/r/pathofexile's current direction and how we want to change it

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 01:44 PM PDT

Hello everyone, we're back with another post to gauge your thoughts on /r/pathofexile and so you can help steer the future of the subreddit. Specifically, we wanted to have a discussion about negativity and toxicity within the sub and how it impacts new users, old users, GGG employees, and the way our sub is viewed by anyone else. We're not here to necessarily introduce more rules or to make your life here more difficult. However, we do want to push the sub into the healthiest direction possible and would like your help to do so.

To make things perfectly clear about how serious this discussion should be, the toxicity of the subreddit has gotten bad enough that we get modmails on a near-weekly basis about it, we have had GGG employees message us about the fatigue they feel any time they visit, and we have even had prominent community members post videos on it. We have been told by multiple sources, be it content creators or redditors or GGG employees, that they outright do not visit the subreddit anymore due to its growing and constant negativity. It has to stop.

With that in mind, we are going to have two separate posts about this topic, this one and another one perhaps a week from now. This post will focus on what we see and what we'd like to do about it. Next week's post will be a recap of what the community has said along with what our future actions will look like. Additionally, next week's post will include a number of ideas we have focused on subreddit participation and improvement beyond the usual item posts, bug posts, and so on.

To get right into it, /r/pathofexile has a problem with negativity, something not particularly uncommon with larger gaming subs but something we cannot let fester before it's too late. As I'm sure many of you would find relatable, Path of Exile is a game we're extremely passionate about and we want to see it at its absolute best. It's not fun when developers make mistakes, however egregious they may be, so we're often pretty damn vocal about the problems we have with the game. This is not an issue at its core, nor do we want to censor those who have a problem with parts of the game or its development.

Rather, the problem we are currently facing is that over the past year or so, the subreddit has gotten worse about escalating how issues are talked about and taking it past a civil discussion and into a vitriolic pissing contest between anyone who comments, no matter their viewpoint. This is what we cannot let happen anymore. And to be completely open and frank with everyone, our team is certainly not an innocent party in this matter and we should've taken steps to curtail this long ago. But we cannot be the sole driving force here, we need to act as a community to turn this around.

So what exactly is meant by escalating issues?

To keep examples recent, let's look at the debacle with the Blight, Metamorph, and Delirium stash tabs. GGG released these tabs and the community pushed back hard, saying that these tabs are silly purchases and should've been integrated into our current ones. There is nothing wrong with pushing back here and the initial threads on the matter were kept fairly civil (relatively speaking). Take a look at this thread's comment section in particular: https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/heqok2/chris_wilson_at_exilecon_stating_that_ggg_doesnt/

The discussion in this thread is exactly what we'd like to see when these events happen. This thread was an extremely active set of discussions which included laments, suggestions for the future, a few memes, and everything in between.

    Duplicate / Similar Threads

The first step to this being taken too far was our allowing far too many of these posts to rise to the front page. We're not in the business of censoring users. The problem at hand is not that there are complaints but that there are twenty threads of complaints beating the same topic to death. So in events like this, would the subreddit have any problem with our being much stricter with the duplicate thread rule?

Our difficulty in using this rule as it currently stands is that identifying similar threads is subjective, as is deciding which to remove. Do we remove the one with the least amount of comments? The one posted last? The one with the least comprehensive body and title? For example, here are some threads of this nature we have seen over the past couple days:

As you can see, all of these threads are heavily upvoted, have a good amount of comments, but are saying essentially the same thing. We understand and appreciate that everyone has a unique voice but there were easily ~100-120 threads removed during the first 24 hours of the stash tab debacle which were all some variation of being disappointed in GGG and wanting tabs to be consolidated, whether it be via pouches, league tabs, or something else. The point being that occurrences of duplicate threads are not uncommon and often result in their drowning out everything else.

To be more specific, we are normally fine with similar posts submitted within a few hours of one another if they aren't huge threads (often just standalone questions) or if the topic hasn't been beaten to death already. When the rule needs to be escalated, we'd like to remove any thread which:

    1. Is a standalone thread which could be a comment in one of the threads already on the front page OR
    2. The thread is solely a complaint or insult without a solution/suggestion/or otherwise constructive speech

    Expansion of Rule 3

We would also like to get your feedback on expanding the language in Rule 3 to include threads and comments which are solely complaints or insults without substance. In this way, users would still be completely free to complain about a balance issue, show exasperation over a bug, or almost anything else so long as it was paired with constructive feedback on the topic at hand. For example:

    • Screw Harvest, it's basically Standard! - Not ok
    • Screw Harvest. I dislike the amount of seeds dropping and feel like there are too many filler crafting options and not enough exciting moments. I would've enjoyed it more if we had extra mobs in maps, the seed monsters were harder, and there were more exciting crafting options. -Absolutely ok

The idea here is to shift how we as a community give feedback to GGG through Reddit. There is little to no use in threads saying "X is bad" whereas there is immense value in threads with "I dislike X because Y and Z is how I would recommend fixing it". We, as the mod team, would still need to be careful with the amount of these threads being posted, as per the above prior section, but as a whole this would lend itself to a more positive and constructive discussion.

Use of Flairs & Bug Reports

We're looking to replace the default "Fluff" flair setting to one of several possible strategies in order to enforce proper flaring. Currently, threads are submitted by default with a "Fluff" flair and users are encouraged to report threads with incorrect flairs. Outside of our manual correction of flairs when we see them and removal of item showcases without an explanation from the poster, we do not have any real requirements for flairs but this is something we could easily change, especially based on the feedback we saw here: https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/hie581/can_we_1_add_a_criticism_tag_to_the_forum_and_2/

An option that was brought up, which we can manage, would be a strict requirement for the use of flairs. The workflow for how this would work is that when a user submits a thread, we would have a bot respond to the thread with a simple "Does this thread have the correct flair?" message (it would be a bit more comprehensive but that's the idea) and the poster would be required to respond to it with "yes" or "flaired". Once the poster responds to the bot, it will approve the post, making it visible to everyone else.

This process does three important things:

    1. It makes previously unaware posters aware of what flairs are and how to use them. The bot message could easily include a link to a guide on how to flair their posts.
    2. Makes it easier for users to filter posts they want to see/ignore
    3. It keeps low effort posts down as those users will often submit something and then ignore it for half a day unless we remove/correct it.

For bug reports specifically, we wanted to entertain the idea of having a bot reply to the poster with a message directing them to the official forums and real means of reporting bugs. The subreddit is not a great place to report bugs and gets far less visibility than reporting in-game or on the official forums but that doesn't mean these posts do not deserve some amount of discussion. Please let us know what you think of either idea here or if you have ideas of your own.

    Personal Attacks

As a closer, we would like to address the use of GGG employees in memes, complaints, and other threads. The sheer volume of negativity in the subreddit has unfortunately caused posts to tip-toe their way into attacking named GGG employees such as Bex and Chris. This is completely unacceptable and should never happen in any way, shape, or form. You are free to disagree with every single one of their decisions and criticize the game but the moment it evolves into a personal attack, the line is crossed.

The use of GGG photos in memes should follow the same thought process. For example, using Chris in the famous nerfhammer gif is perfectly allowable. Using Chris in an inflammatory meme about him running away with bags of money throwing out excuses is not. This line of thought will similarly be extended to GGG teams. Replacing "Bex" with "the QA Team" does not make an inflammatory post any less of a personal insult. Simply put, take a moment to look at your meme before posting. If it is a personal attack or insult towards someone, don't post it. Making and/or spreading images/gifs like that can have much farther reaching implications than just some Reddit karma.

If we start to see comments heading in a bad direction, we are going to start being stricter with locking and removing threads. We do need your help with this though because we are just a small team and do not have the bandwidth to read every single comment which gets submitted. If you see something which you think breaks the rules, report it. Reporting gets it on our radar immediately, making it much more likely to be removed in a timely manner.

So with that said, these are our base level thoughts on the matter and a hopefully simple solution to help the problem. We're a few volunteers who do this in our downtime though so we're more than open and happy to take on suggestions or direction from the community if you think it will help make the subreddit a more positive experience.

Why isn't there a Syndicate Cheat Sheet in-game showing the rewards of each Syndicate member when you open the Betrayal tab to make your choices?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 08:33 AM PDT

I started to do Jun missions again and suddenly popped up the option for Rin to move to Intervention. You know what I did? I just imprisoned her because i have no idea what she gives when she's on Intervention.

I'm tired of alt tabbing the game 3x every single map to see what you need, what to buy or what to do. On top of that you keep changing the Syndicate rewards, so we need an updated spreadsheet to see what a syndicate member do in each of the four options. Just... why isn't there a tab to check the reward options in-game?

I wonder if I was a new player with so much information that the game doesn't give you, I would probably spend 90% of my in-game time alt tabbing and googling, it would be overwhelming. I'm sure I would quit if I joined PoE in the state it is now. This kind of QoL is extremely underlooked imo. It's something really easy to do and is the difference between "my god here we go again" and "oh thats a nice option", in this case, which happens very often, and I'm sure makes many people quit.

Neat lore fact #9: Why you got exiled

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 05:26 AM PDT

Recently I learned there was an old character creation menu, that was totally different than today's. The Exiles tell their stories in their own words on the ship to Wraeclast. I really, really, like it. Sets the tone of the game perfectly.

Currently, why you got exiled is not well explained ingame. Here are their stories.

"Attention, prisoners! For your crimes against Oriath you have been exiled to the forsaken continent of Wraeclast! The Magisters Of Oriath are merciful and have granted all Exiles one weapon. Choose wisely! Oriath has bestowed a gift upon you. A chance to redeem your crimes, a new life, do not squander it!

Swim straight to the shore, stay together, and look for others who can help you. You're not the first Exiles, and you won't be the last."

    Marauder

A Karui warrior who was made a slave for 3 years. Rebelled against his masters.

"I am a warrior, raised to honour my Ancestors, to die with a weapon in my hand and the Karui Way in my blood.

Oriath chained me, made me its slave. For three years I have lived without my family, my pride, my Way.

I welcome Exile. I welcome Wraeclast. Hear me, Ancestors! A slave stands behind you. A warrior stands before you.

And Death walks at our side."

Marauder does not say explain he was exiled but Maramoa in act3 says they both were exiled for the same reason (and, maybe for the same insurrection?). She intentionally became an exile to be free of slavery, killing her master and charged with Inciting Insurrection amongst the Bonded Workforce.

    Duelist

A famous gladiator in Theopolis. Stabbed and killed a noble for insulting him.

"He had it coming. Was I supposed to bear such insults with inaction, simply because of his high birth? That lord sang a different tune with six inches of steel in his guts. Now they call me a criminal for defending my honour. I'd do the same again to anyone who crossed me.

I care naught for riches, little for friendship. The duel is all I need. I may be an exile, but I will carve a road back to Oriath, one foe, one victory at a time. Ill fortune may have banished me to Wraeclast, but I will live to hear them scream my name in the great arenas again."

    Ranger

A loner living off the land, off the grid. Exiled for poaching.

"No life can be owned. Not a deer's. Not a rabbit's. And not mine. Every creature has a birth-given right to live however it will. However it can.

My right is to hunt. To feed off the wilderness in the understanding that, one day, will feed off me.

The fat lords of Oriath have no such understanding. They call me 'poacher' and 'thief'. Clap me in irons and haul me like cargo into exile. No matter. I'll make the forests and mountains of Wraeclast my new home. My freedom and my bow... that's all I need."

    Shadow

A hired killer in Oriath. Betrayed by The Guild of the Night after assassinating someone important.

"A Simple job, I was told. Silence a big mouth. Get a big payout. And no one was going to be the wiser. Tidy. Except for one loose end. Me.

I would have kept my mouth shut. Professional integrity, it's called. Unfortunately not something my employers believed in.

They raised a toast to a job well done. I drank and next thing I know I'm on this stinking crate bound for exile. It's not a complete loss, I suppose. The way I hear it, there'll be plenty of work for a man of my talents in Wraeclast."

    Witch

A witch. Villagers burned her house down, so she killed their children and destroyed the village.

They laughed at her. They pointed fingers, pulled their children away and whispered in the streets. They burned her home and drove her from the village. She got even. Flame, shadow, disease and frost. These are the tools of the mighty witch and she wields them with a reckless power she can barely control. Though she may look frail and delicate, do not underestimate her. Many have, and they are counted among the burned and withered corpses in her wake.

"They were right to fear me. If only they had listened to their cowardice. Had they not taken my home with fire, I would not have taken their children.

Now I am banished to Wraeclast. I've heard the dark rumours... seen the terror in other exiles' eyes. But to me one land is like any other. The elements are my allies, the dead are my servants, and fear will be my closest friend."

    Templar

Had visions that the Templar caused the Cataclysm. Exiled as a heretic for asking too many questions about Wraeclast's past.

    Official video

    Scion

The daughter of corrupt nobles, the Scion was forced for political reasons to marry someone she did not love. Exiled to Wraeclast for killing her husband on their wedding night.

"The youngest daughter of a respected family. Dresses, dances, suitors... a fortunate life for one fortunately born. My life... had I not been different. Had I not thought more clearly, learned more quickly, dreamed more deeply and darkly than any child should.

There seems to be no limit to what I can do, no walls containing my talents. To my parents, I was a raw nugget to be battered and moulded into a prize for admiration, for envy... for sale. That life died on a wedding bed in Theopolis.

Today, Wraeclast offers me a new life, written not by birth, nor family, nor society. This life will be written to answer but one question: Who am I?"

Horticrafting stations deleting T2/T3 crafts - when station is full or not attached.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 06:34 AM PDT

I've run into both versions of this bug. I've only run into it on my T2/3 setup yellow collector.

1: The collector offers to let you save a craft, even though no horticrafter is attached. The craft is deleted.

2: The collector offers to let you save a craft, even when it is full. The craft is deleted.

Be careful and check your horticrafting station before saving a craft, don't just rely on the UI to be right.

Why does block get so many interactions while dodge doesn't?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 04:19 AM PDT

There are so many on-block affixes in the game. Meanwhile there is hardly one for dodge. I know dodge stacking is easier in general than block but now there is glancing blow, max block is easy to reach for blocking being so good at mitigation and on block synergies like recovery on block.

Can dodge get something? Increased onslaught effect on dodge, smoke cloud on dodge, flask gain charges on dodge, something.

[opinion] Remove Hall of Grandmasters from Atlas Completion

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 08:36 PM PDT

Hall of Grandmasters has been kind of a mess for a while. It's a map you have to bring specific flasks, and often specific skills (i.e. Frost Bomb) in order to complete. It's extremely easy to die in and most players either ignore it or get a dedicated HoGM farmer to carry them through it a single time for completion and then ignore it. I also know I am not the only player that experiences significant performance issues in the map, slowing to a crawl or freezing the game each time I breach another wave of opponents. This is an even greater problem - even if I did change skills and items specifically to complete the map, I would still likely be bursted down several times while the game was lagging during the map, making it obnoxious to complete solo in SC and basically unrunnable in HC.

I wouldn't want to remove the map from drops entirely, because it doesn't really affect most players to sometimes drop a HoGM that they know they cannot run, and I understand that people have put significant money into getting their builds and names into the game through the HoGM. But I dont understand why, as a player who likes to try to complete the atlas each league, I have to deal with either getting an (often unreliable) carry through the map or just being one off completion. I'd love to see it removed from the atlas map objective count, putting it in a place similar to Beachhead.

TL;DR: HoGM is a bit of a mess and shouldn't be counted towards completion.

Quick edit - I'm getting a decent amount of replies about how you can just bring a Balefire or make another character to get through HoGM. As I said above, the fact that a character needs to be specifically geared and/or built to get through this single unique map is part of the issue, but it's a way bigger issue that for me, and for seemingly a pretty large number of my guild mates (so I assume it's a widespread problem) that the map causes SIGNIFICANT performance issues, often freezing the game for several seconds when breaching a new wave, giving the enemies time to just burst me down. If GGG could wave a magic wand so that HoGM behaves well in everyone's client, I may not even dislike needing to clear it for completion enough to make this post. Since the map has had this issue for me since I started playing in Harbinger and across 2 PCs, that seems pretty unlikely.

Methods for Casual Players Accumulating Currency

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 11:37 AM PDT

At the risk of getting downvoted I wanted to start a discussion about noobs accumulating currency. This league has proven difficult for me as a casual player when it comes to building up any substantial amount of currency. With the chaos to exalt ratio so quickly jacked, I'm kind of left wondering the best way to proceed.

In delirium, it was easy to use chaos recipe to build up 50 - 100 chaos, then do some rudimentary cluster jewel crafting and make some currency. It was also viable to just run delirium encounters in order to farm enough to start upgrading a tune.

So far I haven't found anything that is reliable. The chaos recipe doesn't seem that useful anymore, as farming enough rares for a 10 ex piece of gear just doesn't seem feasible with the current conversion rate.

Are there any viable methods this league for a casual to build up ex? I'd love to hear a collection of other people's methods and potentially turn this thread into something that other casual players can reference in their journey to get to and through endgame content.

Even with the difficulty in farming, still really enjoying the new mechanic and looking forward to learning more about crafting!
