From 20 chaos to 200 exalts : First time Korean player's reflection & all the methods I used to make currency this league.

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 07:12 AM PDT

    Hello, PoE community,

I'm a young player from Korea who is about a month and a half into this league. Started playing in the last week of June in light of Kakao launching a Korean server. First of all, I can't help but praise what an incredible game PoE is. I've been looking for a game like this since Diablo 2, and it seems to hit all the right notes. The complexity, especially, is rather intimidating from a new user's POV and provides one of the steepest learning curves I've ever encountered in a game, but it seems to be a big contributor in making PoE that much more enjoyable and virtually endlessly playable.

The first impressive thing about this game is how well all the contents from the previous leagues work with one another. While you're mapping, for example, you encounter Niko, who enables you to Delve, and delving gives you maps, which allows you to go back to mapping once sulphite runs out ... etc, thus creating a positive feedback loop that locks all the content into a weave that supports one another, making all of them extremely worthwhile to pursue. There is no placeholder content in the game that no one actually plays. Delve, Breaches, Abyss, Atlas, Legion, Syndicate all play a role within the PoE economy and adds something to it.

The second thing I noticed was how well paced currency/item drops are. Acquiring high-end gears in PoE seems more time-consuming and difficult when compared to other games. However, I've felt that the constant flow of smaller currencies is just enough to keep you afloat and to upgrade your gears, while not being enough to allow too large of a leap ahead. And the occasional exalts or valuable item drops are incredibly well-timed for that much needed dopamine release, and makes you dig deeper and deeper into the game in anticipation of the next big drop. It seems that GGG has gotten this item-drop-pacing thing down to near-perfection. Props to them for that.

Speaking of currencies, I have been pre-occupied with acquiring them ever since I set foot into the world of PoE. Who doesn't want to be rich enough to buy a HH and any endgame gear you want? Grinding glacier or burial chambers for random results didn't really appeal to me. So, mapping and RMT aside, I wanted to figure out a way to make enough currency in-game to do just that, and I'd like to share with you all the different methods I've tried this league for currency acquisition.

In a nutshell, I started with 20 chaos that I've gathered while clearing acts 1~10, and managed to work it up to 200+ exalts. As a disclaimer, there will be absolutely no new information here for you if you are even moderately familiar with the game. All this is mainly for beginners, who are clueless when it comes to making money. There are definitely many more ways to make currency, and some of you already know methods that are much more profitable than anything listed below. All I want to do here is simply to share the methods I've personally used to make enough currency for a comfortable in-game progression, and I hope it can do the same for you.

    - For the poverty-stricken (20chaos ~ 10exalts)

    1.Flipping Divination Cards

    Profitability : ★☆☆☆☆

    Time Investment : ★★★★★

    Gambling-factor: ☆☆☆☆☆

This exploits the fact that a complete set of divination cards is always cheaper than the item that you get for trading in the cards. For example, "The King's Heart" goes for 7c a pop right now, or 56c for a stack of 8. Kaom's Heart is worth approx. 70c. That means you can turn a profit of 14c each time you buy a full stack of The King's Heart and sell the finished product, Kaom's Heart. There are div cards at all price points, therefore even the poorest can do it, and there is zero gambling involved so you can turn consistent results. A few things to look out for:

    1. This is an extremely time consuming endeavor. You might be better off farming glacier. Use it only as a way of getting yourself out of crushing poverty.
    2. Shoot for cards that give you an unique item - Uniques with higher stats will turn a bigger profit.
    3. Go for cards with low stacks - Three "Samurai's Eye"s are needed for a complete stack. 12 "The Queen"s are needed for a complete stack. Shoot for the lower ones and save time.

    2.Flipping Currency

    Profitability : ★☆☆☆☆

    Time Investment : ★☆☆☆☆

    Gambling-factor: ☆☆☆☆☆

You can do this no matter how rich or poor you are. I'd recommend having at least 100c to start this off. Profit margins are slim, but it will be more lucrative the more currency you have. Let's say we're flipping chromatic orb (not taking into consideration the current exchange rate):

    1. List a single chaos in premium tab, set the price as 700/100 [Chromatic Orb], and purchase (Buy Order)
    2. List a single chromatic orb in premium tab, set the price as 100/600 [Chaos Orb], and sell (Sell Order)
    3. Profit of 100 Chromatic Orbs per trade

3.Flipping Currency - Exploiting Vendor Recipe

    Profitability : ★★☆☆☆

    Time Investment : ★☆☆☆☆

    Gambling-factor: ☆☆☆☆☆

Nessa in Act 1 sells an Orb of Alteration for 4 Orbs of Augmentation. Alt orbs go for 4:1 on the market, which means aug orbs should go for 16:1. However, if you check currency market on the trade website, you need at least 25 augs to buy a chaos. We can exploit this gap to make money:

    1. List a single chaos in premium tab, set the price as 25/1 [Orb of Augmentation], and purchase (Buy Order)
    2. Take all the purchased aug orbs and buy alt orbs from Nessa
    3. List a single alt orb in premium tab, set the price as 1/4 [Chaos Orb], and sell (Sell Order)
    4. Profit of ~9 augs, or 2 alts, or 0.5 chaos per trade

But of course, no one wants to go through all this trouble for 0.5c profit. So buy and sell in bulk! I usually set the buy order at 1250/50 or 3500/100, and the sell order at 100/400, or 100/410~420 for a faster sell. Alt orbs are high in demand so it will sell in no time. This is a pretty solid way of making dozens of chaos orbs with seconds of investment.

    - For the middle class (10~30 exalts)

    1. Aspect of the Cat Crafting

    Profitability : ★★★☆☆

    Time Investment : ★★☆☆☆

    Gambling-factor: ★☆☆☆☆

Simply buy a base item from the market, craft Aspect of the Cat using "Farrul, First of the Plains", and resell. Approx. 2 min time investment per item. I usually crafted & resold rings, with the following method. Prices will vary from day to day:

    1. Item search filter setting: Ring, Curse Enemies with Level # Assassin's Mark on Hit, # Empty Modifiers Min 5
    2. Purchase level 8 Assassin's Mark for 1exalt, level 12 for 2 exalts.
    3. Purchase Farrul, First of the Plains for ~60 chaos, go to bestiary and craft Aspect of the Cat on the ring
    4. Resell for 3~4 exalts, depending on the Assassin's Mark's level.

Recommended base types are Two-Stone, Diamond, and Unset Rings. Craft a few and have them ready to sell. If you want to turn a bigger profit, look for rings with "high +life & +res, other good mods, +1 Empty Prefix", craft and sell. I've sold a ring this way for 8 exalts, and base item was only 1 exa. Crafting Aspect of the Cat also works well with helmets. Snipe any good item with an empty suffix, craft and sell!

    2. Enchanted Helmets + Deafening Essence of Greed

    Profitability : ★★☆☆☆

    Time Investment : ★★★☆☆

    Gambling-factor: ★★★☆☆

Deafening Essence of Greed guarantees +100 max life, which is quite powerful. Essences crafting is much cheaper than fossil crafting, so it will be less of a financial burden crafting this way. However, you will never get the desired mods such as "+9 increased phy dmg" with this method, so these won't sell at too high of price no matter how good the rolls are.

In general, shoot for an at least tier 2 resistance when crafting these, along with an empty prefix+suffix so that you can craft +1 Range and Aspect of the Cat.

Choosing the right base type for the helmet is quintessential. If you are crafting a Cyclone enchant helmet, purchase the base using the following search filters:

    1. 40% Increased Cyclone Damage / Any Non-Unique / Strength Min 1 / Corrupted No / Mirrored No / Max Price 6~7 Exalts / Enable Live Search
    2. 15% Increased Cyclone Attack Speed / Any Non-Unique / Strength Min 1 / Corrupted No / Mirrored No / Max Price 8~9 Exalts / Enable Live Search

Do not use any base that requires 70+ int. It will take you a long ass time to sell it. Sometimes you'll find good base types that get listed for under 3 exalts. Snipe them and sell them as is with 3~4 exalts profit. Easy money.

    - For the well-off (30+ exalts)

If you are at this level of wealth, you probably are doing quite well for yourself and already know what to do to make money. So feel free to skip this part.

    1.Enchanted Cyclone Helmets + Pristine/Jagged Fossil Crafting

    Profitability : ★★★★★ (Records of 50 exalts/day)

    Time Investment : ★★★★☆

    Gambling-factor: ★★★★★

    Stressfulness: ★★★★★★★★★★★

You can give this a stab with even 10 exalts, at your own peril. The reason I recommend a 30+ exalts starting investment is that due to the extremely RNG nature of fossil crafting, it is quite easy to burn through all your currency without getting any decent results. With 30 exalts, you will want to invest 10 exalts in fossils and resonators, 15 exalts in at least three good helmet bases using the search filters mentioned above, and 5 exalts as the emergency backup fund in case RNG fucks you up where the sun don't shine.

Buy fossils and resonators in bulk of 100 to save time. On the first helmet, craft until you have something that is "meh, but OK". Then move onto the second helmet. If you hit another "OK", move onto the third helmet and hit another OK. Only then are you allowed to go back to the first one and shoot for something a step above ok. Something good, or even amazing.

Because RNG is such a strong factor, crafting and selling something that is OK to keep you afloat is hugely important. The real profits come when you hit something big every once in a while. Don't be too strict, sell what you can, or you'll burn through all your currency in minutes.

Problem with fossil crafting is that a large sum of your net worth is tied to your fossils and helmets. So you'll want to sell cheaply and quickly. Liquidate your crafted helmets as quickly as possible in order to reinvest the currency into the next batch of crafting materials. You'll have no currency on hand and will be poor the entire time you do this.

If you hit something like this, stop and sell. This is the baseline requirement for a fossil crafted Cyclone helmet to be sellable:

    1. +9% phys dmg
    2. 90+ max life
    3. Empty prefix - Craft +1 Range

The perfect craft will look like this, which you'll rarely ever see.

    1. +9% phys dmg
    2. 110+ max life
    3. +2~3% max life
    4. >40 int or tier 1 res
    5. Empty prefix - Craft +1 Range
    6. Empty suffix - Craft Aspect of the Cat

I've hit something like this once which sold for 38ex, costed me about 10ex. But always keep in mind that good crafts are the outliers, the oddity, the exceptions, never the norm. Expect shit results, always, and you'll save yourself from woe.

    2.Astral Plate + Serrated/Pristine Fossil Crafting

Just... stay away from this if you value your exalts.

    Hope this helps!

Some Feature Requests From a Player with a Physical Disability

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 06:53 PM PDT

EDIT: Thanks for all the suggestion and comments. One thing I would like to clarify as it seems that a lot of people are suggesting them: I know scripts can be a solution to some of the things I brought up. The point of the post is to discuss improvements to the game specifically and not third party solutions. I just wanted to bring up some things that could improve QOL specifically for mouse-only players like myself.

TLDR: Due to my physical disability, I play the game with assistive technology that is equivalent to mouse only (left/right click). It would be cool if the game had features such as:

    1. click on hotbar skill icon to use skills. (Auras, Vaal skills, Flares, Dynamite, etc.)
    2. UI improvements. Betrayal Board can't be closed with the mouse, Atlas does not have a zoom scrollbar like the skill tree, etc.
    3. Double click would be a neat possible hotkey
    4. Clicking on flasks suck. Totally understandable if improvements/QOL can't really be made due to concerns of balance etc., just kind of wanted people to imagine having to click all 5 flasks every 4 seconds

Please consider ensuring that UI is as accessible and user-friendly as possible. Thanks

    ----------------------------------------------------

For some context, I've been playing POE for quite some time now (started during Warband league, but it wasn't until Harbinger that I started playing avidly). I'm a quadriplegic, meaning I have very little use of my arms and rely on assistive technology to operate a computer/play games. One thing that makes POE an ideal game for me personally is that it can pretty much be played entirely with just mouse input (left/right click), which the assistive technology that I use emulates. The problem, however, is that it is somewhat limiting in several aspects of the game. I've compiled a list of features that I think might help increase quality of life not just for me, but for all players.

    1. The ability to click on icons to active skills, auras, etc. One thing that has always been a hassle for me is that in order to activate auras and Vaal skills, I would have to change the mouse hotkey to each aura one at a time and activate them. Being able to right click icons to activate in the hotbar would save a lot of time and hassle. I haven't really used Vaal skills or supplementary skills like Ancestral Warchief ever for this reason. This would also be helpful for Delving, where clicking on a flare/dynamite would drop it on the ground. I know that this was removed during Delve league due to people misclicking it, but having the ability to toggle it on, maybe as an option, would be great.
    2. The ability to operate different screens with just the mouse. It would be nice if every screen had the ability to be manipulated, zoomed in and out of, etc. with just the mouse. The passive tree is a great example of this, as it has a slider for zoom and an x button to close it. The two screens that I can think of off the top of my head that don't do this are the Atlas and the Betrayal board. The Atlas can't be zoomed into with just a mouse and the Betrayal board does not have an x to close it. Very small and minor nitpicks that are probably not worth addressing, but would be a nice QOL improvement nonetheless.
    3. More hotkey options. This kind of ties into #1. In particular, having the ability to assign double left click/right click to skills would be nice. I usually play bow builds, as they have fast movement speed and primarily use one skill for both bossing/clearing(left click for walking, right click for damage skill). I don't really play melee/caster builds because they are heavily reliant on movement skills like leap slam and flame dash for mobility. Having double click as a hotkey option would give mouse only players more access to other skills.
    4. Easier Flask usage. Flasks are probably the one game mechanic that is the hardest to take full advantage of using just a mouse. Most of the characters I roll usually either don't use flasks at all or just make use of 1 or 2 at most as clicking each flask every 4-6 seconds is just too much of a pain. I am fully aware that flasks are deliberately designed to be manually managed (no popsicle stick, etc.), so I understand if they can't really have an automated option like a timer that would activate them every x seconds, or a clickable icon that would activate them all at once. A possible alternative that I think wouldn't be too broken would be the ability to click and drag the mouse across the flask bar to activate them all. This would make flasks a little easier to use for mouse-only players and wouldn't be broken for most players.

I understand that some of these suggestions are probably more difficult to implement than they seem and might not be very realistic. I just hope that if anything, this post encourages the development team to keep accessibility in mind when designing features to improve the game and brings awareness to a small minority that enjoys the game that some people might not have been aware of. Thanks for reading.

    3.7 Off-Meta builds

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 10:39 AM PDT

I actually did 4 builds this league, and taking a long break from Poe until probably 4.0 expansion

As with every league, I give a breakdown of how they work, and a rating out of 10 based on how viable I think they are. I have short videos & PoBs of most builds on request.

Dex-Stack Support Champion: This one was actually the biggest flop of all of my builds, but for a few strange reasons. Issue 1, I assumed Synthesis uniques would be available this league and was hoping to use Mask of the Tribunal (I had already had the character premade and just swapped in Deidbellow as the helmet) Issue #2, my 6L Dread Banner is kind of redundant because most physical-based builds get 100% impale or near 100% impale, making my amazing 45+ impale useless.

I kept about 60k evasion, 6k life and taunted, as well as stacking every buff I could think of that a normal aurabot didn't use. The main goal was to buff phys big-time, since I knew most people would be playing melee for Legion, and not overlap with my friend's aurabot. Overall the buffs granted were good, but the support just wasn't tanky enough to justify the taunt spam.

I give this build a flaming dogshit 2/10, kinda bummed Synth uniques were unavailable because that would've made this build a lot better.

    Dance with Death Assassin:

This build used Dance with Death's notable "damage with critical hits is lucky" to make the most out of a single huge hit (Discharge) to 1HKO bosses, and abused all of the remaining crit to function as a semi-autobomber.

The build could kill white mobs with just Heralds, but as I got into higher red maps, I started to need to cast skills to deal with blue packs, the heralds couldn't do it alone.

Defense-wise, it was a bit weaker as well, due to not having a helmet, and being forced to deal with "enemy crit damage against you is lucky", I ran a Brass Dome for this which also gives no life. The best strategy with this build was just to 'kill them before they kill me' which is never how I want my builds to work. Realistically the damage benefit from Dance with Death is roughly 30-50% more damage, and the downsides are too heavy even in a build strictly designed around it.

Overall due to low defenses and gradually declining clear speed as we get into red maps, I will have to give this build a 6/10. The boss one-shotting is fun though.

I Don't Know How I Came Up with this Build Guardian:

This one is just strange but meshes together very well somehow. The goal is to function as a pure autobomber with Herald of Thunder & Stormfire, igniting enemies and proliferating the ignite to clear packs. Vinktar's is used every now and then to reapply shocks, to continue the Herald chain.

We scale our lightning & fire damage through an Elegant Hubris jewel with 320% minion damage (and Spiritual Aid), which also scales our minions.

When we get kills or hit rares/bosses, we summon purity sentinels which hit like trucks due to all of the minion damage we have, and take down tougher enemies that our Herald can't clear.

For defenses, it has EB and MoM for better eHP, Guardian's Time of Need combined with Devouring Diadem makes it so if we aren't 1 shot, we will heal really quickly (this works surprisingly well)

I give this weird fucker a 9/10, there is room to improve the build but it has trouble with tougher bosses like Shaper/Guardians (if Sentinels drop or die)

    Bleed Explosion Gladiator:

Not sure if this one is considered off-meta, but it's definitely really strong. It uses Carcass Jack & scales AoE to make our bleed explosions big, then for single target uses Vaal Double Strike to melt bosses instantly.

For defenses, it uses Outmatch & Outlast with phys damage reduction on the tree & in gear, along with Divine Flesh for ele mitigation. Flesh & Stone and endurance charges.

It has insane clear speed even up to T16s and over 1m single target, so it destroys bosses. The only thing I can say about this build is that GGG may have gone overboard with melee buffs? This build is easily 10/10.

Let me know if you guys have your own off-meta builds that worked well!

Builds that are easy on the hands?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 09:38 AM PDT

This might seem like a strange question to some but as an aging gamer my hands can really hurt from games with too much clicking and button mashing and thus I tend to gravitate towards builds where I can grind with relatively little button mashing.

I used a frostbolt totem templar build for this league with relatively good results. I get many spell casts out of one totem which tends to cut down on button pressing and thus cuts down on hand pain but I'm wondering if there are any other builds that are effective yet relatively low on button mashing. It would be nice to play something else but I don't want to build a character up and then have to stop playing it because it hurts my hands. Thoughts?

How to bypass scarab trade listing or other "non-tender" trade listing.

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 10:11 PM PDT

You are in trade league, and decided to buy something, you look it up on /trade to find that most of the listing are in scarabs, and you wanted to trade in chaos orbs? This is how to go about it.

In this search I look up Maze of the Minotaur t16 map https://www.pathofexile.com/trade/search/Legion/jWLO4WuX only to find that top listings are in scarabs https://i.imgur.com/MeBL7AQ.jpg

To ensure that the listing are in chaos orbs, and not chaos orb equivalent.

Enable trade filters, and go to buyout price, swap from chaos orb equivalent to chaos orb or any of the other currency available https://i.imgur.com/XGM1zJV.png ,optionally you can set a minimum price, to avoid the "0 chaos" buyouts.

Now enjoy your scarab free trades.

    https://www.pathofexile.com/trade/search/Legion/lgX9vjUV

    https://i.imgur.com/ryCEtDE.png

You can set up your "defaults", like select buyout only chaos, then save the link https://www.pathofexile.com/trade/search/Legion/zbpyoqc4 by using this link, the buyout is now set to "default chaos orb buyout" and you can add in your other mod searches.

You can do this with any search and save the result as a "default" link in your bookmarks.

    Angry (...kinda) Shield Charge Post!

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 09:48 AM PDT

    Two things:

    • Why is the mouse position for maximum Shield Charge distance almost at the border of the screen?

First off it feels so bad to have to position your pointer ten miles ahead...

And even more for people with multiple monitors. In a game like PoE where you constantly go back and forth between web pages and the game itself it's extremely convenient to have more than one monitor and to play in windowed mode, having to click so far to the edge of the screen can result in you focusing your browser tab with the mouse when you move it a bit too far

    • Why on Earth do we have Shield Damage scaling now?

I 100% agree that it makes sense in almost every way thinkable BUT look at that area, why would i ever use it to deal damage? Everyone using Shield Charge as a Movement Skill (Should be just about 99.99% of the players using it) will at least link it to Faster Attacks and Fortify Support if possible.

This comes with some pretty forseeable implications:

    1. You are (as a caster, the only people with very few exceptions using shield charge) scaling the new base damage with a 3-Link (Fortify's damage multplier says "HI")
    2. People even more serious about their clearspeed will be using a 4,5-Link pair of Insanity Gloves, that's SC - Faster Attacks - Fortify - 20+% Quality Culling Strike just as they did before
    3. You should be using a decent Shield, increasing the base damage of Shield Charge even further

So now you will say all of that sounds fine and dandy and you would be right...

But now you have to worry about Physical Reflect on pure Elemental casters!

With every bit of Shield Defenses it gets worse and worse. I can't recommend any sources of generic crit and crit multi since it gains 1% Basecrit per 100 ES on Shields unless you want to insta poof yourself on the first pack. And oh lord dont you dare run a phys reflect map with a Hybrid ARM/ES or EV/ES shield.

TL:DR: New Shield Charge has now even more flaws compared to it's predecessor (you should all be familiar with tiny stones) if used as a Movement Skill and the changes to the "attack in place" functionality make it more clunky to use.

    Angry Reddit thread over.

    Gambler cards vs Stacked decks

Are there different possible outcomes from a stacked deck vs a set of 5 gambler cards? The price difference is amazing... 70 chances at stacked decks cost 4 ex where you could buy 70 sets of gambler card for under 1 ex. I don't understand the reasoning for the cost difference. Is it just because of the how much easier it is to buy stacked decks than sets of the gambler cards?

Arc / Minion Witch Build Improvement Suggestions?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 07:39 AM PDT

Hey so my friend recently got back into PoE a bit and is struggling with his build. He's not doing anything I'm personally familiar with, so I don't know how to help him exactly, so any help would be great. In general he's heavily focused on minions and his main attack is Arc. Specifically, he's constantly getting 1 hit killed by Incursion characters and its driving him insane.

A good list of uniques / rares would be super helpful, as well as a Path of Building skill tree link.
