Why 2% spawn rate is BAD and why average numbers can be deceiving

    Posted: 05 May 2021 07:31 AM PDT

I created fast and dirty C++ simulation to recreate completing Trialmaster encounters with 2% to get to wave 10 (in ideal conditions: all players always complete everything, never die/fail/leave for trades). Average numbers might look completely fine on a surface, but in reality with such a low probability of spawn almost ALL players are GUARANTEED to get unlucky streak for multiple trialmasters.

First case, we have 400k active players, running around 30 t14+ maps every day for 3 months straight:

    Total maps = 2500

    Total players = 400000

Total trialmasters for all players = 20018438 (2.00184%)

Average trialmaster for all players took 50 maps

Average trialmasters for all players = 50

    Best trialmaster took 1 maps

    Worst trialmaster took 812 maps

    Trialmasters below 10 maps = 3050539 (15.2386%)

    Trialmasters below 50 maps = 12584583 (62.865%)

    Trialmasters above 75 maps = 4347867 (21.7193%)

    Trialmasters above 100 maps = 2595920 (12.9676%)

    Trialmasters above 150 maps = 925037 (4.62092%)

    Trialmasters above 200 maps = 329250 (1.64473%)

    Trialmasters above 500 maps = 641 (0.00320205%)

Players that had at least one trialmaster below 2 maps = 7823 (1.95575%)

Players that had at least one trialmaster below 10 maps = 399517 (99.8792%)

Players that had at least one trialmaster below 50 maps = 400000 (100%)

Players that had at least one trialmaster above 75 maps = 400000 (100%)

Players that had at least one trialmaster above 100 maps = 399968 (99.992%)

Players that had at least one trialmaster above 150 maps = 374248 (93.562%)

Players that had at least one trialmaster above 200 maps = 235201 (58.8002%)

Players that had at least one trialmaster above 500 maps = 641 (0.16025%)

Second case, we have 100k active players, running around 15 t14+ maps 6 days a week for 1.5 months:

    Total maps = 600

    Total players = 100000

Total trialmasters for all players = 1201730 (2.00288%)

Average trialmaster for all players took 50 maps

Average trialmasters for all players = 12

    Best trialmaster took 1 maps

    Worst trialmaster took 550 maps

    Trialmasters below 10 maps = 195308 (16.2522%)

    Trialmasters below 50 maps = 784229 (65.2583%)

    Trialmasters above 75 maps = 235290 (19.5793%)

    Trialmasters above 100 maps = 134819 (11.2187%)

    Trialmasters above 150 maps = 44107 (3.67029%)

    Trialmasters above 200 maps = 14186 (1.18046%)

    Trialmasters above 500 maps = 9 (0.00074892%)

Players that had at least one trialmaster below 2 maps = 2051 (2.051%)

Players that had at least one trialmaster below 10 maps = 82402 (82.402%)

Players that had at least one trialmaster below 50 maps = 99635 (99.635%)

Players that had at least one trialmaster above 75 maps = 98233 (98.233%)

Players that had at least one trialmaster above 100 maps = 85089 (85.089%)

Players that had at least one trialmaster above 150 maps = 39723 (39.723%)

Players that had at least one trialmaster above 200 maps = 13915 (13.915%)

Players that had at least one trialmaster above 500 maps = 9 (0.009%)

TL:DR: Even if average for a trialmaster is 50 maps across all league (in ideal conditions, always completing every single encounter to maximum possible wave), almost every single player is expected to have unlucky 100-150+ maps streaks between trialmasters, and some individuals might have even 500+ encounters completed without seeing a single trialmaster.

    Eliminate loading times (Nvidia)

    Posted: 05 May 2021 10:01 AM PDT

So I found out yesterday that if you turn off Shader Cache, the loading times are almost completely gone. You can find it in Control panel -> 3D settings and try for yourself.

Don't know about AMD cards tho and couldn't see this posted before.

EDIT: Turning it off seems to give better results with 980 TI, 1070 or 1080. It's the same issue for another game (Rocket League) so it's most likely driver related.

Scammers really ruined the game for me.

Scammers really ruined the game for me.

I messaged a guy who was selling Xoph Nurture for 4.9ex. I traded him 4 ex and 140c but he told me to trade 130c. 1ex was about 150c so maybe I thought he was a nice guy to charge lesser. He reinitiated trade but swap with a non 6 links. I didnt realised it until I was socketing my gems.

As a casual player, I play only at night after work and this is currently all the currency I have saved since league started. I thought I was finally able to afford a 6-Link but this has really ruined this league for me. I wished GGG can provide some sort of support to curb on these scammers.

Light Radius is a stupid mechanic

    Posted: 05 May 2021 01:58 AM PDT

Don't understand why low-life builds have to invest a passive point to be able to see lab traps. Stupid and archaic design.

The state of the league mechanic for me, no idea how it affects the ping so much ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I feel like a lot of people aren't really burnt out on X league, they're just burnt out on PoE in general

    Posted: 05 May 2021 12:47 PM PDT

Every league, I see a lot of different complaints come up for why the game isn't as fun as it used to be, and in some cases, those complaints may even be valid, but I feel like in a lot of cases, those players have just had enough of PoE period. They're trying to find reasons to keep playing when they've clearly just exhausted most of their interest in the game. So when X league comes along that doesn't reinvigorate their passion, it's inevitably a disappointment.

I've seen this happen tons of times across a variety of MMOs, competitive games, you name it. People get past the point where they play a game for fun, and they start doing it just out of habit and because they honestly don't know what else to do after sinking so much time into one game.

If you truly feel like PoE isn't fun for you anymore, you may want to consider that it's not because of the Atlas grind or Harvest or Ultimatum or any of that. You might just need a long break from PoE in general.

No game stays fun forever. Even professional sports players who devoted their entire lives to one game often eventually grow tired of it.

Taking a step back from this community.

    Posted: 05 May 2021 02:18 PM PDT

I'm actively enjoying the league and during work hours I actively browse this Reddit hoping to see fun community post but the majority of the post are just people shitting on GGG claiming they're trying to kill their own game or some other nonsense.

I'm probably going to get downvoted and told "bye" but either way, I'm feeling pretty down at the lack of positivity and people to share my joy for the game with. I'm done fighting the battle to make this place less toxic, you win.

Don't know if this is a common thing, but I felt pretty lucky (2ex)

    Posted: 05 May 2021 10:11 AM PDT

Why do we have to spend passives/resources to make content more FUN? Just speed up the Blight and Breach already.

    Posted: 05 May 2021 02:48 AM PDT

I know time is a resource too in PoE and It's all about the resource management but does "more fun" have to come with a price too?

Instead of speeding up passives may be you can make :

+%25 chance to drop 1 level higher oil drop for Blight and +2/+3 more hands for Breach.

Being able to set our own disconnect timer is too confusing to new players, so instead we get this

    Posted: 05 May 2021 03:46 AM PDT

    "Basically, yea... "

    Posted: 05 May 2021 08:13 AM PDT

My daughter's 7 year old friend was over yesterday, and wanted to watch me play my game a little.

After watching for about 5 minutes, they said: So basically you just walk around, and that is winning?

I tried to articulate a counter-argument, but after a minute or too, all I could do is say: "Basically, yea..."

Even with the most unlucky RNG, getting to Sirus is still faster than getting a trialmaster fight

    Posted: 05 May 2021 09:41 AM PDT

Devs confirmed that the Trialmaster fight is 1 in 50. So first we have to consider that you don't die in a single ultimatum and then you get Trialmaster in 50 fights, okay.

Now sirus. Let's say we're pretty unlucky and every conqueror gives us 9 maps to complete, with additional 3 to trigger a conqueror in a given region. That's 12 maps times 4 conquerors = 48 maps considering we're pretty unlucky.

That's still quicker than getting a Trialmaster (who will probably offer you 5 chaos)

    This is just not fun

Looking for some discussion and debate, but does POE feel like it's asking for more and more time from its players to get to the real end game now ?

    Posted: 04 May 2021 01:05 PM PDT

I've had this nagging feeling for awhile.

I'm fortunate I have more spare time than most and can put over 40 hrs a week into this game if I want to. But it is feeling like that 40 hrs today you barely get to the same place as before.

Before in league starts I would comfortably get to what I considered end game in about a week or so of grinding (old atlas) . Now it feels like that is impossible with 2 weeks of playing at the same speed . (Yes some can do it faster.)

I remember watching mathil after week 1 in this league and he still had not much done in his atlas. Granted it was a lot. And it was a lot more than most of us could dream of in the same amount of time.

I'm far from a casual player. Though I wouldn't consider myself in the top % range as I do play builds a little slower than most. But even with that said I almost always could finish up my atlas by the end of week two. Now it feels like I gotta push way harder than before to come close.

I know GGG wants us to spend more time in game, but it's starting to feel like most of that time requirement is filler now.

I mostly focus on atlas stuff. I don't bother with Heist or delve. Which would take more time away from getting to where I want.

I hope to spur rational and respectful debate on both sides of this.
