Something exciting in the patchnotes turned out to be bad

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 09:30 AM PDT

GGG said they change the reward system for league specific drops like catalysts oils and so on. Initially i was very excited for these changes as i think the best way to get stuff should be through that leagues specific content. But in the end it just made every ressource rarer because they didnt buff the league specific mechanics droprate they just removed the rare and good league specific drops from other league mechanics. But the problem was never that u could get all the stuff from every league mechanic it was that the parent league was so bad for acquiring these items while others were to powerful. So in the end they made the rewards on other leagues worse but the parent league is still the same.

Giving us something we like, then taking it away saps all the fun out of the game

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 09:19 PM PDT

    Maybe it's just me?

But 3.13 to 3.14 was the biggest cliff i've ever felt playing PoE ever.

They gave us harvest, which i enjoyed to thoroughly to fine tune my character. 3.14, all but gone.

They gave us brand new atlas expansion with new and fun nodes. 3.14, many enjoyable aspects were hit.

With my stronger and much more heavily invested (harvest 3.13) than otherwise character, I could really push my build with fractured map farming. 3.14, not gone but the tedium is insane and the reward is no longer there.

I don't really play super meta skills that get nerfed, so this never really affects me.

Some other mundane things are, feared rotations, mid league item balance, mid league stealth nerfs (cough zana, cough harvest, cough auspicious x2)

Things that apply to std players would be items that you can't get anymore, items you can't farm anymore, mechanics you can't access anymore. E.g synth, leg affix, harvest crafted.

Edit something extra things: removed underground mods, removed fossil mechanics, removed temple mods, old legion 5 ways, simulacrum pre nerf, unique item nerfs (starfor..?), even talismans, late 3.10 delirium fps and fps now, glancing blows, divine flesh, Vaal Pact, 6%->3%, Gladiatorial Combat, Deep Cuts, Intensity, Confident Combatant, No Witnesses, removed synth mods (+1 all gem bow),

All in all, i felt like 3.13 ritual was a very average league, but an amazing expansion. My time felt well spent/rewarded. Endgame was challenging but rewarding (non-metaslave). Progression was visible. The power of harvest really let me choose and create niche builds that would normally be too difficult to gear.

3.14 feels bland in comparison, the spark is gone.

    I miss 3.13

Which flask do you think would taste best?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 07:28 AM PDT

Health flasks, mana flasks, utility flasks, UNIQUE FLASKS: we have all been chugging them nonstop the last 8 years and I am sure we all have been thinking the same things the whole time, "the wise oak looks like one hell of a mixed drink", "the dying sun is the forbidden sunny D", "when will powerade release their vessel of vinktar limited edition of blue flavor?", and most importantly, "damn, taste of hate looks refreshing."

But here we are in ultimatum league with the ultimate question: "Which flask tastes the best, and why is everyone else wrong?"

Exhaustive List Of Reasons Ultimatum Retention Is Low [Sarcasm]

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 03:25 AM PDT

A certain post has shown up on the front page of the Path of Exile subreddit, which has shown that currently, retention is lower than ever. Some people are surprised at that. So let me explain to you, clearly and directly, an exhaustive list of reasons retention is low.

    • You are reading the diagram wrong. There are clearly more absolute players still playing than in Synthesis and Blight. Those were the best expansions, as everyone sees the crafts from these leagues as mandatory nowadays, so clearly, Ultimatum is going to be mandatory good stuff too.

    • You are playing the wrong skills. The skills the majority of people are using got nerfed, so statistically, you are playing a nerfed skill. You would not have quit if you picked a different skill, like one of the good ones. So statistically, the majority would not have quit if the majority picked a good skill.

    • You are burnt out. Path of Exile has been out for almost eight years, and playing a game for eight years causes burnout of a severe degree. Statistically, that means that the majority of the playerbase is suffering from burnout. It has nothing to do with Ultimatum League itself.

    • Your PC isn't good enough. Graphics cards and most computer hardware is hard to come by these days, and unless you pay a scalper, you won't get an upgrade. Most cannot afford paying more for a graphics card or a processor or more ram, and supply is low due to limited manufacturing, which means, the majority of people do not have a PC that is good enough.

    • You are relying on trade too much. Solo Self Found has glowing reviews from players that say it feels liberating and makes the game more fun, but statistically, at least 10% of the playerbase is trading, and therefore not playing SSF. They wouldn't quit if they hadn't relied on such a boring thing as trade.

    • You rely on crafting too much. Checking Site viewership via Similarweb puts the pageviews for the Path of Exile website at 30 Million. Then, poedb has 5 million, and craftofexile has another 1 million. This means that 20% of the players are obsessed with crafting. Crafting, as many people already said, is gambling, and isn't fun. So statistically, 20% of players are not having fun, and thus quit.

    • You want too much free stuff. Now that Harvest ist gone again - Item Editor at large - players will not like to play as much. But how much do players actually get free items? Well, checking a known site (not named for obvious reasons) gets us a rate of about 17k trade offers. Comparing this number with the SteamDB player data of people at the start of the league (~150,000 players), we realize how bad it is. About 11.33% of all players in the league do RMT, and as RMT ruins the fun of the game, 11.33% of all players were going to quit Ultimatum, no matter how good the League was going to be.

    • You switched to a competitor. Last major release got pushed back due to a lackluster indie game called Cyberpunk 2077. This league, perhaps by development oversight, the developers decided to deploy this league on April 15th... about 2 weeks before the release of the new Pokémon Snap. This league had no chance of ever surviving against the behemoth that is Pokémon, and the losses in playercount are evidently not the fault of the league itself, but rather a statistical cost they could have expected.

    • You are playing this game with friends too much. Group play got nerfed and heavily penalized, as seen by all the posts on reddit. If you play with friends or in a farming group, you statistically got frustrated and quit this league.

    • You are playing this game alone too much. Solo play got nerfed and heavily penalized, as seen by all the posts on reddit. If you play without friends or without ROTAs, you statistically got frustrated and quit this league.

    • You got too much QoL. A key design philosophy braking many Features declared Quality of Life are disregarded because they would lead to quicker gameplay, and thus to faster burnout or even permanent quitting. This league, Path of Exile got not only plenty of Quality of Life in form of tradable temples, new currency, better loot tables and the addition of Headhunter into a normal drop poo, we also got index searching. This makes craft, mapping and probably even trading way too easy, and as prophesized, led to burnout.

    • You got chase items too fast. In earlier leagues, Atziri's Mirror was an expensive unique and the top of the Fated Unique foodchain. When you rolled Prophecy, this was what you wanted to get. Then, a few days before the League was out, a post on this subreddit detailed a strategy to block common Prophecies and to use a Character on a certain level to maximize the chances of getting good prophecies. Because of this (and absolutely no other reason) Atziri's Mirror plummeted into cheapness. Similarily, Headhunter could now be farmed more easily, as it was now a normal drop. Thus, chase items were easy to obtain.

    • You forced the developers to support Race leagues. Some time ago, there was a clear statement that Race leagues lowered playercount, especially if they were multiple ones in short bursts. Since then, the developers got backlash for having some community figures pay out of pocket for Race leagues hosted in private servers. This league, the developers thus were forced to aid for hosting, making the Race league official. This statistically results in a drop in player numbers.

    • You hang out on Reddit too much. SteamDB said at League Start, there were a maximum of 154,917 players playing. The Path of Exile Subreddit has 439,084 readers. This means that about 283.43% of the playerbase at the start is on Reddit. Reddit and it's community is repeatedly stated to be abusive to Chris Wilson, other Deveopers and Community figures at Grinding Gear Games and it's shareholder Tencent, to the point that there is a lingering fear that communication with Reddit will stop entirely. And thus, it is quite clear that this community will quit the game, meaning we can expect the current player count to go to -284.167 in the future. I myself am excited to see that day, as I am evidently a Redditor, too.

    • You are vaccinated. The last leagues, Heist and Ritual, were record breakers, and it has been speculated that this was on the fact that the pandemic and the resulting Lockdown resulted in high player numbers as gamers had no other choice but to play and keep playing - there was nothing else to do. For others, they were tasked to work at home, which allowed them to log hours doing aforementioned trading in their downtime. Now, the vaccination process is running (more or less) smoothly, and lockdowns are slowly but surely lifted across the world. Even more than that, those companies employing Home Office work have since reneged on their plans and ordered their workers back into the office buildings. The result is statistically evident - with time passing, the player numbers will dwindle.

    • You are dying. The process of death, in which a living person turns into a dead one, is inevitable, and it is estimated that every 5.25 seconds a person perishes forever. In this case, it will take our current SteamDB playerrate about 28.43 hours to dwindle to 0. As a consolation prize, in about 26.68 days the population of the Path of Exile will also have dwindled to 0 as well, so the developers will be safe. (People keep telling me that the developers are not playing the game, so they wouldn't be in the player statistics, right?)

This concludes my exhaustive list of reasons why the player retention seems so low compared to other leagues. If you think there are more reasons, you may suggest them in the comment section, but they are wrong - this list is exhaustive, after all.

Note: This post is satire and not to be taken seriously in any regard. Any perceived attack on developers, game companies, players or communities are not to be taken in earnest and are for entertainment purposes only. This post does not condone staff abuse, RMT, shaming of casuals, shaming of elites or other forms of harassment. All statistics in this post are to be regarded as the senseless conjecture they are and not to be quoted as fact.

    Help me I'm stuck

After laughing the past 15 minutes over this with my wife, I decided to share with the world. So I traded with someone, then about a minute later I hear my chat going off, to my confusion, I came back to find this guy somehow stuck inside my map device begging me for help. The whole chat convo is in the screen shot, I thought someone else might find this hilarious.
