Lore compilation update for 3.8 - Illustrated Edition

    Posted: 25 Oct 2019 09:40 AM PDT

Here's an update of the complete lore compilation for version 3.8 of POE. For those unfamiliar with the lore compilation, the original post can be found here.

    Complete Lore Compilation (PDF)

In this edition I added over 180 images illustrating the characters and events being discussed. Personally, I think this adds a whole new dimension to reading the lore, and I hope you like it. Please note that I cannot promise future editions will have images as it will likely be significantly more work to upkeep the document with them included. We'll see.

    Lore Changes

    • Added new lore from Legion League (very little).
    • Added new lore from Blight League (very little).
    • Tracked down the original source of some old lore from pre-1.0 that is still valid, and added it (more details below).
    • Corrected the year the player is exiled.

    Original Game Lore

Doing deeper research into some of the original POE lore, I came across the following (someone from GGG feel free to correct me if I'm wrong):

It seems that around 2009/2010 Brian Weissman wrote some original lore for the game, including backstories for many of the monster types found in Act 1. Among these were backstories for bosses such as Brutus and Merveil. These were posted on the official game website. The lore was later greatly expanded by Edwin McRae, and between 2012 and 2013 GGG removed the original lore from their website. By then much of it was outdated and no longer aligned with the current version of the game (many character stories and events have changed significantly over the years). Some of these original backstories can still be found on the wiki, though in a couple of places they appear to have been altered from the original or added to by someone else.

While the original lore was taken down and no official sources currently exist for it, some of it is still quite valid and the stories are interesting. In fact, these are the longest and most detailed pieces of POE lore I've found anywhere. Because of this, I've decided to add the ones that are still mostly accurate to the lore document. Below are notes on some specific stories.

    • The Faun: Several years before he guarded Navali's cage, and about seven years before his father Abberath was added to the game, a detailed backstory existed for the Faun. It still aligns with the current lore, so this was added under the section for Abberath.

    • Brutus: A detailed backstory exists for him that includes lore not found anywhere else, including why his hands are mangled. The story makes no mention of Shavronne and only says that he was transformed by a group of necromancers (as Shavronne was not added to the lore until later), but there are no explicit conflicts with the current lore. This story was added under the Karui section of the Purity Rebellion.

    • Merveil & Daresso: An early version of their story also exists. The main difference is that it originally took place in Wraeclast, with Daresso being a fighter in Sarn Arena and Merveil being from a town called Carian, and it was set before the Cataclysm and the fall of the Eternal Empire. Current lore, of course, has changed this. Their story now takes place in Oriath roughly 100 years after the Cataclysm, and Daresso is now said to have been a fighter in the Grand Arena of Theopolis. (A reference to the original version still exists in the game, in a line where Dialla says that Daresso lived before her time.) A few other small details, such as when and where Daresso proposed to her also seem to have changed, but these are minor. The story includes more details regarding Merveil's transformation than are found anywhere else. I added this story to their section of the lore compilation, though I edited one word to make it more closely align with the current lore and avoid confusion for those who haven't read this explanation. The change is noted in brackets.

    • Sirens and ghosts: I added the backstories for these monsters, also under the Daresso & Merveil section, as they do not conflict with the current lore and give further details about Merviel's story following her transformation.

    • Hillock: The only major story I left out was his. This is partly because his backstory has changed more than the others above and his exact origins are not crucial to the overall story of POE. In the original version, Hillock was a drunk who gained a taste for blood after a brawl and then began to terrorize his village. Four of the strongest villagers attacked and killed him while he slept and then threw his body in the sea. He eventually washed ashore in Wraeclast and was reanimated (as tends to happen there). In the current version, Hillock was a thief and a rapist in addition to a murderer, and he was captured and exiled to Wraeclast by Dominus.

Hope you enjoy the lore compilation and this little trip through the history of Path of Exile's lore!

My experience with 7 meta-type builds this league

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 11:53 PM PDT

Preface: I don't have the patience to do my own builds, so I like to follow build guides that are already out there and are likely to be pretty good. Also, I don't do a lot of min-maxing, I like to get the build to where it is "good enough", and then I generally want to move on to trying out the next build. Also, I'm pretty terrible at Uber Elder fights, so consider that when reading my comments - your mileage may vary depending on how much you maximize your build and how good you are at this fight. Keep in mind that this is written from the perspective of that kind of pretty average player.

    Cobra Lash Assassin (Lv 91)

I always like to try new builds, so I went with this for my league starter. Also tried Venom Gyre, but it didn't feel as good.

Based mostly on this Mathil build: https://pastebin.com/8Zi7Vf1A

DPS: (B+) Deeps are really good, but not top tier.

Clear: (A) Assassin speed and using Bino's poison prolif results in amazing clear speed.

Defenses: (B-) Evasion, Acrobatics, other dodge from ascendancy

Uber Elder: (C) You have to do a lot of standing in place in order to build up your poison stacks, which is not great for UE.

Blight: (A-) Good DPS and Bino's poision prolif works amazingly for Blight. Only thing keeping it from being A is the need to stand still to build stacks which can leave you vulnerable against fireball baddies.

Fun factor: (B+) This was a fun league starter to play.

Dual Nebuloch Techtonic Slam Juggernaut (Lv 93)

For some reason, I always feel like rolling a tanky player after doing a shadow character. I went with this for it's excellent defense.

    Based on this: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2589795

DPS: (B-) I realize this has some higher potential than I was able to push it, but requires a lot of investment in my opinion to get really good DPS.

Clear: (B-) Against trash it works great, but DPS and charged slams are not consistently high enough to make clearing out top tier maps entirely smooth.

Defenses: (A+) This build has just about everything you would want defensively: high regen, decent leech, great damage reduction from Nebulochs and ascendancy passives. I used this as my dedicated Delver - I don't play Delve much and have only gone down around near 300 depth, but it does everything I need it to do deathless unless I do something really stupid.Uber Elder: (?) Honestly I didn't try with this build. Should be possible if you are skilled, but you might end up with a bunch of degen everywhere making it a dangerous fight if your DPS is not high enough to quickly deal with the phases.

Blight: (C) I didn't run a lot of Blight with this, but my impressions were kind of meh.

Fun factor: (C) TS is unfortunately not the funnest skill to play with, and the clear isn't smooth enough to make it a really enjoyable play style IMO.

Zombie, Skeleton, Spectre Necromancer (Lv 93)

This was my first time since I started playing in Ambush league to really try a summoner build. And well, yeah, Necro is just downright silly this league.

    Based on this: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2242389
One variation based on a suggestion in the forum threads to put the following gem setup on a pair of Stampede unique boots: Cyclone - CwC - Desecrate - Spirit offering. This allows Cycloning at full speed while constantly giving you a huge amount of ES recovery. Really this combination makes all the difference and takes it from a great build into just completely fucking ridiculously broken.

DPS: (B+) Single target DPS not the best of what I've tried. Probably can be boosted further with Lv21 gems, Feeding Frenzy, etc., but didn't really need it.

Clear: (A-) Using Frost Sentinel spectres, the clear is really good. Didn't even bother doing GMP, opting for keeping cold pen in 100% of the time just because I don't like switching for bosses.

Defenses: (A+) Around 6k life + 4k ES (with Spirit Offering), amazing mobility through Cyclone on Stampedes, a huge amount of ES recovery with Spirit Offering triggering nearly 3 times per second, recovering almost 2k ES each time. Very rarely did I even lose all of my ES.

Uber Elder: (A+) Just to give you an idea how stupidly easy it is to kill UE with this build. The first time I ran it, I accidentally had integrated graphics activated on my laptop, making this fight run at like 2 fps with Shaper beam etc. completely invisible. I did die, but when I figured out what was wrong and went back in with the second portal, it was already more than halfway through all of the phases. Needless to say, I haven't died in an UE fight with this build since then.

Blight: (B+) Blight may be the one weakpoint, if you get unlucky with multiple unique blight mobs coming at you in top tier maps, it can sometimes be hard to DPS them down in time.

Fun factor: (A-) Pretty damn good, I honestly wasn't expecting Necro to be this fun, but the cycloning with Stampedes makes for a very smooth and fun play style.

Cospri's Malice CoC Frostbolt / Ice Nova Assassin (Lv 93)

This is an extremely popular build that I never got around to trying and now I see why it is so popular.

    Based on this build: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2285205

DPS: (A+) This was the highest single-target DPS out of any build I tried.

Clear: (A) You are shooting out rings of death all over the screen while zooming around with Cyclone = easy clear.

Defenses: (B-) Mostly life leech, Mistwalker from Assassin, CwDT - IC - Enfeeble. Also a good build to use with Loreweave, which I did.

Uber Elder: (B) Honestly, this may just be because I suck, but I didn't fare too well against UE with this build. I lost a few sets but beat him a few times still in the end. Could probably do with some more defenses.

Blight: (A+) Because of the high mobility with cycloning, you are rarely vulnerable to the fireball baddies unless you are in a straight hallway and get unlucky. It's pretty crazy just watching entire lines of enemies just completely melt as you smash through them. You do have to be careful with the unique guys in maps with crazy mods because you will be very close to them and they can fuck you up with a few slams.

Fun factor: (A) This build is extremely fun to play, I recommend it anyone who hasn't tried it yet. Hopefully they don't try to nerf CoC again.

Freezing Pulse Totem Hierophant (Lv 92)

I hadn't tried a totem build in over 5 years, and I thought this league would be a good time to try it out again.

    Based on this build: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2547296

DPS: (B+) Extremely solid DPS. My character never really achieved top tier DPS, but definitely nothing to sneeze at.

Clear: (A) Clear is fantastic. Two buttons to place 4 totems which will completely demolish the screen.

Defenses: (B-) MoM and your standard stuff from the ascendancy, CwDT - Steelskin, and shield. Nothing too memorable. Defense is a bit of a weakpoint. You are mostly relying on your ability to stay out of harm's way with the totems.

Uber Elder: (?) Didn't try with this build. I feel I would have a hard time because of the lack of defenses, though I'm sure it is possible with enough skill.

Blight: (B) It was alright, but not ideal. Probably need more deeps to ensure 100% victory in the toughest maps.

Fun factor: (B) What can I say, totem play style isn't for everyone. It was certainly fun, but totems will never be A tier for me.

    Icicle Mine Saboteur (Lv 77)

Honestly, at this point I started to run out of builds that I really wanted to play. But, I had dropped a Shroud from Uber Elder, so looking for something to use that with I found this. I didn't end up playing this very long, so I can only give some general impressions.

    Based on this build: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2638570

DPS: (A) Probably the highest DPS I've ever seen while leveling. Honestly all the bosses were erased in less than a second. I stopped playing this before ever being able to exploit the Shroud gimmicks, so I can only guess at the stupidly high DPS ceiling of this build.

Clear: (B+) It would be A tier if only the mine play style wasn't so clunky.

Defenses: (C) Ascendancy stuff, CwDT - IC. Extremely low mobility.

Uber Elder: (?) Sorry, never tried it.

Blight: (B) Working off memory, but it seemed to do OK, but not fantastic at the point to which I got the build, probably because of the work required to throw and detonate mines, it's easy to miss a branch if you aren't paying attention. Also, it's easy to get blasted by fireball baddies because you aren't moving very much with this build.

Fun Factor: (D) I really disliked this play style. Bots don't detonate mines reliably enough, so you are alternating between throwing and detonating mines. This means you don't have a lot of opportunity to keep moving. I know you can do Detonate Mines on a Spell Totem, but didn't try that.

    Bloodstorm Impale Champion (Lv 81)

Got a nice Pride Watcher's Eye from Uber Elder, so I was looking for a pure phys build that wasn't Cyclone.

Based on this build: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2558982This build is meant to use Perforate for single target, but I really didn't like it and found Bladestorm to be nearly as good. May need Perforate at the very end game.

DPS: (A-) DPS is pretty solid but requires being very close. It's melee, so that's usually your trade-off.

Clear: (B) Not enough area to be a top-tier clear build.

Defences: (B+) Build has a huge amount of leech. Opting for now to go Hematophagy on my amulet anoint instead of Vaal Pact as recommended in the build, just because I hate having no regen. May decide to go VP in the end. Again, this would be A tier, but I have to dock it some because you have to be so close to your enemies. Mobility and the ability to stay away from your enemies is a hugely important defense in and of itself.

Uber Elder: (?) Not there yet.

Blight: (C) Melee is absolutely terrible for blight. This is really a bad league for melee in my opinion.

Fun Factor: (B-) Not great, not terrible.

    Thanks for reading.

Experiencing unbearable non stop ping spikes that goes from 100ms up to 700ms in a second. What in the hell is going on with their servers? Game is literally unplayable. I'm in singapore gateway which it says is 50ms but when I enter the ping is all over the place. Aus servers have a more stable connection but the ping is constantly around 150ms. Any one else experiencing this sort of nonsense? More importantly any fixes and solutions? My connection is stable with every other online games expect poe. And I'm playing in Blight league if that helps.

[Crafting] Looking for suggestions crafting a +Trap/Mine staff

    Posted: 25 Oct 2019 09:54 AM PDT

I got this staff pretty early on in blight and stumbled back upon it in my stash. I decided to throw an annul on it on a whim and removed a suffix, so it's what you see in the picture now (it was 2 prefix / 3 suffix before).

If I wanted to make a trapper, does this staff even resemble something remotely viable? I would assume the best route forward would be to have a +2 support gems craft and use a L4 empower, for L7 empower to make for L30 trap gems (L21 gem + 2 trap/mine mod + 1 all + 6 from L7 empower). Would crafting prefixes cannot be changed and scouring to open up suffixes for multi-mod (multi, +2 support gems, crit multi, double damage) be worth it? Total craft cost before 6L is 5ex,4c. Could I find a better staff for 5ex or less?

Or are people going +3 all X gems on staff and throwing their stuff in a +2 corrupted chest or something? Or would dual wield +1 weapons with dmg mods be better? I know so little about trap/mine gearing "meta" right now.

edit I think I just realized the staff might be fucked because of its item level, regardless of its viability. It looks like a ilvl 80+ could be bought for ~20c. Would crafting one still be a good route? Or should I just go dual wield or some other shenanigans.
