New PoE player here coming from Diablo 2, recommend me beginner guides please!

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 09:16 AM PDT

    Hello PoE peeps!

Why I switched from Diablo 2 to PoE (for future reference when people search via Google SEO), Diablo 2 is a lost cause with the players botting, cheating, privately duping, bypassing bans via proxies and then we have Blizzard who ban CD-Keys for no reason so you could invest more money into Diablo 2 by buying CD-Keys which they now ban for VPN usage and the support is a total testicle filled with sh1t.

Enough of Diablo 2 rant, I'm considering switching to PoE and want to try it out, I read a lot of debates and decided to give it a try, though.. after reading a few guides and watching a few videos, the skill tree looks like you need a PhD to understand it.

Please tell me what things are a MUST for a newcomer, what are drop filters (I saw one exist to only show the best loot) and is it actually too late to start playing PoE?

Thanks in advance for the information and opinions!

Opinion: Synthesis could offer more to the game than recent leagues

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 10:58 AM PDT

Synthesis was a league with a lot of problems and that was poorly received by many (including myself). I think if problems were tweaked it offers more interesting content (both gameplay and lore) than each of the last four leagues (legion, blight, metamorph, and delirium). I played extensively in the last four leagues and each offered a good core mechanic to the game. Legion had timeless jewels; Blight had blighted maps and anointments; Metamorph added increased interaction with map bosses and added catalysts; and Delirium added cluster jewels. Other than those core mechanics, the main attraction for me in leagues from Legion through Delirium were the large loot explosions. However, I don't think loot explosions are a good substitute for engaging gameplay and have devalued some loot types as well as game content (over abundance of loot that was once specific to a certain mechanics/areas). The Simulacrum in Delirium is the prime example of devaluing many types of loot while not providing engaging/interesting gameplay. You just sit in one small map for 20-30 mins, kill 20 waves, and stash loot.

I find a lot more potential in Synthesis' gameplay. It's interesting in that you actively solve a puzzle to access new areas and have to plan on how you want to access profitable nodes/bosses (a bit like Delve). You don't just sit and farm waves of enemies like in blighted maps and the simulacrum (even though I find this a bit boring I still do this content for the big loot). Synthesis also had so much more story and lore than subsequent leagues. It was presented at strange times that made it difficult to access/pay attention to, but was still very interesting. It actually built the character of Cavas with the plot twist of revealing him as Venarius and showing his role in releasing the Elder. Metamorph and Delirium seem especially short on story. It feels like Tane is missing lines in his lab and there is no real exposition of the nature of the Strange Voice.

Synthesis of course had problems, some of which were solved after release and some which were never addressed. Here is my short rundown on some problems and potential solutions.

    Map Encounters

I think the map encounters would have been improved with the removal or adjustment of memory decay (would open up content to slower builds/ reduce need for clearspeed meta). In addition, players should have been able to store more memory fragments at one time. If ever implemented as a core mechanic, I think map encounters would need to drop more than one memory fragment (probably just 2 fragments) due to less interaction with this mechanic than in the original league.

    Nexus

The Nexus felt clunky to me even though I really like the concept. I think it would have made more sense to lay down permanent memory fragments on an ever-expanding map rather than have a small map that frequently reset. Retravelling through/reclearing memory fragment areas felt weird and I never really figured out the best way to do this. A permanent path that you only need to clear once makes a lot more sense in my opinion. Monster density within fragments could be improved and difficult adjusted to current power levels.

    Crafting System

I think the crafting system was a great concept that allowed for crafting really powerful gear. It allowed for the crafting of implicits on items which currently are only changeable through corruption. However, the system was really unclear and picking up/storing lots of synthesized bases sucked. One solution to storing/picking up synth bases (only these and not other loot), could be their immediate pickup and storage by Cavas/Zana. These bases could later be accessed by talking to Cavas/Zana in your hideout. Cavas/Zana would have a tab that stored all bases by item type (just like the current unique stash tab). If GGG was feeling especially generous, these bases could be priced and listed for sale from the master's tab. I think this could also be implemented for veiled items in Betrayal with collection and storage of veiled bases available through Jun.

    Conclusion

I hope that Synthesis content someday makes a reappearance in the core game (with some adjustments of course). I also hope that GGG implements more of the story-telling and league-design elements in future releases. I think that taking a step back from over-the-top loot-explosions, keeping loot more restricted to its parent content (loot niches are important. lab should be the best place for enchantments, betrayal for scarabs/veiled items, delve for fossils, metamorph for catalysts, etc.), and interactive league design (such as Delve and Synthesis) would help keep this game fresh and interesting for me. I want content that requires at least a little player thought and some player choices rather than just speeding through maps with fast/strong meta builds.

note- this is my first ever reddit post. Feel free to disagree with my opinions but try to keep criticism constructive

    Orb of Horizons

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 07:16 AM PDT

Orb of Horizons says it will reforge a map to another of the same tier. Nowhere does it say it has to be naturally the same tier, in fact wiki does not explicitly say this either.

I'm at 137/140 awakening bonus objectives and i tried to roll for the maps i still need. but it turns out, i cannot do that at all because my maps exist as a lower tier versions. Why the hell is this not said in the currency it self? I just wasted like 70 orbs trying to land one of the few t14 and t15 maps i'm still missing.

I feel like at the current state, the orb of horizons is pretty goddamn useless. If you happen to need a map that it cannot roll to, it's like buying a lottery ticket with 0% chance of winning.

People who get 60 fps even in densely populated high tier maps, can you post your computer specs?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 12:11 AM PDT

Gonna build a new one. And I know that even if your computer is great, sometimes it just flat out doesn't work well with poe.

Well, I want to build one specifically to get poe running at 60 fps most of the time. dropping down to 50 is acceptable. If your computer can do this PLEASE post what parts you've got!

    Thanks!

[edit] my issue isn't an internet issue, I have fiber optic. This is 100% absolutely my computer needing upgraded. No amount of overclocking or workarounds can bring my FPS above 10 in a juicy map, believe me!

Has it really been 6 leagues now where using anything other than cyclone on a 6l costs anywhere from 30 to 70 mana a pop.
