Suggestion: Lower the spawn rate of random chests and increase the quality of their loot

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 09:25 AM PST

Just a thought, but I would rather be rewarded for exploring than be subconsciously pulled away from action to open the hundred bone chests that spawn in the vaal city. I understand that you have a choice to open lootables or to pass them by but sometimes it feels a bit excessive. I think the current state of the breakable stuff is fine since you don't have to specifically click all of it.

New player here, and I just recently beaten Act 10 Kitava. And, boy, was it a journey.

A lot of close calls but I pulled through.

Hi, before I start, I'd like to introduce myself first:

I'm a new player that was finally swayed to revisit PoE this last week. I first played PoE back in its early days in 2012, and while I remembered faintly how it was such a blast to play the game then, it never stuck to me because of the lackluster content. So I left and went on with my life until 2018 came when PoE Betrayal was announced. That year I was in need of a good game to invest myself into, and what better game would it be than Path of Exile when I was such a big fan of ARPGs? I was hyped, of course, especially with how massive the game grew to be since 2012. Then when I was at the peak of my excitement, it all deflated when I stumbled on issue after issue in setting up the game. I grew frustrated and just gave up. In the end, a year flew by, and now I'm here, enticed by the reveal that is Path of Exile 2, and finally playing the game in all its glory.

Okay, with that out of the way, I'd like to dedicate my first post in regaling to you the tale of Vedrick, the Wayward Templar, whom absolutely had no idea what he was getting into when he stepped foot on Wraeclast.

The first Act was an eye-opener into the game. What with the depth of the skill tree (the moment I pulled open that Skill Tree tab, I knew this was going to be one hell of a ride), the complexity of the skill gem system (sweet Innocence, imagine the possibilities.), the boggling amount of content by way of Leagues, and so-on. Everything combined made my initial impression of the game after a long time incredibly memorable.

So giddy with all these newfound information and power, I spent the next three Acts (II, III, IV) practically full-clearing each zone because I didn't know any better! All of this was done with the sole purpose of getting all those sick skill points and gems in the vain dream of making the best build ever (a massive claim, I know). And with how easy those four Acts were, it didn't really help in preparing myself in the notorious encounter that is Kitava in Act 5.

Before the Act 5 Kitava fight and even the previous Acts, I did some reading in the most basic of guides for Path of Exile. I didn't want to spoil myself the experience so all it amounted to were tips saying that I should never follow a build-guide on my first playthrough and so-on. But what stuck to me the most was how all those guides tend to emphasize greatly that Elemental Resistance is key in the game. I did what any sane man would do and of course took heed of the advice and built into Vedrick any little resistance I could get my hands on. By the time I fought against Kitava in Act 5, I believe I had roughly 60% on all my elemental resists (excluding Chaos).

Then the encounter happened, and Kitava put me in my place. He would just shave off eighty-percent of my life each time he does a telegraphed hit, and this was Vedrick having at least 6 levels an advantage over the zone. I was Flame Dashing mad all over the place, only taking potshots of Tectonic Slam on Kitava when I was sure I was safe. The arena being a colorful mess didn't help at all with the confusion (glowing staff, Kitava's beating heart, blood portals, etc.). Fortunately, I didn't die against Kitava's Boss Fight, but it did had me questioning the legitimacy of my build. Maybe, just maybe, Vedrick wasn't hot shit.

With my pants down (or none at all because Vedrick was a Templar), it was obviously time for a retrospective in what could have went wrong with my build. I questioned myself, pondered over it, agonized over it but in the end, the retrospective didn't really made any headway because I didn't understand much of the game and what works and what does not. Even now, being introduced to new mechanics such as Delve, Breach, Temple of Atzoatle, and the list goes on would leave me stunned in how much I have more to learn.

Eventually I made two conclusions, and both were things I know to be true: a) Resists are important, and b) Clearing zones is fun. I spent the remaining of my Acts playthrough building damage and resists (armor and elemental).

To end a long-winded post, I was living on the edge for the rest of the Acts (VI - X). Danger was my constant companion as every mob (even common ones), for some damn reason, could kill me if I had a lax in my judgment; Izaro two-shots me if I'm not careful. The Beast's second encounter had me maximizing the use of my Molten Shield, otherwise I'd just die outright. Kitava's Cultists drains my health as if I was water going down the sink. And I enjoyed every moment.

I gotta say, this was one hell of a first week, and I believe I won't be stopping soon. I'm going to be tackling what the community calls "Maps" next.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

For the people who have taken the time to read what is basically word-vomit from a new player, thank you for sticking through.

Here's the link to my build: www.poeurl.com/cCCi

If any of the veterans are kind enough, could I ask some suggestions in what I could have improved in my build, or refine it further? I had Vedrick built around Tectonic Slam and Fortify.

And to not make a waste of a post, please comment any tips that could help a new player (such as myself) in navigating the maze that is PoE. It could be general build-tips, skill gems synergy, etc.

PoE 1920X1080 vs. ultra wide 5120x1440 Display

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 05:06 AM PST

I recently bought an ultra-wide screen with 5120x1440 resolution (black Friday ftw...).

For those of you who are interested, I made an Imgur album with comparison of field of view (FoV) when playing PoE on that screen vs. regualr 1920x1080 display @ https://imgur.com/a/U7w13pC

When relevant, I tried to position myself at the exact spot with each character, so it will be easy to compare how much more you can see with an ultra wide setup compared to traditional 16:9 screen.

Thing to take notes if you consider playing on such scale:

    1. First of all, PoE work great with ultra wide screen, giving you much larger FoV. Some of the game screen are not fully scaled to this aspect ratio (like atlas, syndicate board etc.) but it's not really an issue, as it just add black bars to the side of the main image.
    2. Depending on your screen size and distance from your eyes, the inventory and stash tab can be quite far apart which might cause the need to turn your head a bit when trying to view both, which can be inconvenient.
    3. The PoE client will not recognize key press/mouse input when the cursor is too far off from your character. You can see this @ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwWXzaHtt0Y . At first I thought it had to do maximum projectile distance, as in, PoE won't activate a projectile skill when you click beyond the projectile maximum range, however, the clipping zone is not circular, but has a trapezoid shape center on your character with the longer base at the bottom of the screen. Also, it failed to register move command bound to my left mouse click (not shown in video), clearly indicating that this is some client and not skill related issue. If you are melee, it won't really be a problem. For range skill however, you might need to get used to it so as not to position your cursor too far off your character.

    Brand new to PoE!

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 08:27 AM PST

Hey guys I felt compelled to post about an awesome experience I just had with a player in game. I know it might now be some crazy expensive item or anything but I am fresh to this game highest level character I have is 29 and I was told by some friends to get try to work on finding a Tabula Rasa. Long story short I was searching for a while no answers. Then out of the blue comes a nice player "mctschegga_COBRA" invites me and all he/she says is come to my hideout and open trade. I asked him how much for it because I was going to have a buddy pick it up for me and he ends up giving it to me for free. Like I said it's not a huge deal but was a very kind gesture and really gives a good experience to a brand new player like myself. Thank you COBRA.

PSA: Filter each section of the shop by what's on sale

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 01:28 AM PST

GGG have recommended looking through each section of the shop to see what's on offer as the 'Specials' section doesn't actually display everything that's on sale at the moment.

If you want to filter a specific section of the shop (Skill Effects, for example) and only see the items that are on sale, paste the following code into the browser console (press F12 and go to the console tab):

    var items = $('.shopItemBase'); var filtered = $(items).filter(function() { return $(this).find('.onSaleIcon').length == 0; }); $(filtered).remove();
