PSA: Blighted maps eat your sextants

    Posted: 24 Dec 2019 09:27 AM PST

When you open a blighted map, the charges on the sextants in the area of its parent map will be consumed, but there will be no effect on the map itself. It's similar to unique maps which consume charges even on sextants that don't affect them.

The Sirius fight is the worst encounter PoE has seen in a long time.

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 04:43 PM PST

Almost exactly one year ago, a few days after the launch of Betrayl League, i made this post about Caterina stating that it was the worst fight poe has seen in a long time.

This hit #1 on the sub for a few days and people seemed to generally agree with it. GGG did too, it seems. Im not saying this post had anything to do with it, but its worth pointing out that a lot of the problems with the fight i listed in this post have since been fixed with Caterina. Not all of them, but its now acceptable garbage, and fortunately its garbage i dont have to interact with anyway since its not worth doing for any reason really. Credit where credit is due - i will always praise GGG for listening. Hence making these posts, in the hopes that they will listen again.

However, one year later, we are right back to where we started. And somehow, with Sirius, its worse. Not only have GGG made the same mistakes as before, but they've made them in an even more egregious way, in a manner that makes it seem like they've learnt absolutely nothing.

In that post, i highlighted the three major problems: Immunity and phases which require illogical player input to progress, unintuitive and unexplained mechanics, awful player communication of what is even going on and total lack of any visual clarity whatsoever. These are all once again back in full force for the new Sirius fight, and this time it feels far more awful as this is supposed to be the big culmination of all the Atlas progression. The final boss to this big expansion thats to last us till 4.0 and beyond. The replacement for probably one of the best designed fights in Poe. In addition, the fight is actually quite hard outside its bullshit, unlike Cat who remains a pushover.

We've all seen the $8k Waggle clip. You might have watched others attempt the fight in SC on youtube. I have yet to see actually anybody go in - blind or well studied\, sc or hcssf - and not say all of the following: "Where even is he?", "Are you done yet?", "Well that was stupid", and "I dont even know what hit me".

Getting lost in the arena, or "checkmate" trapped by terrain, should not be an aspect of design players have to think about. Players should not be coming out of the fight more confused than when they went in. Players should not have to fight the terrain of the arena, more than they fight the actual enemy in that arena.

Just like in Caterina, players should not have to walk around the arena, with no clue what is going on, wondering if the game is bugged because the boss just teleported away - but is still dpsing while in full immunity - while there is no indication of how to progress the fight.

If we are going to have to manage arena terrain (which, we shouldnt. But if we HAVE to...) - then at least make it obvious which bits of the terrain are the ones we can interact with. You had to recant this with the Caterina fight after it was complained about, why do we have to go through this process again? We've already had one clarity patch since release, and im guessing we are going to have to go through several more before this fight is in an acceptable state - which is should have been on launch.

Getting back into the bossfight after a log or a rip is potentially the single hardest aspect of this entire fight. And that on every level is just stupid. Either make him a pseudo Hardcore fight like Delve, or dont have the clouds of bullshit and arena terrain make it so it can be literally impossible to come back from a failure. We shouldnt have to micromanage the terrain both in relation to our character AND in relation to the entrance to the arena.

Instadeath or massive damage mechanics like the red clouds of death, should at least have proper hitboxes. You should not be getting damaged when you are more than a character's distance away from the visual indication of its area.

Ground targeted effects, due to the nature of them being on the ground and therefore hidden below layers upon layers of clutter both from the boss and the player, should be really fucking obvious if they are going to do large amounts of damage. You did this right in Shaper/UE, why have we suddenly reversed?

Thematic and epic looking art design should be secondary to gameplay. There is nothing more frustrating in games, then dying to a mechanic you could never reacted to even if you knew it was going to happen. This is even more frustrating, when the reason why was not a lack of knowledge or lack of preparation - but the art design obfuscating and confusing gameplay to the point where it is near impossible to actually see important mechanics. It shouldnt be too much to task, that against THE big set-piece fuck off bossfight of the game we at least know what is causing us to die.

Similarly, the thematic aspect of having the fight be in Oriath should not take precedence over the gameplay being fucked up because of the silly terrain its on. Especially that fucking staircase. Just... why would that have to be in the fight? Did nobody have the foresight to see that this was an aweful idea?

If we are going to have player/boss interaction that is non-intuitive, like standing in a certain portion of the arena that any player otherwise would never want to stand in in order to get bosses out of their immunity phases, give us ANY indication that this is what needs to happen. Again, you learnt this with Caterina. You had to add a bunch of visual shit over the course of multiple leagues to make it clear. Why is it not present here? Once again, a simple voiceline from Zana (instead of the boss waxing poetic about the nature of man), an indicator in the arena, ANYTHING to tell the player - "hey that thing you would never do? Do that this once". You did with with Uber Elder ("to me exile!"), why is this not part of the game anywhere else?

    TL:DR

Straight up - this fight is unfair, its both literally broken in that its buggy as shit, and fundamentally broken as in its designed inherently awfully in many aspects, its a gigantic letdown and most of all it simply is not fun. We want challenging bossfights, we dont want bullshit ones.

Im usually a pretty tolerant player when it comes to forgiving problems with the game. But this is the only time ive straight up just quit, turned my PC off and left my room because of a video game. Without a doubt the worst experience ive ever had in poe. Period. Overall im loving the league, I love new atlas, I want the game to improve and am trying to give feedback as constructively as i can despite the frustration.

But please, for the love of god GGG, please fix.

(Edit - piggybacking off visibility this got to make people aware of this excellent video from MBX explaining all the mechanics of the fight, including the "Hide in a tent" cheese strat. Which is something id never thought id had to do, in an arpg bossfight but there you go.)
