Self-cast Ice Nova looks like fun, but what version to take?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 03:29 AM PST

The initial spark came with Esoro's Frostbold + Ice Nova build presentation. The concept looks like a lot of fun, but I'm not entirely convinced I would want to go Hiero with it (especially with the Witch reworks this league). Also, while I doubt that's the case, judging by PoB numbers alone his Hiero looks very squishy to me; but I guess I'm just used to high life pools, high block, high evasion, etc.

While his build remains mostly the same in 3.13 (with the decision between life-leech vs charges being the only major difference I can spot), I kept digging for other versions. I found a couple others (Mathil, etc), but most of them seem outdated.

Now, I think I would prefer to go Occultist or maybe Elementalist (for the flair), but I'm unsure about their defenses. I've never done an ES build (I always go life), but Occultist almost asks for it; essentially, I'm afraid to end up in a progression corner and being forced to re-roll. I tried to fidget around and do my own ES Occultist variant, but I'm skeptical since I can't really test it - everything I go for seems rather squishy (but maybe I'm just underestimating ES) or lacks crit. I always end up point-starved.

I like MoM, but mostly in combination with Archmage and Agnostic, which wouldn't be the case here.

What other viable versions of self-cast Frostbolt & Ice Nova are there? What are the advantages and drawbacks? How tanky do they feel? How hard are they to scale into lategame?

    Just some other random thoughts:

    • Archmage isn't an option here, is it? I guess that would just become too mana intensive...
    • I really like Pledge of Hands. If the inclusion is possible, fantastic. But I'm not sure what I lose with other options, like wand + wand or wand + shield.
    • Is going crit the only viable option here?
    • I would prefer to avoid mechanics like EE in this particular case.
    • I guess Ghost Reaver is a must if going ES?
    • It doesn't have to be a zoom-zoom build. I tend to be a slow player, I regularly just stop and calmly pick things up before moving forward.

Please keep in mind that I'm mostly a casual gamer; a realistic budget for me is 5-7ex top. I don't intend to do T16+ 100% delirium maps with it, but perhaps being able to at least do all the League / Expansion content (including Maven) would be great. I'm also not really asking for finished builds, but perhaps even just experiences, suggestions or estimates from more experienced players; I tend to play "slow" and tanky builds for the most part, so ES just has me worried.

Thanks for the help & opinions :)

    Elementalist Storm Call starter here?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 03:15 AM PST

Just wanna make sure if it's worth trying.

I'm afraid it won't be good at late game even can't kill the map boss.

Is anybody here starting Storm Call or have experience with Storm Call?

Saboteurs/Miners out there, what skill are you playing?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 11:49 PM PST

Haven't seen any threads here about this topic:

I've league started Arc Mines twice before, but never played Sab otherwise.

I planned to league start BL or maybe GC mines, but after the Ascendancy changes, I'm not sure what to do. I'm not at all saying mines are bad now, but don't the AOE changes hurt specifically GC and BL very badly?

If I understand correctly, there is a certain % aoe breakpoint for BL mines in order to trigger twice on one monster. To achieve this previously, you needed to grab AoE on the tree, and anoint something for AoE. Does the lost AoE make this even more difficult than before?

For GC, I hear that AoE is also very important in order to "feel good" and hit the final cascade. Does this not also nerf GC significantly?

With these thoughts in mind, I'm now considering something else. Fireball mines seem like a shittier Arc/Pyro miner, and Purifying Flame mines just don't look appealing to me. Maybe I should just play Arc mines :)

I've never played a trapper before, I don't think I would like the playstyle.. I've also considered Ascendant for mines.

Anyway, what are you miners playing?

    Ranger > Deadeye??

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 02:12 AM PST

Am I the only one who thinks that Raider actually looks better than Deadeye in 3.13?

I mean Deadeye got a lot of very cool changes, but Raider actually seems more viable now even for deadeye signature builds like Wanding and Iceshot.

To me Deadeye lacks any sort of defensive mechanics. Raider with Avatar of veil branch get the tools to dodge cap, the reduced accuracy combined with Flesh and stone is another great defensive layer, Ailment immunity with permanent Phasing??

The other thing is the new far shot. 60% more damage sounds good in theory, but the part about loosing Visibility on big beyond mobs and bosses and not being able to skip the mobs blocking it, sound annoying tbh.

Raider with Point blank and frenzy charge stacking outdamages it anyways :)

    Any thoughts?

For those going Penance Brand in Ritual, what's your build idea?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 12:59 AM PST

I am thinking of trying a version that's not the traditional Assassin based w/ Void Batteries and instead something like ignite based new Elementalist ascendancy. Anyone else thinking of playing a penance brand build?

Need suggestion : Sword & Board : Heavy Strike + Shield Charge build

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 10:14 PM PST

    Hi all,

I have played this game since delirium but I am more of a traditional RPG style and in this league, I decide to go with the buffed Heavy Strike and Shield Charge. But really have no meta-knowledge so I am open to all suggestion.

These are what I roughly plan out to play

    1) Heavy Strike for boss (6 links on chest)

    2) Shield Charge for clear and mobility (4-5 links? on glove or boot?)

    3) Melee face tanking

    4) Is Scion or Raider viable? I am kinda tired of overleech slayer. he is my go-to in every league.

These are my questions that need suggestions

    1) Is it possible to face tank without overleech? it kinda locks me with slayer or scion. overleech is lovely but I want to try something new.

    2) Any specific unique items or keystone that can be crucial to the build? I always choose equipment and passives looking only at numbers.

    3) I always go for physical damage because I can't get past the boss's 50% elemental resistance. But I am open to new ideas.

    4) What other skill gems and support gems should I take. I assume pride and flesh&stone is a must.

    5) since the heavy strike has the ability to stun, do you think I can stun Sirus if I invest enough?

PS. This is my most successful face tanking build that can facetank everything except Uber Elder back in delirium. (with around 90ex investment tho).

    Detonate Dead vs Cremation

Looking to pop some corpses for my SSF league starter, but struggling to choose between self-cast DD and Cremation. Can anyone with experience playing these builds comment on their relative merits? How do they compare in clear, single target, and survivability? Thanks!

Elementalist Ele Hit Wander with Trinity support

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 08:01 PM PST

    https://pastebin.com/Sh7WmPe7

Yoinked a Mathil PoB he did about a year ago as a basis and stripped out the herald stuff and few tweaks here and there to try better suit new ascendency

It looks solid on paper, decent damage for GMP set-up, tons of defensive layers

It's 5 link with trinity support bonus on a flask

I've done ele hit plenty of times but never done buffed elementalist using golems so not entirely sure about that part, not enough mana to even resummon kinda relying on the ascendency

Anyone know if golems using elemental army would be even able to proc the Mastermind of Discord 'Exposure you inflict' buff

Self cursing Guardian Idea - 2k% increased dmg?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 02:49 AM PST

I'm planning to play a Guardian as a league starter and was just wondering if this Idea could work.
With the change of the Time of Need ascendancy in combination with Sanctum of Thought notable I can get 100% reduced Effect of Curses on you pretty easily.

With every Self-Flagellation Jewel I can add 1 additional curse on me and it gives me 20% additional damage per curse on me.

With Shackles of the Wretched I can reflect 4 curses on me.

Assuming I run maps which add another curse on me.

    If I do the math:

    5 Curses * 4 Self-Flagellation * 5 * 20% dmg = 2.000% increased dmg

Did I overlook something or is this realistic?

Thoughts on non-ignite Frost Bomb build?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 09:38 PM PST

With Second Wind and some CD reduction, do you think Frost Bomb would be able to be used as a main skill? There's also a helm enchant for CD reduction as well as alternate quality.

Another way might be to alternate it with an attack using Inquisitor. Battlemage with with Replica Oro's or Debeon's Drige would give a ton of added cold to Frost Bomb, and FB's cold exposure would also work nicely for your cold-based attacks.

    Is anyone theorycrafting something similar?

    Hydrosphere Theorycrafting Builds for 3.13

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 02:10 PM PST

With the new level 20 Hydrosphere gem information out, what builds do you guys have in mind for it? It seems pretty strong so far if you choose cold and double dip on Hatred's benefits.

    For reference:

Hydrosphere: Does 356-533 physical damage every 0.4 seconds (2.5 times a second), for about 1111 physical DPS which is then converted.

Blade Vortex (10 Stacks): Does 101-151 physical damage 7.5 times a second, for about 945 physical DPS.

Both spells can't scale off of cast speed, and Blade Vortex is one of the stronger single target spells in the game. Because Hydrosphere has native cold conversion, you can league start with it instead of waiting for a Watcher's Eye for cold BV.

Edit: I forgot to account for the 35% more damage per blade for Blade Vortex, bringing its physical DPS up to 4523. Hydrosphere only does a small fraction of its damage >.<.

Looking for a pob for Trinity Wild Strike Raider

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 06:04 PM PST

I've been trying to do a pob for that, but being able to select only 1 type of damage on pob isn't helping me at all. I'm kinda looking for something to copy or modify for myself. Thanks.

Tips for my Divine Ire Battlemage

I am looking into starting our private league with a build something like this, going hybrid life + ES because of Pious Path, PoB is set to pretty trash gear except the axe is around 400DPS. I am just looking for general ideas and tips about building this and also discussion about Inquisitor which seems so freaking cool in upcoming patch.

Share your own Inquisitor PoB's as well! I'm really looking forward to seeing them!

Is selfcast Ball Lightning viable without Pledge of Hands?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 04:26 AM PST

This league will likely be my first attempt at SSF (outside of shorter events) and I'm trying to decide if Self Cast ball lightning (likely Hierophant) is a viable alternative? The guide's I've seen makes me think this build should be right up my alley, however they all use pledge of hands, and it's unlikely I'll get that to drop.

Have any of you tried this build without pledge of hands? If so, how did it work? If not, do you have suggestions for similar builds that might work better (preferably self cast or attack based)?

    Toxic Rain Ascendancy Differences?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 06:13 PM PST

I've never played a build with either now or poison and I'm looking to do a Toxic Rain / Caustic arrow bow build.

I keep seeing that there's a bunch of options for Ascendancy though and I want to be sure im headed in the right direction.

Can anyone explain the differences in play style between the various Ascendancies for this kind of build?

Specifically Trickster / Pathfinder / Raider / Deadeye
