Subreddit Updates: Adding Rule 10 and some notes

    Posted: 19 Sep 2019 10:39 AM PDT

Hey all! Blight League has definitely been an interesting time for r/pathofexile! On top of the usual controlled chaos that comes with every league launch, we've had new mods (hi), a new rule, and a lot of new discussions pop up. So while we're in the lull of the second week we wanted to keep everyone up to date on what's going on around the sub.

    Rule 10 Locking In

First up, we've got a new rule coming in! This is hopefully not news to the regulars here. We've been doing a trial of Rule 10 for a while now. It was largely inspired by Rule 5 of r/Stellaris, the mods of which have been very helpful! Thank you guys!!

    The new rule is:

    Item Showcases require explanation

Provide background information whenever you post a video or screenshot. Explain what you want users to look at in a comment. Your comment must be descriptive and explanatory - simply referencing the title is not enough, even if the title is adequately explanatory on its own.
This comment can include but is not limited to: crafting method, location of pickup, difficulties with the item, why it is rare/good, etc. This comment requirement is intended to promote discussion and as such should explain the reason why it is being posted.

For the last two weeks we've been enforcing this rule as-is under a trial period. We have had almost no complaints, even from the authors of posts we've had to remove due to this. Heck, we've even had some thank us (which, let me tell you, was a confusing surprise). So we've come to the conclusion that we can stamp a big 'approved' stamp on this new rule and lock it in. For many of you this will not change anything, same for anyone who's posted an item showcase in the last two weeks. As always, if any of you have any questions, concerns or suggestions for Rule 10 you can message us through modmail (the big button on the bottom of the sidebar).

    Rule 10 Execution

/u/riffautae assembled a bot for Rule 10, so technically now I need to formally introduce our newest moderator: Exilebot! This bot is our main line of enforcement for Rule 10. It's a rule that's somewhat straightforward to automate and we don't want to 'surprise' people by informing them their post breaks this rule 6 hours after it was posted.

Here is how it works: the bot looks at any post flaired as Item Showcase and confirms whether OP left a direct comment to their own post. If no comment is detected within a short grace period, ExileBot will warn the user about Rule 10. After ANOTHER grace period, if the user still has not made the comment, the bot will hide the thread and let them know how to get it approved. The bot will continue to check for the comment for several hours. If at any point the user posts their comment, ExileBot will reapprove the post, remove its own comment and it will be like nothing happened.

You might notice this leaves us with two major weaknesses: incorrect flairs and pointless comments to appease the rule without actually being helpful. If you see an Item Showcase that either has incorrect flair (e.g. Fluff) or a comment that really doesn't accomplish anything (e.g. "Yay! Look at my item!") be sure to report it, it really helps us out!

    Other Notes/Updates

    • We removed the automod's response to question posts. It will still autoflair question and question-answered as normal but after numerous requests the comment itself will no longer appear.
    • The popular topic of allowing/removing multi-mod item showcase posts is still something we need to discuss on our end. We mainly want to see how much Rule 10 affects this before throwing more arbitrary lines around. (So far, since the Rule 10 implementation, multi-mod item showcases have stuck to a little under 1 in every 10 item showcases.)
    • We had to remove the GGG subdomain filter on the sidebar (old reddit only) due to the automod parent submission selection not allowing a proper ccs class assignment. Which is a fancy way to say that GGG flair on reddit posts are only skin-deep. So stick with the GGG tracker or typing flair:GGG in the searchbar for now.
    • ExileBot Item Showcase message for those who haven't seen it and are curious (When no comment is detected):

Please post a new TOP LEVEL comment explaining your submission Your Item Showcase post does not appear to have a comment explaining it yet.

As per Rule 10 all item showcase submissions must have a top level comment describing the post.

This comment is just a warning. However, if you do not post your comment soon this thread will be temporarily hidden until you have done so. You have about two hours to post your comment. After that you will have to message the moderators to get your submission approved.

Do not reply to this comment. Only top level comments count.

This message was sent by a bot, this bot is still in the testing phase. If there are any issues please contact the moderators.

Constant clicking to pick up currency is genuinely giving me carpal tunnel

    Posted: 19 Sep 2019 09:01 AM PDT

Is there an actual good reason for why we can't just run over currency to automatically grab it? There's so few situations where you wouldn't want more, and even if that was the case for people who already well off, you could just add a toggle for currency auto-pickup in the UI options.

Having to put the cursor on currency items constantly (especially when there's a lot of it after a Blight/Breach/Legacy/Strongbox/whatever) actually starts to hurt my wrist after a few hours of mapping. The actual moving/killing isn't that straining, but the constant mousing over/clicking for currency is.

The excessive use of complex overlapping animated translucent materials is the root cause of FPS drops experienced during heavy action (example inside).

    Posted: 19 Sep 2019 08:24 AM PDT

PoE is very aggressive with its use of translucency. Sometimes there's so many effects on the screen that you can't even tell what's going on. The effects are also heavily animated, further increasing cost and complexity.

Most AAA engines have built-in tools for visualizing scene complexity to avoid performance problems related to translucency. You can see that even just layering three materials is enough to set off the engine warnings (it literally describes it as "extremely bad")

GGG has used transparency masks for some effects (noticeably certain auras), which are cheaper to render compared to translucency, but it isn't enough (masked transparency also looks worse, and limits artistic freedom).

MTX in particular use a lot of eye candy, but I guess they have to look flashy in order to sell well. Ground effects are also a pain, effectively covering the entire screen with animated translucency which then also combines with mob effects to create even more lag.

Lowering any of my graphics settings (including resolution) has virtually no impact on the performance drops, because none of these settings are removing the root cause. The game has no option to limit on-screen effects. All you can do is lower the resolution of the base textures used by the materials, which doesn't do anything for powerful GPU's except reduce VRAM utilization.

My GTX 1070 runs the game perfectly fine, until large packs of mobs start to fight with minions and all the bloated effects start to cover the screen. Blighted maps or 8 portal Blights will easily dip my frames into the 30's for a short duration.

    Posted: 19 Sep 2019 12:27 PM PDT

I'm not sure why the top threads every day are about server issues or people crying about league mechanics, honestly, GGG know about the problems and are working on fixes. When have they ever ignored a problem?

Personally I'm actually enjoying this league. I'd love it if we could go back build/item showcases and suggestions, rather than rants and petty complaining.

Blight, 3.8.1, Recent leagues, heavy pipelining to future xpacs, statements from GDC and the future of PoE with D4 competition

    Posted: 19 Sep 2019 03:04 AM PDT

After 3.8.1 was rolled out, I was trading a summoner with a full-on zoo that lagged the crap out of me in my ho. It was server side, the necro had the same stutters since the patch. It kind of struck a nerve in combination with other concerns and I wanted to air some of this out and see what other people think.

TL;DR What do you think about the small-league effort (such as Blight+its issues)? And do you think Blight is okay if that means we get a bigger expansion next (or two leagues over), or not? You'll see where I stand, I'm curious where you all stand on it.

So after 3.8,1, I'm still crashing in blight maps, and on certain tilesets the stutters are still really bad. I've CTD'd and lost maps many times in Blight. I don't know what you've done but my textures are loading all funny and slow since 3.8 as well. As for the rewards... they were simply doubled instead of fixed.

I'm making this post because I know it'll be yet another week before we see any real fixes after we cry some more and frankly I'm getting a bit annoyed with the last year of PoE.

    Blight

Blight in general is a really small league and that's fine with me. My issue is with the worsening quality on the technical level, it's becoming a burden. There is this insanely short cycle of three months that, through trial and error, is bringing you success now. Mostly due to pipelining bigger expansions which is more and more the case. That's amazing. You need those to bring in new players. But please find a way to make the off-leagues better and more playable. Less pipelining and more testing/fixing before and after its released. Or at least jump on it faster when content is borderline unplayable. You didn't design or create much of anything for Blight, so much so that you plugged the Synthesis bosses in as an easy job to try and make Blight more whole. Let me emphasize in the strongest possible terms that I don't care that you do this. I'll play PoE whenever, any time. But if you are going to make a half-baked league to pipeline a bigger xpac, at least make it good and stable. Kind of wondering how Delve was completely broken for everyone for the first couple of days of Blight as well. The point being, it's such a small league that still has so many problems. No oils from blight maps, somewhat bad rewards, no chase content, blighted maps too rare, and my own personal biggest issue: yet again no proper tooltip information on league mechanics. Then the core part of the league is massively unstable and crashing lots of players.

It's like you ship a league regardless of its state nowadays, having already planned to do some fixes for the stuff you knew was broken, but with yet too little dev work hours so that they come out two weeks later. Increasingly so this is the case. With only 4 updates to your game a year I feel it has to be getting better, not worse.

    Recent leagues and issues

I couldn't progress Delve for two weeks (the niko starting quest bug, which stopped many players from delving completely, and the cart interaction massacre that was improperly patched, and then re-occured in Synthesis as well for a whole week).

And then in Synthesis (Boss tiles that spawned unreachable that was finally patched 2.5 wks later without a retroactive fix) and now this patch which has huge instability and lack of depth. Its getting worse every league because of your obsession with new content and new players. This league is yet another (big) step up in terms of instability from the last couple.

Betrayal had massive, lasting FPS and stutter problems for weeks, even months. I did not have these on my SSD machine, but I care about how slowly they were tackled. People were massively affected in every map.

Months and months of posts about the building tediousness of PoE's content. We get a half-baked solution that relies on tediousness (putting maps in your masters). It's just like how on standard they add one half-solution every two leagues and you still can't properly use stash tabs there.

Then there was that duplicate MTX shuffle that was pulled instantly the other week. The point is, PoE is shifting considerably.

GDC quotes + Game balance VS $

The second main reason I wanted to post this is because I watched Chris' talk at GDC. And even though I was expecting a purely commercial PoV, I have some things to share about that which are directly related to my personal concerns with PoE. I'm curious what others think as well. It was kind of eye opening as a true and loyal fan of this game (and supporter). The talk was brutally honest about business their model, failures, and learning points for GGG in their growth over the years. Particularly, the"why would we spend 20% dev resources on something that affects 10% of players"- attitude lately (quoted from the talk) that's rather apparent. I care about that statement a lot. It's too tailored to acquiring new players and the game is stacking up lasting issues and lack of QoL to prove it.

EDIT1 : I completely forgot to add a point which is the lack of balance because of $. Chris literally said in his talk that bringing players back is hugely amplified by re-balanced/renewed skills and archetype reworks. This makes a lot of sense. But then you think about balance and where it ties in. At this point you have to be okay with a huge lack of balance going forward because clearly this model is very good for business. Make shit OP, release your best MTX series for it. Balance, for me, is officially off the table for the future of PoE. It's about freshness and money. More powerful builds, players, items, and item affixes makes them more money (also said at talk).

    Diablo 4 competition

I can't wait for D4 announcements. Some competition will be good for PoE. Blizzard has some serious catching- and making up to do so you know they are going to give it everything. They certainly need it to be huge $ wise. But hey, until then, looks like we'll keep pumping insane amounts of dev time into 4.0 which will get a release date when D4 gets one... So 3.9, 3.10, 3.11 and 3.12 (and maybe more) might be equally boring because 4.0 is going to be (possibly forever) the most important patch in PoE history with the power of D4 looming over its head. If 4.0 isn't a huge hit, we can at least jump over to D4.

    Closing thoughts

I'm just saying that I hope Blight league isn't a sign of the next 4 patches to come. Most streamers are already playing other games again. HC is at an all-time low because of stability and randomness that doesn't get addressed. Yeah I get it, they need to work on bigger patches and expansions for us. But even during the talk Chris went over such brutally honest learning points for GGG that I feel like if nobody mentions that we care about these "off-leagues" it's not going to see any change, like many other things didn't in the past. Somewhere along the line we've forgotten that PoE has a huge competitive laddering angle that needs stability. Taking time off/making the time to race/be among the first only to be held back for 1-2 weeks with game breaking issues league after league is taking its toll for me. So if anyone read all of this and you don't agree with anything that's fair, consider it me posting my 2 cents.

So.. are we not "complaining" enough? Does GGG think that most of us think these small (tiny) leagues, the fix timetables, and the tediousness is okay? Or am I in the minority?

EDIT2: Formatting. Since you know, it turned into a wall of text. I'm really, really curious what people think when it comes to the small patch VS big patch stuff.

With the game being faster and faster, Tormented spirits need 3 changes. 1) Immortal/Insane HP 2)Bigger tormenting aoe 3) Runs to the nearest Rare then cast a tormenting explosion that goes 2 screen wide

    Posted: 19 Sep 2019 06:40 AM PDT

Nowadays tormented spirits feel useless because they die even before we see them on screen, which is why i think they should be immortal or near it

Bigger aoe to catch more monsters on their path making chasing them more rewarding but also harder

And the most important... going to the "nearest" rare!(or unique) to posses it, stopping the boring "tormented spirit is dumb and always end up kissing walls"

    2019 Performance

    Posted: 19 Sep 2019 05:04 AM PDT

To preface, i have a fairly less than ideal PC.i7-4700HQ CPU @ 2.40GHzNvidia GeForce GTX 880M16GB RAMAnd a basic 250GB SSDMy Poe Account https://www.pathofexile.com/account/view-profile/zboard/characters"BoysLads" - Necro

However throughout the past years this has proved more than enough to play the game at an enjoyable enough quality on low game settings. It would still, falter in crazy moments, such as a "Allies cannot die" packs, huge packs and other crazy things... But honestly it never felt too bad.

However this league has been a real spanner in the works for me. Let me quickly just say that i currently have a level 96 zombie Necromancer, have 100% completed the atlas, and even completed several week 1 deathless uber elders. So i have experienced a huge amount of play time and enjoyment from the league as a whole. But i feel that if i wasn't playing a summoner i wouldn't be enjoying myself at all. From start to finish i do every map at about 40fps, with constant drops to 15-25 in big packs. "Allies Cannot Die" packs simply freeze my PC, and let's not get too upset about the Blight mechanic, but jesus christ.. Now i enjoy the league mechanic, i really do. It has some problems but i'm sure everyone is well aware of them and there is already multiple threads talking about those, so we will ignore that part. But my framerate during these... good god damn am i glad i am playing a summoner... Thankfully my build is pretty nuts. I can start a blight, go and make a cup of tea and come back to loot, and i do. But the performance is so bad that i could barely play even if i wanted to. Blight maps are that on crack, especially t15's annointed with pack size. I just start it, build a few slow towers and stand afk in the center for 5 minute because i have a constant 20fps, dropping down to about 11 in some cases...

Id like to double down and say that i have super enjoyed the league, i really have. but it has come to the point for me where i wanted to make a 2nd character, and it's a cyclone berzerker stacking all those juicy ramp mechanics like rage and rampage etc... But i'm only on Act 9 of the story and the performance is making this incredibly difficult for me to enjoy on a character such as this. On the summoner it didn't matter so much, leap slam near the enemies and you're good. But on the berzerker i have a lot to do, and a lot of actions that have solid feedback to me as the player, but that feedback is channeled through a game running at 25-40fps... I don't know if i can bare this, i might just have to go back and play on my summoner for the rest of the league, but that will drastically reduce my total playtime this league as there is only so much you can do on one character and still enjoy it.

Now like many PoE players on reddit, i'm fairly PC savvy... more so than the average person at least, and enough to look after my own stuff. But there isn't much more i can do to squeeze performance out of the game on my PC anymore. And i know... buy a better PC, and i'd like to but it's not possible right now, and even just last year PoE ran perfectly fine, only chundering on the crazy stuff. But with the constant addition of content and mechanics, alongside the powercreep making faster, more devastating builds the norm, performance is taking a big hit.

    ------

I would like to open this thread up as more of a formal discussion than a place to complain, but i would really appreciate a league in the future where the core is so simple and easy to produce, that they can spend all of their time focusing on optimizing and cleaning out this wonderful game, that over the years has gained scars on-top of scars from the copious amount of content that get's added every year.

Thank you for your time Exiles.

-Edit: I just did some extra snooping around and discovered that the new beta steam which i recently switched over to is a huge culprit in the performance for me this league, turning the beta off actually improves fps by an incredible margin.
