[Discussion] The game's viewport and the zones' visibility does not match the clearspeed meta.

    Posted: 19 May 2019 06:12 AM PDT

After playing D3 for a while on the new season, I began questioning some things that bothered me in PoE. This one is mainly about visibility ingame and how it affects the gameplay.

When playing D3, I was mainly looking at the envionment itself to find out where I wanna go next. Looking at the minimap is only neccessary in some situations.

When playing PoE, I look at the minimap 99% of the time. Enemies are hard to distinct anyway and zone pathing / layouts are hard to see aswell. Now I think this is because of the relatively small viewport and due to washed out zone graphics, e.g. walls blending in with the ground to make it almost impossible to see where you can go.

This problem unfortunately gets worse the faster your build becomes. You need to plan ahead and playing without Minimap is impossible. Your oppinions on that?

Can we move the 6l recipe somewhere else?

    Posted: 19 May 2019 11:23 AM PDT

Over the last couple leagues (betrayal, synthesis and flashback), I've three times come to the point where I have 1500 fuses ready and not found yet the 6l recipe because it's gated behind RNG. In the past, I would wait til I hit lvl 8 with Vorici and then use the recipe to get my first 6l of the league that way, and then proceed with fusing luck for the following ones.

Unfortunately it can't be done anymore, and I either have to wait an undefined amount of time (no progression whatsoever and you cannot influence it) until the game decides I'm finally worthy, or gamble fusings.

I REALLY hate to gamble, it's not funny at all to lose what, 50-100h worth of farming to a roll of dice ?

Can we get this recipe moved to something like killing shaper or uber elder... at least somewhere the progress is measurable and you can somewhat influence it? As is, it serves no purpose at all.

My favorite part of a new league is when this sub gets really active again

    Posted: 19 May 2019 08:16 AM PDT

This is by far my favorite sub to browse, on account of it being about my favorite game.

But end of league, there aren't a lot of posts beyond item showcases and beginner questions. It's especially slow during a bad league (I don't remember the sub or game feeling this empty, but I only started playing hard on 3.0).

Can't wait for everyone to come back from "spring break".

If we can't solve Betrayal lag, why not eliminate it?

    Posted: 19 May 2019 12:07 PM PDT

GGG wrote in their post about Betrayal lag that it was a result of having 3 encounters in the same map. Since the order and alliances in the board can change within a map, they have to load every single file and create the Intervention event in the moment...

So then reduce the number of encounters to 1 per map? Compensate by adjusting intel gain and rewards per encounter, e.g. in the amount of veiled items. You can even extend the monster-killing part of the warehouses to adjust for exp gain or similar.

The concrete details about compensation don't matter, they know better. But this solution would actually fix the lag, since there was none during Betrayal, and it should be very easy to implement apart from balancing. Thoughts?

    Should GGG change bandit rewards?

    Posted: 18 May 2019 08:14 PM PDT

We have only 2 good options, Alira for crit builds and 2 points for all other builds (there are few exceptions and also few players prefer Kraityn's speed but I'm saying in general) . What rewards you think would be more balanced? Is it better to buff other 2 rewards or to nerf good ones?

Started playing in Bestiary and I finally managed to reach Uber Elder and downed him first try!

It's definitely the furthest I've advanced my atlas in a league. I only managed to die twice, the second one was to desync unfortunately.

The ring I got and the build I used https://pastebin.com/jRLQyZSD.

This was also the league where I managed to kill shaper deathless, though I'm not sure if that's much of an achievement compared to the first time I did it with an Elemental Hit Scion last league. This is the first time I've delved into chaos conversion of any kind, let alone a spell build. The damage has been surprising me all the time.

    Thought I would share! :D

Map overlay and clearspeed meta response: How D3 addressed this issue

    Posted: 19 May 2019 12:40 PM PDT

This post is in response to this thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/bqgstn/discussion_the_games_viewport_and_the_zones/

about the map overlay, minimap, and how much we see on screen. In this response I will talk about the issue as I understand and experience it, how I believe D3 addressed it, and leave it open to discussion about what the best solution could be to preserve PoE.

My experience is that once a character gets fast (efficient) enough, the distance we can see in front of our character becomes limited to the point that we are spending more attention to avoiding objects than we are killing monsters. This pushes us to use the map overlay full time because:

    A) It shows us more information about our distant surroundings and therefore, where to head to next, and;

    B) What monsters we are killing matters very little, but whether we are going to hit a wall and waste time matters a lot

In essence, the player's objective ceases to be killing monsters, and rather transitions to environmental obstacle avoidance. The proverbial 'stuck on a pebble' problem. My question then is, *is this the optimal user experience?*

If not, then how do we improve upon it?

Now, I think D3 tried to change this player experience with one major idea shift: Instead of the players having to move from point A to B, why not move point B to the players? They implemented their rift system where once a threshold of monster kills was reached, the boss spawned on the player.

    Now, I am not suggesting PoE become D3, or even copy this idea. Rather, I think we should ourselves some questions, such as;

-If every direction on the map was an equally valid way of moving, could we rely less on the map?

    - If there were no environmental obstacles, and we could encounter monsters by infinitely moving in the same direction, would it be engaging?

    - How does the experience of Delve move us in the right direction?

My short answers as yes to the first question and no to the second. Delve I think may be the best example we have of middle ground. I believe Delve addresses the issue by giving us the mine cart to follow (we now know which way to go) and essentially holds our hand to point B. We don't get stuck unless we *want* to get stuck, and we are even incentivized to do so! Going into the darkness, and abandoning the hand holding gives us the experience of playing with less map reliance and triggers all the right positive player responses for us. Personally, I often turn the map overlay OFF when I run into darkness!

So does all this mean that I am now an infinite delve fanboi? Not totally, because I still enjoy the experience of leveling a new character through the Acts (and have for years, through 3 diablos and PoE), but I do think that the gameplay of Delve is an improvement for addressing a core problem of the game: the map becomes the focal point of engagement and the game itself becomes the background. If infinite delving is not the answer, what is?
