It is time to address the rare item issue.

    Posted: 23 Jan 2019 08:28 AM PST

I love ARPGs and I love finding cool loot. But as Path of Exile has expanded over the years, it has progressively become less and less about finding great stuff and more about finding crafting materials. High ilvl stuff went from somewhat rare (due to limited high-tier map availability) to common as high-tier maps have become sustainable. Various league mechanics were folded into the game creating loot explosions of more high ilvl rares than anyone with any sense would ever identify. Then Shaped and Elder items arrived. Then came the Delve and Betrayal crafting options which exacerbated the problem to absurd levels.

Repeatedly the bar has been raised for what qualifies as a good rare due to power creep, but dropped rares have not kept pace. They have increased quantity, yes, but not in quality.

Now let me make this clear, I don't think good loot should be more common. But all the time I spend identifying and assessing rares (and I identify a ton of rare items) feels like a complete waste. It feels this way because it almost certainly is.

I know it is not an efficient use of my time to pick up every yellow pair of Sorcerer's Boots but I still do it because I am either a glutton for disappointment or have a bad case of dumb brain. I want the pleasure of finding that 1/300 chance of getting something that can be sold for a handful of chaos rather than vendored for alteration shards. I really want the rush of identifying that 1/10000 case that's worth multiple exalts (how sweet this is when it happens). Maybe I will be an extremely lucky boy one day and hit the 1/100,000,000,000 lottery and find something potentially mirror worthy from an identified item (but who am I kidding, I haven't even found a mirror in my 6000 hours).

Identifying items is fun, there's a reason why it has become a staple of the genre. And while the item filters are a great tool for hiding obvious junk (low tier item bases), filtering out all rares because they aren't worth the time it takes to identify them shouldn't be the most efficient way to play. When you explain to someone new to PoE that 99% of rare items that drop aren't worth the time it takes to identify them, and experienced PoE players tend to not pick up any rares besides jewelry and maybe some Foils/Claws after the first week of the league, they are perplexed. They wonder, then why do SO DAMN MANY drop? And it's a good question. Certainly there's an element of inventory management meant to slow down the pace of the game, but when the the cost/benefit has swung so far in favor of not picking up anything something has gone wrong.

So with all that said, I'd like to propose a multi-step solution:

    1. Reduce the amount of weapons, armor, and jewelry that drop somewhere in the neighborhood of 50-75%. No changes to the drop rates of currency, cards, etc.
    2. If #1 affects Shaped/Elder drop rates, proportionally adjust those so shaped/elder bases drop at approximately the same rates. Shaped and Elder items will probably have to be exempt from #3.
    3. Proportionally increase the occurrence of higher tier affixes and sockets on dropped items only so it doesn't have any effect on crafting. For example, if item drop rates are reduced by 50%, the average quality of the affixes should be increased by 50%.
    4. Proportionally increase the rewards from vendoring rares and vendor recipes involving rares. This would include the Alchemy, Regal, Chaos, and Chance recipes. The Exalted Shard recipe will remain unchanged since Shaped/Elder items will drop at the same rates.
    5. Edit: And credit to participants in this thread: Perhaps the addition of some drop-only affixes that are not possible to acquire with crafting (similar to how Fossil's have those juicy -9% nearby enemy element resistance) would further incentivize identifying items.

This will largely solve the issue for me without upsetting the status quo. The time invested into finding a good rare will be the same, but the act of identifying a rare will have double to quadruple the chance of being good.

There's an argument to be made that if a lot more people identify rares of every good base we'll actually see a flood of good rares on the market. This might be true, so maybe GGG can juice the numbers a bit by reducing the items that drop by half, but making the average quality of the affixes only 40% better rather than 50%. Anything to help preserve my sanity, plus it would let the game run a little better.

So I leave it to you, Reddit community, to discuss. I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks about this and if there are any better ideas to address the problem.

Finally beat Shaper in SSFHC, I don't have any friends that play so I'm gonna write about my experience here!

    https://i.redd.it/ewjee0f176c21.jpg

First try ever, too. I'm aware it isn't that amazing a feat, but it's a nice feeling. Been playing casually for a couple years, and I almost always delete my ripped characters so I never practice tough encounters in standard, which I'm aware is a terrible way to play the game. I'm just gonna ramble for a while about my experience with the league!

    Here's the POB: https://pastebin.com/YtiD5yqk

It's your standard BV elementalist. Shaper DPS should be about 400k or a little under, adjusting for correct shock effectiveness. I ripped a few characters this league, 2 other bv elementalists, 1 bv chieftain, and 1 ngamahu ascendant (who died to syndicate in blood aqueducts for some reason). I was a bit frustrated with the league mechanic so I took a hiatus, then realized I was only 7 rings away from a loreweave so I figured I may as well try once more. Other than the loreweave, the gear is really average.

Been using the same amulet with 75 life and no other relevant stats since level 30 or 40. I had shaper/elder ping pong on my shaped toxic sewers for a while so I ran 50 or so of them and wasn't able to get a shaped or elder amulet. I spend a lot of time delving too, hovering around 270, and I would tunnel-vision jewelry encounters fishing for a shaped amulet, but no luck. I have a terrible shield with aspect of the spider from fortification Jorgin, haven't found the beast that opens a portal to Fenemus yet.

I use a multi-modded claw (thanks The Web) with one useless prefix for endgame encounters, and while mapping I use a shaper mace with the explosion mod and crafted spell damage/extra chaos. I was even able to annul it down to just the explosion mod after 3 tries, but I can't multimod it as I've found ZERO exalted orbs the entire league (one 94, one 93, and two 92's), which is super atypical as I usually find 5 or 6 per league and blow them on nonsense like jewels most of the time. I've found 4 annuls and 8 divines, for what it's worth.

Got a warlord's mark ring with no other meaningful stats and crafted life, which I used for the endgame encounters, but normally I use an opal ring and curse on hit enfeeble with herald of thunder, relying entirely on boots and atziri flask for leech. Speaking of boots, I just found out recently that bubonic trail's death walk consistently deals enough damage to trigger both ice bite and innervate consistently, allowing me to free up a decent amount of mana reservation on herald of ice so I can fit in aspect of the spider. Death walk also reliably triggers onslaught, so I could swap out my searching eye jewel for a decently-rolled hypnotic as well.

As for the tree and gem choices, I've never understood why more people don't use the second duration cluster. Winter orb builds use it, but I see no reason not to use it for BV as well, as the QOL is absolutely massive for very little point investment, and you also get some cheeky resists from the pathing as well. I map with conc effect for the extra damage, and the radius is still massive with a level 20 BV. I also have shaper mace explosions and herald of ice for pack clear, so it feels really smooth all the time, despite herald of ice being unlinked.

The scariest part of of working my way through Zana's quest line was definitely the Eradicator. It was the closest I came to death. I was super nervous about the elder guardians, and since they seemed to be more about technical play and less about dps, I did a simple 2 gem swap to Winter Orb (Physical to Lightning into Winter Orb, Blade Vortex into GMP) for all of them so I could move freely. Worked out really well, as they were all really straightforward kills other than my near-death to Eradicator. Swapped back to BV for the elder and he was an absolute cakewalk with 400k dps.

The build handles t16 syndicates just fine, though I've had a couple near-rips to Tora despite having somewhat decent chaos res. I think my main complaint about the league mechanic is that the damage can feel really arbitrary at times. All my deaths this league have been to the syndicate, and while I'm assuming they were resultant of dangerous item combinations, it just feels difficult to prepare for. I can easily clear t16 syndicates with damage mods on map, but every once in a while a t11 or t12 syndicate member on a map without damage mods will almost one-shot me. It's really strange. I'm just going to keep playing this character until I inevitably die to the syndicate again, and then maybe try a cold occultist and try to take down uber elder.

I am a verified idiot that turned in 1,000 sets of the gambler (data in thread + proof)

    Posted: 22 Jan 2019 04:52 PM PST

To start this off, yes, I did really turn in 1,000 gambler sets.

    PROOF: https://i.imgur.com/y0QtAqQ.png

I first emptied my entire div card tab so that I'd have correct data at the end of the turn-ins (pictured above).

Some answers to questions you might have:

    I did not get a nurse/doctor/fiend card.

It was not profitable at all, I would have made more money selling the gambler cards for an alch each.

I would certainly not recommend you do this yourself unless you like pain and being disappointed.

The first 500 cards were self-farmed running shaped maps. After that, I created an aura character and ran with a guy that did burial chambers and tower maps with a full squad of people and used gilded divination scarabs. I would get anywhere from 10-50 cards per map depending on if monstrous treasure proc'd.

It took me about an hour to turn in every set and my fingers hurt after the half-way mark.

I've taken a bit of time to add up the total value of cards that will sell for > 2 chaos each (I've decided to not count any of the <=1 chaos cards since I didn't get full sets or they would not be worth selling).

    VALUE OF NOTABLE CARDS BELOW
The total value of all notable cards that I got is somewhere in the neighborhood of 250-300 chaos depending on what price I could sell the cards at (there's somewhat of a range when it comes to certain cards for whatever reason).

So, just to put this in perspective I definitely would have lost tons of money if I had bought these cards (not to mention the misery I would have gone through buying them). If I sold the gamblers for 1 alch each (a value I've sold them at before in bulk) I would end up with 5k alchs. 5k alchs in chaos (let's be conservative here) is ~1500 chaos which is about 9 exalts worth. By turning them all in, I essentially would have lost 7 exalts had I bought these cards. That is terrible.

If you've got any other questions, I'll try and answer in the comments.

Next we'll go over some of the notable cards that I got (over 10c or somewhat rare):

    Card Count
    The Sephirot 1
    The Wolf 1
    The King's Heart 1
    The Cursed King 1
    Last Hope 5
    The Throne 2

    Last Hope 3
    The Breach
    Last Hope 4
    Last Hope 5
    The Professor 2

Some other mildly interesting information about these turn-ins was the frequency of certain cards that I did not expect:
