Friendly GGG reminder to Update Death's Aura to current dps requirements of Modern POE

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 07:09 AM PDT

Or at least give it more scaling options

Death's aura's last update has been in 3.6, 2 years ago

In general, POE's new content require more dps output to generate similar speed results than normal and previous league content. 3.6 being 7 patches ago, Death's aura damage is leagues behind what is considered viable nowadays

It can barely do decent against Map monsters, but forget about it against league monsters

At this point just change its name to "Tingler's Aura"

From a developer: why PoE struggles on many things

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 03:03 AM PDT

    Hello, PoE Reddit.

I'm not from GGG, but I am a lead developer in other company that involved in people hiring. I love PoE and struggle a lot on many things as well as you are. Reading a lot of criticism here, there are often a question: WHY devs can't fix/do this or this? I want to share why with you, as it is pretty obvious to me.

They are located in New Zealand! And hiring only there. Until they will make a new China/European/USA office, they will struggle with developers a LOT. According to Wiki, there are only 5,000,000 people there and in Auckland it is only 1,500,000 people. I can't express how hard it is to hire a GOOD C++ developer that will work with a custom game engine in so low population. I guess they pretty much hired everybody they could on these islands. So until they will grow outside New Zealand, we will struggle with optimization, website down during update, bugs, and no time for qol features.

Working in a multi office structure, especially in a multi timezone is a struggle as well, but it is not that bad as hiring people in such conditions.

Just wanted to share my opinion on their issues. GL to GGG to grow and evolve!

Harvest scams, using randomise instead of remove/aug, can ruin your items

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 01:50 PM PDT

GGG, how about enabling Ancient Reliquary Key drops during the next league to spice things up? It's been years since we last got one for a league.

[Suggestion] Delete the Heist level up requirements and quest chains. Have them already max level, delete the items, have pre-existing items maybe you can have 3 options for each slot

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 09:17 AM PDT

Heist is decent, but to have to level them every league and do the quests, it's beyond boring and exhausting. The game already has a bit too many elements.

if I get a Blueprint, as a new player, I cannot do it. First I need to do the quests, then do normal contracts, then level up, then if the Blueprint requires level 5 I am fucked.

Heist is rewarding and decent, but I bet the majority of players haven't even touched it this league because of the entry requirements.

For clusters sake, I honestly wouldn't mind if ritual didn't go core

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 05:01 PM PDT

Normally I say more is better, but even I can admit maps are quickly getting "full" - especially, for ritual, how much you need to slow down for often small rewards; as well as it being quite similar to cardio. Is there ever was something that wasn't going to go core I think it should be this

What's your strategy for league start?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 05:33 AM PDT

I'm curios how to "regular" players prepare for a new league (not talking about the streamers or players that farm mirrors each league)?

I'm asking more to see what I can do as a casual player. If I have to follow 10 spreadsheets or spend more time flipping or alt-tabbing than that's not really a fun experience, is it?

    Here's what I do:

    1. Try to find a league starter. Has to be something I can easily get into mapping but allow me to scale it over the entire league. I don't play multiple builds in a league
    2. I try to find something to farm that would allow me to generate currency. Preferably something I didn't farm before. This league was Shapers, Elders and UE. Think I did over 100 of each.
    3. Find something that I can learn how to craft. In Ritual, I focused on DoT gloves and Wands. I would invest like 5-8ex in crafts and sell for 10-12ex (would take 1-2 days to sell each item. I probably do 2-3 items / week)
    4. Focus on understanding one of the meta builds so I can craft something that's in high demand. Read, cluster jewels
    5. Finding a good place on the forums to talk about my build and keep improving and min/maxing while I play.

For the next league I'm thinking that maybe I should look into prophecy farming. But might be a bit too boring.

    What do you guys do?

    The Flooded Depths

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 11:42 AM PDT

I wrote a script to find maps lost in the Map tab (works for SSF)

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 07:13 PM PDT

    EDIT 2/DISCLAIMER:

I realized I should draw attention to the amount of data a tool like this is downloading, for people not familiar with the Stash Tab API. Due to the way GGG's API works, there is no way for a tool like this to work without downloading approximately 2 MB of data per second. This is peanuts for a big indexer like the trade site or poe.ninja, but if you don't have unlimited data this is a very real number. You may want to just run it periodically to do a big rescan of your map tab, which is described at the end of this post.

This was pretty quick and dirty, so I haven't bothered to go through the effort to set up a git repository or anything fancy. I wrote this for myself and figured I'd share it. The Python code is available here:

    https://pastebin.com/mDXe7eNX

If you're on a trade league, you can use the trick where you search for your own maps on the official trade site. That doesn't work for SSF, but public tabs are indexed in SSF leagues, you just need to get it from the API yourself.

To use this, you'll need Python 3 installed. Assuming you've saved this code as "findmaps.py", open a terminal and start it with the desired parameters, for example:

    python findmaps.py -ed FrostshockFTW 1110790635-1117999553-1078376823-1208654954-1159377728

Running it with -h will print out the help documentation instead. The flags you can specify are -e for Elder influenced maps, -s for Shaper influenced maps (excluding the T16 guardian maps), -d for Delirium orbed maps, and -n for maps with any sort of enchantment at all including Delirium. So in the example above, it will look for Elder and Delirium maps while ignoring maps I've enchanted via Harvest.

Other than the flags, the first parameter is your account name and the second should be a fresh change ID copied from https://poe.ninja/stats

Once it's running, it will print out maps in public Map tabs published on the Stash Tab API for your account starting from the given change. Even stash tabs from SSF leagues are published, as long as they're marked public. The way the API works is that when you make changes to a public tab, the entire tab is republished on the API. For regular tabs this is everything in view, but it seems that the Map tab is broken up into many chunks. You don't need to worry about this except for one scenario noted below.

The only requirement is to right click your Map tab and mark it as public. If you leave the script running, it will find maps as you put them into the tab (after API delay). Note that if you want to scan your entire Map tab for maps you may have lost in there weeks ago, this won't cut it because of the chunks. To get the entire contents of your Map tab republished, you can either change its name, or toggle it from public to private and back again. I'm not sure if there is a threshold on the latter before an update will be published - I found that leaving it private for a few seconds was enough.

Hopefully GGG gives us proper search functionality for the Map tab at some point, but in the meantime this has allowed me to recover many Delirium maps that dropped in Lex Ejoris and promptly got lost.

EDIT: I forgot one important part! As I said, this was pretty quick and dirty. To stop watching for Map tab updates, Ctrl-C or close the terminal window 🙃

Example of bad optimization that most likely affects your game performance. Earthquake's aftershock consumes 15-20% usage of my GTX 1070 gpu on an empty screen. Add 40 enemies, a bunch of light effects and spells and you have a low fps disaster like in Valdo's Rest

So i read several times that you need to roll elevated mysterious barrels with worms on a watchstone to make it as efficient as possible. but why is that so? is it just because there are more monsters to kill, or is there another reason for that? And does it HAVE to be elevated barrels?

also, speaking of sextant modifiers, which ones are the best to roll? i currently use elevated breach, awakened alva, awakened nemesis currency and awakened harbinger. i plan to reroll the alva one for worm barrels as soon as i understand why, but are there other modifiers that are worth getting?

    every help is appreciated :)

Path of Exile: Ultimatum - a theory on The Vaal, Doryani and a choice-based crafting league!

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 07:12 AM PDT

Edit: PoE's Twitter account has reacted...👀

    Intro

Hello - I like to theory craft upcoming Path of Exile leagues (Expedition League & Fairy Tale League) whenever there are teasers; I'm not expecting to be 100% right with these, it's just a bit of fun and gives me an excuse to delve deep into Path of Exile lore/mechanics! The teaser for 3.14 is VERY cool - and has a wealth of information for those who look close enough to the footage GGG decided to show off. Here's my take on the lore/mechanics on how Path of Exile: Ultimatum will work!

    The Premise/Origins

This is definitely a Vaal themed league, that's for certain. The red colours, hieroglyphics, pyramid/temples, spoopy red floaty goop: it's all there. First let's take a look at some of the most prominent figures of Vaal society, who will be pertinent in understanding the premise of this league:

    • Zerphi the Murderer: A Vaalish noble who lived to the impressive age of 168 years; triple the average life expectancy. He was a famous serial killer: over 128 years, he abducted, mutilated, tortured and killed 13 victims (all 20-year-old Gemlings nobles). On autopsies, it was stated that each victim must've experienced the most agonising pain known to man before they were ceremoniously executed. Mysteriously, however, Zerphi was found dead: laid next to his 13th victim, who was unmutilated. His own autopsy revealed that while he was 168 years of age, his body was no older than that of a 20-year old.

    • Queen Atziri: The last Queen of the Vaal, before their mysterious demise. She was obsessed with her own vanity, wanting nothing more than to enhance her own beauty and show it off to all who could see; t's said she would conduct her court in complete nudity for everyone to witness. However, she was well aware of her inevitable enemy: time. That's where Zerphi comes in: once she learned of this impressive feat of extending one's youth, she set forth to attain this power at any cost.

    • Doryani the Queen's Thaumaturge: Doryani was an exceptional being in his own right - demonstrating a great understanding of thaumaturgy and what we would know as Virtue Gems. He was ordered by Queen Atziri "to make any effort within the realms of possibility, and to act without fear of question or consequence", in order to discover how Zerphi extended his life and youth, for her own benefit. Doryani would command untold numbers of sacrifices for this endeavour: trying different methods of torture, sacrifices, and combinations of virtue gem implantations.

At some point during this, Doryani found out about The Beast - the true source of the power of virtue gems. Personally, I believe that at this moment, Doryani started to work on his own goals, rather than that of his queen's, in an effort to gain/attain more power for himself:

    • Doryani's Delusion: "I would rather see the end of the Vaal than help it tread water."

    • Doryani's Catalyst: "The result of the catalytic reaction would be either immortality for all, or death for all. It was a risk Doryani was willing to take."

It was at this ultimate "communion" where the end of the Vaal civilisation took place: the Great Cataclysm - resulting in millions of Vaal people, Queen Atziri and Doryani disappearing from existence; believed dead.

So who's the guy in the trailer?

I think the figure depicted in the trailer is indeed Doryani - Master Thaumaturge to the eternally beautiful Queen Atziri.

But Doryani is dead - so how can it be him?

This is where some speculation comes in. So we know that the Vaal were all but destroyed during this cataclysm event: most were blinked out of existence, some in close proximity went mad e.g. Vaal Fallen, and those far enough away (3126 of them) went to the Azmeri and assimilated into their culture.

Now those who "blinked" out of existence were thought to be dead for all intents and purposes, but I don't think dead is the right term. I believe they were transported to The Beast's Nightmare Realm:

    • When Siosa translates the golden pages in the quest at the Library, he reads about the cataclysmic communion that ended the Vaal. He mentioned "I can make out the words sleep, nightmare and... "the Beast, whatever that may be."

    • This is further supported by the unique "Dream Fragments", whose flavour text reads: "Doryani stumbled into a realm of madness, And awoke its Master."

    • So Doryani awoke The Beast during his communion, and The Beast responded by essentially gobbling up most of the Vaal.

Another key event is the "Sacrifice of the Vaal" Path of Exile expansion. Now remember, this league occurred BEFORE Act 9 existed - and so us killing The Beast hasn't happened canonically yet; The Beast was very much alive during this expansion:

    • The story text for the expansion reads: "Atziri herself still lingers in a nightmare realm that is starting to leak back into the land of Wraeclast." - another mention of Nightmare realm, which is The Beast's realm.

    • So we "killed" Queen Atziri during this expansion, who was sacrificing her subjects that also got taken by The Beast to keep herself "alive". With her dead, Doryani now has unfettered access to these sacrifices, now letting him work on his own goals unrestricted.

    • Whether he still has his own mind, or is another lacky of The Beast (like Malachai) remains uncertain. Either way, once we killed The Beast in Act 9, that surely had an effect on Doryani, either releasing him, or maybe he's determined to resurrect The Beast once again..

There's so much more information to be gleaned in regards to this theory. If you want to dive in, I implore you to surf the PoE.Wiki, Read lore text in-game, check out the big Lore Document by /u/justathetan and check out Kitten Cat Noodle's Youtube channel for some awesome lore videos!

So how does the Ultimatum League Mechanic work?

OK let's get down to the nitty-gritty! Here's the definition of "Ultimatum":

"The definition of an ultimatum is a demand which, if not met, will end a relationship or otherwise result in some serious consequence. When a woman says to her boyfriend "marry me or I am leaving you," this is an example of an ultimatum."

So in gameplay terms, this could exist as a more rudimentary choice, but the choices can have consequences!

If we take another look at Doryani in the trailer, he displays quite a nice symbolic stance of holding forth two choices (Blue pill / Red pill anyone?). Running with this, let's take a look at what this could look like:

    • You'll find Doryani once per area/map - I don't believe it'll be multiple due to being too similar to Ritual League.

    • He'll present you with a random item. In the trailer we can see evidence of a Currency, Gem and Weapon atop the Alter; you can drop these on the floor and compare the models to confirm.

    • Once you've viewed the item, you'll be presented with a choice on how you'd like to modify it. Here's a mockup of how this may look. With the teaser tweet stating: "Will you risk it all", we can surmise that this choice can involve some risk: either to the item itself, or the encounter being dangerous.

    • After you've made your choice, the encounter will begin; its difficulty being based on the choice you made.

Speaking of the encounters, there are some interesting things to learn from the trailer:

    • The alter pulses out an AoE which summons specific enemies, which I believe is based on the hieroglyphs on the floor. These also match up with more of Alva's Temple UI which shows different sacrifice subjects being tested in different combinations.

    • There are also additional dangers: one alter has bladed roombas which fly across the arena. Another has red circles which react when touched (see the edge now has symbols when the player runs across it)

    • It's unknown if these additional mechanics are chosen by the player in relation to the choice, are unique per alter regardless of the choice, or maybe challenge the player to fulfil challenges such as "don't step in the circles" or " Don't get hit by the roombas" as additional consequences; fail and the item goes poof?

    • As a last point, it appears as if Doryani channels some power from himself into the item atop the alter, on the Desert map. This could relate to him modifying the item based on choosing the "red" option.

    Some other additional/alternate theories:

    • It would appear from what we can see in the trailer, that the arena circle does not function similar to Ritual, in that it blocks you in. You can clearly see past the arena, and it's not covered in shadow.

    • There's a good chance that we face some ultimate boss, since we didn't during Ritual. Whether this is Doryani himself, or something else, remains to be seen. Clearly, Doryani has some sort of endgame, and we're a part of it, unknowingly or not.

    • It could be that there is indeed multiple alters per map, and you progressively craft the item at each one, and in turn, up the risk at each one.

    • An interesting twist on this would be that when choosing the red option, the item isn't given to you immediately, but instead transported to this "red-temple/pyramid" we see briefly atop the alter. This would be located in the Nightmare Realm as a penultimate encounter: similar to how the game "Curse of the Dead Gods" works.

    Conclusion

If you've made it this far, I must thank you for listening to another of my rambling theories. I'm not expecting anything to be 100% correct; again, it's just a bit of fun to tide me over until league launch. Either way, I'd love to hear other theories - whether similar or wildly different than my take. Nevertheless, we'll find out on April 8th at the official reveal!
