
      • poison minions would also double dip with the minion damage stat
      • when bv was changed, it used to have "more damage" per blade (for a short while) this made poison bv ridiculous.
    • grand spectrum jewels

      • there was no limit on the number of jewels, with enough jewel sockets you could get over 1000% increased elemental damage with the viridian jewel
    • essences

      • essence of delirium would give you a 1000dps decay to all hits which was augmented by the support gems in the weapon.
      • essence of hysteria's "Drops Burning Ground while moving, dealing 2500 Fire Damage per second" used to have no level requirement allowing you to essentially walk to maps.
    • honorable mentions:

      • Skyforth used to be bis and super expensive
      • people used to stack item quality and do group runs of piety with one Magic finder culling for those sweet sweet unique drops.
    • just remembered eternal orbs - i never had one myself, don't know how rare they were when they dropped but so OP

      • An Eternal Orb is a currency item that creates an imprint of an item. The imprint can be used to revert the item to its former state after it has been altered by other currency items.
    • from /u/Pjatteri

      • Shotgunning. Back in the days every single skill that fired multiple projectiles could shotgun if the target was close enough. This also applied to monsters, turning all the mobs and map mods with 2 additional projectiles to actually deal 3x damage to you from melee range.
    • from /u/Distq

      • BV stacking - After they changed BV to only allow 1 instance of it, it was bugged to where you could get max stacks with one set of links and then press any number of linked BVs and they would all apply 10-stack damage independently of eachother. -Meaning that for a while the highest damage link for BV was another BV.
      • Secondary damage from projectiles on frost wall. - Spells like KB and LA were the highest single target abilities in the game since their explosions would all deal damage to one target upon exploding on frost walls.
    • from /u/tw3lv3l4y3rs0fb4c0n

      • In the early days of the Golemancers, Golems used to keep on fighting after you've died. Also they were unkillable. So by staying in the dungeon after dying you could watch your golems kill the boss for you.
    • from /u/ljust4fun

      • multistrike worked with cyclone
      • unlimited sextants allowed blocking of unwanted mods to essentially never roll bad mods
      • aegis aurora was OP and made builds nearly immortal (just look at some grandmasters)
    • from /u/revtje

      • There was a notable in the passive tree that gave x% increased effect on buffs on you called Inner Force. Very useful together with aura snapshotting, blood rage etc.
      • Low life was very good and Shavronne's Wrappings was one of the most expensive items in the game. + Crown of Eyes used to work with Pain Attunement keystone + Blood Rage used to give 35% increased attack speed when on low life.
      • Arctic Armour used to give a flat physical damage reduction and drain mana while moving. A high level AA with inner force meant that most trash mobs couldn't damage you
    • from /u/GatitusHierophant

      • Spork totems - Sparks that forked had their duration refreshed and could hit the same target again, with 2 or 3 totems (the max possible amount at the time) you could kill everything with swarms of sparks (OP note spark was much better back then, they reset after bouncing so they could hit targets again, and didn't have a max distance from you where they dissapeared)
      • Vaal fireball With GMP used to launch 4 extra projectiles for every fireball, resulting in 128 fireballs, 256 with spell echo
    • from /u/keyviac

      • There was a time where Acrobatics didn't reduce your block chance (and block was generally easier to get). There was a ranger build with max (Spell-)Dodge and max (Spell-)Block with some more defensive layers. It was pretty much unkillable.
      • Temp Chains could be increased so much that ot would slow non uniques by (almost?) 100%
      • Until quite recently Phase Runs reduced visibility to enemies could be increased to 100% so mobs would not attack anymore.

Just started my first character and got lucky

I'm Buzaks, one of the 5 Conquerors coming in 3.9. I've killed 558 Shapers/Uber Elders and still haven't received the Celestial Hideout. AMA.

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 09:00 PM PST

I am not joking. 558 Shaper/Uber Elder kills (478 Shaper and 2 Uber Elder kills in the last 5 days) and I still don't have the Hideout. I've checked Helena's Hideout list already, I really don't have it. What am I doing wrong? Is there a hidden requirement to obtain the Hideout? What the hell is going on?

To the person handing out free stacks of currency items:

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 01:14 AM PST

You made my husbands day!! Hundreds of silver coins and alchemy orbs might not seem like a lot to end game players but to a new player it makes a huge world of difference. It was literally his first trade with someone and we've both been a bit intimidated to trade or interact much with others as we've come to PoE so late in the game. He has about 40 hours logged and me 100 - so it's enough to know the value of these items and to feel tremendously grateful!!

(His name started with E and was all in capital letters - thanks so much stranger!)

If you are interested in PoE lore, you should check these videos

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 01:54 AM PST

I'm sorry if this was already posted or already known (i doubt it since the views and likes aren't very high), but this youtuber made a series of videos to explain the lore of every act of Path of Exile. They are very well made imho, and she covers also the story of the main character and the place we visit. If you are interested, this is the link of the first video of the series https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loVRzJ30FzY

    Favorite quote from the campaign.

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 01:30 PM PST

"There is no shame in falling to a God. Shame lies only in refusing to rise again."

Ofc this is Sin after the Kitava fight, he is and always has been my favorite NPC throughout the entire campaign. He has such a lean voice, if you can call it that, which occasionally booms (most notably when he comes in to harvest a God). The rest of the quote is pretty nice too but this completely sold me on him.

    How about you folks?

In PoE 2, it will probably be worth it to always have a 1 or more 6links with Cast on Death (at least for softcore) :)

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 01:09 PM PST

since we are probably going to have more 6links than we can use!

Why does Melee have to heavily invest into AOE but Rangers dont have to invest into Projectile Speed at all?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 01:55 PM PST

The disparity between melee skills and ranged skills has been too big for way too long.

I understand that the basic idea of Melee is to be up close in combat and ranged is to kill stuff from far away. But in PoE, killing things fast with low defenses from far away is better than being close, slow and tanky. There is simply no advantage for melee over ranged skills in PoE.

One of the main problems of Melee always was the AOE. The range of ranged attack skills is too far for literally zero investment while Melee Characters have to heavily invest into AOE and sacrifice alot to achieve decent radius.

I wonder why they never reduced base range or base projectile speed for projectiles and gave us more options to increase the proj speed, so that ranged attack skills have to invest into proj speed aswell.

How do you stay sane with pyroclast mines?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 02:41 AM PST

Last couple of days I have been trying to build a pyroclast miner for fun. Damage is good.. for the character, but unfortunately, damage to me (the player) is also kinda high! My eyes hurt, my wrist hurts, and I can't see anything on the screen and sometimes get one shot by some random enemy I could not see.

How do you manage to stay sane while playing this miner? Do you use any specific MTX that reduces the eye strain and screen visibility? About the wrist pain, I don't think it is specific to pyroclast but for all miners I guess. How do you experienced miners manage to deal with that?

Would be cool to place/pull maps, uniques from these as guild tabs

Newbie question on starting the game

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 09:59 AM PST

    Hi,

I recently started the game in the league, and as I understand it, the next league cycle is around Dec 22nd. Given that there's a month left, should I wait for the next league to maximize time? I'm a casual player, playing 1 or 2 hours a day. Will I be able to even complete the chapters in time?

    Thanks!
