I started playing POE in 2014. The game was easier then.

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 09:30 AM PDT

Not that anyone really cares, but to give my "resume", I have logged tens of thousands of hours on POE, I have played every league that guarantees free MTX since that time, and I have done at least 36 challenges in almost every single 40 challenge leagues. I say that to emphasize that I've been present the entire time. Since I started playing POE I haven't missed anything major. I've read every patch note, I've played every league start.

I apologize for being long-winded, but the TLDR is in the title. The rest is just an explanation. I've had similar conversations about challenges, and I understand that some people will bring up things before my time, back when challenge leagues asked you to do near impossible things. I understand that when Act 2 was the end game, Act 1 and 2 must have been brutal, but that was the entire game. The limited content had to be tedious and trying. I can't speak much to the game prior to when I started playing beyond that though.

I understand the concept is difficulty is somewhat relative, but when I say easier, I have some specific examples in mind. In Torment league (late 2014), I played a cyclone Facebreaker. It remains one of my best (relative to the content) and easiest-to-gear builds. It had all the elements you'd want, clear speed (elemental prolif), great single target, and great survivability (instant leech). I have played a better build, for instance, the utterly broken aura stacker in Delirium, but this FB build was using easy and affordable methods to trivialize the content. It was absurdly easy to gear, I barely knew what I was doing but this was before jewels, influenced items, temple, betrayal, etc... It was simpler than a lot of leagues start/day 1 in maps type setups but it was doing end game with ease. I was still a newbie but I rapidly went from dock runs to face tanking the Palace boss (at the time the top-level map and one of the tougher bosses).

I started in Rampage (2014), but I was solo self-found on a PC with 2 GB of ram so it was kind of tough. It wasn't due to difficulty though. As a former D2 player I was scared to allocate skill points due to the permanence of them in Diablo 2, and I was also intimidated by the skill tree. So, I nearly made it to maps without allocating skill points. I know at one point I had more than 60 unallocated points. On my first build ever in Rampage league, I nearly made it to maps without really playing a build at all. If I'd been facing the seemingly insanely brutal previous incarnations of games it's unlikely that would have worked. I was playing SSF, so I was basically just picking crap up off the ground and killing stuff with it, with virtually no health and DPS. I think that experience would be much worse in the current iteration of the game.

I can't speak for the game before I started. But I can say in my opinion I think the game (QOL improvements aside) has actually become more difficult and more demanding. While I play casually, the truth is technically I'm in the 1%. My hours logged put me in the .001% but that's mostly AFK. However, I do lead a guild, I have reached 36 in almost every league, I have amassed a few stacks of mirrors. I don't represent a player who is ignorant of the game. I feel as though GGG actually demands more and more of me each league. Look at what the challenges (in 40 challenge leagues) used to be, they were so much easier! To give an example, in Breach league (2016) you could unlock the first MTX right about the time you reached maps.

Comparing the difficulty of individuals monsters back when act 2 was the end game isn't really a fair comparison in my mind. Yes, the game has sped up but look at how much more we're supposed to do to reach the same relative point in the game. Four labs to complete. 10 acts. To fully do the questline now you have to do Sirus and Maven. This ignores the side content like Delve, Heist, etc... It's just so much.

I'm a little perplexed by statements from GGG that seem to hearken back to days when the entirety of the game was less than 10% of what it is now. Yes of course they had to have tough combat back then, but we have over ten times as much to do now! It can't be at the same pace, each fight can't have the same difficulty! I can't give GGG ten times as much of my time as I used to. The trend I've experienced is I have to do more and more and overcome more and more to reach the same point. That's not easier for me. Not only that but objectively speaking Torment and Rampage leagues were just flat out easier than Ultimatum, and I'm comparing 2014 POE to 2021 POE.

I understand for a small percentage of elite players, the game does seem to be getting easier. Racers improve their times and so on. This is a trend we see virtually everywhere where people are pushing themselves to their limits. Track and field records continue to be broken, but does that mean that gravity is getting easier to overcome? No, it just means a small group of elite people push themselves further, it's not really reflective of the general population.

GGG has done a decent job of balancing the game over time in my opinion. That Facebreaker build might have been too easy, and they nerfed just about every aspect of it, in some cases multiple times. I'm not here to complain about that. What I am here to point out though is that overall GGG has consistently asked more and more of us. Not only that, but one-shots have become more common not less, and that's one reason why I actually knew more people playing hardcore way back in 2014 when I first started playing than I do now in 2021 where I run my own guild and POE discord channel. Does that sound like a game that actually got easier?

I understand making the game challenging, but the current state of the game (I'm speaking of last league not even the upcoming nerfs) really is the most challenging the game has ever been from my perspective. Every time I try to introduce someone who has been away for a while, it's become harder and harder to bring them up to speed and once they get going they have more than ever before to do.

If GGG wants to bring things back to the state of the game in closed beta, the first place to start is to strip out some of the tedium and be less demanding of the players in other areas. If we exchange that for more difficult fights I can understand the logic, but I got hooked on a game that wasn't nearly as demanding as the game is now.

    WHAT IS THIS

WHY HAVE WE NOT HEARD ABOUT THIS UNTIL NOW

It is not fun to die to something because you are rendered physically incapable of getting out of its way.

It is not fun when "dodgeable" one-shots, no matter your defenses, usually post monster death, are the main source of threat.

One of these has to change. It doesn't look like either is planned.

    GGG tech support

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 04:29 AM PDT

So for a long time I've wanted to both support GGG (and look good) with buying a armor pack from the micro store, I sold a CS:GO knife I have had for a while and bought my points. I thought I had scoured the shop good enought to have seen some good outfits and such, but lo was I wrong.

I bought the "OIblivion" pack (And even got 1 weap pack) and was on my way leveling an alt in the end of the league. I was happy for sure, but something in the back of my head was telling me "hey...look through the store again" and so I did... and then I saw it, "Elder pack"... and jeez was it more of my style.

But out of money, points and luck (so I thought) I went to send a longshot of an email to GGG. In the mail I just wrote that it might be a longshot, but could you please remove the Oblivion pack and change it to the elderpack?
and not even 10min later I got a mail, saying that I had gotten a refund on my points, and sure as hell I got the Elder instead.

Sure GGG got a lot of shit here on reddit about the nerfs, but goddamn thier support was fast and good!
