[Poll] Help shape the future of poe.ninja builds #2

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 07:41 AM PDT

Back in May I wrote a post outlining some of the options for increasing the build diversity on https://poe.ninja/. Since then a Time Machine feature has been implemented but build diversity is still a frequent request. So I am back again to get your expert opinion.

There are several directions to take. The question is which one?

    A. 20000 Builds of the Day

    • Every day 20000 new characters would be searchable like the current build page.
    • It would be characters taken from the trade river, not the ladder.
    • The characters can be diversified according to some parameters (trying to balance out ascendencies, level buckets, etc). If you like this idea, please provide some feedback on which parameters you would prefer.

    B. Showcase build page

    • Players would be allowed to submit their characters to a list of 'Showcase' builds. They would be searchable like the current ladders.
    • There would be technical limitation on the number of characters searchable at one time, so the list would periodically be trimmed.

    C. [Your brilliant idea here]

    • One question I get asked, is why not just increase the number of characters on the current build page to 100k? The answer is, that the number of characters increase vastly every level you go down. This means there is both a technical limitation but also a rate limit on GGG's API. I encourage you to brainstorm with this limitation in mind.

Looking forward to your opinions and ideas.

Measuring Success and Fun in Path of Exile and Looking at the “Item Philosophy”

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 09:19 AM PDT

Before I undoubtedly create a (please, non-toxic) discussion, I'm going to start with some context.

    1. I love Path of Exile and have since the first day I played it.
    2. I don't get to grind like crazy and play 12 hours a day (after work some nights, and weekends when I have time and am not traveling is my schedule)
    3. I don't play "currency of exile" and fracture the same map over and over again even though my mapper and bosser are capable of handling 100% delirious maps. (More on this later)
    4. I'll say this humbly as possible, but I'm sure I'll catch some heat in the comments regardless. Every league I end up with good to excellent or better items whether we have harvest crafting or not. Usually on multiple characters depending on how long I play league. ALL of which are self crafted.
    5. I have carefully and thoughtfully considered both sides of the Harvest arguments all 4 times it has come up. (First was start of Harvest when everyone was getting all reforges, second when it was canned, third when it came back reformed this league, and now, of course)

Now that all that is out of the way, here is where I'm at with the recent announcement. My biggest problem with the manifesto is not the nerf, I do think a nerf is needed for Harvest on some level. But it is more the item philosophy that I think GGG has completely lost sight of and the quest to crafting or acquiring them.

For an average-good player, a good item is probably going to look very different in a crafting league vs in a "slot machine" league. If I do an awakener slam in a crafting league, I'm going to remove add until I say "wow this is nearly perfect". If I'm playing in slot machine league, I'm going to do an awakener slam, hope I hit a big life/es roll and craft a res and be done. Or hit a res or two with open prefix to craft life/es. That's a great item. I don't even take the time to buy a better one or remake it, because I literally don't need to or want to. That item is good enough for completing the goals that character sets out to do. If I get lucky on my first slam, my progression into a "perfect item" (for me) is done! I'm never questing for the perfect 6x t1 item. I truthfully don't care if I get it. But if I can? I most likely will chase that goal down and do it.

In short, crafting actually can take longer in harvest as opposed to slot machine league. For the average-good player, anyways.

On the flip side, you can get extremely unlucky and "brick" these crafts multiple times. This can cost quite a lot of currency. And many players do not want to play "currency of exile". It's just facts, I see it in my Guild. I see it in other guilds. I see it with my friends, old and new.

For the sake of the argument, let's agree that at this point, anyone who knows this game even a little bit knows how to make a viable self-poison or self-curse map farmer and generate dozens of exalts in one play session. And with enough currency, you can slap together insane gear with or without a broken crafting system. It's just facts. So with some unlucky results in your slot machine crafting, you will essentially be forced into "currency of exile", and running the same map base 20 times in a day if you want to awaken orb a chest together 5 times before hitting a "decent" one, rather than doing 1 and working on it over time. (By the way, I've done both literally dozens of times, and the finished result feels just as rewarding both times)

Looking at this, I find that it is far more damaging to the replayability of Path of Exile to have players running Tower or burial chambers or whatever map you choose for almost an entire league, than it is to let players create "gg" items for their builds every league. Some players on PC have multiple mirrors and aren't even awakening level 8. Think about that for a second.

So here's where players like myself, and many others come in. Many of us don't want to run a map over and over again, clear it in 3 minutes, and loot it for 7. And maybe even die if we missed a pack along the way during the clearing potion. That is literally just boring to me. My profit mostly comes from lucky boss drops. And strategized and targeted farming. Maybe from selling an item I've crafted/replaced on a character.

My fun comes from doing this, not watching my currency tab fill up. My success is measured not by currency, but by how well my characters are running. Is my mapper chain-one-shotting entire legions? Cool. Is my boss killer doing the hardest fights in the game deathless? Even better. Here's where I truly measure success though...

Is my off-meta, self made dream build that was never possible because of the limited crafting tools in path of exile able to complete the endgame? (Worth noting: these are the builds that keep me crafting and playing in crafting leagues. And I would never attempt them without a targetable crafting system. And yes, my self made 100% lighting conversion cyclone occultist is coming together right now.)

It's easy to throw together a busted proven build, but to troubleshoot and craft for your own weirdo meme builds takes FAR more patience and time, and the end result is far more rewarding IMO.

It's not "how many headhunter buffs can I stack while speed clearing this map and can I break even with my fractured fossil purchase?" And I'm someone who LOVES to play with a headhunter. It's fun, after all.

Some people call playing the way I play "inefficient". And honestly, they're right. With the new exploited quasi-endgame of PoE being self-curse or self-poison, 100% fractured map farming being fully capable of earning many players as much currency in one map as I average in an hour or two, those people are right. But that isn't FUN to me.

Considering the item philosophy, GGG will essentially be forcing a lot of new crafters away from slowly working on items, and straight into this style of play to compete with "currency of exilers", or suffer and carry on through leagues with less superior items and remain "priced out" of the fun.

So GGG, if you're reading, the average player who just wants to go in, kill bosses, make weirdo builds and enjoy the game has no interest in farming 200ex to make or buy the perfect item.

We aren't playing to make perfect items and see how many mirrors we can put on one currency tab. We are playing because we love the game you created. Cool items are merely a bonus. They will never determine whether we are "done with a league" or not.

If you read this far, thank you ✌️🤘

EDIT: Most of my points probably sound redundant, in fact they are. But really my point is I don't care, I would prefer it to be there to do fun off meta stuff at league ends, but the sad reality is most players will be stuck in this lousy cycle of fractured mapping and farming currency to get their busted items. And I think chain running the same fractured map base is much more damaging to the game than quick progression to "perfect items".

Just died lvl 88 in Ziz Event. It was a blast, thank you very much!

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 06:57 AM PDT

I just want to say thanks to everyone involved making this event. It was so awesome to see that many people giving it a shot. I personally had an absolute blast with it.

I played a ton the last days. Made it to lvl 88 with my Bleed Gladiator and was pretty confident. Had 78/78 Block, 7.1k Life, 77/76/76 res and 55 Chaos res.

Didnt really have many close calls at all, but then Harvest slapped me hard with a barrage of what seemed like a hundred projectiles :D

It was a really fun ride constantly playing on the edge, having to pay attention all the time.

Looking forward to more events like this. And I wish everyone whos left a good time.

edit: I just learned that I have to keep my character in standard for whatever reason to have a chance to win something. Well, I didnt know that because it wasnt mentioned anywhere (at least I wasnt aware of it) and I deleted my character. Well, fuck me

Dear GGG, please introduce anti-MTX effects MTX item that disables the effects of skills for me only so that I can buy them and play without my brain becoming fried

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 12:42 AM PDT

The visual noise is terrible. If I play with a couple of friends, then my brain gets fried and can't see any monster effects below my feet. Can't react to anything and RIP all the time.

I work 8 hours a day and my brain is already drained. Trying to play PoE is a tool for me that allows me to relax and process thoughts and stuff that were carried out through the day and zoom into inner calmness in a way of meditation. But some of the effects, stutters, frame drops, inconsistent particle distribution, absurd vertex overley, wrong layer multiplexing and small buffer transit, it is impossible for me.

This causes a lot of stress due to visusal effects. it is too much for eyes and brains to handle.

Once my friends turn on a couple of MTX effects on their chars and skills, the whole screen is a visual particle fest and it overrides monster effects as well.

I am playing an ARPG. I should have a milisecond or 2 reaction time. Not everyone does have nano-second reaction time.

Either introduce lowering the skill visual effects or create an anti-effect MTX which can be bought so that I spend money and have peace while playing can play it visually calm.

/edit: I wanna clarify that I don't care how this option is implemented and I deem it worth paying money for. It is something I would deem very valuable for me. Because the amount of sheer stress it would prevent and joy it would add. I am not advocating this to become a paid option. Warframe does it for free at an extent that it also affects bought skin and their effects. I don't care how, but I want it know. Visuals are just too terrible for me as they are now.

Idk about everything else people talk about on this sub but I beat Death and Taxes yesterday

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 09:32 AM PDT

Basically title says it all. I've never made it to red maps before and prior to this league had only beaten one conqueror (Baran) but this league I've beaten three conquerors AND atziri (why so many titties?) AND just yesterday managed to defeat Death and Taxes (don't ask how many tries/deaths.)

While I'm bragging into the void I also got my very first exalt drop yesterday in a nutty heist. Bummed I skipped that league, it's a dope mechanic.
