One of powercreep's most regrettable aspects : weapon diversity. Suggestion : reinforce weapon identity

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 06:24 AM PDT

I still remember a time where if you wanted to play crit, daggers were the go-to weapon, mostly due to the innate crit chance. Harbinger bows were the best base by far because of the crit implicit. There was an argument to be made for axes, mostly in RT builds.

Now? Foils have more range and a crit mult implicit, in a world where it's extremely easy to cap accuracy with little to no investment due to the amount of accuracy on sword nodes & the Precision aura (where axes mostly still need to go RT in some cases). And sword nodes are extremely good in general, so no questions asked.

In short, if you use an attack skill that can be used with swords, it's likely better to use it by dual wielding foils.

(Also if you can sustain the mana, otherwise it's likely a gemini claw. Hello flicker strike.)

The prime culprit, this league, would obviously be Cyclone, but even then this has been happening for a while. The consistency of Foils prices being light years above every other base shows no hint of dropping - and why should it? They're clearly the best base in the game right now.

    ----------------------------------------------

So, the real question is : how is it possible to change that without breaking the game

There is no easy answer for that, imho. There are hints of what could be with support gems like close combat or shockwave, but I don't think they're build defining / useful enough to make someone switch from a foil to anything else.

One thing that could be a possible way to shake things up would be to use ailments to reinforce weapon identity. For example, give axes the exclusivity of melee bleed nodes (which would also allow axe bleed builds to not take a sword notable just for that, IJS) as well as actual implicits that focus on bleeding; something like can inflict an extra stack of bleeding (so 2 without CD, 9 with it) could be an option? idk. That, or generic bleed damage, or bleeds with this weapon deal damage 10% faster, that kind of stuff).

Daggers are thematically / skilltreetically (I just decided that's a word okay) aligned with poison. So push that even more, maybe ; poisons deal damage faster, poisons inflicted by critical strike with this weapon take 10% of your crit multiplier into account, that kind of stuff. Give us a reason to play dagger with direct poison damage, otherwise claws are generally going to be much better solely because of how good the sustain they give is.

For both daggers and axes, having implicit chance to poison is probably not the best idea, at least for high tier bases ; having it exist in normal/cruel tier bases could also be a way to make ailment-based leveling more realistic

Maces are where I'm at a complete loss. Stun is, to put it bluntly (heh) not the most appealing of mechanics in the current state of the game. Something that could work is make Stun carry either a damage reduction debuff or a damage amplification debuff based on stun duration that is applied for a while after the monster is stunned. The latter is kind of uninspired, I'll agree, as that's basically a physical shock, but meh.

In terms of weapon implicits, you could then have weapons that instead of reducing stun threshold, increase stun duration, or have things like "attacks with this weapon have 5% chance to deal double damage to stunned enemies", that kind of stuff (probably a bit long text for an implicit)

Staves… Yeah. I honestly don't know. Making them a block-centric weapon could be a thing, like, having effects like next attack after blocking deals more damage, but I honestly don't know what staves should be as non-casters weapons. Or maybe I should say "warstaves".

    -----------------------

Which brings me to my (last) point.

I really think we could use more base diversity

At this point, choosing a weapon base is easy, outside of some specific cases (like bleed builds where you'd probably prefer a Reaver or a Royal over a Siege axe, for their innate flat damage), you just take the one that has more dps. If it has a great implicit (jewelled foil), even better. But that implicit does nothing for the identity of the weapon, it's just "does it deal more damage? Yes => take it, no => don't take it."

One choice that is somewhat interesting is with one handed axes

Royal axe : 92.4 pdps, consistent damage, slow
Reaver's Axe : 91.2 pdps, inconsistent damage (but higher highs), slow

Siege Axe : 81.0 base pdps, consistent damage, fast

While for direct damage builds you generally want a siege axe (because of the importance of the flat damage rolls everywhere on your gear), for bleed builds as you only have a limited number of crimson dance stacks, you will rather want to hit hard, yknow? And then reaver's for gamblers (especially if you couple it with a Ryslatha's) while Royal is for the consistent dudes

But the fact that there's a choice to make is a good thing imho. On the other hand of the spectrum, with swords, it's like "Jewelled foil? Yeah, jewelled foil."

The massive lag spikes in Legion have nothing to do with your GPU or ISP, and everything to do with the instances themselves dying in a new way.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 07:32 AM PDT

These kinds of FPS and latency spikes are not new, but...

This has nothing to do with your GPU and everything to do with the instance dying.

Since about patch 3.4, issues with the instances have been showing in the games fps/latency graphs. This is because the servers themselves are struggling with the i/o events generated from individual game instances in a way they didn't prior to 3.4. We used to have all sorts of wickedly optimized particle effects and visual spam that would destroy any graphics card (burning ground anyone?), but GGG's taken some steps to rectify that (dynamic resolution works pretty well if you don't mind your game looking like an impressionist painting every once and a while).

GGG's servers have always had issues with player load, especially around launches. But since 3.4, there are a new set of performance issues specifically related to the i/o of each individual instance. Basically, if you were able to host your own instance locally, you wouldn't encounter any of these issues.

The issue is that this is exactly what GGG do to test the performance of their game. They host their testing servers locally. It's okay to do that for development, but not for performance testing. They also have a separate private server hosted on Softlayer, but it'd be totally isolated from the actual servers that we all play on, and would never even have 0.1% of the load of a datacenter like the major ones in Europe and America. (We know this is true, because GGG has repeatedly been 'unable to reproduce' performance issues that we're all facing, even on similar hardware). Now, enterprise scale performance testing is not easy to do, and there are some specific obstacles that GGG faces with their choice of datacenter management, as well as with how rapidly the game has grown in popularity (and complexity).

I have a theory that a big part of the packetloss/lagspikes that folks are seeing a lot more frequently with the Legion mechanic is caused by the MQ (message queue) process that PoE instances are using on Softlayer. There'd be very little way for GGG to analyse the performance of the MQ on a Softlayer server, and even less way for them to test for it internally. It's also entirely possible that the internal networks behind the softlayer edge are at least partly responsible for the packet loss which happens when an instance produces a large number of events.

Honestly, I think GGG is big enough now (especially with the Chinese funding) that they should be managing their own datacenters. At the very least, they should NOT be outsourcing it to a woefully ill-equipped vendor.

More than anything, I really just want GGG to take ownership of this issue, like they have done in the past with so many other issues that have faced the playerbase. That involves them not only stating that they are aware of the issue, and that they intend to make it better, but also hopefully includes a genuine remediation plan and some transparency into their long-term strategy to keep PoE playable as it gets more and more complex.

"[BUG - IMPORTANT] Korean whispers not being logged in Client.txt" part 2

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 08:24 AM PDT

This is a follow up of this post:

[BUG - IMPORTANT] Korean whispers not being logged in Client.txt since 3.7.3 - Trading tools not working

    Hey everyone,

Two days ago, Chris answered to the PM I sent about the issue.

I waited until now because I needed some more informations.

Unfortunately, this is not a bug. It's a legal requirement in Korea, done for privacy reasons.

To quote Chris, "Any message originating from a Kakao client isn't logged (regardless of whether it's a Korean or non-Korean user seeing the message)."

To clarify Yolandi_GGG's message about "being aware of the situation", it's simply that they weren't aware of the legal requirements surrounding the issue, and so assumed it was a bug.

Chris stated that there is no work-around in progress, but "We are examining the laws in more detail to make sure we are understanding them fully."

It's amazing how GGG made the game available in new languages, expanding the community.

Sadly, nothing can be done about this situation. Chris stated not being happy either, but they have no other choice than complying with local laws.

Chris also stated that "Maybe we can find another solution that doesn't involve logging messages". I know they are good-willed, but personally, looking at the whole situation, I don't think they can do any more than that.

What can we do against this?

    Not much, really.

If the issue really is only about Kakao accounts, then I guess that new-coming players could just make a normal account on GGG website and whispers will work just fine. But then they wouldn't be able to fully use the official Korean website, as they won't be able to log into it, which would be a huge problem for those who don't understand English.

    In summary...

Any whisper received from a Kakao account will not be logged.

Which means that any whisper not being logged, no matter if the name is English/Korean/Russian, is from an user with a Kakao account.

Any whisper that does get logged, no matter if that person really is a Korean or not, means that they are using a regular account.

All in all, huge thanks to Chris for clarifying the situation.

It was a short exchange, but I could feel how truly wonderful he is. Thank you.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 12:33 AM PDT

I love my Cyclone Slayer. He is the funnest character I have made in years. However, every other league I re-roll a fistful of characters and get them to 85 - 90, but this time, every single alt I make feels garbo compared to cyclone and I stopped at ~75.

Well, at-least I enjoy leveling itself.

Game stability and performance needs some love

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 03:47 AM PDT

I'm not one to usually write these kind of posts, but, I've never had any kind of "real" problems with Path of Exile until this league, the league launch went fairly smooth, and I love the league, except for things that now happens in the client. Here are a couple of scenarios that has happened to me personally on a Asus GeForce GTX 1080 Ti with the rest being good components as well:

    • The league for me started with the water shader killing my fps in each water zone. Put water on low, works some times and sometimes not, this is still not completely fixed for me.
    • Non network latency related lag, while using cyclone. Spin to win, and then suddenly you freeze and are on the other side of the map, this with the network boxes showing everything as normal.
    • Textures going missing or blank(grey)
    • Random Error messages, ex: "Pointer missing or invalid" -> Game shutdown
    • The famous "trading party bug"
    • Using movement skill while highlighting an item (This still happens to me even though there was patch notes of this being fixed) glitches the movement skill to jump an extra step in a weird way

I do understand constantly changing the game and adding new features is something we want, but this process needs to be better quality assured, this league has left a bitter taste and trust in the stability of the game, that I personally do not like tasting.

All in all, looking fowards, I hope we get a more stable client.
