I just stayed up until 5 am playing this damn game.

My first character was shit. We don't talk about her. But I started playing a fire witch and last night things clicked. Where to put gems, which skills made sense, which items I had to keep. I glanced up somewhere in the middle of act four and saw the sun was rising. What have you done to me.

just lost my [hc] character, but I really like this game

    Posted: 02 Jun 2019 06:14 AM PDT

I'm a casual HC player of this game. IDK any acronyms or the culture of this game yet.

i had a level 39 scion i just lost in the aspirants trial. I killed dominus then went back to the trial to become an "ascendant". There was some kind of buzz saw that forced me into a corner, and a giant yellow skeleton who had "powerful crits" and then I took like 5 crits in a row, which outpaced my flask.
I had a ton of evasion and it's my first time using an evasion character, which was pretty fun, I used storm brand and ethereal knives for damage, but probably should have gotten some kind of defensive abilities too.

I had no idea how important flasks are. They feel like the most important thing. Evasion is pretty sick too. I like it way more than energy shield for I guess the 3 main "defenses" of armor/es/evasion. Gotta make it to 45 a few quests in act 4 next.

How my HC characters died: 35 Maurader: I stood on the hot oven in the act 3 labyrinth and didnt see that my health was decreasing*
38 witch: I thought an enemy's death animation was just taking a long time, but then he exploded and 1 shot me 22 Witch: My video card went dark and I died LOL 18 Witch: I was dumb 39 Scion: explained above.

Thanks for reading. Great game. T

Can we get mtx mannequins for hideouts for decoration?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2019 05:01 AM PDT

This has probably been requested a million times but I'd love to be able to hang up my mtxs and decorate my hideouts with them.

This one's a stretch but maybe even have an option where you can interact with the mannequin and equip all the items on it like a little walk in wardrobe lmao

3.6 Meta Report — Winter Has Come (and Gone?)

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 11:07 PM PDT

There's a summary at the bottom!

    Introduction

As with my previous entries, this is a fairly relaxed and mathematically flaky look at the meta of Synthesis and how it compares to Betrayal. All data are sourced (with permission) from http://poe.ninja/builds, meaning that there is an unavoidable bias towards builds that are fast and/or preferred by dedicated, experienced players. Unfortunately, unless you're GGG this is the best data set we have. Only the softcore trade leagues are examined (it's all I have time to do with my current methodology).

This is a pretty crazy meta, as most of you are no doubt aware, so let's dive in.

    Ascendancy Breakdown

Just a reminder: the two ascendancy classes that were heavily changed in 3.6.0 were Trickster and Inquisitor.

Ascendancy Betrayal % Synthesis % Diff ↓ Fold Change
    Trickster 0.8% 28.7% +27.95 37.30
    Occultist 15.6% 22.5% +6.87 1.44
    Inquisitor 1.4% 3.9% +2.56 2.89
    Gladiator 1.2% 1.2% +.01 1.01
    Berserker 0.1% 0.1% -.06 0.57
    Guardian 1.6% 1.5% -.09 0.94
    Raider 1.2% 1.0% -.19 0.83
    Chieftain 0.5% 0.3% -.23 0.55
    Necromancer 1.7% 1.3% -.40 0.76
    Slayer 0.5% 0.1% -.40 0.26
    Pathfinder 3.6% 3.0% -.62 0.83
    Deadeye 5.2% 4.2% -1.00 0.81
    Champion 2.2% 1.1% -1.07 0.51
    Hierophant 3.0% 1.0% -1.99 0.34
    Elementalist 16.5% 14.0% -2.55 0.85
    Juggernaut 11.5% 7.5% -4.01 0.65
    Assassin 6.8% 2.2% -4.65 0.32
    Saboteur 7.7% 1.5% -6.25 0.19
    Ascendant 18.9% 5.0% -13.87 0.27

First things first, this is by far the least diverse spread of ascendancies that has existed since I started doing these in Bestiary. Never before has a single class accounted for more than 20% of characters, and this league there are two of them! Trickster and Occultist combined make up pretty much exactly half of the meta between them, which is really something. I'd previously joked about any class hovering around 1% usage or less being Berserker Tier™ (I guess I'm going to have to find a new name for that), but fully half of the ascendancies are there this time around. This includes some classes generally considered to be absolutely fine, like Necromancer and Saboteur. The bandwagon effect has been heavier this league than ever, and we'll get a bit more into that later.

Trickster's crazy usage is quite a fluke. To the best of my knowledge, it's been caused by four things at once. Firstly, the changes he received vastly improved his defensive bonuses and made him a very reasonable "generic" option for almost any caster build. Secondly, the popularity of channelling skills this league went hand in hand with Swift Killer's newly added synergy with channelling. Thirdly, he's one of the two best options for the new chaos DoT skills, which have proven extremely popular with players. Finally, the newly released Eternity Shroud has been extremely meta-defining this league (more on that later), and Trickster is generally considered to be the best class to utilise it. That's really a lot of factors coming together at the same time, and I would be surprised if we see another class get close to 30% again any time soon.

Occultist, unlike Trickster, has been doing well for a couple of leagues now. She's the default choice for most energy shield-based builds so gets a fairly high level of usage automatically from that. Last league's cold DoT archetype is still proving popular, and she's the only choice for that style of build. In addition, random spell builds going CI pick Occultist just for Wicked Ward and Vile Bastion, so the prevalence of spell builds this league has helped. The main new boost, though, is the popularity of Bane and Soulrend, newly introduced in 3.6. GGG primarily pushed Trickster builds using them, but obviously they fit very very well on Occultist too, especially Bane.

Inquisitor is the only other class that has gone up in usage. You'd hope so given the fairly substantial changes he got this patch, but it was a very modest increase. While he's a viable choice for just about any spellcaster build and some elemental attack builds too, there's definitely a perception of him as a weaker Trickster right now, since the meta has shifted away from being desperate for ways to deal with elemental resistance and Trickster's new defensive nodes are more potent than Inquisitor's new consistent regeneration.

Every other class has fallen in popularity. Most of these seem to just be people playing Occultists and Tricksters over anything else, but it's worth mentioning Ascendant in particular since she has really crashed and burned, losing almost 75% of her popularity compared to Betrayal after a couple of leagues in first place. As a refresher, while Ascendant is a viable pick for almost any build, she's mainly been used recently for crit elemental attack builds utilising her easy jewel socket access and Slayer leech. And indeed, big nerfs to Slayer leech in 3.6 seem to be mostly responsible for the popularity drop. In 3.5 about 75% of Ascendants took Slayer. In 3.6 only 25% of them did. She remains popular for Elemental Hit, presumably since it's harder for Deadeyes to make the jewels work, but that's about it.

Finally, despite losing ground, Elementalist and Juggernaut are still very popular classes overall. Elementalist is of course an obvious choice for most elemental spellcasters, even though Trickster has stolen some space from her thanks to the "extra chaos" meta. Juggernaut, on the other hand, has been just about the only melee class anyone wants to play for a couple of leagues now, just as Molten Strike is about the only melee attack anyone considers strong enough to use. Let's see how that changes next league!

Primary Damage Skill Rankings — The Top 50 of Synthesis

"Rank" here is based on popularity alone, i.e. rank 1 means the skill used by the largest number of characters. This is also using poe.ninja's criterion of only counting 5- and 6-linked skills, which is imperfect but about as good as you can feasibly get. Note that this does include links granted by items.

You all already know about Winter Orb. It's been so dominant that I have a whole section for it at the end of this post, so I'm not going to talk about it here. The majority of the rest of the changes are all about those chaos skills. Soulrend and Bane have proven incredibly popular, and due to the nature of chaos DoT builds they've also dragged up Essence Drain, Blight and co with them. The Essence Drain/Contagion archetype has been popular pretty much since it was released, so from all this it's pretty clear that chaos DoT is a playstyle that people really enjoy and a lot of people have jumped on the new ways to play it. It's also always nice to have new skills that become super popular without being overpowered!

Divine Ire is also doing well, even if its popularity has fallen heavily since the beginning of the league. The ability to charge up and fire a massive laser is something everyone went crazy about as soon as the skill was teased, and it seems like GGG were able to follow through on the appealling concept and make it actually feel good to play too, which was by no means guaranteed given how clunky it could have felt in PoE's fast-paced environment. Purifying Flame is the final new skill that shows up on the table, holding its own as a solid "traditional" spell with enough AoE and damage to be worth using.

New stuff and chaos DoT accessories aside, all the other skills sporting big increases in popularity are ones that got buffed in 3.6.0, so that makes sense! Most of the falls seem essentially random, with the notable exception of Arc. It received a fairly heavy nerf to its AoE clearing ability and has very much fallen off the top spot for "traditional" spells. Finally, it's been interesting to watch Herald of Agony slowly continue to grow in popularity and spread to more classes. I wonder whether that will continue.

As usual, I'm only covering the top 100 here because there 925 uniques in PoE right now, and that's way too many to show. About 250 of them aren't even used by a single character in the sample.

    Allelopathy 226 100 +126

There are a lot of uniques that have risen hugely in popularity this time around, but they're actually pretty simple to categorise. Solstic Vigil is fantastic for Winter Orb builds, substantially reducing the percentage of time you need to spend channelling to maintain your stacks. All the other big winners are either good items for ES builds (which makes sense given the Trickster buffs, Eldritch Battery buffs, and the general pairing of ES builds with caster builds); good evasion items for Tricksters; and/or good items for chaos DoT builds. Meanwhile, stuff that was nerfed or is associated with melee lost ground. Before we check out the biggest winners and losers, I'd just like to point out the significance of Wise Oak dropping from spot 2, because it really shows what a significant impact the "extra chaos" meta has had on devaluing elemental resistance penetration.

This is actually pretty cool in my opinion. Usually only two or three brand-new uniques make it onto this list each patch, but this time a whopping six have (even if two of them are basically the same item). Bottled Faith and Eternity Shroud have instantly become serious chase items, and more of those is usually a good thing for the game (RIP Bottled Faith in 3.7). That said, there has been a lot of talk about Eternity Shroud, extra chaos mods on weapons, and how abusive they are (especially paired with damage conversion), so it wouldn't surprise me if they all get nerfed pretty soon. Aside from the new items, it's three chaos DoT items and one Trickster evasion item. Yup, sounds about right!

    Pure Talent 60 119 -59
    Combat Focus 37 94 -57

On the losing side, well, it had to happen sometime. After an amazing run, longtime favourite The Poet's Pen finally got nerfed into the ground and has fallen out of use. Pure Talent, Combat Focus, Mark of the Elder and Hopeshredder all fell with Ascendant losing so much popularity, as discussed above. Clear Mind is a casualty of the Eldritch Battery buffs, since Mind over Matter builds that reserve no mana are no longer nearly as common. Cospri's Malice, Esh's Mirror and Atziri's Acuity are all common components of autobomber builds, which Winter Orb has been competing very successfully with for ridiculous clear speed. Hale Negator... I honestly have no idea about. Please let me know in the comments if you do!

    Occultist 22.5% 10.4% -12.07 0.46

Two things tend to happen in these events when it comes to class choice, and both are really well represented here. Firstly, the extra mobs to kill and general "race" structure of the event encourages people to play fast-clearing builds. Secondly, the prize structure at the top end, where the top ten players of each class get a reward, encourages people to play unpopular classes, especially ones that can clear fast. You can see all this very neatly in the table. Popular classes that are fast get more popular, as everyone jumps on the bandwagon. Popular classes that aren't very fast get much less popular. Unpopular classes generally get more popular, and the less popular they are and faster you can make them clear, the bigger that increase is.

We can also look at skill popularity. I'm just going to show the top ten damage skills of flashback here.

    Skill Synthesis Flashback ↓ Diff
    Winter Orb 30.7% 39.9% +9.18
    Soulrend 8.4% 5.3% -3.04
    Storm Brand 3.6% 4.3% +.73
    Herald of Agony 5.6% 4.0% -1.68
    Bane 8.2% 4.0% -4.27
    Ice Spear 1.4% 3.7% +2.25
    Essence Drain 3.4% 2.7% -.67
    Blade Vortex 1.8% 2.5% +.67
    Cyclone 2.7% 2.3% -.33
    Lightning Spire Trap 1.3% 2.3% +.94

Again, fast = popular in flashback. Winter Orb might have already been dominant in Synthesis, but it's even more so in flashback as it's pretty much perfect for the event. Storm Brand and Blade Vortex are also speedy and so get a popularity bump. The other big skills are still popular, since not everyone playing is trying to go as fast as possible, but enough people are trying that the slower-clearing skills lose a lot of play compared to Synthesis.

Just to be clear on the table, by the way, Ice Spear and Lightning Spire Trap don't represent builds or archetypes by themselves. Ice Spear is almost exclusively used as part of what's become known as the Winter Unleasher build alongside Winter Orb, and equally Lightning Spire Trap is used by Winter Orb or Storm Brand builds looking to boost their single target DPS. That said, I do want to give a shout-out to Champion Ice Spear totems, a weird but effective and very cool build that uses Ice Spear on its own.

    ...Winter Orb

I can't not spend some time talking about this skill by itself. It is the most popular skill in high-level play since I have started doing these. With over 30% usage in Synthesis and almost 40% in flashback, it might be the most popular skill ever. I don't know for sure. What I can say is that it's not surprising, since it's arguably the strongest skill ever to exist in Path of Exile. Ranged, autotargeting, high AoE, works without being held down, and enough damage not to suffer against bosses. It also benefitted from the channelling buffs in 3.6 and the insane damage potential of Eternity Shroud. Just for fun before it gets nerfed in 3.7, here's a table showing how far Winter Orb has spread.

Ascendancy Synthesis WOrb Count Flashback WOrb Count
    Ascendant 70 49
    Assassin 89 92
    Berserker 0 12
    Champion 1 2
    Chieftain 0 4
    Deadeye 14 16
    Elementalist 1721 2086
    Gladiator 0 0
    Guardian 2 2
    Hierophant 5 17
    Inquisitor 198 119
    Juggernaut 9 9
    Necromancer 0 5
    Occultist 528 158
    Pathfinder 65 49
    Raider 2 12
    Saboteur 0 1
    Slayer 1 14
    Trickster 2275 2501

Yeah that's right. Berserker WOrb, Necromancer WOrb, Saboteur WOrb, bring it on. I'm very disappointed some Demigod-hungry flashback player didn't go Gladiator WOrb and complete the set, honestly.

    Summary

    • Winter Orb is good and people noticed. Hope you tried it while you had the chance.

    • The ascendancy class meta was very unbalanced, with Trickster and Occultist absolutely dominating due to their versatility and fitting in well with this league's good/popular skills.

    • Of GGG's promoted archetypes for 3.6, chaos DoT builds have been enthusiastically embraced and phys conversion casters have also done quite well.

    • There was only really one melee build that anyone played this league. Somehow I imagine that will be different next league.

    • The actual league mechanics might have promoted fast-clearing builds to some extent, but it's honestly hard to tell amidst all the other factors.

    • Winter Orb, Trickster and chaos DoT builds are directly or indirectly responsible for almost everything else that's happened to the meta.

    • Flashback players really want to go fast.

As always, thank you for reading these huge lumps of text, and please let me know if there's anything you think could be improved or that you would like to see in future threads. See you in three months when things should look very different!

Does anyone else think the end game fight against High Templar Venarius and the entire storyline of Synthesis were both awesome?

Seriously, I really enjoyed that part of 3.6. The memory where we discover that Cavas is actually High Templar Venarius and that he was the one who released the Elder. And then the actual fight in the Cortex memory. That was great!!
