I just realized I’m getting old

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 09:53 AM PDT

Well, it just hit me. I don't know why I'm posting this here, after so many years gaming, so many forums. I suddenly feel old and I wanted to say something about that to all of you. So firstly, I am 35 years old, not necessarily "old" but definitely not young.

I remember playing original Nintendo at my neighbors house when I was about 6 or 7 years old. At the same time I played some very basic DOS games on the pc my dad bought. Imagine being 7 and trying to beat Battletoads hah. My friend used to hit me when we'd die because of frustration. Through the years I got a Nintendo Gameboy, then later a Nintendo 64. We played neighborhood smash tournaments and Mario Kart 64 for daaaays.

I got heavily into PC gaming when I was about 12. I scrapped parts from old computers and built my own so my dad let me put it in my room. My dad had a regular phone line and paid for a second phone line so we could have dedicated dialup internet. I figured out how to put two modems together so I could double our dialup connection to try to get an edge on Quake when I played on Gamespy.

Then came Diablo II, then Battlefield 1942 and original Call of Duty. And on and on and on. We did LAN parties because internet just didn't cut it. Eventually World of Warcraft came out in 2004 when I was a senior in high school. In all things gaming, I was an expert. I stayed on top of strategies and tactics. I made sure to try all new games. It was a passion. I went to college and due to ADD and lack of motivation, I barely made it out with a bachelors in philosophy after six years.

I got married and landed a law enforcement job. My job was awesome, I loved it and still love it to this day. I felt like I was playing a cop GTA mod every night haha. But family time and then four kids really bit into gaming time. It's been years since I haven't been anything but a totally casual gamer. My time is now spent on dumb phone games mostly because I don't want to neglect my wife, kids or job.

Now, I watch my kids play games. I try to direct them to the classics so they have fond memories but they love Fortnite so much right now. It's weird to see they are more hardcore than me. I decided to fire up a game recently and landed on Path of Exile. Using Enki's guide, I made an Arc Elementalist and started following the build as I leveled it up. SO MUCH FUN. SO LITTLE TIME LOL. I think I'm about level 60-something and it's been about a month. I get on the forums and read all of your discussions and… I feel old. The amount of meta that is discussed that I don't have a clue what you are talking about is crazy. The depth of the game and the fact that I know I have no chance at anything but dipping my feet in, is bizarre.

What I really want to say in all this: I hope this happens to all of you too someday. I have great memories of gaming for many years. The greatest things I have experienced in my life, despite my passions, have been marriage and children and being a service to my community.

I feel old but it feels good to play again. I found my first exalted orb yesterday. Hopefully I can find many more. Thanks for making a great community. The community in POE is hilarious and fun.

If some total noob asks a completely dumbass question in general chat, it may be me. Take pity on an "old" gamer and spare some advice lol. See you in the game (occasionally, during the evenings).

Darkee Redemption Project: using 10k fuses to link similar Karui Choppers

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 01:49 PM PDT

Darkee failed to 6-link his Karui Chopper during the AoE Gauntlet 3.14 race (Ziz x Shopify Rebellion HCSSF Class Gauntlet), so I wondered how much the RNG failed him.

I bought 10805 fuses and made 13 Karui Choppers similar to the one he had (ilvl 69, two signature physical mods, 48% quality).

I have linked 10 choppers. The 11th one didn't link.

The number of fuses that it took for each chopper to link are as follows: 68 194 2501 1087 256 585 776 83 2481 1643.

The last chopper took 1131 fuses and didn't link.

Average number of fuses it took for a chopper to link is 967.4

Please correct me if I'm wrong on this: The sample size of 10 events, even without early stopping, is too small to do any meaningful statistics.

However, even without stats, the experiment has shown that a 6-link can easily take more than 2k fuses, even on a 48% quality weapon.

The Gauntlet event made me try HC for first time. It’s been very fun!

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 01:16 AM PDT

I'm a SC player, I've only ever played SC but I decided to try HC for the first time ever because of the gauntlet event Ziz is hosting.

HC has been very nerve wracking and invigorating, it's definitely given me fresh perspective on the game, and killing Kitava on HC was so exciting! (I didn't expect to make it this far!)

I really appreciate this event and I hope Ziz gets a lot of positive feedback from this, because it's been super cool, even though I can't compete with the streamers for the cash or anything, the whole "raffle thresholds" are awesome and give you something to strive for. I'd definitely do another event like this in the future!

What have I learned most from trying HC? Probably boss mechanics, boss damage types and how to prepare for each big boss.

To end I'd just like to say; thank you Ziz for making this event happen, and for encouraging people like me to try out Hard Core.

Hydrosphere does not double DPS of Orb of Storms

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 09:45 PM PDT

EDIT: CommissarTyr commented that Orb of Storms (OoS) deals double damage only when the target is outside the radius of OoS. I tested this and confirmed that they are right. I also found that OoS must be triggered by your lightning skills (tempest shield) to cause double damage. Thus, I made two mistakes in my test. Sorry for spreading misinformation, but I'm sure this new conclusion is useful to people playing the build.

A lot of people on Reddit seem to believe that hydrosphere allows orb of storms to hit the same enemy twice, doubling its DPS. My experiment using self-poison shows that this is not the case. The details of the experiment is given in the video description.

Fortify - weird behaviour in PoB

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 09:00 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm playing on gauntlet and wanted to check my PoB. There's an interesting behaviour - when ticking on Fortify, my average hit damage decrease by 11%, bleed and impale dmg decrease as well and skill radius decreases by 1 as well. Here's PoB: https://pastebin.com/7fCirYG8 Any idea what's wrong?

Hello, does awakening level effect elder and uber elder drops/health/damage or it is only for the Atlas maps?
