Trading: from the perspective of a trade site indexer - poeapp.com

    Posted: 23 Jun 2019 07:42 AM PDT

I have seen a lot of misinformation being posted lately and wanted to share my perspective backed up with some data. On our end, we are capable of indexing quite a lot of items. In my graph below, you can see that we're cranking through quite a few items every single minute. In fact, I have quite a bit of headroom to handle even more. Unfortunately for us, the Trade API has a serious bottleneck as we enter peak hours each day. This is actually represented in my graph below:

Indexed items over the last 5 days.

The peaks in that graph represent player off hours. Yes, you read that correctly. There are fewer items being pushed through GGG's trade API when the majority of the player base is active each day. Because of this, the indexers receive stale data which could be minutes or even hours delayed.

The problem is not that trade sites are over capacity, it's the data feed that we are consuming does not have enough throughput. I hope this helps everyone understand the problem a bit better.

PSA: You can overwrite incubators without the warning message popping up, if you aim at the gem socketed into the item

Personally after 3500 hours I feel the trade in PoE is so bad that i think trade bots are actually more reliable than real players

    Posted: 22 Jun 2019 06:06 PM PDT

When i try to trade anything from the "bulk item exchange" page there is like a 90% chance of the person i message to not respond in any way and im almost always trading with bots, which even though i dont like it seems to be better than trying to get a real person to trade with me.

Tl;Dr trade bots seem to be better than player trade

Price fixing and market manipulation are the worst Ive seen in years. Even poe.ninja is not reliable anymore since the fixers have figured out a way to affect the average price.

    Posted: 22 Jun 2019 03:20 PM PDT

I first noticed this a few days ago when my beginner friend was trying to buy a carcass jack. He said he messaged the top 20 listings, and not a single person responded. I didn't beleive him, so I tried myself and it turned out he was right. the cheapest carcass was 5c, but only when i got into the 15+ area did i get a response.

this is even more of a problem with build-enabling items like lioneyes jewel. here is the listing: https://www.pathofexile.com/trade/search/Legion/yYdWhR

notice the top few listings are 40-50c? well i found a jewel and listed it at 60c and was insta-spammed by 20 different accounts. so i go back to the listing and message these top 10 jewels and, again, not a single person is responding to me. i then priced my jewel at 90c and then started getting spammed for 90c...

even poe.ninja, which was previously the best way to combat price fixers, has somehow been affected.

    https://poe.ninja/challenge/unique-jewels

you can see here, lioneyes was rising, until yesterday when it took a big dip. the average price says 50c right now, but i went down the list of them on the trade site and the first guy who responded to me was over 100c.

this also happened with serrated fossils yesterday.

    https://poe.ninja/challenge/fossils

as you can see here, it shows the average price of serrateds at 8c right now, but if you go to the trade site: https://www.pathofexile.com/trade/exchange/Legion/VnDmjrSp the ACTUAL price of serrateds is still sitting around 20c, even moreso if youre buying in bulk.

trade this league is in the absolute worst state ive ever seen, and i feel really bad for newer players who might be using poe.ninja to avoid getting scammed by price fixers, since that apparently is no longer a reliable source of information.

im not going to sit here and pretend to have a solution to this, but as this game grows this issue will grow alongside it.

    something needs to change.

Just want to say thank you to the creators of poemap.live

    Posted: 22 Jun 2019 10:22 PM PDT

It's just completely flipped the way we map on it's head. Done with begging and bargaining with 50 people for one map. This is such a hassle free way to trade. Just adding a ready to trade marker makes such a huge difference to the process. Got 10/10 of the maps I dm'd people for.

Is there any way to make regular trades go as smoothly? As in trading item - item instead of currency? I feel the greed for currency makes people do things like pricefixing etc, maybe pure barter is the way forward?

Regardless, a very big thank you to the creators of the website!

    Make /autoreply permanent

    Posted: 23 Jun 2019 03:18 AM PDT

At the moment when trade is too slow and you can be spammed after plenty of hours when you sold the item. It can be a good possibility to autoreply them about it. But now the state of autoreply is that it's removed after you switch zone for no reason. I don't know why? And why it can't be done like /dnd.

Can be /autoreply permanent as /dnd? It's a bit annoying write it again after you switch a zone.

Something has to be done about trade BEFORE 4.0

    Posted: 22 Jun 2019 04:49 PM PDT

This might be a bit extreme, but IMO, if trade stays the way it is right now, 4.0 will be dead on arrival.

Every single league, without fail the complaints about trade get worse and worse. At some point it is going to hit a critical mass where the downsides and bull shit hoops people have to jump through just to get the items they need and to play the game will outweigh everything else the game has to offer.

    Current trade issues:

    1. Public trade indexing sites being overwhelmed leading to items being listed for hours after they are sold.
    2. Private indexers seem to be back. (There seem to be a lot of differing opinions on this, but I figured I put it in here as something to consider)
    3. Countless 3rd party tools required to make trading bearable. And yes I am including pathofexile.com/trade in this category too. IMO, anything not in the game client itself is 3rd party. I'm tired of having 4 tabs, 3 macros and a spreadsheet open just to play a god damn game.
    4. Price fixing
    5. Language Barriers
    6. Trade etiquette and culture differences (Looking at you Korean players who spam me 3 times with a WTB message, invite me to a party, I decline, and you spam 3 more times)
    7. Getting trade messages while in long duration encounters (lab, rotas, etc.)
    8. Low value, high volume trading is awful. God forbid you need a bunch of fossils or essences to craft the item you need for your build. I hope you have 3 hours set aside to trade.
    9. Currency exchanging is almost exclusively run by bots. Honestly, I don't see this as a downside with the current state of trade because these bots actually respond. Trading currency is one of the easier things to do at the moment. Just look for the dude with a few thousand of what you need and 99% of the time it's a bot and you get what you need pretty easy. But...I could see how others may not like this especially if trade ever changes.

I'm sure there are dozens of other issues people could point out but these seem to be the biggest, most painful problems with this games current trade system.

I do not proclaim to have all the answers to these problems as I'm not a game dev...but I don't see many ways around these issues that don't involve some sort of auction house...

    "BUT MAH PLAYER INTERACTION!!!!"

I know GGG has this philosophy that trading should be hard and there needs to be interaction between players...but this stance is simply out dated and will not work with the size of the game. There are simply too many people playing PoE now and there are too many different languages and cultures colliding for this to be realistic.

I like to think of it like the stock market. You don't see every person wanting to buy some Microsoft stock walking up to Bill Gates and politely asking him if they can buy 3 pennies worth of the company. No...because that's insane. What in-fact happens is you go online, and you push a few buttons and it just happens.

I've played this game since closed beta and I really don't want to see it die but every league I find myself playing less and less not because the new content is sub-par or there is nothing to do, but because I can't be fucked to jump through the 28 hoops required to just play my character.

Edit: Ok so many people are trying to insinuate that the only solution to these problems that people like myself will accept is a straight up D3 style instant buyout massive AH. If you actually read what I wrote, that just simply isn't the case. I said that I can't see or think of a solution that doesn't in some way, shape or form include some form of buyout system. If GGG or someone else out there can find a better solution, by all means. More power to you. I just can't see it.

Flesh and Stone is the new Enfeeble?

    Posted: 23 Jun 2019 05:40 AM PDT

I just wanted to thank the designer of this gem, it is awesome and worth to use for the Sand Stance alone. The two things it does

    - create an AOE where all enemies are blinded, which gives meaning to even the smallest amounts of evasion

    - give you a less damage taken % on all damage from outside the AOE, including boss, legion or other offscreen attacks

Its 25% reservation over 35% for a blasphemy Enfeeble. Both on top of each other cost 60% and that is, in my humble opinion and having lost only one char so far in Legion HC due to this setup, a pretty powerful defense even on its own.

I have so much more fun playing HC with this. To be honest, its even the opposite: It would be really hard to play HC without it for me, to be honest. It has gotten much harder this league.

The increasing complaints about trade makes me think that people don't know how to trade, and it makes trade worse

    Posted: 23 Jun 2019 09:41 AM PDT

First of all, let me say that I obviously know that there is some problems with the current state of trading. The API being slow has a lot of negative consequences, there's price fixers, market manipulation, scam attempts..

But the horror stories we read here ? People having to dedicate an hour of their evening to trade ? Or the ones considering playing SSF without liking SSF for the sake of avoiding trading ? What am I missing ? Of course there's some truly awful situations, but they are edge case like bulk fossil crafting, and Synthesis bases crafting last league. You shouldn't have to put that much time into trading to enjoy the game in a trade league. And by "enjoy", I mean progressing, completing your atlas, farming sextanted T16, farming Uber Elder...

So let's talk about cases for which you need trading, and how to do same with the least amount of pain (Of course, I'm by no means an expert, so feel free to expose better solutions, I'm just presenting mine since my experience is already painless compared to what we read here):

    • Converting currencies: We all at several points wanted to convert unused currencies into chaos or ex, or restock things like chisels or sextants. And there's two methods that allow to do this relatively easily. The first is to plan ahead, and be the one setting the sell order. Want to buy chisels ? Sell chaos with a chisel price ! Works way better if you don't do it at the last moment. Of course, avoid being the cheapest since it'll get you spammed. A good trick is to ask yourself "Considering the seller list, who will end up being contacted, even if the API is slow ?" while considering things like the other sellers stock. If the first 15 sellers have each less than 5 chaos, you can consider they aren't here. The second method is to simply buy but from people with a huge stock. If someone has 3569 chisels, while being 8% more expensive than the 17 sellers with 20 chisels each (remember that the API is slow) that are before them, do you really expect an answer if you contact those 17 sellers ? Last detail to consider for both solutions: do not trade small amounts of currencies, you lose time and you reduce your chances to find someone wanting to trade. Always convert at least 10c worth of currencies at the strict minimum, preferably 20.

    • Completing the Atlas: It's a no-brainer: use poemap.live. You probably heard about it here, and it's for a good reason. Completing the atlas become really easy with it. To optimize things, try to appear with multiple trades at once, but not too much to avoid not being able to follow the requests.

    • Buying individual maps: Don't. Why would you want to do that ? If you're chaining that map, buy some dozen at once, you'll find easily someone wanting to trade 300c worth of maps. Farming T16 or Uber Elder ? Poeapp works wonders to do that but for multiple maps. Wanting to reduce the inequalities between each map base in your stock, without running the maps ? Horizon (or buy a bulk of you have one really lower than the others / sell a bulk if you have really too much of one) if T16, 3 for 1 at a vendor if lower than T16. Unless you have enough to sell a bulk (but you'll need to find someone wanting them, I'm not sure you'll find someone wanting to run 37 Reef), it's better to transform them to a better map than waiting to sell 8 maps at 2c each.

    • Buying rare (yellow) equipment: It shouldn't be a problem. Of course, that too good to be true offer is probably already sold or unlisted, but that's it.

    • Buying unique equipment: If it is a popular item, ignore too good to be true offers, think to look at when the item was listed (if you see 10+ listed in the last 5mn at the top of the list, they probably are all sold), and it shouldn't need more than an handful of whispers. If it is an 1 alch leveling item, too options: you are twinking, and pay a premium to find someone willing to sell; or you are at your first character of the league, and you shouldn't need to do that. You can, of course, but the game is still perfectly playable without.

    • Selling something: One simple rule: if you don't imagine yourself interrupting the flow of your map to sell that thing at that price, don't try to sell it. That's it. Of course, I should add that underpricing is a good idea only if you don't manage to sell your item at an higher price, since else it'll end with you being spammed.

That's all from the top of my head.

And why am I saying all of that ? It's obvious: The more people are trying to complete trades by contacting way too much people or doing in multiple trades what they could do in one, the less trade works (too many requests on the API which slows it down, people ignoring each other, etc...).

I hope GGG considers regional pricing some time soon.

    Posted: 23 Jun 2019 09:37 AM PDT

I dont know how to reach them and haven't seen anything from them saying "We will never do regional pricing" but im really getting to the point of begging now.

In legion i've actually started playing the game properly and i love it, i think its one of the best ARPG's on the market, but the MTX store is extremely expensive for me.
I live in Turkey, the TRY to USD conversion is 5.82=1. I am willing to give 60 liras or even 80 for this game every month, just because i love the game and want to support it. But even the 30 USD Supporter Pack costs 174 TRY.

I feel like regional pricing can only make GGG more money because people in a country with this kinda shitty economy will be willing to pay if the price is not 1/4 of their houses rent.

I know that some people in USA or even European countries with good economy think they would be getting cheated because people on the other side of the world is paying less for the same thing, but please try to empathise with us. This is not about fucking over the rich people, or making a stance on someting. I just want to enjoy the game like everybody else but getting crippled by stash tabs and looking at all the weird and cool cosmetics the game has while sitting there in my cloth armor honestly feels bad.

And if they choose to never do regional pricing, im definetly gonna come back for every league. But i feel like, and know from my friends, Diablo 3 or Grim Dawn or any other ARPG where you just pay the 60USD price (well Grim Dawn is indie and on steam so it actually has regional pricing which makes the game 40 TRY) up front to get everything in the game gets a leg up against POE in my country.

The current state of trading reminds me of desync in 2015

    Posted: 22 Jun 2019 07:11 PM PDT

Kind of a shower thought I suppose but, the current state that is trading in POE feels a lot like the desync issues did from years ago. At the time, POE was hard to recommend to new people. I remember the first time that I introduced a D3 buddy of mine to POE way back in open beta. He was having fun until the first time he ran face first into a pack and thought he killed everything only to be teleported back to his actual location dead. That was the last time he played POE.

Fast forward to 2019 and I got another long time gaming friend to try POE. He is an ARPG vet so he made it to mapping relatively easily. When I started explaining how trading worked in the game he was flabbergasted that a game in 2019 had to use 3rd party websites and programs in order to trade. I didn't even have the heart to tell him about the other 3rd party apps like Lab Compass, PoB, Mercury Trade, etc. He lost interest when he couldn't get the unique he wanted and quit for good.

Looking back at 2015, it feels absolutely absurd that I even put up with POE with its desync issues. It was so frustrating to RIP hours of effort because your client said something different than the server. I guess the point of this post is that I sincerely hope we look back on these days of trading, and reliance on 3rd party programs, and think "Goddamn I'm glad the game isn't like that anymore!"

TLDR: Trading blows right now. I hope trading is improved soon (whatever "improved" means I don't know) and we all have a good laugh about how shitty it really was in hindsight.

Militant Faith Keystone - The Agnostic - Is Awesome

    Posted: 23 Jun 2019 10:51 AM PDT

TL:DR - Militant Faith Keystone the agnostic creates a new avenue for strong EHP pool sustain for some builds effectively comparable to slayer vaal pact overleech running constantly. The build I made could kill shaper on a 25c budget handily.

    - I created a build around this new keystone to see if it was good in practice as it sounded on paper. It sacrifices 20% of mana per second to recover that much on your health pool until you reach full health. This effectively allows you to invest into Mana-regen as your main recovery method and it will sustain your mana and health. When building into this with a hierophant I quickly realized it makes Righetous Fire(40% more spell damage) easy to add into a build while still having good ehp sustain, and without RF on it feels as good as vaal pact overleech if not better in a lot of ways. For example with no phys reduction, I literally cannot kill myself in uber lab traps even if I try to.

Why does this build interact so well with Righteous Fire and Uber Lab Traps?

    - Traps and Righteous Fire deal damage to your character based on a percentage of your HP. With MoM and any additional damage taken from mana before life, allows us to take full advantage of our full mana regen along with any damage taken gained as mana. So with my character regening close to 2k mana per second with recovery rate and arcane surge up, im at like a 60% per second regen as a percentage of my 3k-ish HP pool is concerned which traps and RF can't touch.

    EHP

    - My current build is a rag tag of gear and non defensive optimization of my tree, and I have roughly 3.3k hp + 6k mana with 50% damage taken from mana which gives me a hit hp of 6.6k but with alittle more defensive tree + a watchers eye with 10% damage taken from mana before life while affected by clarity, the build could easily hit 4k life with a 10k 1 hit hp pool. Easily modified to be hardcore viable.

    Build Cost

    - My current gear costed me a little less than 1 ex(roughly 4 pieces I had equipped since level 20 or so) and frankly I could have still killed shaper(fairly easily) on 25c if I had forgone getting a watchers eye, and 5L pledge of hands. I forgot to record audio on this shaper kill but am too cheap to buy another set, This build almost instant phases shaper and frankly if I was a better player it probably could with using ralakesh boots to get charges before hand along with timing vaal RF with shaper fight, but haven't done shaper too many times so my timing was garbage.

    here is the video:

    Shaper Vs The Agnostic Hierophant

If enough people are interested in the build, I will try to make a more fleshed out build guide for it. but for now here is the pastebin: https://pastebin.com/JMhFJLEC

This is the 6th or 7th league, that i am about to quit for the same reason. Wasting hours until i hit a trade bot.

    Posted: 22 Jun 2019 07:39 PM PDT

    As the title says.

I like the game, i like spending all my game time on a fresh league but PoE is still my secondary game. Its my backup game.

Sure i will play 6-12 hours/day (RIP sleep) if i can the first days, but after the novelty fades its always the same.

Try to play a few hours, waste 50-60% of it trying to trade, end up frustrated, exit game.

Repeat for a few days, quit league because apart from Aul there isnt anything i havent done that justifies trying more.

If i want to dedicate 2h to PoE, 2 weeks in and 1h is spent trying to find the currency bot to flip into chaos to buy some maps to do the elder quest finally and for the whatever time..

Only to end up leveling a new char to not have to deal with that instead.

Man i burn out from trading.

    Edit:

Some heavy assumptions that i waste 50% of my playtime trading every single time i play is stupid, be realistic, i know reddit is an echo chamber of white knight wannabee streamer pros but ..Use basic intelligence.

I am just saying that wasting time in a game in 2019 to do things that should be basic mechanics for a RPG/MMO/ARPG is getting tiring.

Done it for the last 4 years since i returned for Perandus after the release, and its getting exhausting, not because i dont enjoy the game but because every other day i might want to trade the farmed currency into actually tradeable things (Chaos/exalted) to buy whatever upgrade i want or to craft.

The fact that in 2019 it can take me up to 1 hour or more to do a very basic RPG mechanic is simply getting unacceptable, when the league is fresh and i want to play 10h a day, i dont care spending 30mins+ trading, but when after 2-3 weeks i only dedicate 2-3h/day, sometimes more because i want to level a new char, and the game gets all fresh, but then..

Wasting 1 hour to, skip price fixers, skip the first 30-50 because its probably already sold, CTRL+C/V the next 50 people because the API is mega slow and most of them already sold hours ago again, repeat to number 50-100, is not fun and i would rather quit the game than even bother to do it once more, for 4 years in a row.
