The Gaming Bookclub votes to play Path of Exile for April!

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:56 AM PDT

    Hello!

I'm from a community called The Gaming Bookclub on discord - each month we vote on and play games together. And this month, Path of Exile won the vote!

Most of us are complete newbies to the game, so any help and advice would be super appreciated, and if anyone wants to join us as we fumble around in PoE you are more than welcome - discord link. We always try to pull in at least a few veterans each month from the games we play, so we can get some ideas for events and other fun stuff we can try out. Hope to see some of you in game!

Kammell's SSFHC Synthesis Demigod Race to 80! Open Participation! April 27th, 8pm CET

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 09:19 AM PDT

    Hi, everyone!

I'm posting this on behalf of Kammell to let you all know the details of the race later this month! As the title says, this race is open participation, which means everyone will be able to sign up and enjoy the event! Once the league is set up, we will begin invites, and we will add participants until we reach the cap for the amount that is allowed in a private league.

I will update this post to reflect when invites are active so please bookmark this post or check back often!

    Race Criteria:
This is an SSFHC Synthesis Race that will have no added mods.
The race ends when the Rank 1 person of each class hits level 80.
Class = Base class regardless of ascendancy.

    Countdown Link:
    https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/generic?iso=20190427T20&p0=48&msg=Kammell+SSFHC+Synthesis+Demigod+Level+80+Race+---+April+27th+8+pm+CET&font=cursive

    Look out for casting by:
    TBD

    Prizes:
Overall Rank 1 = 30% bonus from prize pool
Rank 1 of each class will get 10% of the prize pool

Can help with prize pool if you'd like here:
    https://paypal.me/pools/c/8dxsJ82Oc3

We won't be listing a roster, but hoping for a great turn out. I am personally very excited to see how this format of race goes down! While we can expect some classes to use the Storm Brand meta and be fiercely competitive, I'm very excited to see what sort of creativity and ascendancies we'll see from other classes!

See you guys on the 27th!

I'm happy there's new content every few months

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 08:13 AM PDT

I'm just tired to see the never ending complaint threads on the sub, there are some good points being made, but it's getting redundant, so I just wanted to say that I'm happy I have new content to play every few months, even if it's not the most amazing content every single time. You might be surprised, but I'm actually having fun playing the game right now.

    What criticism do leagues receive?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 11:47 AM PDT

So far mayor criticism received by leagues have shown a combination of:

    • Having to go outside the game for basic info
    • Too much work for not guaranteed reward
    • Too much inventory space just hoarding in order to get something good
    • Too much RNG
    • Too many bugs

    And minor criticism of leagues:

    • Low rewards
    • Too difficult
    • Not enough boss encounters
    • Overly hyped advertising

    Let's loosely analyze the Leagues:

Let it be clear, this is a recollection of the sentiment of the community that League, I did not agree sometimes.

    Talisman (Heavily Criticized):

    • Having to go outside the game for basic info
    • Too much work for not guaranteed reward
    • Too much inventory space just hoarding in order to get something good
    • Too much RNG
    • Not enough boss encounters

The work and knowledge needed to get one of the nice Talismans was too much, even having a math formula.

    Perandus (Mostly Liked):

    • Too much inventory space just hoarding in order to get something good (mostly coins)

Just hoard coins until Cadiro offers something good, meanwhile have fun with extra density.

    Prophecy (Meh):

    • Having to go outside the game for basic info (but not too much)
    • Too much RNG
    • Low rewards
    • Not enough boss encounters

Not many of us knew what the prophecy was about, but you could always check your phone for info, it was just a quick look at the wiki.

    Essence (Meh):

Kind of flew under the radar, since it came along with Atlas update. But it was always nice to see an Essence.

    Breach (Mostly liked):

Free density, guaranteed Splinters, almost secured boss encounter, nice rewards.

    Harbinger (Mostly disliked):

    • Too much inventory space just hoarding in order to get something good (League Uniques)
    • Low rewards (Shards of shards)

Kind of flew under the radar, since it came along with The Fall of Oriath update. But it was always nice to see a Harbinger, it was free density.

    Abyss (Mostly liked):

    • Too much RNG
    • Not enough boss encounters

The most criticism it got was the lack of Lich encounters and then the RNG for it to drop something good.

    Bestiary (Mostly disliked):

    • Having to go outside the game for basic info
    • Too much inventory space just hoarding in order to get something good (Glad we have the Menagerie, if beasts would have been items it could have been way worse)
    • Too much RNG
    • Low rewards
    • Not enough boss encounters

Nets. Sure, the encounters were cool, but once it was in your Menagerie you didn't do much with it.

    Incursion (Mostly liked):

    • Too much RNG

The mayor criticism this League got was the RNG for the rooms and the RNG for the rewards. The boss encounters happened every 11 instances. Maybe too much speed meta?

    Delve (Loved):

    • Too much inventory space just hoarding in order to get something good (but not really, we just hold fossils until we got the one that matched what we wanted)
    • Too much RNG (from boss drops, it was already hard to get the boss, then you had to be lucky to get the reward you needed)
    • Too difficult (Adjusted at the beginning of the League the EMP dude and the on death effects back then were scary)
    • Not enough boss encounters (Aul, were are you?!)

The mayor complaints were: "more sulphite", "more bosses" which is basically: we want more of the League.

    Betrayal (Conflicted):

    • Having to go outside the game for basic info (Encounters rewards and unlocks locations)
    • Too much RNG (veiled unlocks and encounters)
    • Too many bugs
    • Low rewards (Catarina drops and board reset, glad we have the side safehouses)
    • Too difficult (Adjusted at the beginning of the League)
    • Not enough boss encounters (Catarina took a while to get)
    • Overly hyped advertising (Somehow we expected the Boss to rotate too)

I'm quite sure it was a 50/50 like/dislike ratio. I still don't know if I liked the League or the update. Intervention tho.

    Synthesis (Mostly disliked):

    • Having to go outside the game for basic info
    • Too much work for not guaranteed reward (Yeah, annuls, I know, but at 43 chaos, not a good option)
    • Too much inventory space just hoarding in order to get something good
    • Too much RNG (base, ilvl, synthesis, not guaranteed drop from boss that is already rare)
    • Too many bugs (I liked Betrayal, but now I hate it)
    • Low rewards
    • Too difficult (One shots are not fun inb4 "just don't get hit" 4head guys)
    • Not enough boss encounters
    • Overly hyped advertising (Onslaught boots)

Synthesis hits all the marks, no contest there. All the things that were criticized on other Leagues were applied to this. I want to say free density, but if the decay hits you quick, you won't get it.

Bosses can be incredibly, unbelievably frustrating when your only Cortex of the league spawns looking like this

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:13 PM PDT

I hope the next league (and every league thereafter) isn't a "micro manage new resources and craft slightly better items" league

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:08 PM PDT

Collecting, storing and managing all of the resources in this game is getting exhausting

As a casual, this is the worst league to me since Essence league.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 02:16 PM PDT

Before I begin, I just want to say that I'm a Taiwanese. English isn't my first language, but still, feel free to point out any mistake I made.

I play Path of Exile since the beginning of Taiwan server, I think the first league I play was Rampage league, and I quit temporary during Atziri first appearence and late Perandus league. I enjoy this game so much that I brought my ex girlfriend to play with me, I even spent the first time we sleep in one bed playing PoE, so you know how obessed I am. I've completed uber elder every league since 3.3.0, and 36 challenges both Breach league and Incursion league.

This league has been a very bad experience for me. Sure, I love those new channeling skills and chaos skills, but the league mechanic is more frustrated than playing Dark Souls. I hate decay with all my heart, it just stop player from doing what they want. Take Incursion as example, you should choose which architect you want to kill because there is a map tell you where they located, but memories fragment didn't have that, instead, you have to guess where to go or stop and observe where the decay start. I know it's reasonable for GGG asking us look at the decay first before we begin. Then what about in the nexus? Of course we already knew where the portals are, but I've got some mod that give me extra loot such as breach splinters and I want them all, so the decay lock me in a small room with no exit. I lost the memories fragment so I have to go back farm more map to get to next node. This happened so many times. I thought nexus is just a big reward platform, but it actually just a pretty candy I can see but I can't reach. Decay needs to stop happening in nexus, I already claim that memories, why am I still losing it and losing all my reward just because I want to explore the whole memories?

I haven't look into the item synthesis mechanic, and I heard you have to check a huge data chart so you can craft anything useful. I could do that, but I never had the motivation to do it, I just leave every synthesis item that looks strong in my stash, hoping someone would buy them. I would rather play DMC5 than spend time doing research that only rich or lucky people can enjoy.

I'm sorry, this is the first time I post in a forum in English, I know this post might seem a little bit too messy, but it's five in the morning and I'm really frustrated.

Edit: People seems to be upset about my definition of casual player. First of all, I play at Taiwan server as I said before, almost everyone I know have the ability to complete uber elder and 36 challenges, so it doesn't seems like a big deal to me. I only play at global server during Breach league and Legacy league, I didn't really interact with anyone except my ex girlfriend, we spamming shaped strand furiously, that's why I got the money to bought the completion of challenges back in Breach. Incursion was pure luck, I six-link an Inpulsa, two loreweave and many rare chest, by selling them, I was able to get a headhunter in one month since the league begins. By abusing headhunter, elemental hit, T16 underground sea, I completed 36 challenges. How about Synthesis league? I haven't even completed any T12 map yet, I'm a total casual player this league specifically.

This is the only game I've played that needs so much 3rd party programs/websites

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 05:59 PM PDT

Sure, they're "optional," but everyone uses poe.trade, trade macro gives you so much info on items that the game itself just doesn't give you from the getgo, path of building is such an amazing program for build planning and testing, half of the time I decide to play poe, I'm not killing monsters, but on the poe wiki trying to figure out explicit implicit suffiz affix crafting mods ilvl item base vendor npc skill gem on and on and on....

Sure the game is still fun, but sometimes I wonder if the game mechanics and functions could be more intuitive and a tiny bit more convenient.

Honestly wtf is going on. 300$ on a game which I enjoy and now all of a sudden its unplayable. Trace routes are fine. Even when the game lags. 80% of my maps are like this. Cant progress passed 92 because I cant play stable maps and I keep dying to BS rubber banding

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 11:49 AM PDT

    Is this vocal minority?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 02:20 AM PDT

I've been browsing reddit lately and all I see is a lot of whining about the decay, synthesis crafting, Synth bosses and Betrayal (I guess I can understand this, but havent had the lags myself).

Me, my buddies, my guild, haven't heard anyone complaining the way I see it on Reddit. Sure, the decay can screw you over from time to time, but that's what makes it interesting.

Sure, the bosses can be way harder to kill than the rest of the content and again, this is what makes me push my build to the limits.

Crafting, all it took was browsing a bit of Reddit while having The Poops to know how it works and how to be efficient doing it.

So many of these negative threads asking to be spoonfed. Make this easier, remove that, remove RNG bla bla bla. I started playing PoE in Beta because of the RnG. Knowing that you could potentially get the most expensive piece of gear from a random barrel or white mob. I've also seen myself burn out way faster in Leagues where everything is too easy. Being able to kill uber elder with each gear piece costing 10c and then figuring that you don't have any need for upgrades so why bother.

This is also why I couldn't stick with Diablo 3 for more than 2 weeks because I felt I had nothing left to achieve.

Now, Synthesis has been one of the most engaging and challenging leagues for me. Doing lvl 83 Cortex and failing, only to realise if I had 25% more DPS I would have succeeded so keep pushing. Crafting my own sexy implicit wands for less than 10c or making some juicy memory nodes to take some time off from mapping.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents. Peace!

PSA: Blight Threshold Jewel (Spreading Rot) does not apply wither twice as patch notes describe

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 08:59 PM PDT

The patch notes for 3.6.0 say:

Spreading Rot no longer causes enemies Hindered by Blight to take increased Chaos Damage, and instead now causes Blight to inflict Withered on enemies for 2 seconds per copy of Spreading Rot.

I just tested this in PVP, and using one versus two jewels with a friend who was streaming, and using two jewels does not stack Wither any faster. Both options reach 15 stacks in about the same amount of time. Sorry I don't have a video, but this is easily confirmable in game.

I have double checked that my spreading rot jewels have 40 intelligence in radius.

I and many others have been using 2x spreading rot all league, but....the primary benefit (faster wither) does not occur.

If you're wearing two, take one off and use a better jewel!

    Important Edit:

It looks like this may be a wording issue that many people, including myself, interpreted in the wrong, although valid way.

to inflict Withered on enemies for 2 seconds per copy of Spreading Rot.

I read any statement saying "do X per copy of Y" as "do that thing N times with N of Y". However, it looks like GGG coded this as "if ANY jewels, apply (0 second) wither, and also: add 2 duration per 1 jewel" instead of "apply (1 wither stack for 2 seconds) per jewel". I don't think this is made clear, but it does seem to be correct.

With this second interpretation that seems to be correct, it's not two withers applied per use going from 1-2 Spreading Rot, but rather 2 -> 4 second Wither duration. So getting to 15 stacks doesn't happen any faster, it just stays at 15 for 2 seconds longer before going away.

This is definitely not how I an this isnd most other people interpreted the jewel. If it is so, then it's not 'bugged' it just doesn't work the way we expected it too, and is far less worth using. The wording is vague.
