Project PoE Wiki Search - A browser extension so you never have to land on Fandom againi

    Hello exiles,

We wanted to share another small development in the Wiki space with you all, and we hope it will be a welcome one. We have just released a browser extension called PoE Wiki Search, which is available for Firefox, Chrome, MS Edge and most chromium-based browsers completely free of charge (duh!).

    How it works:

1 - It allows you to quickly lookup anything in our wiki by simply using a shortcut (ALT+W), typing up your query in the window which opens once the shortcut is pressed, and hitting ENTER. This will take you to the search results in the wiki, or if your query has only one logical resolution - directly to the page of your result.

2 - It automatically redirects your browser requests from pathofexile.fandom.com to www.poewiki.net without you having to do anything. This means that if you google for something like poe wiki contagion and the first result is from fandom, clicking on it will instead take you to poewiki.net for the same page. Which means you can say bye to the fandom wiki and not think about it anymore.

What are the implications / is it safe?

This is a very simple extension, you can review the code inside of the official repository. The files you should look at are src/background.js and src/ui/ui.js, where almost every single line of code is commented with what each line will do. We want to be completely transparent here and assure you that:

    • No data from you or your system is collected; We aren't interested in this.
    • No information is stored anywhere.
    • No tracking is employed.

This is why we didn't bother minifying the code or otherwise obscuring it. There's no need. It's not a large extension and it doesn't even benefit from those practices. On top of this, if you are curious about what it does in very over-simplified terms -- it is this:

When you click on a fandom link, the browser prepares the HTTP(S) request and since the extension has told the browser it is interested in any request with pathofexile.fandom.com in the name, it will tell the extension that it is about to send this request to fandom and render the webpage it returns back to us. Instead, our extension says the request should be directed to poewiki.net and the resulting page from the new wiki should be given to the user instead. That way instead of - pathofexile.fandom.com/w/contagion you get poewiki.net/w/contagion and this all happens behind the scenes and without any user interaction needed. This also works if you simply paste pathofexile.fandom.com/w/contagion into your browser's address bar.

Updates / Future releases / Contributions

This extension was really just something we came up with as an idea to see if it could be done. We've never really made one before, it seemed simple enough (although making one source work for a lot of browsers is a bit annoying due to some browser API inconsistencies), so we made it. With that being said, we do not plan to make more changes to it in the near future if it just works. However if anyone finds a bug, we will do our very best to fix that. As for feature requests and further dev work - we cannot see this growing beyond what it already is, unless someone has an idea that we really like. Otherwise if you want to contribute to the code, just fork the repo and send us a PR.

If you want to change the extension hotkey

You can change the ALT+W key combo, however this isn't surfaced very well in some browsers.

    • Firefox: Click the hamburger menu (three horizontal slashes) at the rop right of the browser window, choose the Add-ons and themes menu item, then when the new window opens, click on the settings cog icon (top right of the page itself, not the browser window) and choose Manage extension shortcuts.
    • Chrome: click the browser menu (three dots), then more tools and then extensions. On the top left of that page there is a burger menu, click that and choose Keyboard shortcuts.
    • Edge: click the browser menu (three dots), select extensions, on the left hand side (below the search box) click keyboard shortcuts.

Below is a short video demo of the extension's functionality:

    It just works.

Credit goes to u/pm5k for developing this.

As always, if you want to keep up with our work, help or report bugs; find us in Discord: https://discord.gg/UUZmHaAwHq

Everything we do, including the extension, is open sourced under the Project PoE organization on Github under a GPL3 license, here: https://github.com/Project-Path-of-Exile-Wiki

Thank you to everyone who is supporting us on this journey, it truly means a lot.

    Hello, everyone!

Here's my notes for the recent cast with Ghazzy, Grimro, Tuna and Chris Wilson!

There's been a lot of information given over the nearly 10 hours of airtime between all the casts, and I sincerely hope all of these notes have been both informative and helpful! It's honestly been a blast working on these.

I've done my best to summarize all of the major talking points and have taken some liberty in clarifying the more technical questions/answers into plain language. I'm hoping this will help some of you connect to the information and feel informed, especially if you cannot dedicate the time to listening to the 3 hour episode due to work, family, or otherwise.

I think we have an imposter.

Hopefully meaningful message to GGG - People play Path of Exile until (they want to/get bored).

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 09:13 PM PDT

At first, I really couldn't understand why GGG seems to be very much against power spikes, because they constantly introduce OP items, starting from elder/shaper influence, to conqueror, awakener's orb, then even elevated mod. and THEN GGG wanted to address power spike, but instead of actually touching the "real power spikers", they hurted average players much more by tackling support gems, and as a result, didn't really nerf high end players at all, because the real spikers still remain strong.

From baeclast, podcast, etc, though, I got the feeling that GGG really wants us to constantly play Path of Exile, and that they potentially want to achieve that by letting/having players have to constantly upgrade gears - but in other words, this is no different from GGG actually wanting players to always be unhappy about our gears. - thus always wanting to upgrade.

    related post :

    https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/p6scb7/combatting_power_creep_vision_vs_reality/

The philosophy seems to be clear enough - every upgrade should matter (thus items "should" scale in exponential way )- because deminishing return might discourage players to upgrade, so let players constantly have space to have "good upgrades", and if relatively "bad gears" can still kill Maven, players might call it for a league, so maybe just kinda forcefully make players grind more for same power by nerfing base power - expecting more playtime.

Despite "lowering the ceiling, but actually giving slightly more base power" seems to be much healther and reasonable way of addressing power spike, they didn't. If I can think about it, GGG also can. All these nerfs and grindiness that doesn't make much sense for solving power creep, were clearly intentional, because they just had different goal. Power disparity was never their problem, power creep was also not a problem at the top end (which sounds very ironic) for them. They simply didn't like an average experienced player killing sirus comfortably. This is why they hate harvest so much too.

I get the point - but the truth is, players just play until they're bored with the league, and come back when the new league starts. It's time to admit that Path of exile is very much league based now, and that majority of players potentially have their own goal in mind (whether they think it or not), and only play when they have hope/desire/motivation of doing so. Yes for vast majority of players this would mean at most 1-1.5 months of grinding into calling it for a league.

This "bored" happens when players are attracted to nothing.

Let's take a look at "not a noob but maybe not hardcore either" player, who would probably kill something like A4-A5 sirus once, with average of 1-2ex per gear. What happens is :

    1. OK, I've achieved my reasonable gear and power of 1ex per gear, and killed A4 Sirus. What do?
    2. I guess I go for A8 sirus and try watchstone and juicy stuff like those streamers? man, that sounds like a lot of grind for now though, idk..
    3. What can I do immediately? maybe gear upgrade? let's see... well, my next gear upgrade is 10ex each....
    4. Guess I'll stop playing.

This one little guy is not attracted to anything at the moment, and will call it for the league, and probably will comeback 2 months later. What would have motivate and keep players like this guy, at this point, would be something like :

5-1. I can actually try different gear at something like 2ex? I guess I can try that, will maybe play slightly more! (compare this to non-super expensive sidegrades, that plays differently like cospris - carcass jack - cloak of defiance, or shavs - ivory tower, pledge of hands - +3 staff, etc. not necessarily limited to unique items, just things like inpulsa-explode chest, reflect immune chest vs 10% more damage chest, as long as they're kinda side-grades. )

5-2. That lightning warp trap build looks really interesting. I should try that maybe, and I have the currency to support OK gears, lemme do that, gonna reroll.

5-3. Blighted map? that looks fun and rewarding. I just need to buy maps! there are plenty, lemme try that.

The Key feature of "keeping" players with "non infinite PoE stamina" are :

    1. Sidegrades that function differently/in interesting way; not strict upgrade that requires excess grind. GGG has been very constantly hurting in this regard. see : elevated mod.
    2. Some gimmicky build, or maybe even meta build that really attracts you; this used to exist a lot prior to GGG starting to archtyping builds. 3.15 nerf drastically reducing "attractive build" hurt this aspect quite a lot in single patch, resulting in giant player drop.
    3. An Immediately interesting content that player actually wants to play without having to excessively grind in order to do a single fight of it. Unfortunately, besides things like blighted maps, lot of things are hugely gated behind massive grind or miserable trade experience.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/pgqjpd/why_finding_things_through_luck_is_not_a_better/

Path of exile doesn't lack in upgrade at all - Literally 99.99% of players in Path of exile always will have room for gear upgrades. Maybe even 100%. However, Those mirror-gear posting players are not average. Not every person wants to have/grind for that kind of gear. If there's gigantic grind ahead of you, People simply just get demotivated, thus get bored.

Behavior that I've just described - the 1ex gear player - is probably much more closer to what "average experienced PoE players" is. Yes "real casuals" even fail to reach yellow maps. I'm not even talking about real casuals.

Typical experienced players stop because they are not motivated and their realistic goals are out of reach, or they have nothing interesting left to do in their sight. GGG, if you think players quit because they're too happy with their character early in the stage, it REALLY IS false. Please step out from the philosophy if that's the case.

The direction you're going, is trying to set a long road that players should follow through, instead of various shorter, but interesting paths that players could choose to walk. No, the long path doesn't make players play your game for longer. At MOST for a one time. After that, they'll just quit, ESPECIALLY because Path of Exile is being played as a 3 months league game. They know the long ass grinding will be practically voided after, and if the grinding is long there will be no motivation to do so.

You're constantly archtyping builds, you're constantly adding more "upgrades", instead of "lots of interesting sidegrades", that players can enjoy the most within the 3 months window. Please stop, It's time to look around. Various "starter builds" are interesting because you get to try one or two of them every 3 months. Your "farming strategy" is interesting because they can be always different (or same, if you want to be). You can try various builds and keep playing poe even through the same content. This is all happening because it's a 3 months league game, where people expect a fresh start for their maybe-short, but enjoyable journey, not a forceful, grindy long path.

Your idea of "archtyped, forced long playthrough, items rarer, many upgrades but not much sidegrade" fits much more for standard league. I can see how "hard mode" can be a really long, hard and actually super fun game to play, if it were in standard (it really does, actually, I'm up for standard hard mode if it comes out) but Path of exile got popular for league based game and that's what players expect, and that's what players came for.

It's a great game to look back every 3 months and that's what players have been doing. New league for Path of Exile was always something, because players always had hope of being able to do various interesting and new things, whether it's new skill/league mechanic or something that the player never could have tried before. However I'm afraid this trend might stop if you're constantly forcing players/gate interesting content behind ridiculous amount of grind. It's definitely not endless, excess grinding that i'm looking forward to do, when I hear about Path of Exile new league.

This average-experienced 1-2ex per gear player, has a probability that he will not even start the league at all, because he knows enough about Path of Exile that if GGG made the "grinding" longer, he can't stand it, and might as well just not start at all. This I suspect is what happened in 3.15, because people were already kinda borderline bored with the grind anyway, but the patch just made it about 1.5 times as long.

As much as you guys hate harvest(and I can understand why, I won't necessarily say you should buff harvest), but harvest is actually really healthy as in how every players could actually "attempt to upgrade their gear, whenever they have about 1-2ex" instead of having to endlessly grind. It's not even the "deterministic" part that feels good. It was a feeling that you didn't have to wait for your next 10ex to even attempt to upgrade your gear (as a 1-2ex gear player I mean).

Please, stop going into the wrong direction. Please remember that Path of exile is practically a league based game right now, and with leagues being 3 months, lots of sidegrades, various things to try, many meme builds, many goals to achieve within the sight, are probably the way to go. Forcefully making players take one/fewer long determined route, will very surely impact game in a negative way.

on a side node : In all honestly, financially too, "multiple path" I'm sure would encouarge players to purchase more mtx. I never thought of purchasing storm call MTX until vaal storm call build became viable in 3.14. Would never have thought of it if I skipped 3.14 and came back for 3.15.

edits : are mostly typos / and some minor fixes that doesn't change context as much

Interviewing Players That Feel Their Thoughts Aren't Accurately Represented

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 09:33 PM PDT

So my first attempt went like this Episode 01 which for maybe obvious reasons I called the Ethical Cast

So why are you doing this PT? and why posting it here?

Players are finding themselves more and more in a position where their feedback isn't heard, the nature of a podcast is often to collaborate audiences to signal boost for the benefit of all creators involved; but within our community it means the opinions that are already established will simply be reinforced. I just want to hear from the perspectives that have concerns/praise and do not feel that their particular concerns/praise is expressed.

The reddit can be excellent at criticism and I wanted to know what you felt I could do better because even if the scope of the project remains small it is an important one to me to give it the best attempt I could. Though understand I won't be in a position to have video of the guest due to ability of them simply showing something intentionally to get my channel and content banned.

TL:DR - a little project to hear the opinions not expressed and I need your help making it better

I wanted to share my appreciation for them trying their best to give the community a worthwhile discussion about the game. I felt that the streamers were slightly awkward and abrasive at times, but they were definitely polite and respectful for most of the podcast. Ghazzy pressed for context behind Chris's answers so that there could be a meaningful discussion if something needs to be cleared up. Grim gave a lot of insightful feedback about softcore trade. Tuna's mic was scuffed, so I felt that he could not talk as often as he wanted, which was a shame. When he talked, he brought up many interesting points as well. And thank you to Chris! Thank you for talking to the content creators and representing the decelopers.

I hope I am not a minority in feeling this way. Keep doing what you guys are doing, and thank you.

What was the best allround build that felt like a good compromise between efficiency and fun in 3.15? I still fail to find mine.

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 07:21 AM PDT

Hello, like the title says, Im interested in your experience, opinons or tips. I played various builds with various budgets and there is always something I hated about it, so please share yours!

There is a list of my builds. I might add pobs later, but I dont have these anymore. The budget was from smaller to bigger with every build generally. Keep in mind that these builds could be better with very high investment or I actually did something wrong. Dunno. I played these builds and I this is how I felt about it:

AWC chieftain (https://pastebin.com/zvpLqWS6)- league starter, kind worked for that purpose, but it was just way too sluggish for end game farming and I hated the delay and how badly it performed against mobile enemies.

BV poison occultist CI (https://pastebin.com/s8r9Bp3c) - felt decent at start, but later on, juicier content randomly instakilled me and end game bosses I had to facetank were horrible. I felt like not having max block and recovery and rely on mitigations isnt good at all. I felt like I hit a brick wall with efficient scaling.

CoC bow voltaxic burst + rift inq - oh god this was awful. That ability is just mechanical garbage. Im sorry. Very specific gearing (voltaxic rift as your end game wpn), lack of scaling options, low dmg and a delay on top of that. I can see some niche uses as a support ability, but never a main ability. Avoid!

CoC EoW inq bow - felt super smooth, fun, explody, fast, but a bit too squishy even with 5k life + 3-4k es. The reason I gave up on that was not enough budget to fix these issues early in the league and I hated (I still do!) that expedition remnant cannot crit, that still is not marked as special build ruining mod like e.g. fire immunity. The lack of visibility of such important expedition mods almost made me quit the league altogether. It could work with a good budget imo.

SST raider eternity shroud - felt good in lower content, but juicier packs were horrible. It has a target cap, so thats the reason I quit it. I have billions of dps, but I still need to cast it 3 times to kill a white pack that has higher number of mobs due to pack of any explosions. I didnt have 20ex to get shaper +5 proj helmet enchant, so it might help a bit with it. Dunno, maybe somebody can give some feedback about this enchant.

CoC Forbidden Rites occultist CI (https://pastebin.com/n59V89jD)- This felt good in general. Tanky, decent clear, explosions, just great. The issue was that bosses like maven witnessed double guardians or maven itself made them so tanky I felt like my damage is not good enough, probably due to lack of penetrations for chaos hit builds. I had to give up explosions that make the build half of the fun. It worked decently for everything outside of Maven or Cortex. I just felt lack of visual clarity for FR and ripped so many times due to lack of seeing the danger that I couldnt stand it anymore. Maybe Im just bad at Maven, because I hate the fight, but the fact that I couldnt see shit through FR visuals (e.g. the balls covering your entire arena permanently), was a pure melee made me rip 2 sets and I rage quit the build. Not sure if the visuals can be fixed, but I believe it might be a decent build with good enough budget.

Self cast Forbidden Rites occultist pc stacking (https://pastebin.com/HwrZJgSR) - It was fine. Decently fast, good defenses, but you also did dmg to yourself, so mediocre tanky, high damage, all round felt good. Expensive. But again, the visual clutter was horrible and there was a content like maven, feared or expedition bosses in dark rooms, I failed due to not seeing anything and I rage quit that. Dunno if this can be fixed or you just need good enough gear not to care about mechanics.

Mana Bond hiero with Ivory Tower (https://pastebin.com/WCvHzyey) - felt good in lower content, but later on, expedition had so many mods I couldnt run, like culling, extra phys as chaos, all dmg bleed, all dmg poison, lightning immunity...I started hating it, because while it had good damage, it wasnt consistent and it wasnt exactly tanky. It felt like you either faceroll the content or you corpse run it. Ivory Tower is something I will probably never do again. Too many clunky mechanics that work in like 90%+ cases and I hate when it procs and hit the 10%, where I felt hopeless. But somebody else told me he facerolls everything, so dunno, maybe I missed something.

EoW self cast occultist ll pc stack (https://pastebin.com/S1uUJJpB) - probably the best boss killer I've played, but clearing feels so bad, because I just run faster than my deadly frost bolt, that makes me die due to rushing into a pack too fast. Also the ability is delayed, slow, cant go above rocks, walls, fences (hello fellow sparkers), has a cap to how many enemies it hits, so juicy maps are horrible experience. I put tons of currency into it and it feels ok allrounder, maybe good starter, before you get all the tailwind shit. Its painful to have overkill damage, but you still need to cast it 3 times to kill a big pack due to its target limit. It feels great, when you phase a boss with a single good setup of EoW and the boss is stationary, but all the expensive gear I have feel wasted since its clear is too slow.

These are the build Ive tried. Either not enough clear, bossing power or too annoying expedition just ruined my experience with every single one of them. While I kinda like expedition in general, I rly wish they did not destroy certain builds in certain situations and instead just make them less powerful. Skipping or avoiding content isnt fun or challenging to anyone.

What are you thoughts, experience or tips?
