Video Guide to Scaling Damage in PoE

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 03:03 PM PDT

    Hey all!

I made a video right before the release of Legion talking about scaling damage in this game. I have updated and expanded on that original guide, and wanted to share it here. It was one of my more popular videos, and a lot of folks seemed to really enjoy it, but I felt like it needed an update. I tried to incorporate feedback from viewers and expand the discussion to talk about DoT and a couple of other things this time around, as well as implement some more applied examples.

My goals with this video is to give folks who are interested in making their own builds or tweaking build guides the basic tools to do so. As well, a lot of folks have trouble transitioning between different stages of character development when following guides. Hopefully, this will help you fill in those gaps yourself.

Warning, this is NOT a quick listen. The guide is over an hour long, but it really covers a lot of the basics of scaling and calculating damage in this game (as well as some more general concepts that should apply in any RPG). However, I don't think really short videos do this topic justice. I have, however, timestamped the various sections so it is easier to navigate if you want to jump to a particular section.

Here she is, and thanks in advance for any feedback/comments!

    How Do We Explode Now?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 03:51 PM PDT

With the changes to explode chest what reliable end-game options (not Quecholli) do we have in the game?

    • Inpulsa's Broken Heart
    • Obliteration Wand
    • Asenanth's Gentle Touch
    • Mon'tregul's Grasp
    • Sporeguard
    • Haemophilia Gloves
    • Herald of Ice
    • Infernal Blow
    • Gladiator/Occultist Ascendencies

Are any of these options superior to the others?

    Did I miss anything?

is spellslinging reap a dumb idea?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2021 02:32 AM PDT

i noticed while reading the corrupting fever gem info it says that triggering it would not bypass the life cost while reap does not have this.

so when you consider the somewhat long cast time of reap (.8 seconds) and potentially being able to avoid all the downsides of the blood charges while reaping (lol) the benefits, triggering starts to seem kinda sensible. plus i figured with 180% added effect spellslinger is not that bad either.

my current theory crafted character (havent finished tree) is a hybrid inquis with pious path, battlemage, and the crit stats node.

    is this a dumb idea?

Basically, can I prolif explosion with above mentioned combo?

Ignite Pennance Brand Vs Stormbrand Elementalist

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 08:04 PM PDT

I've never played a brand build and thought it might be a good option for 3.14. Just curious if anyone has played these builds to compare the strength weaknesses. My take is that they both stack golems for the phys resist and life regen. Stormbrand has higher immediate damage and pennance ramps up and builds for ignites? Would they both be decent surv and bossing. I was considering inq or hiero with archmage but I like more tanky characters and thought ele would have higher survivability.

I'm pretty casual and don't like to farm and dump a character to spend resources on a new one, so like a build that can do it all. Having to reroll ele reflect or something isnt a huge deal. I also really enjoy farming blighted maps if one is better for that.

    What Ascendancy for ice shot?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2021 01:47 AM PDT

Im thinking of going ice shot this league, played it a year ago or so, was really fun to play. I love the ice shatter explotions and with explodeys gone it seems like a good option.

Any changes or tipps for what Ascendancy I should pick?

I would love to be able to transition that bow character into a currency farmer later

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Chaos spellslinger questions (SCSSF)

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 06:08 PM PDT

    Hey friends!

I pretty much always play something melee oriented because I am a glutton for punishment... But have decided to try something else entirely.

I was wonder if Occultist or Trickster was better for a chaos spellslinger? Which is tankier? Which has better dps? Which is more ssf viable?

    Which guides would you recommend?

    Thank you in advance!!

Need advice for Champion vs Gladiator league starter

    Posted: 13 Apr 2021 03:04 AM PDT

I am new newer player looking for some advice between champ or glad (ritual was my first league)

I really want to league start with options to go tanky to survive the new league mechanic and still have dps for bossing/clearing

Gladiator seems to be pretty tanky with max block and have some options for good clear with Arena Challenger and Gratuitous Violence. On the other hand Champion also has perma fortify for tankiness, but has much better nodes for bossing.

Any builds, videos, suggestions would really help!

    brand playstyle

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 06:11 PM PDT

I'm planning on playing a storm brand starter next league bar some insane nerfs, but the previous times where I've played storm brand it felt really shit to play. Just wondering what I'm supposed to do when I'm a) mapping vs b) killing single target bosses. When do I cast new brands and when do I just spam brand recall? How do I maximize single target (mechanics wise)?

    Mahuxotl's Machination

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 08:45 PM PDT

    Salutations Exiles

With the new League comes an interesting Unique Shield, which I would just like to elaborate on and create a discussion.

Mahuxotl's Machination Chance to Block: 26% Armour: 148 Energy Shield: 29

Pretty typical. Now comes the interesting part. Corrupted Soul. Divine Flesh. Eternal Youth. Immortal Ambition. Vaal Pact. Also a Everlasting Sacrifice.

Corrupted Soul is a keystone passive skill which causes 50% Non-Chaos damage taken to bypass Energy shield and grants 20% of Maximum Life as Extra Maximum Energy Shield.

Divine Flesh is a keystone passive skill that converts 50% of elemental damage taken to chaos damage and grants additional maximum chaos resistance, but causes all damage to bypass energy shield.

Eternal Youth is a keystone passive skill which causes energy shield recharge to apply to life, but halves your life regeneration and life leech.

Immortal Ambition is a keystone passive skill which disables both energy shield recharge and regeneration and makes it degenerate by 5% each second, while causing life leech to recover energy shield when on full life.

Vaal Pact is a keystone passive skill that grants doubled life leech speed and maximum life leech rate, but causes life regeneration to have no effect.

Everlasting Sacrifice seems to be related to the Blood Magic content we have going, potentially allowing the use of Energy Shield as a resource for Blood based skills.

What this means is, we have Divine Flesh, meaning our Energy Shield is untouched as a health pool in terms of damage taken. Corrupted Soul essentially will boost that Energy Shield pool. Provided the Divine Flesh keystone is still in play, that means the 50% of Non-Chaos damage taken to bypass ES should already be happening. Eternal Youth essentially means your leech and life regen are reduced but Energy Shield recharge applying to Life can scale fast ES regen and high ES regen values to sustain incoming Life based damage but Immortal Ambition disables those factors making only Life Leech recover Energy Shield while on Full Life. With Vaal Pact doubling the Leech speed and leech rate and disabling Life regen.

Off that, the following modifiers are placed. Life regen has no effect. Energy Shield recharge and Regeneration are Disabled. All damage taken will go directly into the Life Bar. Life Leech while at full life will recover Energy Shield, and when not on full Life will recover life. Life Leech will be overall halved by Eternal Youth but then essentially doubled by Vaal Pact. It's almost a complex version of Eldritch Battery/Ghost Reaver. Provided this is indeed the way it turns out, what builds do we think this would provide to?

Through the use of Leech naturally it would be wise to go into a Slayer build. Essentially with the Overkill and the not removed at Maximum, your leech should in theory sustain both a Life and Energy Shield pool, provided the incoming damage isn't killing you. With the Hematophagy notable you can further boost the natural leech and therefore Sustain.

Additionally, it looks as though if Everlasting Sacrifice is indeed related to blood spells or attacks, that you can fully reserve all Mana, avoid the life cost effects, essentially reducing the negative of the like of Blood Magic effects and the Blood abilities tradeoff, while sustaining Energy Shield as an effect Mana bar, and Life as a secondary Mana Bar aswell as a Main Health pool. It too would mean you have no need to worry about scaling anything other than max life as that increases your overall Resource bar and therefore more capacity to leech and keep attacking.

Alternatively there is the Chaos, Fire, Lightning, Cold and Spell based leech as Energy Shield effects at the top of the tree. Utilising some kind of Trinity or Tri Element build could utilise these fairly well, but also not sure if the intended effects of it are to scale tri element or an invidual element. Typically these would apply to Hierophant, gaining Spell Leech while under the effects of Arcane Surge. Aswell as Chieftain with the Fire Damage leech base from Hinekora, Death's Fury. Through the use of the Berserker and the Savage hit taken mechanics, (a hit taken of atleast 15% or your maximum life) which essentially will mean your health bar will be Rubber Banding constantly as you leech it back up

Its fairly important to note that leech technically only applies on hits so the likes of Righteous Fire and other non hit builds are out. I haven't yet looked into the new Blood based skills in depth, but a Reap Slayer seems to be the direction it would go. Potentially utilising Cruelty Support and a Nasty base phys damage one hander to scale nasty initial hits, and result in nastier Damage over time effects. Using a weapon such as Bloodseeker could provided the base damage is sufficient, provide an excellent sustain with instant leech but I'm unsure of if this affects the "while leeching modifiers" as if they're instant do they still have that leeching duration? It would also potentially tend to lead into Petrified Blood to soften that incoming damage curve when below 50%, increasing the survivability when in a vulnerable state. The Proximity if using a Slayer to the Defiance and the entire Gladiatorial Combat and Retaliation wheel gives access to some additive block chance, which can potentially lead into a max block option, aswell as add some much needed increased defenses from Shield which will scale up the Armour and Energy Shield a bit more.

I would love to hear your feedback and thoughts on Mahuxotl's Machination. As always, best of luck, Exiles.

Looking for pure phys impale skellies build

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 08:32 PM PDT

Is this a good idea? I'll be playing on a big priv league, but it's still going to feel ssf-like I imagine. I can't seem to find any relatively recent info on this build through Google. Any input would be appreciated especially if you have a pob :D. Thanks!

Looking for a specific league starter.

    Posted: 13 Apr 2021 02:22 AM PDT

I am looking for a very specific league starter (which i dont even know exists?) with the following restrictions:

    • Has to be a build that can scale (low to medium entry cost but can be scaled up with good investment (100+ ex ish).
    • Has to be able to do all or most content solo (especially bosses).
    • Has to be able to work well with a support ( a friend which plays only the start of the league. He told me it would be cool if it scales with attack speed or cast speed and something like phys conv?)
    • Has to work without said support. Decent clear and medium defenses (Does not have to be a jugg or anything but should have some form of sustain and not be a glass canon since i am not a dodge god).
    • No mines. I hate em.

I am aware that I ask very much of one build but maybe I am in luck and somebody got an idea for me.

Edit: Forgot to mention: Please also no BV. Hate that aswell.

New blood spells - phys dot cwc or coc?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 08:20 PM PDT

I was considering the new builds and thought of something interesting:

Trickster with cyclone, MoM + Eldritch battery + Petrified blood and CWC Reap or Exsanguinate, + some combination of new phys/hit/dot gems (Corrupting Fever, Petrified Blood, Cruelty Support)

Or would Assassin with some form of COC beat this everytime?
