Most of negative PoE reviews in Steam are perfomance related

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 07:39 AM PDT

Seriously, maybe it's time to do something about it? Hope we can get some of improvements before 4.0 hits.

Just for reference, I'm using RX 570 8GB with some OC (1400\1800mhz), i7-870 4c/8t 2,8Ghz (tried to overclock it to 3,5Ghz, but it has no impact on perfomance in PoE, so I reverted it back to slight chilly downclock\undervolt), Dual-channel 1950mhz 8GB ram and an SSD for Windows and PoE. The results are: https://streamable.com/l39bs. As you can see, PoE drops to 20-30 fps quite often, making the gameplay kind of unresponsive - you can even tell it by framtime graphic. Considering The Blood Aqueduct isn't the most heavy area in the game, the situation becomes even worse. Before blaming game engine for that (but honestly I should be), the bottleneck here might be kind of slow memory, but other people with better configurations got a lot of problems too (remember that 2080ti dude).

The other thing is crashes, but I somehow managed to get rid of them using memory cleaner tools and increasing pagefile capacity. Oh, and also I tend to not use more than 1-2 tabs in chrome (which are kind of mandatory for PoE). But that is actually me using a bare minimum of 8GB ram.

I know that the perfomance issues related posts are quite often here, even before 3.6 and 3.5, but I honestly have no idea how good my PC should be to be able to play at minimum settings with low resolution at smooth 60 fps. Not even talking about 6-man parties, but still it sucks to have the online game unresponsive in actual online events. The most frustrating thing in this season for me is not the Synthesis mechanic (but that doesn't mean I'm happy with picking up bunch of fractured rares and then pricing them), but the perfomance issues. Therefore I can always enjoy other parts of the game if I don't like the new mechanics, but even these are less enjoying with given perfomance. Furthermore, it was really surprising to move from GTX650 1GB to RX570 and barely notice any improvements.

EDIT: I'm aware of my CPU being really old, and I'm actually going to upgrade it in the next 2 weeks for some 8c/16t chip, but it's still decent and is somewhat comparable to newer CPUs people are using (i.e. R5 1400, i3-8100, i5-6400/7400). Sure, the old architecture of course has its impact on perfomance, but the difference shouldn't be too much. In fact, it can handle all of the modern open-world games with much smoother framerate. You can google Intel Xeon x3440\x3450\x3460\i7-860 for reference, they are mostly the same CPU (https://youtu.be/CN_1tdAXa2o?t=26 - this is a good 720p test showcasing how good the cpu handles different game engines, excluding a gpu bottleneck. Also pay attention to the newest Watch Dogs 2 perfomance). For a clearer picture, I have another recording with CPU load graphs for all threads: https://streamable.com/bcd70. As you can see, in most scenes the cpu load of a single thread doesn't exceed 90%, so here my FPS is capped by my GPU. Furthermore, there are some threads hanging around with no job, means the actual multithreading in PoE isn't executed well. The thing is, PoE is not CPU intensive, stop calling it like that. It's single-core intensive at finest and poorly CPU-optimized at worst. Let me remind you, it's 2019 already, we even have DX12 now.

EDIT2: Okay, it's time for some BROSCIENCE. I did some research based on your thoughts and figured out that GPU is not the bottleneck here. My guess is it's all about how the game utilizes multiple CPU threads and its memory subsystem, while trying to parallel various tasks. I think dinosaur people like me that are using old CPUs might try to look into overclocking their north bridge and hypertransport frequencies (looking at you, AMD FX/Vishera users). That should help with stutters and 1/0,1% fps overall. I'm not a hardware expert, so think of it as a wild guess - I only have some basic knowledge. But if it's the case, that would possibly explain why some people get a better perfomance with disabled engine multithreading. This is more like a workaround at the end of a day, on the real side PoE's engine must learn how to work with threads more efficently. It's all about efficency in the end. Oh, and also don't forget about RAM frequencies, timings and number of channels. This is important too.

Make bosses harder, but dont make them ever be affected by stupid mods! I can handle grinding to ever spawn cortex, but after all that time having it ruined with 3x100% ele and onslaught is frustrating

I gave up on delve for same reason. 7k hp fortify champ with 4 mill dps couldnt handle overbuffed Kurgal. It just feels completely imbalanced.

Is this a normal thing? Uncorrupted 23% Quality Divine Ire gem, dropped from a normal gem reward node in Nexus.

[PSA] You can level 3 Extra Gems (9 Total) on your Offhand

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 12:31 PM PDT

This league introduced the new unique item "Maloney's Mechanism" which is a quiver that has 3 sockets on it. This allows you to use a 6 Socket Bow + Quiver to level up to 9 gems in total for passive income (vaaling them at lv 20 or after lv20 20 quality for a possible Lv21 corruption).

You can also check through poe.ninja for the most profitable gems to level and corrupt (excluding lv21 Vaal gems as those can only be obtained through double corruption).

All I wanted was a 5 minute quickie

    Posted: 07 Apr 2019 07:05 PM PDT

Got home at 12am, decided to run a map real quick before bed, I ended up going deep into the rabbit hole.

    1. Grabbed a map with no daily on it, alc and go.
    2. Map had Abyss on it with 4 cracks
    3. Got a 4way memory zone (completed it and put me at 10 memory limit)
    4. Wild Zana appears, I told her to wait a while cause my memory is full
    5. Popped over Nexus to use some memory tiles
    6. Did a short 3x memory tile run
    7. Jumped back to map with Zana waiting
    8. Enters Zana Mission with Abyss mission
    9. Map loaded with stutter, I found Alva Incursions instead of "oneshot green squad"
    10. Got a 3way memory zone (almost failed)
    11. Abyss spawned Abyssal Depth with a boss that dropped 1 socket tombfist
    12. Finally cleared Zana map

... and it is now 1am and I got to work tomorrow, thank you GGG

Edit: Was not expecting much from this post but it is nice to see many having gone through similar experiences. I love this game, been playing since beta, poured almost USD1k into GGG's coffer (gladly do it again). I just feel the game is drifting too far apart from what it strives too be and going too deep into the rabbit hole trying to be something I fear that I no longer recognize. I feel that I may be losing my love for the game that I have religiously played for so many years. A close friend that I have been with many years, growing up together, slowly becoming someone I no longer know and understand, I shed a tear... that is my nightmare. For now, I will carry on with the 3.6.3 changes and pray that my old friend will be back the next league...

Edit2: Thanks for the Reddit Silver. Let us all pray that GGG is working on some awesome remedy to improve the situation in 3.7

This is the third league in a row I am earning 120/120 achievements (which is REALLY annoying) and GGG needs to revisit Jun

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 04:17 AM PDT

During Delve, I decided to finish the last few achievements I had left to round out my "poe experience". I slogged through All Ears (failing twice) and no stone unturned. Got lucky with a 5 essence, etc. And I was done. It's one of my proudest gaming achievements (next to 100%ing Super Meat Boy).

Betrayal comes along and changes the masters. Lo and behold, while progressing through my usual 36/40 challenges, I notice that my achievement list had dropped from 120/120 to 119/120; obviously, the culprit was the new masters list and my lack of favor with them.

I was perturbed, but I powered through them, expect for Alva, which took me a week of research and dedicated T3 room hunting, and trade 820 spamming (there was a very little public information and the little helpful notification bubble hadn't been credited or expanded on yet). But I endured it, because now I would be done with 120/120 once and for all.

In comes Synthesis, which adds Jun to the list, and AGAIN, I'm back down to 119/120. Now, despite having already progressed fairly significantly through the league (34/40, 94 char, 93 char), my Jun is still at level 6 and I can't level her further. I've been trying for ten days now.

First, you have to find Jun. We already know how difficult this is. You get one daily, a slight random chance, and a possible prophecy. During a day of playing (like on a weekend), where I can put in 8-10 hours of play in one sitting, I'm lucky if I encounter Jun (by any of the aforementioned means) 8 or more times. Mind you, I'm also trying to complete my last two challenges, which force me to engage with the Nexus, not to mention all of the other mechanics that pull you in different directions lest you want to sacrifice the gains from any one of them (delving, alva temples, nexus, etc.).

Let's say I do encounter Jun, there's a chance I won't get all three encounters and only see two. That happens maybe 80% of the time.

The crux of leveling Jun is to defeat all masters when they are at rank 3. This is essentially an exercise in futility. First, you have to meet the same master multiple times. Additionally, when you meet them, you have to be given the option to rank them up.

Well, at some point in the last few patches, they must have tuned down the number of opportunities we get to rank up a master, because I get the option to "+1 to rank" maybe 30% of the time.

And if that's not enough RNG for you, syndicate progress is character bound. So, if you DO want to rank up all the masters to rank 3, you have to do it on one character (it may be possible to target different masters on different characters, but there's no confirmation).

I think I have 184 hours played in this league already, and I still have to kill three more masters at rank 3 and I don't see myself reaching that mark any time soon.

And I'm doing all of this to earn the same achievement I have earned twice before because GGG decides to retroactively undo all that work. This has been a terrible player experience.

    TL;DR

My third time completing the same achievement. Leveling Jun to rank 7 has been an exercise in futility. Still three masters away from ranking her up despite going hard all league.

    New player, feeling overwhelmed

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 10:11 AM PDT

So I just started playing this game, and I'm loving it so far (Sunder Jugg lots of fun). But feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the options like Incursions, the mine stuff which I havent really jumped into, prophecies, etc. I'm assuming these are all past league stuffs that are still in the game.

Should I ignore it for now with my first character? Anything I should focus on particularly? Just not sure. Too many (cool) options. :)

League Turnover Experience of a Slow Standard League Player

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 01:02 PM PDT

I'm a working man now with more and more responsibilities every year that goes by, so over the past few leagues I've had less and less time to grind out the economy game to equip a strong character that I enjoy playing: One that's good enough to tackle all the endgame systems I want to explore given my fairly poor reflexes (I can't play like mathil) and not the best internet connection(Winter Orb, Golementalist, BM Cyclone and RF builds are great for this as a side note).

I started playing standard heavily this league and I finally killed uber elder twice (never did it before). I'm at delve 229 looking forward to reaching the 250 depth where I will encounter the bosses for the first time. I'm maybe halfway to open a betrayal safehouse for the second time (the first one was in betrayal league).

The problem is that for maybe two leagues now there's this insanely tedious ritual I have to do when maps turnover into a new series. I have to declog my entire map tab by running the high tier maps, and maybe merging all the lower ones so they will fit back into the map tab of the new series. It's one of the reasons I held off on playing standard for awhile too, because sorting through that mess is a nightmare even an accounting encoder would find tedious (I spent 8 hours one weekend just sorting through everything so I could play standard with some degree of organization).

I've bought a few supporter packs over the years so aside from the map tab, I have 4 quad stash tabs, 20 premium regular ones, 1 divination tab, 1 fragment tab, 1 currency tab and 1 unique tab. In general I have the necessary space for converting the maps but I can imagine those with much less stash tabs have an even more difficult time.

My suggestion is just an equivalence conversion for each tier of regular map and the unique maps are converted to whatever else tier it changes to. Maybe there's a button you press or item you activate to convert to the new series if you don't want to delete prerolled maps stored in the tab.

It just feels like I lost all my map progress every time a new league rolls in, and I have to do this time consuming workaround to salvage the time I put in before to gather the maps I have.

Please don't misinterpret this as an entitled demand. I enjoy your game very much when I have free time or I'm feeling antisocial or I don't want to spend a lot of money going out. I understand your priorities are still to your league players who make up the majority of your player base. I know the devs read reddit and I am writing this letter so that maybe one of the devs will see this and it can be looked at your earliest convenience. For the rest of the community, i am posting so that maybe some people out there may read/learn about how some of the older players experience the game (I've been playing since beta. I'm just a really bad player getting better slowly and I like the game a lot. It took me a few leagues to start seriously mapping. I was just doing dried lake or nonmap zones a lot before.)

    Sincerely,

One of the many POE players

Then have I got the solution for you! Just play flicker strike! You'll be fine some times, and other times you'll warp directly into the middle of the blue shit since, for some reason, monsters can still be targeted when they're inside it.

Not a single boss in this game should be affected by mods.

    Posted: 07 Apr 2019 03:28 PM PDT

So, I just did my first Cortex fight of the league, went in blind, lvl 83 and 2x elemental damage mods and Onslaught. Not as terrifying as some of the mod combos I've seen around Reddit.

Ran out of portals when the last boss had like 10%hp left. The fight itself was beautiful, I really liked it but the ridiculous damage and speed of the boss ruined it for me, it felt more unfair than difficult. I had the same problem in Delve, my first Kurgal wiped the floor with my ass because of the ridiculous mod combination he had, and even the Shaper Guardians can get a bit out of hand depending on their mods.

On the other hand, bosses like Catarina, The Shaper, The Elder, The Elder Guardians and Uber Elder are totally unaffected by mods and the fights are really enjoyable. Those bosses are still dangerous and can kill you easily if you get hit by multiple attacks and that's totally fine. What is not fine is a boss wiping out 90% of your HP with one of their "small" attacks, specially one like The Cortex where you have to face 3 bosses in a row with 6 portals and only 1 flask refill phase (correct me if I'm wrong here).

Rebalance ALL the mod affected bosses and give them fixed damage, only scaling up with their level.

EDIT: Thanks for the Silver! Also some people here think that I'm asking GGG to make bosses trivial punchbags. No, I want bosses to be challenging, I want them to be hard, but with mods affecting them they sometimes are borderline impossible. I'll set an example here, imagine Slave Knight Gael from DS3, that fight was hard as hell and he wrecked my face countless times and I loved it. Now imagine him with 100% increased damage, 30% more attack and movement speed and 100% increased AoE. That's not hard, that's bullshit.
