New Player Introduction to Building Thread

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 04:47 AM PDT

    Hi there

I'm posting in hopes of getting a little bit of a better idea of some of the more "Complicated" Build mechanic's "

So i am a new player I started playing in harvest I've tried Trade and recently switched to SSF and i am really intrigued with the concept of running my own builds, For the most part I think I have a decent understanding of the different layers/Scaling.

But i am curious what are the Build creating for more advanced Dummies 101 Handbook.

Also so that anyone who is curious has a "Cheat sheet" to look at.

    As a Start.

What are the Defensive layering options & Interactions

    Example's of what I mean

    • Is Evasion / Dodge the same thing?
    • Are my Options Negation's(Resistance, Armor ect) Block, Dodge, Evade, Regeneration only?
    • Why does it seem like Scaling ES is better than life in some cases? And how do you scale to huge numbers like 10k ES Without dumping every passive point into the tree or finding ES % rings ect.
    • What are the Basic goal value's like, Res Cap 6k hp 50% block to get threw most content
    • Why is the Vanity Jewel that gives Divine flesh and then adding some Physical to fire damage taken so good?

What offensive scaling techniques are there

    Examples of these:

    • Why do most builds convert from Physical to elemental ( I believe its because of Armor)
    • What are the Damage Goal Numbers E.G 20k Tooltip Damage( Or is it to skill dependant)
    • Is scaling Spell Damage or Specific Elemental Damage better E.G Spell Damage > Fire Damage
    • What are the type of charges every build is looking for? Ideally E.g Do you want Inspiration, Power, Frenzy on almost every build you can?
    • When is Resistance reduction better than just scaling pure damage?
    • At what point does the scaling become Diminishing E.G if I have a Fireball that does 1000 Damage and I scale by 100% Spell Damage then Scale by 50% Fire damage and 15% Global Damage At what point is this Diminished
    • And as a follow up to previous When do I Start scaling other sources Example of this,I have scaled Fireball as far as I can at which point do I add Hypothermia/Maine ect to Scale of a new Source so that the Fireball Does its damage then chills/mames ect and then scales the damage again of that ( If I understand the interaction correctly)

    What are the Speed Technique's

    • Besides 30% move speed boots/Quick Silvers with 20% Quality what are some cheeky ways to become a Zippy boi
    • Is there an animation Cap? and is it silly to try and scale cast speed with any Spell casting skill? E.G BF/BB Trying to get insane cast speeds worth it or is this reserved for something like VD/ED/PS

And then of course what are your secrets to sustaining a build past a league, assuming there are no giant nerfs, How do you introduce the build to the new mechanics.

    Apologies for the long read

Essence Drain/Contagion | Lacerate Bleed: How do you overcome these hurdles in maps?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 12:20 AM PDT

Hello everyone! With the new league approaching, once again we all think about starter builds. Two of them I love and tried out several times give me the following problems, maybe you can help.

Essence Drain: I love essence drain and the playstyle that goes with it, but everytime I finish act 10, I face the following problems:

    1. Single target dps: While mapping in general goes fast and smoothly, I find myself taking way to long to kill certain bosses / unique monsters.
    2. Way too squishy: I die to porcupines and feel squishy in general, since I find most evasion based builds aren't too tanky. As long as you dodge, everything is fine, but when 2 3 hits come through, you're dead. Is there any other thing than shaper influenced shield with regain ES on block mod + expensive ES gear to become tanky early on?

Let's say you just finished act 10. How do you approach these things? What do you do first to become tanky / get more single target dps?

Lacerate Bleed max block gladiator: I also love that playstyle and the tankiness but here are again 2 problems I keep facing:

    1. Leveling: The leveling process feels kind of awful since the damage isn't really there while leveling at a league start. Any leveling tips?
    2. DPS too low: I feel once I reach maps, it is quite comfortable to become tanky, but the damage is lacking until you get an elder axe with 60% chance that bleed does 100% more damage mod, which is very expensive and not affordable early on or last league at all since I didn't find a single Exalt the first 3 weeks and never managed to craft one myself.

How do you tackle the dps issue? What do you focus on first after finishing act 10?

One thing I never tried is Bleed Bow Gladiator, but I fear I will run into the same issues. Low dps until I get some incredibly expensive bow + I won't have max block :( Can you guys help me to find these builds appealing once again? Thanks a lot!

Ways of consuming corpses for Essence Glutton without self-casting offerings discussion

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 05:15 AM PDT

Wise theory-crafting maniacs from this sub, I convoke you again!

I was diving into the wiki looking for ways to consume corpses for triggering the Essence Glutton juicy regens. The goal is to find different ways to consume corpses that do not require to self-cast an Offering skill. As a result of that research, and like in all my previous researches regarding PoE, I ended with more questions than promising plans.

    Interesting stuff I found:

    - Discipline of Kitava cluster jewel: https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Disciple_of_Kitava

    - The Queen's Hunger: not really what I am looking for as the 5 sec CD is too long for my needs.

    Doubts:

    - Do Devouring Totems devouring count for Essence Glutton or it must be the PJ itself who needs to trigger the corpse consumption?

    - Did I miss some flask/passive/setup to auto-consume corpses ?

Share your favorite ways to consume corpses!

Oh! I forgot, I cannot use the Devouring Diadem as my helmet slot is already assigned.

Recommend me an infused lab facerolling build

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 03:16 AM PDT

Hi, in the last weekend of the league I want to run my belt enchants in case it won't be possible after league end.

Speed and budget doesn't matter, I just want to reduce the chance of fail to near zero as I'm not an experienced lab runner, and traps in the new labs stings hard.

I won't campaign so my choices are witch, marauder and duelist.

    Thanks!

    Party play 2 man

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 08:26 PM PDT

Hey, what's the best support to play with mf dps carry. We want to start new league as two man and I don't know if sion or guardian is the choice. If you could recommend what carry should play as and what's the best choice for support is I would greatly appreciate. I was thinking some kind of ranger ice shot/RoA as carry and Scion/Guardian as support.

    Salutations Exiles 😉

With the upcoming 3.12 league, I've taken it upon myself to deep dive into some of the mechanical intricacies of PoE and would love some of the links you have found most solace in. With the previously quoted, Jousis being an absolute madman with his manipulation of intended(or unintended) mechanical know-how, to create these abominations makes me adore the way people play the game. Be it those who enjoy snapshotting damage to inflate their numbers, or those with absurd 100% invulnerability, to those utilising multiple overlapping screen clears till destroy their pc, to those using basic projectile overload, Ramyeon comes to mind, I wish to try piece together the pieces of exodia for those who wish to follow the path of the enlightenment.

How do I layer defences for a channeling spell trickster?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 08:20 PM PDT

What's the best way to layer defences as a trickster?

Obviously being channeled, glancing blows and block seems like an amazing route, but it also takes a lot of pathing to get to (before you get the jewel to jump spaces). This option seems to be a large investment and feel like it might lower my fps too much.

Other than that route, what are the more endgame options?

Love the idea of flesh and stone in sand stance to blind nearby enemies. Pretty sweet layer to have when your channeling.

Considering doing Golementalist at league start! Please help!

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 10:36 PM PDT

    Hi guys!

    Bit of background.

I've been playing POE since 3.0 Harbinger league and have only ever made 1 summoner build (phys vaal skeles by Viperesque) and for the upcoming 3.12, I've been curious regarding league starting as a Golementalist!

I have a bit of a plan but I haven't got experience regarding golem builds at all so I have a few questions.

    1. Is it a viable league starter or will it require too many jewels to get going?
    2. Is it better to level it as a spellcaster and then respec into golems by the time i farm Chaos recipe in Blood Aquaducts or go summoner from the get go?
    3. Any other tips or advice that I hadn't even thought of for this going in?

Here is a PoB of what i've got so far roughly. There are 2 trees -the lvling tree i plan to take as well as a golementalist tree that I plan to transition to once i obtain the jewels. Which also leads me to ask:

How many jewels will actually be required//how much investment will be required for the build to start feeling 'smooth' for endgame?

    PoB: https://pastebin.com/UtdBRRg8

Thanks so much for reading :)

    Cold Conversion BV

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 08:38 PM PDT

I'm looking to start 3.12 (patch notes pending) as BV, but most of what I see is fire or poison. Cold conversion looks more fun imo, but everything I can see says not to league start for cold but fails to elaborate why. I've never played BV, but have played winter orb and think it looks fun and very fast especially as pathfinder. Anyone with bv experience able to help me out here? Would I be seriously hemming myself up if I start as cold bv on pathfinder?

Looking for a fire spell build that isn't volatile dead

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 06:31 PM PDT

I was currently bouncing around the idea of fireball either as archmage or maybe a tanky necro spellslinger. Anyone have any suggestions or builds they want to share to help get an idea of what to plan for?

Firewall - spit balling ideas before we know numbers

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 05:43 PM PDT

The minute I saw firewall from the new poe Heist trailer, it reminded me of a build I've considered, but not played as of yet. A build that lacked both speed and some other unknown component... which might be firewall.

Triggers are always fun to work with, and I love asenoths helm. The recently reworked fireball jewel causes fireball to apply scorch instead of ignite. My thought is that using both firewall and fireball as triggered supports for burning arrow could produce some interesting results.

We don't know too much about the new league, but seeing as its reward structure seems (so far) based around survival before speed, maybe this is the chance for chieftain to shine? Who knows, maybe this will be another speed meta, but it might also be a situation of "dead exiles are literally worthless".

I'm interested in hearing other peoples thoughts for ways to use firewall, let me know!

Best build to farm 5 way legion encounters

    Hi !

Everything is in the title !

I assume HH with the whole solstice, kaom's, self curse temp chains and inspired learnings ? Or is this dead as HH can steal hexproof now ?

And apart from that, is it still best to go phys cyclone or occultist bv or even TS deadeye can do better ?

    Thanks for your insights !

    projectile pierce, which builds?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 03:07 PM PDT

I have Hunter boots with the mod "projectiles pierce 2 additional targets"; which builds would this be valuable for? It seems like most bow builds eschew pierce for fork or chain these days, no?

    Scorching Ray questions

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 06:36 AM PDT

Hey! Some questions about SR and burn:

    - Can you dodge SR? Since most of spell dodge I've seen are "dodge spell hits" while SR doesn't hit?

    - Can you avoid SR damage? Elemental ailments are possible to avoid, but burn isn't right?

    - Is SR unblockable? Since block seems to only work against hits?

    - Is burning damage from SR possible to reflect? If it is, can Paragon of Calamity stop it?

    - In a situation where you don't have a divine shrine effect, you can't use MoM because you've no mana anymore, and ES can't recharge because you're receiving damage, is immortal call and fire resistance the only solution to survive over huge fire DoT for a long time?

    - I've seen some people trying to get 100% fire resistance temporarly, can multiple effects over fire resistance such as a total of -96% fire resistance work over them? Is burning damage affected by fire resistance (don't know if it counts only simple fire damage or fire DoT too).

    Thanks for answering:)

PS: any info about scorch ailment?

Help me find a new build for 3.12?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 01:41 PM PDT

So last few league's I played some builds that where fun but felt really weak. Mainly because I didn't know how gear worked in this game. I played necromancers in my first 2 league (3.9 and 3.10) and had it as a league starter in 3.11. I eventually played ED/Cont/SR spellslinger and loved the game play (with Blight totem). The build wasn't the strongest but got me to do most content including Sirus AL8. Now I'm looking for something similar but maybe has a few more skills to use. I tried a build(ice shot) from this sub but it was a nightmare to level and didn't get passed A6 because bosses died way to slow. I'm looking for a range (caster/bow) that doesn't has many mana problems(this seem to be a bow issue I had with a burning arrow build before) and can do all/most content without too much specific gear(super rare items etc). Prefer similar playstyle as a ed/cont/sr spellslinger. Can you guys help me out? I like it point out I also played winter orb as my very first character ever in 3.9 and loved it but gave up because I had no clue about gearing.

What's cremation and vd like to play?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 11:20 AM PDT

I want to start self cast archmage cremation and vd as a necro. I think it sounds great because of the sustain options. I'm looking to go hybrid then maybe low life as a late game option. I'm looking at a 6 link, and a pseudo 5 link probably in gloves with crit multi and +1 levels, or possibly slower proj gloves with +1 aoe with cremation in there.

Has anyone done anything like this?

I really like spammy, mash all the buttons builds, so I think spell cascade desecrate, then vd is going to feel great. With the recovery from necro, I should be able to get going nice by first lab.

I'm thinking shroud of the lightless and possibly Hale negator while stacking abyss jewels with flat Mana. Then use any shield, possibly prism guardian for late game with ivory tower. I really want one of those kitava jewels.

I'm not really looking at mom, or agnostic because I did that this league, but definitely looking to use arcane cloak. I think I should be able to get 5-6k life and 3k es with about 5k Mana. I think the damage would end up being a little low on vd, but if I can use cremation for extra single target, and then just keep smashing with vd, I feel like that should probably be ok.

Is there anything I should think about? Are there any obvious conflicts?

    Is it viable

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 11:01 AM PDT

Like the tag said, I need help in figuring out some info for a build. I have finally obtained a "One with Nothing" jewel, and I was wondering if it is usable with the Rigwalds curse necklace?

Considering it said it attributes towards unarmed attacks, would that not be null an void with the jewel?
