Wouldn't it be nice if Essence Mobs dropped Rares Modified by one of their contained Essences?

I feel like it would be a nice little additional RNG roll for a mob that is otherwise fairly boring.

[Discussion] The economy of PoE - I'm amazed, puzzled, and anxious at the same time

    Posted: 04 Feb 2019 06:01 AM PST

I just started recently (about 2 months ago, but really started playing 4 weeks ago). So I'm still only a few inches deep into the seemingly bottomless rabbit hole. I started on Standard with an Arc Totem Hiero, and realized I like Delve more than anything, so I re-rolled a MS Jugg on League a week ago. While I never liked trading that much and preferred SSF in D2, in PoE that is different.

    • The reason why I'm AMAZED is because previous trading systems have been based on artificial currency systems (gold in D3, PGs/SoJs in D2). What made them artificial was that they had no natural equivalent to value. Many currencies in our real world used to be based on gold stored in some central bank, or have some other value equivalent - D3 gold and D2 SoJs didn't really have that, so artificial sinks were created (e.g., D2 SoJ vendoring to spawn ubers). But using a not clearly hierarchical, multi-layered system as PoE does is simply ingenious. There's even scientific research about it (haven't read it in detail yet).

    • The reason why I'm PUZZLED is because as someone new to the game, the amounts that I read are just ridiculous. I'm at level 91/T15 maps (standard) and soon to be in red maps easily (league) and sitting at around 1-2ex of "wealth", everything accumulated, and just a few dozen chaos as liquid assets. But whenever I tune into any random stream, people have dozens or even hundreds of exalts. "Starter builds" offer low budget recommendations for items that are sometimes 1ex+. I know that streamers play a lot and therefore are rich. I know that poor people don't post on Reddit. But after playing a lot for the past 4 weeks, I still feel like a freaking noob because I can't afford some of the simplest, build-enabling items. And that brings me to the last point...

    • The reason why I'm ANXIOUS is because almost everytime I see a rare item being posted here or shared on a stream or so and people are gasping and discussing how many exalts it's worth, I'm like "hm, I would've sold that". Like 99% of the time I don't see the value. I tried to familiarize myself with more builds than just my two to learn what's valuable, I use the PoE trade macro to check rare values a lot, I tried to memorize some of the guides like this one. But there is just so much tacit knowledge in this game, and it makes me almost anxious to play, because "what if I just sell an item that's worth a few ex (trade) or enables a cool build (SSF)"? A loot filter can't pick up rare affixes, and you cannot price check every rare. So yeah, I'm still playing, and I know eventually I'll learn more and more and make less mistakes, but damn, it seems like a crazy uphill battle.

Anyways, I needed to get this out. I wonder if anyone feels the same way. And if anyone has any advice for a bloody noob who is willing to learn, but just feels for every question that I find one answer to, it uncovers five additional questions. The depth of this game is just incredible. (Yes I know SSF would just get rid of the "economy" but then I'd be equally paralyzed about potentially selling an item I might use in the future; with trade league I can at least get all those sub-1c items back easily ;-))

I know I'm beating a dead horse, but it would be really nice if we could use non-claw MTX over claw items.

    Posted: 04 Feb 2019 11:34 AM PST

I actively avoid builds that use claws because I don't enjoy the aesthetic.

[Racing] Difference between Standard and Betrayal for early Acts

    Posted: 04 Feb 2019 09:31 AM PST

Having witnessed some fun Kammell Races, I elected to give it a shot, as I used to really enjoy racing back in 1.x. I saw that the requirements to enter the race was a 2h A5 Kitava run with all skill points + lab done, and it turns out to be a pretty fun run with Inquisitor Storm Brands.

After watching a few VoDs for gem setup, tree, etc. my first full run ended at 2h24. Not bad, but pretty far from the requirement. I ended up doing 8 full runs, my last 4 being 2:06, 2:07, 2:03 and 2:04. Sub 2h looked possible, but would require early MS boots and an A1 Quicksilver drop.

At this point, I chanced upon Waggle doing an A10 kitava run (which he nailed with an impressive 2h56 time). I learned a few things, but more importantly, I realized that people run on Standard, not Betrayal. The reason is simple: you often get locked into having Fortifications every zone, and they mess up with layouts.

I asked around a bit, but it seemed no one had compared the times between the two, so here are some splits.

My first Standard run was an easy 1h56, but felt like I was lucky on gear. 2nd ended sub 1h55, with an impressive 1:54:59, with no particularly lucky drop. Layouts are a bit different, but they're generally much shorter and simpler.

I didn't expect such an obvious difference between the two, but considering the runs are ~120mins, it's an 8+ mins or ~7% difference simply for switching to Standard and not having to deal with fortifications. It might be better in Betrayal to clear a fort and hope for Research, which didn't seem to mess up the layouts as badly.

All in all, an interesting experiment, and now I really hope GGG brings back races, as it's in a way better state now than back in the early Seasons. No more OOS spam, much faster load times, MS craft/recipe, guaranteed QS...

Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to a new/temp league for that day1 rush of reaching maps without a single break.

    tl;dw: Read the bold text.

~50 sec Minotaur clear, vaal storm call, not optimized.

It seems rather odd to me that there's a way to benefit from Minion Attack speed, but not Cast Speed.

Evasion vs armor vs energy shield and being one shotted at high levels

    Posted: 04 Feb 2019 11:01 AM PST

From what googling I could do, it seems that it's a semi common experience for people to do fine in most end game content, but sometimes get "one shotted" by high level syndicate members (usually level 75 or more). But many more people scoff at the idea that they are ever a threat, even in end game maps.

It occurred to me that most of the discussions I found just talk about total effective HP and making sure resists are maxed. I couldn't find anything that was very recent and very detailed on how different this experience might be for evasion and armor builds. My main (first character ever) does energy shield. My total of energy shield and HP is just over 7K, but I noticed that some big physical hits in yellow and higher maps can drop me quickly (even if not in one literal hit). Syndicate members definitely seem to be a larger threat than anything else in the maps.

I would love to hear from anyone who thinks end game syndicate are especially easy or hard and what defense you use.

I would like alternate ways to control my minions

    Posted: 04 Feb 2019 01:03 PM PST

Can we please have alternative methods of interacting with our minions? I've been playing other games (namely DCSS) that have a really pleasant mechanic where you can scream at your allies and have them do different things, like so. It would be very nice - even without making any changes to minion ai - if I could just instant cast command them to gang up on something without having to do an awkward dance type thing to try and get my zombies and such to aggro to things I'd play minion builds so much more. It could be white skill gems or just a ui element that appears if you have a minion of any sort (other than harbingers) active or even a regular skill gem that just makes all your minions teleport/dash/jump/whatever to a specific enemy or retreat or follow you or stop attacking entirely. Gathering a massive army of minions and then giving them all the collective "KILL" command to go in on a single enemy and generally do your actual bidding instead of just wandering around would make me feel amazing and would make playing minions feel really engaging and fun overall. Just my thoughts.

Cast When Damage Taken does not trigger exactly at its damage threshold.

    Posted: 04 Feb 2019 01:26 AM PST

I discovered this (rather unfortunate) fact with my attempt at a Scold's Autominer. My Volatile Dead Mines cost 132 mana; Each use deals 528 damage to me, and I have zero physical mitigation (no armor, no pantheon mitigation). Level 1 CWDT has a damage threshold of 528 damage. I tried unspeccing Zealot's Oath (so I had zero regen at the time of use) but that doesn't do anything, either

    Great alternatives to T16 UGS?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2019 07:34 AM PST

    Hey Exiles!!

I am playing a freezing pulse MF char and am looking for a map with high density and quite open layout (freezing pulse sucks at narrow hallways or doors etc. cause it gets stuck + id want to use breach zana mod)

Also i´d want pretty good sextant location with mainly whites + easy to sustain shaper / elder pingpong. (I dont know if i did it wrong but UGS fails to maintain that ping pong quite a lot, cause it gets attacked by shaper from many points on the map)

Good Div Cards/ Item Bases would also be very nice.

Side note: I am not looking for a map with same density as UGS, im aware that its one of the most densitys of all maps, im just looking for one where my freezing pulse can shine without getting stuck everywhere.

I googled a lot and somehow i couldnt really find recent 3.5 posts about this topic.. maybe im blind and id apreciate if u could link a thread like that if u´ve seen one.

    Thanks everyone !!!
