I really hope that POE2 brings back the fun of party playing

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 11:42 AM PST

Early days of Poe was fun to play in party but it's now a nightmare if your party members build aren't perfectly tailored to play together

    Things that killed party play:

    • clearspeed speed: the game being faster makes the speed gap between build have a much more bigger impact and noticable

    • visual performances: with all those triggers and increase of cast/attack per seconds, You cannot see shit when playing alone, multiple players is dumb

    • graphic performances: with all those triggers and increase of cast/attack per seconds, insane quantity of monsters and bosses with big skills, the game can barely handle a single player... so multiple ones is dumb

    • content mechanics: many content mechanic only focus on the map creator therefor penalize party members

I really wish to be able to play POE in party again, it was a fun dynamic

High FPS Stability vs. High FPS Availability

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 02:21 AM PST

So, I got too much coffee and now I want to discuss how PoE's performance is actually limiting hardware. This will be a lengthy post for hardware geeks but I hope to shed a different light on a complaint that is reoccuring. Keep in mind that everything I say might be objectively true but in the end it is still literally in the "eye of the beholder".

TL;DR: Virtually every relevant gameplay scenario in this game drops your fps regardless of your rig which is especially bad on VA monitors.

    Introduction
I recently updated my whole gaming setup to a 2019/2020 standard: Ryzen 5 3600, RX 5700xt (don't do this, it was the last AMD GPU I will ever buy), 16 GB ram and an ultrawide VA monitor. The affordable ultrawides are all VAs. I got the newest AOC model: cu34g2, 100hz, since I am a graphics whore I wouldn't ever hit stable 144fps on the games I play to maximize the 144Hz on the X model anyways + I am mostly into rpgs which are gorgeous on a stable 60-75 fps, or with freesync respectively. Stability will be the main point of discussion.
Furthermore, I believe that VAs aren't capable of fully performing on 144Hz due to their hardware limitations. Buying monitors really was an exercise in comprimising and made me realise that CRT monitors were better than anything we have nowadays.

Back to the topic. Naively, I believed that jumping 10 years in hardware (had a phenom II x6 and a GTX 970 prior) would drastically increase my PoE performance. This delusion was quickly annihilated by me opening my first monolith on my new setup. While I could limit my fps to 100 successfully in my hideout, which was something my old setup could never do, I would regularly jump between 50 to 80 fps when anything in a map happened, be it corpse explosions, conquerors spawning their ads, beyond, a larger pack of mobs, strongboxes... So I went troubleshooting.
At first I lowered all my graphics settings to (Default). Surprisingly, the game didn't change much visually but it performed a bit better.
I realised lockstep can hiccup your fps (even though I am low 23ms) so I went predictive. This helped with microstutters but not with the big drops. Then I realized SSD reading times can affect fps on things that need reading (duh), so I bought an nvme with about 3000mb/s reading speed. Opened another monolith, only to drop to 40fps again.
This is the point where I caved and realised, there is nothing I can further do on my side of the equation.

Why is FPS stability more important than high FPS?
Surely, one could argue that it's not that bad if your frames are 120+ and drop to 60 just to climb back up. In a hectic game like PoE that frame stutter would be mostly unnoticeable anyways. That might be true but here is where VA monitors come into play.
By nature, VAs have really deep contrasts, no backlight bleeding and really clean whites and blacks, all in all they make for a beautiful picture and PoE looks absolutely gorgeous and immersive on them. Sadly, isometric ARPGs are the bane of their existence because they load them with all their weaknesses: rapidly moving pictures and displaying high contrast texts on rapidly moving pictures, i.e. loot on the ground. Smearing and ghosting happens, especially with the black bars behind any text like "Chest" or NPC names. Luckily, VAs have some techniques to combat their weakness: Pixel Overdrive and motion blur reduction tech (MBR) by backlight strobing.
While Overdrive helps a ton with keeping things as sharp as possible while we cruise with Mach 3 through the world of Wraeclast, the real carry is the MBR technology. What it does is it switches the monitor's backlight on and off in sync with its refresh rate, which is unnoticeable to the eye but it cleans a moving picture off motion blur as much as possible. Not TN-levels by any means but it makes the difference between a blurry white mess and a readable text on a moving picture.
Some may have realised the problem by now but for MBR to fully function it needs a reliable FPS = Hz > 75Hz. FPS beyond the refresh rate can be kept in check with enhanced sync but fps below the refresh rate will lead to a particularly nasty stutter induced by the MBR technology. This stutter is noticeable because the contrast to when MBR performs optimally is just that big.

Just lower your refresh rate you blabbering addict!
This is not always possible. Monitors have different preset refresh rates for different resolutions to deliver a healthy picture. Healthy in the sense that manually adjusting the refresh rate (with programs like CRU) will lead to a very nasty and probably eye-damaging flicker. On 34" ultrawide Samsung panels with 1440p the jumps are 60hz, 100hz, 120hz and 144hz. As mentioned, mine caps out at 100hz. The sad part with MBR is, the tech needs refresh rate of 75 and higher to kick in. I could change the resolution and set it 75 Hz, but this introduces a new problem: Native 1440p monitors create a little perma-blur when going below their maximum resolution, in the sense that sharpness is diminished. Indeed, a 1440p monitor will display a less sharp 1080p than a 1080p monitor.
Finally, the game has little to no prospect to deliver a stable 75 fps anyways as the drops I experience go below the 50 mark on a regular. Not to mention party play of any sort.

    So what's the verdict?
To combat the aforementioned as much as possible on bigger VA-panel ultrawides one is left with playing the game in windowed mode and a custom resolution to make the stuttering that will happen either way as bearable as possible. The advantages of having an ultrawide in poe vastly outrank the caveats! Sadly, there are no ultrawide TN panels. One would have to opt for a dual monitor setup and then suffer from the poorer picture-quality of TNs, or maybe not - depends on who you are. If you want to immediately experience the powers of ultrawide, make your game windowed and then take away some height while keeping the width. If you have a 32" monitor you could play the game that way and still have a big enough screen. The difference in camera zoom and visibility is literally a pay-to-win game changer. Lastly, IPS panels have less to no smearing and ghosting but they also suffer from the motion blur of fast moving screen-scrolling games and they use the same mbr technology so I didn't go too much into them. They are double the price of VA panels and have their own pros and cons like backlight bleeding and weaker contrasts. The moving picture Kings are TN panels which is why Shooter-Pros use those.

One can only hope that PoE 2 will have the problem of fps stability addressed - either transitioning to Vulkan or by slowering the game down, maybe both. Furthermore, a change of game development that focuses on lesser number of things but more impact would be appreciated. Instead of cluttering the game with 9000 conqueror mobs having less but stronger champion mob packs spawn could combat the fps issues. I would prefer if the game was constructed in a way where hitting 120fps was close to impossible without heavy investment but it would virtually never drop below let's say 80-100 fps on powerful machines. The issue of smooth gameplay and visual joy is not something that only affects ultrawides by any means but a larger screen does amplify the existing problems of the game to a very noticeable degree. I hope I could shed some "eye opening" insight on that topic. That is all and thank you very much for reading my coffeinated ranting!

Is it just me or does Niko change his dialogue lines after you reach a depth of about 350, becoming more mad?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 08:46 AM PST

Kinda spooked me when he said "bye bye exile!" in a very high pitch tone, and then laughed hysterically next time, and got some other semi aggressive lines. I really hope he will say something new when I reach even deeper.

Was the balista archetype a failure?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 09:02 PM PST

Unlike regular totems that can be summoned at range, balista are summoned on your character. Like all totems they die very easily and unlike minions there are not many ways to scale their health and defenses. Last time i check poeninja, they are not very popular despite being the newly introduced mechanic in 3.9.

I didn't play much with it personally. If you have experience with them, is it good, bad, mediocre?

Advice for crafting recover % life when you block

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 02:29 PM PST

Hey! I'm playing a max block gladiator and want to try crafting a shaper shield with the mod above. What's the best way to do that? I'd prefer an answer from a league start SSF perspective, ie, the best way to both get the shaper shield and craft it without buying the base etc.

I'm totally new to crafting of any kind but I am well versed in non-crafting game mechanics. Thanks for the help!

Group for master mission rotas or favour farming

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 10:21 AM PST

Are you looking for an active and dedicated group to farm atlas missions? Consider joining our group (300+ members). We are looking to setup groups in various timezones (specially, a window from this post time to a couple hours later. We already have a EU morning/early-afternoon group that runs daily).

The concept is pretty simple :

    • We save 10 missions each per person (master and tier does not matter, but Niko/Einhar pref)
    • Once we have enough people to make a party we start the run. A 60mission run (10 missions each, 6people) takes about one hour.
    • We go as fast as possible by just doing the missions and skipping the rest of the map.
    • 500k-600k favour per hour
    • We also have a channel for Niko and Einhar rotas.

Map tier doesn't matter very much as favor doesn't scale very well, the higher is the better but white maps work perfectly too

We have an active community and a core group of favour farmers that do rotas often. The more we are the more we can make groups easily for various timezones, so don't hesitate to get the word out! :)

TheoryCraft Search/Filter Enabled - estimate the odds of rolling any combination of mods by simulating thousands of rolls and filtering for what you need.

    A demonstration in screenshots

TheoryCraft download and version notes here

    And one more fun fact:

    • Wands (except Convoking) automatically have the caster weapon penalty to rolling attack mods due to their implicits. Implicits modifying the rolls of the items they're on is also the mechanic that lets Convoking Wands roll minion mods in the first place.

    Incursion doesn't work in parties

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 01:03 AM PST

...and it's been a long time. Sometimes people can't left an incursion via portal and have to wait until the timer goes off. It doesn't happen with every incursion, but often enough to move Alva out of your map device room and never touch her again. I recall some guy said that it has to do something with instant movement skills (and it makes sense because this is when the issue started to popup iirc), but I can't be sure.

I hope that this issue will be taken into consideration for potential "Incursion Overhaul". And as we're speaking, here are my another 2cents: there should be an opportunity to skip Alva's dialog and get to the action immediately, or enter button should send you into an incursion directly. I believe experienced players would navigate easily by pressing D inside. You could also make actual icons for every architect, so you don't need to hover over circles.

How do I get more defense into this build ?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 11:20 AM PST

I am planning to play a Bane occultist as my league starter but I would like to take it to the endgame. I like to play tanky character and I am concerned about defense here.

    Current defensive layers are :

    ~10k ES

    Arctic armor

    Flesh and stone (sand mode)

lvl 25 enfeeble and temporal chains

    Spiderwebs

malediction (10% reduced dmg for ennemy)

Here is the PoB : https://pastebin.com/m228Baqd

    Budget is not an issue.

What defense could I add ?

Is there no indicator to check if you've already beaten the boss in a map?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 02:55 AM PST

So for example you're running a map, an open area with no arena, let's say Mud Geyser.

And you've completed it once before but totally forgot about it already but you're running it again because it was the best Zana mission available.

How can you check if you've already beaten the boss outside of making sure that there are 0 monsters remaining?

[Suggestion] Make ascendancy selections available before completing labs

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 02:23 PM PST

Was reading another thread in this sub from a new player and it got me thinking. It seems very difficult for people who are new or are just slow levellers to have an understanding of the different ascendancies and their effects. I don't see the harm in being able to expand this out from the start to allow all types of players to start planning.
