Realistically addressing Chaos Orbs as a "powerful, risky and exciting way" to improve gear

Realistically addressing Chaos Orbs as a "powerful, risky and exciting way" to improve gear

So there's a highly upvoted post on here about requiring ~6 trillion chaos orbs to craft a specific 6 T1 weapon. There are many comments pointing out that nobody in their right mind would expect to hit that with chaos orbs. Correct, the post was making a humorous point using GGG's recent statement:

Using currency items like Exalted Orbs or Chaos Orbs on your gear is a powerful, risky and exciting way to improve it.

However, I want to humor those comments and GGG's statement and create a more realistic example. Instead of considering a 6 T1 item, let's consider a bare-bones 3 T3 Body Armor (Str). Let's say I want to chaos spam T3+ Maximum Life, T3+ Lightning Resistance, and T3+ Cold or Fire Resistance (because GGG is indicating that this is an exciting and viable way to get relatively acceptable gear, per their above quote). If I chaos spam an i84 base for at least those 3 affixes, I'm looking at ~363 chaos orbs--for an item that would almost assuredly not be an upgrade for anyone that already had 363 chaos orbs on hand.

I can buy the same item off another player for 1 chaos and guarantee that it has the correct two resistances that I need.

But let's say I'm really cookin' now and want to upgrade my chest to have T3+ Maximum Life and all three Elemental Resistances at T3+. I know, I know, I'm an ambitious end game player with that kind of an item, but I've got plenty of chaos to spare since my previous item got me so far, so let's get to it. Results are... not bad! Only ~10,239 chaos to get my ultra end-game item via GGG's "reasonable" chaos spam crafting system.

I can buy the same item off another player for 5-10 chaos. But chaos spam was just too fun!

So essentially, the majority of GGG's player base is never going to engage with this "fun and exciting" crafting system that GGG is so passionate about. They will simply run maps for chaos and sporadic items/currencies that constitute bulk chaos drops and buy their items from other players. It's completely unreasonable to expect any but the highest caliber of players to actually use their currency on items (excluding low-tier currencies like alts, regals, etc). The crafting system that GGG is so passionate about essentially doesn't exist for 99% of the player base.

That's why people are so passionate about keeping Harvest crafting around--it let them actually craft their own items for the first time. Crafting items is a very exciting part of this game and being able to engage that system increases player retention. So maybe they can't keep Harvest crafting as it is (even if most of the player base thinks it vastly improves their game) but they sure as hell can't go back to what it was without giving us something. They need to come up with a way for the average player to feel enabled to actually craft fairly powerful items on their own.

    The Harvest Debate [with SFX]

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 04:48 AM PST

Recognizing that you could make a well usable or even great item from the one you just found was one of the best feelings in PoE.

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 03:55 AM PST

Like so many others, despite having a few thousand hours clocked in, I never really engaged with crafting before Harvest dropped. But since Harvest league I really enjoyed finding items either as a drop or in trade that I knew could be super useful or valuable with just a few lucky harvest crafts.

Since I didn't use TFT, this always gave me something to work towards. Because some harvest crafts aren't exactly readily available when you don't trade for them, you know. You still have to farm A LOT and may still never see some of the rarer crafts. And you still have to do your homework on craftofexile.com etc.

I would often times buy an "Ok" item for say 5 Ex in trade and knew with a bit of work I could really make something cool out of it. Then finally getting the item to where I wanted it to be after farming for days towards this goal... THIS was a real source of excitement and gave me a sense of accomplishment in PoE.

Harvest even encouraged me to complementary slam crafting currencies like Exalts (esp. Atlas Exalts) Warlord's Ex etc. Because combing them with Harvest crafts made it actually viable for me.

I am on the other hand NEVER going to buy a 5 Ex item and YOLO Annul/Ex on it. So crafting has died for me. And it was fun while it lasted.

    Think I'm taking a break until PoE2.

Edit: really enjoying the discussion here. Valid arguments from either side and everyone is being quite civil. PoE community proves to be somewhat decent folks. Some good suggestions in here. Cheers.

Serious Question from a noob: What did y'all do before Harvest?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 11:02 AM PST

I started playing last year, so I don't know much about the history of the "meta". A lot of people are very upset with the changes to Harvest, but isn't it a really new addition to the game? What did people do to craft before Harvest's deterministic crafting? Was it a long-standing problem that Harvest addressed and is now being taken away? I don't understand the outrage.

GGG please reduce amount of item drops.

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 08:32 PM PST

GGG please get rid of 90% or more of items that drop and make the remaining item drops use the improved item mechanics you have used for ritual so we get items that may possibly be worth using rather than just selling for alteration shards.

Right now we get far too many items (so much so pressing alt can cause your game to crash) and 99.9% of them are totally useless and everyone filters them out. Why bother to drop so many items if all they do is cause lag on your servers and are never even seen by players due to item filters.

Do us and yourselves a favour and get rid of most of the items that drop and make those that drop actually worth IDing.

    I love crafting this way

I get bored of not being able to DO THINGS long before I run out of things to do...

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 01:04 PM PST

Not my quote, but it stood out to me as I've been perusing the various threads and discussions that have been happening this week.

I consider myself a pretty casual player and I often play a league start to finish but at a very modest pace. I sometimes get frustrated with not being able to do things (as the OP put it) along the way, which usually means I put the game aside for a few days or a week, and then come back and pick up where I left off.

Curious if this resonates with anyone else.

    Can we get Shaper/Elder Exalts?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 03:33 AM PST

With the harvest changes, you can still craft a good base (4-5 T1/Essence/Temple/Delve mods), slam a Conqueror's exalt, and tweak with Maven's orbs and Aug influence until happy.

But shaper and elder items are needlessly more difficult, you need to start with the base and forgo augments altogether or add random influence and brick 5/6 crafting attempts.

Plus it would add value to running shaper again.

Most PoE Content Creators are out of touch About Harvest

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 12:57 PM PST

They say how they approve of this change because it is good for them and only them nothing about this change makes it better for people that play an hour or 2 every day I was finally able to craft semi decent gear without spending an absurd amount of money on small incremental upgrades. Now before harvest came back I was getting into Meta Crafting but that is in no way accessible to casual players that struggle to get an exalt let alone multiple to craft items. This is Purely a Buff to the .1% and I was on my way to being with them before I realized after this change how Disconnected GGG is from the casual player and I cannot in good conscious Support this

Empyrean Keep - a dodgy explode+crit chest (contains instructions to craft in next league, too!)

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 09:44 AM PST

I wish people would try to keep themselves grounded a bit more in times like these. People are upvoting literally anything that supports the narrative even if it has misinformation

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 11:05 PM PST

For example you see lots of upvoted posts/comments saying Harvest is dead now/may as well remove it from the game, or that GGG is killing deterministic crafting.

Harvest will still be extremely powerful next patch. Do people not know you can still 100% guarantee craft Explody chest using Harvest next league? or +2 to all skill gems amulets? Or +1 additional curse chest? Or %ES on block shields, these are just a couple examples. Yes these are all influenced items, but you can still use Harvest crafts to 100% guarantee them, you never needed Augment to do it, that was just the most common way.

But even if you didn't know about this method, there's still a ton of extremely powerful Harvest crafts that are unchanged. Making insane weapons is still the same for a ton of builds, like 2H slam skills. Cus fracturing is still exactly the same, and fracturing is completely nuts, and not just for weapons. Fracturing Essence mods (like Horror/Delirium/etc, any Deafening mod that's good for your build), fracturing so many incursion mods, delve mods (like curse on hit rings, or fire leech on hit jewellery)

in fact some of these things are buffed (or might be, depends on atlas tree changes) considering we'll see them close to 60% more often in maps.

These are just a few, there's plenty of other really useful/powerful harvest crafts like adding influence to items, changing resists (don't forget this works on the Incursion mods too, so like +(46–48)% to Lightning Resistance, (40–60)% increased Critical Strike Chance against Shocked Enemies can change to +(46–48)% to Cold Resistance (30–50)% increased Damage with Hits against Chilled Enemies) same with the Leech+Resist mods too.

Also it's not just misinformation, some people are so upset over this they go too far, or stop making sense, like this post here. The reason why PoE doesn't have any real competitors is because it's so much better than any other ARPG out there, and it's because they don't listen to feedback like this, but instead follow their own philosophy/ideas whenever they have strong conviction.

Just.. please try to chill a bit, i know you guys are passionate about this topic but I think it's important to try to keep a level head.

Edit: Added in some demos of how to guarantee add explode chest mod with Harvest post-nerf, and +2 skill gem amulet. The +2 skill gem amulet is a much more complicated method, but that's always been the case, as you need to first Alt spam/possibly annul method to start with a +1 int gems base before Harv crafting the +1 chaos gems
