Not every league mechanic has to go core.

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 05:59 AM PST

According to GGG, it's apparent that Heist will also be added to the core game. I've been playing the game since 3.1 and so far, every league mechanic has gone core besides Synthesis. Seriously, not every single league mechanic has to be added to the core game. I understand that GGG puts a lot of effort into making each league mechanic and they feel like they have to salvage it, but it doesn't mean that every addition they make to the game should be permanently added.

My takes on the situation: Make some league mechanics seasonal. They can come back every now and then, and when they do, their fans would be happy that they finally came back. (Maybe even keep their uniques unobtainable until the league mechanic comes back) That way there will be more build diversity whenever it happens.

Another idea would be to do what they did with Synthesis. Just have a few of the boss maps, and scrap the entirety of the mechanic. I actually like what they did with Synthesis, keeping a tiny feel for Synthesis without cluttering the game.

A very nice change of pace of the Endless Delve event was its simplicity. No bloated content, just playing the game.

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 08:15 AM PST

What I really loved about the Endless Delve event was that we simply played the game. No Atlas management, no Master Missions, no Unveiling, no unlocking of crafts, no leveling of NPCs, no scarabs, no fragments. Just go in, kill stuff and get loot at the end. Also not having to constantly click on things during combat was very nice. The focus was on the action part, not the management part of the game. And I absolutely loved that.

Don't get me wrong, if this was the permanent state of the game, it would get stale real quick. And I think the varitey of stuff we can do is what makes PoE so great. I also think feeling and seeing the progress you make is important. But I also think that we are at a point where there is too much stuff we have to keep track of.

For me, there is this problem that when they add new stuff, its fun to do it the first few times. Its new, its interesteing. But after doing it over and over again, its not only getting stale, its getting annoying and frustrating. At some point, certain mechanics are so outdated that they hurt the game more than they benefit it.

If Endless Delve showed me one thing, its that the flow of the game gets constantly interrupted because we have to micro manage too much stuff. And while its good to have a system that lets you min/max your playstyle, It should be at a reasonable level so that actually playing the game is the first priority.

I wish GGG would more frequently look at the different mechanics of the game and either remove them or rework them so that it doesnt hurt the flow of the game.

Not every league should go core but every core league should get updated annually to synergize better

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 11:11 AM PST

Temple getting new rooms like access to snyth bench , delve getting more nodes like a harvest node. This way you have a reason to actually target and do these objectives I mean look at syndicate and scarab farming we get new ones which is updated for syndicate drops and the mechanic stays relevant.

    Ps heist should go core

My biggest takeaway from Endless Delve: content being gated by the difficulty of the content instead of a progression state feels Really Good.

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 11:44 AM PST

It feels genuinely amazing to be able to just hop in and slam your build against the biggest threat the game can muster without having to fiddle with accumulating an external resource or undertaking the Sisyphean task of getting the Atlas up to full strength.

For the first time in a long time, the time I spent in town fiddling with items wasn't focused on how to get more resources to be able to play the game - it was focused on how to survive the challenge I'm throwing myself against, and picking which path is least likely to get me killed.

This is good. I don't necessarily know how to extend that feeling to the rest of the game, but if anyone at GGG can figure it out, please do.

Charging for Invisible Buff Effect Seems... kind of wrong?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 04:04 PM PST

So I'm going to preface this with the fact I have spent in the realm of quadruple digits on PoE, I have a multitude of supporter packs and, for quite awhile, would often buy up to T3~T4 of the core packs.

But when the Invisible Buff Effect was announced with a $5 price tag on it, I was caught off guard.

See, every time I bought effects, gear, footprints, pets, etc etc, it was under the concept of "I'm also supporting artists here" and am, in effect, voting with my wallet on the thematics of PoE overall.

I kind of operate under the expectation that GGG has folks who monitor MTX sales and whatever is popular helps guide and steer future content. Lots of people like <insert new supporter pack>? We should lean more into that then.

I strongly expect this is why some aesthetics have like 20 different versions for different skills, armor, portals, etc, while others are "one and done". GGG knows what we want by what we buy.

The Invisible Buff Effect though is... well none of that at all? It has no artist involved, it was just... turning an effect off. Literally. And multiple people and streamers have confirmed that the Invisible Buff Effect turns it off in such a way that your FPS goes up

Modern games typically offer "turn off visual effect" as a toggleable option in menus, not something you have to pay money for. It's a bit much, and in some case might literally be pay to win for colorblind folks, or people who are experience lag or other issues.

We've already seen cases where some effects negatively impact the games FPS and performance. People who paid for Invisible Buff Effect now gain an advantage here. Further, by lowering a lot of screen clutter (and boy does it add up), it makes the game a helluva lot easier to play.

And then to top it all off, you have to pay $5 per effect, so for those of us rocking like 20 auras and effects, this means you have to drop $100 just to have the privilege to clear off all that screen clutter.

Now look I dropped a lot of money on single things here and there, $15 for a ferret pet, and I had to buy it twice to get two of em? Done and done, didn't think twice about it cause god-dang I love me some carpet-sharks.

But this one got me, and ever since then I have found my spending on PoE has plummeted. Leading up to the release of that effect I think I was averaging about $50 a month on PoE, easily.

But since then, especially these last few cycles, every time new core packs and supporter packs get announced I look at them and consider buying them, then I remember getting charged $5 to disable my auras and decide "Maybe not"

GGG, I seriously think you should refund everyone who has bought the Invisible Buff Effect, and give it out for free infinitely for anyone and everyone to use, by default. Such a visual effect should just be part of the game inherently. Don't charge your players for the privilege of reducing screen clutter.

You are better than that. Chris if you read this, I honestly place the price tag on Invisible Buff Effect in the same category as what Wizards did with some of their recent choices in MtG.

It has been disheartening to see and, more so, disheartening to see no one from GGG own up to this marketing choice.

    And you know what?

I'm like 90% sure if you refunded everyone for this purchase, you'd probably end up profiting because tonnes of folks will turn around and impulse buy more points and buy more stuff because they suddenly got an extra 50 or 100 points that they didn't expect.

If you support this, please comment below "I support making Invisible Buff Effect free for everyone"

I really want to hear GGG's thoughts on this choice.

Heist going core but Synthesis being scrapped is a crime against humanity

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 04:25 PM PST

Synth league had a lot of issues early on and it was poorly received due to that, but once it was fixed it was an amazing experience for the people that continued playing it. A lot of people quit by that time so not many players remember how good it was. It was, at the time, one of the most ambitious (or even the most ambitious) league to date with a lot of resources spent on it. Even Chris Wilson said it's a crime that it didn't go core cause they invested so much in it.

It wasn't the first time that a league didn't go core, or it going core happened a league or two later once it was polished, cause initially it was not implemented well or it was poorly received. It's one of the things I love GGG for, not being afraid to try different and strange leagues and also not being afraid to admit when something didn't work out so it needs to be changed or scrapped.

Now we see Heist is going core. The reasoning can't be that GGG invested too much in it so it can't be scrapped cause the same happened with Synthesis which was also a huge, expensive league. Heist has SO many issues with some of them being in it's core design (like it being a door waiting simulator, universally hated by everyone) that simply can't be fixed with 'small changes' that we were told will happen.

Why is Heist going core and more polished league like Synthesis was scrapped?

[QOL] can we PLEASE have an option to move tabs to the far RIGHT?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 01:19 AM PST

every now and then i like to clean up my permanent league tabs and every end of the league the tabs gets shuffled with the remove only tabs which isnt a problem, the problem is that the race reward tabs, for whatever reason, gets re-shuffled every time as well. it takes hours upon hours to move them to the far right because there are so many of them. having the option to instantly move a tab to the far left helps but that also means i have to move every single tab, i have close to 200 NON remove only tabs. would it be so hard to add a feature to also move a tab to the far right? i've been asking for this since that feature was first introduced

Unique Weapon Viability - A DPS Problem

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 06:07 AM PST

From Excalibur and Sting, to the Master Sword, legendary weapons are a staple of the fantasy genre and have been a core piece of fantasy video games as well. You will find them in almost every fantasy story and there are many cool and flavorful unique weapons in POE.

POE employs a philosophy on unique items that has proven to enable an item diversity that is arguably unmatched by any other arpg. That philosophy is essentially that unique items will have build defining/enabling effects, but won't be best in slot from a statistical perspective. This has been a great approach in my opinion, and has made most uniques viable in endgame builds while also maintaining the value of rares in slots where those build enabling effects aren't needed.

There is one exception where this philosophy doesn't work however and that's because the statistical numbers are so directly tied to the overall success of the build that it just isn't worthwhile to make that sacrifice to get the build enabling effect. I am of course talking about dps for unique weapons in attack builds. Sacrificing 200 or more dps over top-end rares is almost always going to result in a lower overall dps for an attack build, and is usually significant enough to be build crippling unless you are going full hipster. There are a few exceptions where build enabling effect provides competitive dps (The Saviour, Paradoxica, Brutus' Lead Sprinkler, etc.), but those cases are always tied to the uniques with competitive dps numbers. There are ultimately very few unique weapons that fit in a min/maxed attack build.

To me, someone who likes the fantasy of the legendary weapon and plays attack builds almost exclusively, this is something I would like to see change. I want to make a competitive build with weapons like Razor of the Seventh Sun or Varunastra, Rigwald's Savagery, etc. because I think they are cool.

I don't think that's an unpopular take. The difficulty comes in finding a way to make unique weapons more endgame viable without hurting the game. If they all dropped at high end dps from the get go it would be too easy for players to get a high end weapon due to the general availability of uniques. This would ruin progression opportunities that make the game more satisfying. If uniques were made too good they could also make rare weapons obsolete, which would eliminate crafting options and decrease item diversity. That said I do think there are opportunities for a middle ground that could and should be explored.

Of note, the recent 2 hander rework went a long way toward making them more viable. But, and I think rightly so, they could only buff them so far without making strong weapons too easily available. I wasn't around when prophecies came out but it seems like fated uniques may have been a past attempt to solve for this issue as well. These have the added advantage of gating the more powerful unique version behind rng and completion of a task. Perhaps they could tie a fix in to a prophecy rework.

I am by no means a game designer, but have a couple other ideas that could also be explored.

Unique Weapon Upgrade Option - I'm thinking of some sort of crafting bench that is gated behind endgame activities similar to the corruption chamber in the Alva temple or syndicate crafting benches. This would probably need to be more rare than those or come with a chance of bricking the item. You would use this to upgrade a unique to a new version with higher dps numbers. There could possibly be multiple tiers to this to make it more difficult. There would be a lot of ways to make this hard enough to achieve to make the upgrades worthwhile when completed. If balanced correctly top end rares would also maintain the highest dps numbers.

Rare Weapon Merger Recipe - A vendor recipe that requires you to sell a unique and a rare weapon of the same weapon type that's a certain dps threshold and kicks back a higher dps version of the unique. For example, sticking with Razor of the Seventh Sun, selling it plus a rare midnight blade with at least 500 dps could net you an upgraded version of the unique at the cost of the rare. I have no idea what the actual numbers would need to look like, but this would help rares maintain value as they'd be necessary for the recipe and it'd pull them out of the economy. This would also help maintain progression goals while allowing players to use the normal versions of the unique then working towards their upgrade. Rares would still hold top possible dps but this could close the gap and make the dps trade off worth it for the build defining effect of the unique.

TLDR: Most unique weapons are not viable in attack builds because the dps numbers are too low. I would like to have a way to upgrade unique weapons and make them more competitive.
