Path of Exile is an Abusive Game - Perspectives from a Seasoned Player

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 05:32 AM PDT

Background: I have played PoE since Betrayal, with over 1800 hours logged on steam. I have played D3 for about 600 hours. Every league I hit at least red maps and I have killed Sirus at least a couple times each league. I am not a 1% player but I do consider myself 'decent' at PoE. I was compelled to purchase Last Epoch as a direct result of Chris' comments about Chaos and Exalt crafting. That decision was a massive eye opener for me and the comparisons that I draw here will be based on those two games, but they can of course be more broadly applied.

    -

THIS POST WILL NOT DISCUSS HARVEST OR CRAFTING

    -

GGG, I love you guys and I love your game but hear me now. One day, probably sooner rather than later, a different ARPG is going to come along and eat your lunch. I mean every word of what I said in the title. Your game, wondrously complex and engaging as it is, is abusive to players' time, computers, health, and sanity. After spending about a day (in game) playing LE I opened up PoE again. I closed the game after half of a juicy harbinger map, thought about why the hell I did it that, and then sat down to write this post.

    1) Quality of Life:

I had no idea how much I missed the ability to walk over gold and pick it up automatically, or one click grab all of the crafting materials on screen, until I went back, opened up a breach, and had to pick up about 25 individuals splinters of Tul. This functionality does nothing to 'simplify' or 'baby' the game, but it sure as hell keeps me in the gameplay loop longer and is easier on my wrist and fingers.

Last Epoch has the ability to sort your inventory, aka the computer plays inventory tetris for you, leaving you more time to actually play the game. These are just a couple examples of mechanics that don't 'hold your hand', but still make you feel like the game respects your time and your desire not to get carpal tunnel. There are plenty more someone could point to and everyone will have things that they don't mind or frustrate them to no end. But I think we can all agree that PoE needs to be brought into at least the 2000's, if not the 2010's with regards to QoL.

    2) Itemization:

I missed picking up loot, comparing it to my current gear, and finding something better more often than once every 5 years of playtime. PoE is an economy based ARPG. It is not a loot based ARPG. I'm truly disheartened that GGG doesn't realize this. Animate weapon has been so bad for so long they can't even use that excuse anymore.

    3) Performance:

There is a reason I am not calling this 'optimization'. I am tired of tagging a delirium mirror and having my PC, which can run Horizon: Zero Dawn at 60FPS on high settings, crash. I am tired of dying due to flame dash desync. I am tired of 5 FPS (and maybe a death or two because I can't even see my character) when I find a Valdo Harbinger with reinforcements and my screen becomes a blue blur. I am tired of random crashes on my way out of a Heist. The state of performance in PoE is unacceptable, full stop.

    4) Gameplay:

I consider the $40 I spent on LE worth it because of the minimap and zoom alone. PoE conditioned me to have the minimap overlaid on top of my screen at all times so hard that I was almost shocked to play a game where I could actually see where I was going or, on rare occasions, need to reference the minimap for a quick second before putting it away and looking at my character again. I will never understand why we cannot zoom further out in PoE.

Being able to understand what killed me and how I could have avoided it is a breath of fresh air. Knowing that each boss fight is not just a brainless DPS or eHP check, and can actually vary its outcome depending on how well I manage my positioning, skills, and cooldowns is fantastic. This fact makes me want to see just how ridiculous of a build I can put together in LE, knowing that I will be able to compensate for lack of 'meta' by knowledge or player skill. Without 'the system that shall not be named', this isn't possible in PoE.

    5) Bloat versus Complexity:

PoE is still the most complex and deep ARPG out there, no question, but I found myself happy to accept a reduction in complexity for a massive decrease in bloat. I don't miss passive tree points that give +10 to str/dex/int (in LE, just as an example, every skill node that increases your base stats also increases or changes some other stat). I don't miss 99% of strongboxes. I don't miss tormented spirits. I don't miss talismans. I don't miss my screen being literally covered in items, all of which are dumpster tier. I don't miss 80% of all skill and support gems being useless (made doubly prominent by the massive increase from Heist and subsequent nerfs to alternate quality auras). There is a middle ground between D3, aka baby's first ARPG, and PoE. I think PoE has gone off the deep end and needs to cull content.

    Conclusion:

I could go on longer but I think I've made my point. I'm sure many of you will point to one or more of the things I've said and argue that these mechanics either add to PoE or are something that isn't a big deal. I respect that, but the sheer number of mechanics you can point to and say 'this is a real problem' when looking at PoE is just too great to ignore. I, and many other seasoned players (Diablo 2 was my first ARPG), have been conditioned to accept the current state of affairs because there is no alternative. That state of existence will not persist forever. I am hopeful that much of this will be alleviated in PoE2, but I fear that the 'free to play' nature of the game will just lead us down the same path of poor performance, bloated content, and an emphasis on creating a game that people play for longer as opposed to a game people enjoy playing. Logging in, opening a map, and willingly quitting back to desktop in the span of 5 minutes was one of the most depressing experiences I've ever had playing this game. If you've read this far, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk and consider that supporting alternatives to Path of Exile might be the best way to generate real change in this game we all love.

Edit: Inbox is RIP so probably won't reply much past this point. For those of you who replied with something compelling, thanks for the debate. I know this is a contentious topic.

It blows my mind there is still no Color Blind support in this game.

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 09:36 AM PDT

A nightmare to play for somebody with standard common red/green color blindness. Especially with gem color. Even a simple designation of gem color within the gigantic description would be game changing. I really do love this game other than that. I have to have my son help me sort them If I want to play. Please GGG I can't be the only one.

    PoE meme. Harvest vs GGG

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 05:23 AM PDT

GGG 2020 Financial statements have been released - Same $50m profit as in 2019.

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 01:27 PM PDT

These were released 3 weeks ago, but I don't check that often. As always this is public information anyone can find on the NZ register

Edit: I've been informed by someone more informed about these documents that the main point of interest is actually the increase in cash flow from customer receipts (basically mtx sales). This has gone up from $77m in the March 2019 statement, to $108m in the Sept 2020 statement, a 40% increase in sales.

I'm no expert but from the data it looks like POE hasn't grown one cent from 2019 until now in net profits, but revenue and expenses have gone up 10% or so, and taxes have gone up but I don't know much about that. Honestly not much growth at all but I guess that's expected in 2020 (although this was before the cyberpunk delays).

Here is the old statement release on august 2019, there was no statement since then until March 02 of this year, which includes march-september of 2019, and september 2019 to september 2020 due to a statement date change.

The main info is on page 5 but if you have any numbers background the rest is probably interesting too.

How deadly are monster critical strikes?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 04:24 PM PDT

I am thinking of crafting " You take (21–30)% reduced Extra Damage from Critical Strikes" on my belt... but firstly wanted to know how useful it is?

Are monster critical strikes that deadly? When we get "one-shot" in this game is this sometimes due to monster critical strikes? And will this mod help with that?

Spent 120 ex upgrading my Essence Worm for insane gains for my Archmage BL character

In the latest in the journey for meaningless minmax.
After a few weeks and around 20 000-25 000 scours/chance orbs at about 120 ex spent. A total of 63 Unset Rings with the Gilded Fossil implicit made into Uniques.

I finally replaced the Gilded Fossil implicit on the 11th Essence Worm I managed to make. And it even gave me a boost! A grand total of 1.5% dps boost thanks to the few points of mana for Archmage as well as 6 dexterity letting me level up my Sniper's Mark from 18 to 20 not having any other way to get the dexterity without giving anything more valuable up.

This definitely wasn't the best corruption I could end up with but there were a bunch that would have been completely useless for me so overall I'm relieved that my first Essence Worm that did not brick completely actually gave me a useful result. But I can't deny I'm somewhat dissatisfied not hitting one of my higher priority targets or at least a higher roll on this one.

In priority order of the corrupts I was after would be
    1. Increased Wrath Aura Effect
    2. Cast Speed
    3. 2 Tiers of Fire Damage to Spells and Attacks (ignite for Cinderswallow Urn freeing up a suffix on a jewel)
    4. All res
    5. %Dexterity/%Intelligence
And then 15 mods that would be bricks

Some data on the distribution off Uniques:
    32 Malachai's Artifice
    10 The Hungry Loop
    11 Essence Worms
    10 Profane Proxy

Out of these I got 6 total rings that ended up with both a corrupt implicit as well as the socket.
One of those 6 I sold for one for 35 ex and another one for 15 ex recouping some losses.

New to the game and very intimidated

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 03:04 PM PDT

So I come from Diablo, I've been playing this game for about 15 hours now and just finished Act 4. I'm following a bleed bow gladiator guide and it seems that I can't get any good bows and items to make my links and skills better, and I'm low on currency such as colorize orbs, jeweler orbs, etc so I can't afford to gamble. I've been trying to do what guides say, sticking to 2 levels below next map level so exp is efficient. I've died a couple times but now I have no idea if my passive tree is for the early game or end game as I follow the build guide tree line. It's frustrating to not know if you're doing something wrong or right. My split arrows seems to do fine but I'm still rocking with a common bow 4L at level 41... what did you do to overcome the initial intimidation of the game when you started? Any tips would help. This is my first ever character btw.

    Posted: 20 Mar 2021 03:43 PM PDT

I'm wondering if more people play the game like I do, do YOU!?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 05:43 PM PDT

Before a league starts, I pick a league starter build that can do all content with a bit of investment and looks fun to play. Then, my goals are in order: Reach maps, defeat every end game boss, complete 36 challenges. I only go for challenges if I care about the rewards for that league, otherwise I'm done after defeating every map boss.

I rarely make a second character, and depending on how hard I nolife I can be done halfway the league. When I have reached my goals, currency and other items lose all value in my eyes. I keep my gear, in case I would want to try the toon out in standard in the future. But I like to give my currency away or do weird things with it. My dream is to find a mirror and either ''accidentally'' trade it away while buying a low cost item from trade, or film myself destroying the mirror.

tldr, does anyone play like this:
    - simple goals
    - usually quits playing halfway league
    - Rarely makes more than 1 character per league
    - wants to destroy a mirror and put it on youtube

    Just curious!

For Science: Casually Farming End Game: How to Obtain a Mirror by Casually Farming Stuff

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 08:45 AM PDT

I am your typical hideout farmer guy where I do content by just dreaming of doing them. However, this league I took a different approach to finish the league. Instead of focusing to get 36 challenges, I've decided to run 10 different end game farming projects with minimal investment plan to start with. I normally don't like repeating farming strats since it gets pretty boring quite easily (e.g. Valdo farm) so this was perfect balance of farming but not burning out of it. I also decided to record gains/losses along the way to get to a mirror (or how much % of a mirror). Of course, I had to find a fancy name to make it not a chore but appealing and there I call it:

Qosmoz Casually Farming End Game Projects

Content # of Runs Cost (c / ex) Profit (c) Profit (ex)
    Blighted Maps 30 T14-T16 (Random Maps) 360 3.064 30,6
    Simulacrums 30 Simulacrum Runs 2.000c (20ex) 9.853 94,5
Elder Guardians + Twisted + Elder Boss Farm 3 Runs of Full Rotation (In Progress) 180-200c 1.439 14,4
Shaper Guardians + Formed + Shaper Boss Farm 30 Rotations (To Start)
Uber Elder Boss Farm 30 Runs (To Start)
Breachlords + Hidden 30 Rotations (To Start)
Synthesis Maps + Forgotten 30 Rotations (To Start)
5-Way Legion Runs 30 Runs (To Start)
Infused Beachheads 30 Runs (To Start)
Maven Boss Farm 50 Runs (To Start)
    TOTAL 2960c 12.917c 129,17ex (18% of Mirror)

Farms are done with my own builds (pretty meta): Low life Coc Ice Nova Assassin for Farming Maps and Chainbreaker Low Life BL Miner Sabo for Bossing. Runs and Boss runs are quite smooth, I have invested 50-60ex per char at this point of the league.

LL CoC Ice Nova Assassin Build Guide

Chainbreaker LL BL Miner Sabo Build Guide

It's quite fun to complete this project until the end of the league. Currently sitting about 100ex raw currency after all valuables and medium valuable stuff selling. Here is the detailed spreadsheet I keep tracking of all data.

Qosmoz Casually Farming End Game Projects

I have a hectic schedule but I try my best to stream all this progress. If you are interested, please join me on my twitch channel. I stream mostly on Mon/Wed/Thur/Sat evenings (CET) until midnight. My content typically is about boss killing, helping other people to learn fight, enjoying good drops for people. It's pretty chill and fun. Here is my channel: twitch.tv/Qosmoz

I plan to make some explanations and details about entire thing in a small YouTube series, it might bring some inspiration for some casual players like me for the next league. Hit me any question if you have in game: qosmoz_miner or qosmoz_coc are two of my characters I am mostly on. I will keep this post updated with my gains until the end of the league. Wish me luck.

    Cheers!

I learned a LOT Watching Lightee - What else might I be missing?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2021 03:02 PM PDT

Here are some of the things I never really fully knew while watching Lightee. He doesn't speak too much on his streams but when he does it's informative and insightful. I specifically watched the first two days of his race and his first day of the reroll after the death. I'm a long time PoE player but I don't really read up much outside of looking at build outlines and I don't really watching PoE streams.

A lot of this stuff might be obvious to some since they're likely shown on stream a lot but, here we go:

    • The Harvest not-talking-to-Oshabi thing. I don't know how I missed this, but apparently if you do not talk to Oshabi in a new league you will get the 'Complete the Harvest' when one appears in a zone
    • Following up to the previous: this means you can essentially spam open/leave new maps just checking for the Harvest prompt. He found more Harvest in 10 minutes doing this than I found leveling to 90 in Haewark.
    • Smoke Mine is good, like- really, REALLY good. I always ignored Smoke Mine because I didn't want to detonate, then I realized I could just left click it. Holy crap, people say that sitting in your hide out is the biggest time loss in this game but honestly the difference between someone using Smoke Mine / Flame Dash well and someone who doesn't use it or even uses it poorly.... wow the difference is insane.
    • You cannot take reflect damage on damage you reflect. This is specifically important for Molten Shell
    • One of the major differences between top tier racers and extremely fast players is just pretending a good portion of the games 'features' don't exist. I realize I can skip a lot of things, like Alva, Heists, etc and be so much faster but I'd also lose a lot of fun. I like going out of my way to pick up Dark Shrines in lab, for example
    • Following up on the above- a lot of top tier racers completely ignore 99% of the loot. Again, I know I could be faster doing this but I have a lot of fun picking up stuff for other builds and such (and that is okay)
    • Lightee has a plan. The plan is the plan and that is that- very little deviation at all even if the game shouts at him to do something different. A really good example of this is Lightee looted a Last Resort EXTREMELY early. He refused to touch it because it doesn't 100% work with what he had originally planned (two handers). There wasn't a single thought in his mind that he might be able to just pick up a different skill on the vendor for a lot of his early game. He ended up spending all of his currency early and went on full tilt because he couldn't get the right colors on anything. I could be wrong but I feel like had he just adapted in the early game it'd have gone better for him. Not a massive deal, just highlighting how insignificant anything but the exact plan is.
    • Following up on above more I realize how starved the racers are for currency just simply due to never picking anything up. Because of this I ended up learning a lot about how to manage with very little currency and how to fix it. Valdo's on lower maps to fill out currency might be obvious to some, but it's not something I'd break away from Harvesting or something for- I might now!
    • Maximizing the Atlas. One of the things was simply NOT completing Palace. He stated that it was a mistake to do so and I thought to myself 'how bad could it be?'. I then completed Palace and was flooded with the abysmal layout.
    • Manipulation is massive for being fast. One of his plans was to isolate Vinderi to increase the chances of Catalysts drops. It didn't 100% work out but it was neat to see how it was done.
    • Essences are another thing. He specifically only ever fought essences he needed. I personally fight them all because I can trade them in during Harvest. I think he could have potentially lost a lot of good Essence's this way but it could have also ended up in nothing if the RNG was against him.
    • This may be controversial but I'll add it. Not using a logout macro and/or Lutbot is horrible. I've played HC the entirety of my PoE and have always been against them. Even ignoring the 'logout to not die' thing, it's so useful for just regular game play and saves a ton of time and portal scrolls. Being able to quickly go to the hideout and returning to town after picking up a quest item is invaluable.

Here are some things I personally found out while playing in the SSFHC Zizaran Gauntlet:

    • It's not as bad as you think as long as you keep moving.
    • Doing your own builds, even as a veteran, is so unrewarding. I played a completely blind Bow Totem Scion (died at 40~ to Piety) and Bow Totem Ranger (level 80, alive). These builds did absolutely atrocious damage even without having many defensive nodes. The Ranger even had a Tabula. I tried the pure totem style with Artillery and Siege (Even with Iron Commander at 32) and both were abysmal. I ended up switching to Ballista Totem and tried out quite literally every bow skill and all were barely usable outside of Split Shot. Split Shot was actually great for clear but horrible for bosses.
    • Holy heck Champion is good. The damage you take is literally a fraction of everything else and I easily made it to 90 without ever playing it before. It also, somehow, has bonkers damage especially while leveling and for bosses.
    • Ritual is brutal sometimes. On my first character, the Champion, I got a 6L Belly with great rolls in a level 55~ zone or something. I couldn't buy it and couldn't defer it so it just disappeared. I had cleared all the rituals in the zone and hadn't bought or refreshed. This was probably my worst feeling moment in the literal entirety of PoE's existence and it should not be able to happen
    • In my opinion, ritual doesn't get worse the higher level you get and into maps because the items are less impactful then, it specifically gets worse (again, in my opinion from leveling 10~ things from 1-80) because after about level 60 the type of rewards you get are basically all the same and not exciting nor fun at all. If you do rituals 55-70~ it's AMAZING. You get 5Ls/6Ls regularly, fun uniques and other stuff. Once you hit 70~+ in maps these all disappear and you just get a bunch of random currency and other unusable things.

Basically I just learned a lot about efficiency and I also realized that I don't want to be any more efficient than I am. I'm a fast player and I could definitely go faster but it'd be at the cost of enjoyment. There's a ton more mechanical stuff I learned while watching but I can't think of many more.

Hope this helped someone =) Would love to hear any more 'obvious' tips.
