Blackflame Hexblast Occultist pretty good, wanting some feedback

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 09:50 PM PST

I wanted to mess around with Hexblast since it was announced but stayed away after some initial reviews. The new Blackflame unique along with damage effectiveness boost to Hexblast re-ignited (yeah I went there) my interest. I took some guidance from different places including Mathil, SmashinBob, and poe.ninja.

I know reddit attention span is short, so feel free to skip ahead to the list, but I tried to cover everything I've tried so far. Lmk if PoB doesn't work, I also have notes on the gear in there. PoB: https://pastebin.com/KZzmmxia

Anyway, I wanted to get some more eyes on this build/tree. Right now I am doing Guardians averaging <1 deaths and can do their invitation (a couple deaths) on a 5-link and about 100c in gear. Most of that is in clusters, 5L Carcass Jack, and Intuitive Leap (which I might drop anyway). I can full clear juiced delirious maps with an Obliteration added for QoL, so far up to 40% now. I was able to get A5 to last phase on a 5L but I suck at that fight so I wasn't able to finish it, unfortunately. Will try again with a 6L.

The basic damage loop is: self-cast a curse (enfeeble or temp-chains), wait 0.04s-1.44s to accumulate up to max doom. Vixen's Entrapment also casts Despair + Vulnerability + another defensive curse (enfeeble or temp chians). Cast Hexblast. Hexblast hits, removes self-cast curse, and ignites the enemy which takes burning damage as chaos. Impending Doom support procs Doom Blast which hopefully crits, procing Elemental Overload. The hits re-apply the initially self-cast curse, at a lower effectiveness from an on-hit source for full up-time. Damage is boosted by increasing burning damage and chaos damage taken.

I am now thinking this could be a very viable league starter, so I am not trying to scale gear, since there are some very obvious upgrades. While technically a 2-button build, it feels significantly smoother than my BF/BB starter, due to naturally high cast speed.

The build is rather defensive (40k Max hit) due to self-cast Enfeeble/temp chains boosted by 40 doom, temp chains/enfeeble on hit, sand stance, endurance charge generation with Enduring Composure, CWDT + Immortal Call + Stone Golem, easy positive chaos res due to Occultist's Withering Presence, some block chance, elusive from Withering Step, more blind Disorienting Display and Smoking Remains, and Fortify from Shield Charge. I also can keep my distance until after enemy is weakened, and mobility is high. No defense is truly maxed out, but there's many layers. This is partly due to not really needing many sockets for damage -- that mostly comes from tree, gear, and gem levels. The other reason for so much defense is the crap gear I am forcing right now. Dropping Flesh and Stone for Skitterbots didn't feel as good, but could boost damage.

A couple of issues I am not sure about:

    1) Not enough EO uptime. I have self-cast Enfeeble with Increased Critical Strikes + Impending Doom support, but the game does not indicate this is supported by ICC by highlighting its socket.

    2) Ways to achieve similar results by cutting down on some cluster jewels to make things cheaper

    3) Any obvious damage oversights. I haven't decided if stacking curse effect is the play here, and I've opted not to do that since its only ever a couple percent per passive point. See thoughts on wither below. Besides Despair and -chaos res to nearby enemies from ascendancy, there's really not any other way to reduce enemy chaos resistance (Hunter helm I assume is expensive early in league). Wither is the only way I know to increase chaos damage taken (Malediction too but can't scale?). The other damage scaling is fire/burning damage, fire DoT, ignite duration, of which there are plenty of different places to get that. PoB suggests that added chaos damage on initial hit isn't the play compared to fire/burning damage buffs.

    4) Is lvl 4 Stone Golem worth it? Other options? Chaos Golem?

    5) Ailment immunity would be nice but I don't see an obvious way to get it.

    6) any other thoughts!

As long as Blackflame remains in the game and pretty cheap, I think this is a pretty viable league start.

Extra Theory and ramblings for the interested:

The way I understand it, the reason this build works so well, especially on uniques/bosses is that the reduced effect of curses is counteracted by Doom gain and the fact that damage is scaled by Wither, since burning damage is taken as chaos damage. Wither does not have decreased effectiveness against any monster type. Also, we can safely assume that Wither is at max stacks because it does not expire while the enemy is ignited and we also get increased Wither duration when going for 20% increased Wither effect on the Corruption notable. We get wither from Occultist ascendancy, Withering Step, and Wither Totem for back up. So, fire/burning damage modifiers boost damage that is "dealt" up front while low chaos, wither, and Malediction boosts damage taken on the back end (up to 124% incr chaos damage taken). Also ignites last a long time due to temp chains.

Self-casting Despair, in theory is stronger because 40 doom will increase its effectiveness by 40%, but in practice having to cast, blast, then cast again is clunky. At most it gives another 10% incr damage taken from an extra -4% chaos res. I will play with this more. There is a version of the build that uses Anomalous Flammability for 50 doom and being able to trade Combustion for Hypothermia + Skitterbots, and that might be where this build ends up in its expensive form.

I've seen temp-chains on blasphemy, but tried it and didn't find it necessary for mapping since its smooth already. Temp-chains on blasphemy is slightly more defensive and turns mapping into a 1-button experience, so its definitely an option if you can get a hold of Solstice Vigil. This leaves a gem slot for Flesh & Stone, so its a preference thing.

I don't take Doomsday because things just move around too much. With mobs on temp chains along with other defenses I can usually run around for the 1.44s it takes to reach max Doom and not have to worry about where I placed the hex, and I can spam Hexblast right after applying curse while mapping which is plenty of damage.

With a curse on hit anywhere in the build, that curse will be the one we self-cast since it is automatically reapplied when Hexblast hits (using Enfeeble now). While do-able, Despair or Vulnerability on hit are sub-optimal for DPS since a high level gem has higher curse effectiveness; going for enfeeble or temp chains on hit is preferable.

We can do most map mods including reflect. The only one that doesn't feel good is ailment avoidance for obvious reasons. Its "doable" if there's no other option but you have to spam the heck out of Hexblast to get an ignite to stick.

I might drop Profane Bloom for Vile Bastion for more comfortable bossing (stun immunity), but I love those pops.

How to start doing valdo's rest? Which build do you suggest?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 03:23 AM PST

Basically, the title. I really don't know how the atlas has changed till now, got a arc build in ritual league(which i quit playing 1 months ago) because i got bored without a strategy to play the game. Valdo's rest farming seemed cool and not troublesome but don't know how to start?

I guess i need watchstones. Can i get a budget build recommendations to get watchstones? Non summoner, and maybe a build that can farm the harbingers + get watchsones? That would be perfect. Thanks in advance, any kind of information or guidance is appreciated.

Found it. but would like to finish it, any ideas what build it would be best with (maybe cold bv?) should i add influence to it and what would be best suffixes for it.
Tnx in advance to anyone who bothers to reply.

    Noob looking for help

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 12:00 AM PST

    Hello,

I'm a new player and trying to play a Blade Blast build from Zizaran.

However I've just reached act 6 and my damage feels so bad.

White mobs need 5+ hits to die, which feels really bad atm.

I've started out, as stated in the build, with ethereal knives. Just now have i switched to Bladefall and Blade Blast combo. Damage has never been great but manageable, but now it's just not possible to do a ritual in a decent time.

    Here is a pastebin: https://pastebin.com/CJe5A7YY

If you have any advise for me, please do.

Even if it is another build to try out that is maybe a bit more straightforward than this.

    Thanks for your time Exile.

Here's my entry on "Do it all" builds - EQ Max Block Gladiator

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 06:52 PM PST

I love to see posts asking for "do it all" builds because not only do I get inspired, I know that the builds I love are the kinds of builds that "do it all". I don't necessarily like having a dedicated farmer or a dedicated bosser....rather just have someone that can do a little bit of everything.

I think bleed block gladiator is probably the coziest build I've ever played once geared up to a moderate level (e.g. mediocre rares in ever slot, no cluster jewels, nothing special..).

Anyways I'm a big fan of Steelmage and he turned me on to gladiators and I guess watching enough HCSSF streamers turned me on to SSF so this guy is 100% SSF and has done all content outside of The Feared and Delve bosses. I've done...

    • T16 100% Delirious w/ Kosis and the big dude
    • Simulacrum 20/20 w/ Kosis and the big dude
    • Shaper, Elder, and Asstree
    • Ooba Asstree, Ooba Elda
    • A8 Sirus
    • Maven

For the sake of honesty I am a really shitty and lazy player so I pretty much just play 3 button builds if I can so I dont have to focus on rotations or managing my skills while trying to not die. I wont lie the T16 100% delirious was a pain in the fucking ass and not worth it as I didnt do it deathless. Pretty sure I've done simulacrums where I died on wave 20 and ones where I survived deathless. I've facetanked my shaper beams and shaper slams and died. I am a relatively new player so Uber Atziri fucks me hard because of the above (you know, being a lazy shitty player). Same with Maven because I have Keto Brain without being on Keto. Aka I am just a dumbass. I've failed more Uber Atziris than won, same with Maven. Definitely a mechanics thing and not a survivability thing tho.

Before I give you the PoB I'll tell you what I learned.

    • Levels and a 250 - 300 p dps axe can carry you to red maps, if not t16s
    • Bleed block gladiator without uber lab feels like you are missing a limb. You play without max spell block which feels really shitty or you play without bleed explosions which feels really shitty
    • A really shitty 250 p dps multimodded elder weapon with the 100% more bleed dmg makes end game bosses like Elder, Sirus, and Shaper feel a lot more comfortable.
    • A really good multimodded (400 p dps+) elder weapon makes end game bosses feel even better
    • Armour and life on block is a huge boon for survivability since we dont get a lot of damage REDUCTION, just a lot of damage mitigation.
    • Building relatively tanky (200%+ increased life, soul tether, etc) means you can brainlessly map...which is what I love to do.

    Here's the pastebin

    https://pastebin.com/suwiRXrE

Clearly you can see that besides my axe which I rng'd a god tier jagged fossil, all of it is basic bitch and is obviously ssf viable. Ive been trying to get a corrupted soul forever now.....but what can you do....ssf....

Best mapping build on around 100ex budget

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 02:40 AM PST

Hi, im currently playing winter orb occultist, and while it is very fast it is also extremely squishy without hh stacks (even with sometimes).
I was thinking about building a cold BV since it appears to be the op build of the league, but there are so many variants that I cant choose.
What I would like is a very fast mapping build (especially legion) and that also doesnt struggle too much in survivability against metamorphs, maven encounters, legion generals etc.

I also have a pathfinder and assassin over 90.

Having trouble with Maven Boss phases - looking for help

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 02:38 AM PST

I have killed her twice already, and the fight itself is not that bad. But I lose way too many portals in the Boss phases in between.

Maybe I was unlucky the last 3 times, but I Feel like no matter what combination of bosses Spawns, there will be atleast one that just fucks my shit up.

I am doing them with my Cospris Assassin, but I do have another Character that is better defensively but worse offensively. Being SSF, i have to consider resources before attemtping to change a character, which is why im looking for help here.

    CoC Assa: https://pastebin.com/EwLf7Zm1

    Perforate Champion: https://pastebin.com/4ZG4pBBG

The Assassin has great gear, but maybe I shold go for just 1 Cospri and a Shield + Glancing Blows? I also cant really squeeze out more Life i think. I would love to have like 5.5k life, but it seems impossible. Id have to give up my Amulet, Ring and Helmet, which would decimate my damage. But I feel like bursting Maven down seems like the best way to go. So sacrificing Damage for Life might not result in a better fight.

Would appreciate some help alot. Also, if you have Build Suggestions for Maven, bring them aswell. I can gear up some other character aswell.

Sources of non-DoT chaos damage in the game vs player?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 02:03 AM PST

I am pondering upon Misery Everlasting Cluster jewel notable which seems pretty decent for chaos DoT builds.

With 4 of those (which is realistic to get if you get 2x Large clusters), one would reach 60% chaos damage against DoT which would free up a nice 3-4 suffixes on the gear.

Only thing which bothers me.. I don't know if there is any actual significant chaos damage HITS from the mobs in the game?

    Your thought/experience?

Help me figure out how to build around this bow please :)

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 01:59 AM PST

Other than the actual build itself, what can you plan around for a SSF league start?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 07:15 PM PST

What i mean is things like div cards or crafting a significant piece of equipment, more specifically approaching SSF and SSF buildmaking holistically. May not be the best reddit to ask this but i think this all ties in together with buildmaking in the end. Seems like every build i try to make is viable enough with like life and 2 resistance rares for gear, hovering around 800k dps.And that to get ahead of that in SSF i need to get lucky or craft...which historically at the end of a league i blow all my currency and am stopped dead when i blow ~1.5k alts trying to get a single specific mod to show up on an influence base, so how can i have the best possible start?

    Here's some examples:

    • +3 bow: Farm for 6L bow div cards, alt spam +2, mastercraft/beastcraft +1 for +3. CA/TR/EA/EleHit can all use +3 bows. This was the start of thought process in making this post, I was thinking i could make ele hit totems but thought about the threshold...then i figured EA totems would be better than tri-ele hit and realized that non-crit totem sucks with EO and farming a 6L. I did test on craft of exile and consistently get +2 bow gems in like ~125 alts.

    • Lioneye div card farming: Lioneye items are all pretty good. Bleed Bow is pretty popular, Lioneye Shield for Spectral Shield Throw seems ok. Seems this card is reasonably farmable.

    • Build staggering: Make a fast-but-shit build to get to maps and spin the wheels of RNG with a generic loot filter until you get the basic pieces of a more single target focused build or one really good item like a prophecy/league unique or a nice rare foil and go from there...all the while adding pieces to the fast build to get it off the ground.

    • Generic Ele Slayer: Can start with something like frostblades or lightning strike until you drop like an Oro's or Debeon's, even a Fidelitas' Spike or Hyaon's fury or really good 1H rare. Slayer's Generic Crit, damage and leech stuff can take you into red maps easily enough. Sucks in the end though because it seems GGG took a shit on crit multi, to the point where you'd almost rather go non-crit in SSF without a few crit multi jewels or a plan to get crit multi.

    • Heist: Engineering and Perception are pretty great for SSF, Perception can give void cards and all the prophecies you get can just give out randomly great shit, including earlier access to uber lab with all the dream trial prophecies. NOT something you can target farm, but something to be aware of.

Anyways, im just looking for more of a 'plan' to go into 3.14 with, i typically play attack builds as my experience with spells in the past is that they don't (didn't* at least) scale as hard as simply using any attack skill with a fast, high crit weapon with added lightning and wrath...but then again so much has changed. In 3.13 i went with phys impale slayer at the last second (no planned PoB/tree), got two wasp nest and a viper strike threshold in T1 maps, winged a viper strike build (again no real tree planned) and got a HH the first week of Ritual (from bestiary), cruised thru the atlas and quit because my bossing sucked and overestimated the power of viper strike single target...felt pretty bad to zoom thru maps and then just being a very melee heavy character with mediocre dps and half-assed builds kinda sucked. I stopped at the first Sirius fight (my first sirius) beating him on the first try with every ounce of skill i had...and with 1 portal left. Then i just had no desire to play anymore because i beat the game by getting a HH and know any subsequent build i'd make would use it. I hadn't played PoE since before uber elder came out and wanted to test my mettle in SSF. I guess i could've migrated the HH and continued, but besides getting the HH i had ZERO luck in getting anything...so many chance orbs on triumphant lamellars, one exalt in the ~2wks i did play and no real good items other than maybe the Essence Worm, Chains of Command, Dancing Duo prophecy and the two xoph runs i did from netted me the ammy+blessing.

I know PoE is just layers of RNG, but if you have any info/tips/tricks that can help shift the odds in SSF it'd be most appreciated. Currently my plan for 3.14 is to make a shitty-but-zoomy build lightning strike build, stop in Boiling Lake A9 to farm random unique jewel div card (is this even a thing thats a good idea?) and hope for the best after a few tries, with the goal of getting the dual strike mace threshold or glacial hammer threshold and farming atziri for the mace...the only thing i really learned (well reinforced rather) is that strike skills targeting a nearby enemy + overlapping AoE is very potent for clear. I initially wanted to try to farm Maligaro Glove div cards but after booting up PoE and not getting a single card in 30 Northern Forest A7 runs i decided that it wasnt feasible.

Switching from Vortex Occultist to BA Elementalist?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 01:03 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm thinking about respeccing from Vortex to Burning Arrow. My current Char: https://pastebin.com/5KYMn3yW

The Idea I saw is this one: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/3046589

I could buy the budget Version for about 10-12ex I think. Vortex is nice because you just run and everything inside of the vortexes dies. My main problems are, that only inside the vortexes I do any damage and if I go faster, theres quite some space inbetween them. And the defences of the build arent that great, especially against something like the 10 boss invitations(I'm not so good at dodging).

Would the BA Elementalist result in a better character? The Ignite spread just seems super nice to have und the damage seems to be great to. But I never play a char only with mitigation and without block or dodge... Does someone have experience with the squishiness of the build? I dont want to play a glass canon... Next problem: Only 10-12ex cost if I step a little down with the clusters and get mediums with Blowback and Burning Bright instead of Blowback and Cooked Alive(DPS los of about 3% but about 10ex less) so I dont think this should be a problem...

    Replica Trypanon (Always Crit Berserker)

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 03:30 PM PST

    Replica Trypanon

Hey guys, been working on a PoB to make use of this weapon for a while now and I've settled on something I feel I can share. Curious to receive any feedback on it. PoB is (now) configured for Shaper resists, no Vaal skills or Onslaught (from on-kill boots) https://pastebin.com/AA9Cv16y

    • All attacks with Replica Trypanon always crit, so we free up passives not needed for crit chance

    • It has a huge accuracy penalty, but with Effigon amulet blinded enemies can't evade, and with Flesh and Stone's sand stance nearby enemies are always blinded

    • Berserker naturally inflates any build's damage but the main reason for it here is Blitz charges, max Blitz stacks are normally -160% crit chance but that doesn't affect this build so it's much stronger

    • Multi jewels

    • I'm using Flicker cos fun after testing the blind does NOT apply before flickering to an enemy, flicker is unusable. I've edited the PoB to use glacial hammer for now, it has high damage, is "true" melee so benefits from the blind, and comes with 60% cold conversion so I could swap the cold conversion watcher's eye to added cold and freed up a glove prefix for % melee damage. Also swapped farrul's to explode chest

    • ...but you could use any other melee skill too. I'll be testing different ones next league to see which feels the best in practice.

    • 100% phys>cold conversion between glacial hammer and tree passives. You can do fire instead (which actually uses Effigon fire pen), or any non-conversion skill with an extra watcher's eye and glove prefix. Only reason I'm currently staying cold is that cold exposure is much easier to apply through Frost Bomb than fire exposure through Scorching Ray. I'll experiment with fire conversion with Molten Strike / Infernal Blow but for theorycrafting cold seems fine for now

Items are just copied from trade. Tried to keep it at a reasonable price (e.g. no triple multi jewels, no level 6 awakened gems, easier to make rares). You could definitely push dps higher but I feel like this is a good achievable level

So yeah, would appreciate feedback / let me know if I missed anything. This obviously isn't as good as other meta melee builds but it's a fun use for a niche item and if my PoB's all in order I'll try it next league / come back with a showcase

EDIT: DPS is actually 17mil with glacial hammer enchant on abyssus but I've reached max pastebins in 24 hours. You can also run 1-2 winter burials if going glacial hammer, 1 is probably amazing for clear (might not even need a melee splash gem swap), but not much point in 2 imo cos winter spirit is good dmg-per-point with this tree even if you overcap on conversion
