Gearing your character and build diversity - GGGs vision vs the reality of it

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 02:41 AM PDT

This is not suppossed to be a rant-thread. I merely want to emphasize to GGG, that their vision might not be a realistic one.

So - what is GGGs vision of gearing your character? - For them, we'd ideally gear our character with either A) gear we find on the ground or B) craft them with the probabilistic crafting methods available. Fair enough, right?

The problem for the average (or above average) player - It is not feasible. Sure, we've had leagues without deterministic crafting, but we also didn't have all the new endgame with Maven, etc. The game progresses and if we've seen one thing, then it's that deterministic crafting kept the game alive and build diversity high.

The reality is, that most players will save up currency to buy the gear they want. I know very little people, that actually craft their gear with fossils or orbs. Most times, for the average player, it's also simply more expensive and with higher risk to craft something, instead of just searching for an item that has the mods you want and then saving for it (unless you want something very specific).

GGG, this is the reality of how players gear their character.

And the problem I have with this is, that deterministic crafting kept me playing and gearing way longer than Ultimatum or Expedition.

Without this crafting system, you quickly reach a point, where items become too expensive to justify farming the currency for it, just for like a 5% dmg boost.

Let me show you something. This is an item, I crafted in Ritual.

Is it worth a couple hundred ex in standard? - Yes.

Is it blatently overpowered? - Yes.

Did it take me 60-80h, while I was already farming A9 Sirus? - YES.

And I want you to pay attention to the last one - I was already farming A9 Sirus at the time. I was already hitting major endgame rewards and it STILL took me almost double of your workweek to craft this. I feel like GGG sees these items and thinks they are common or something - NO. They. are. not. There are countless hours invested, but it was worth it. I was working towards a goal - finishing that item (or, well... I made two of these). This kept me playing 2,5/3 months! In Ultimatum I left after a little over 2 weeks and I don't see myself going any longer in Expedition. Why? - Because the tradeoff of investment/reward are so god damn low. If I farm for 80h/week in this league, I wouldn't get nearly as much. I'm not going to farm countless hours to get essentially almost nothing.

You fear the game is too rewarding (and I'm not talking about the Ultimatum interview here), but that is bs. People like me started, because we want to zoom-zoom. The game is designed to zoom-zoom. And we want builds that can accomplish that. Sure, I can play Ice Trap with medium investment and perma-freeze Sirus or something, but is that what you want? Or would you rather see people waste crazy hours on items, such that I showed you and play crazy builds you didn't think were ever gonna make it?

Build diversity is encouraged by it. I wouldn't ever try an off-meta build right now, because finding items for those very specific weird cases is hard/impossible and as I said - crafting is usually even less rewarding.

What do I want to accomplish? - Don't destroy your game.

People said Ritual was the best league ever for a reason - and it was not for the mechanic or the atlas expansion.

There are many more things to add here, such that Rog may be a blessing for SSF, but for trade league he's quite useless, if you want anything remotely specific.

Hope you change your design vision to be fun again.

I made a Gwennen Gambler tool to help determine what is most valuable to pick

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 09:43 AM PDT

Hi Everyone, I'm an accountant who programs in python (for work and fun), and for challenge wanted to see if I can make a program that determines the value of possible uniques based on the base types in Gwennen's gamble.

Here is how it looks like

It does not dynamically detect where is the window, so if you do not use 1080p fullscreen (borderless or not), it might require additional setup (anyone knows how to do it?). Might not work on non-single screen setups.

For the values, it does not filter out any unique, so if a league unique is impossible to gamble, it will still be included in the dataset.

Should be safe, as it does not send any action to the server (just copies the item data to clipboard).

Please read the github readme before using it.

If you would like to contribute, feel free. I'm not a professional programmer, so code might be a bit messy, but I've tried to keep it as clean as possible.

Not sure if I will support it further, but if I do, I'll probably add some real interface instead of using CMD window, maybe even an overlay. I'll be working on an update with an option to exclude fated uniques and a user-configured blacklist. I'll be also including a simple GUI to operate the program.

Player with 4146 hours, all content cleared, played every league. - feedback.

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 11:09 PM PDT

At the time of writing, I have recorded 4146 hours played on steam. I have killed everything in the game. Mirror of Kalandra has not dropped, I have played every league, usually to 26-35/40 challenges done and my favorite build to play is EA or Split arrow + Chain just to see the massive amount of projectiles fly. I played HC up to Legacy league but after that, too many random D/C's freezes make it impossible. Highest HC character I've got has been EA Elementalist, 99,97% F.

here is my feedback as a whole.

    THE GOOD

    • Voice acted audio gives massive life to named bosses and the new league bosses. It's awesome.
    • Damage & Flask nerfs.
    • The attempt to make the game slower.
    • Meta shakeup is good, but it didn't work. (summoner top dog)
    • Many ways to craft.

    THE BAD

    • Bloat, Unveiling for example is garbage.
    • Game is too bottom heavy, takes 40 hours for the game to begin.
    • Chase items are not items. They are chase clusters and watchers eyes.
    • Many skills are not competitive at the beginning and begin to function at 92+ player level, why?
    • Why are there splinters, more splinters and even more splinters. This league is ½ inventory worth of splinters.
    • My PC is decent, but I can't do max Delirium or other content like this because of the lag, fps drops etc.
    • Trading is god awful. As is tradition since the beginning of times.

These are to name a few. Here are my three suggestions that should be fixed.

    • 1) Turn splinter systems into favor systems. You know in WoW, when you kill a mob it gives +5 reputation to X? The league mechanic now is to stop playing the map, click 5 times, kill mobs, click chests 10 times, then click what drops from chest 1-25 times, then click the splinters into your Chest and begin to enjoy the fun part of the league, which is to gamble, via Gheed or crafting an item etc. This system could be changed into favor, after you kill a mob, you gain favor +5 to Gheed and this favor is the currency you use to gamble. Easy fix and suddenly no splinters.

    • 2) The atlas grind, and the system resets each league are too much. Once you are at 100% / level 6 Awakener, now it begins to feel like you are playing the game and the grind towards maven begins since the splinters for maven begins to drop. It's also desperately un-fun to unveil every league, to level up heist every league etc. Ease up on these systems heavily or make them level up without the player noticing. As for example ''Selling an unveiled item to vendor, randomly grants unveil that would otherwise be granted my choosing it''.

    • 3) Game is too bottom heavy. For me its easy, but my friend who has never played the game before, wiped on HILLOCK for 40 minutes and quit. For a 2k+ hour player, the game begins after you got 8 ascendancy points. 100%+ completion on the atlas and awakener begins to drop loot. For an inexperienced player, Hillock is the final boss. This is insane.

All in all. I love the game. I hope the code gets fixed from its abomination state. I think the league is great. If issues like these begin to get fixed and there is much less laborious work to be done to actually play the game. then GG. ALVA and BEYOND are a perfect example of non-laborious but fun league mechanic.

If you want GGG, I can link my acc in private message to prove I have the hours in this game. Much love.

EDIT: About point 3), Since so many people are upset about it. I've done my friend dirty by saying he has wiped on Hillock for 40 minutes. This isn't true since he didn't beeline to Hillock 1v1 him for 40min and lose. But he spent 40 minutes on twilight strand, killed the mobs, opened the rocks, inspected the gems and ended up dying a couple of times on Hillock and quitting the game. So it isn't as dramatic as I made it out to be. Sorry. Yet the point about the game being too bottom heavy remains.

An Example: In Diablo 2, if you begin the game as a Necromancer, you are given a wand, teeth -spell and a simple quest ''go and find the den of evil''. You have auto-attack and teeth. Then you level up Summon Skeleton. This is it from level 1 to level 6. In PoE, when you begin the game, by the time you make it to coast, you are met with a lot a lot more complex skill-system, you face the league-mechanic which can be quite complex, you'll probably hit level 2 here and meet the skill-tree (which is awesome btw) and so on. So the complexity is out of this world, not to mention more in-depth things such as suffix/affix, how item level works in terms of sockets and rolls, what is ''additional'' and what is ''more'' damage and so on. It ramps up very, very fast. A physical damage weapon with good rolls for level 12, loses all its power by the time you are at Vaal in act 2. You get the point.

So, do you think the changes in 3.15 successfully promoted build diversity? (The same 5 ascendencies make up 74% of builds this league)

Either no more splinters or make them autopickup on proximity

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 03:22 AM PDT

Even if they go to our inventory, please no more clicking, you can show a big counter if you want us to value them, but please! Automatic splinter pickup or no more splinters/currency shards! Also how about stacking currency that drops from one single source, like strongboxes, delirium, incursion, blight portals, abyss, etc.

New CWDT Loop With Forbidden Rite and Petrified Blood - No Uniques Necessary!

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 10:53 AM PDT

Alright, guys. I've been toying with this idea ever since I realized that the damage you take from Forbidden Rite is actually a "Hit". (It triggers the "Gain an endurance charge when hit" mechanic, so it's a hit)

If you run a lower level CWDT with Forbidden Rite and run Petrified Blood to spread the damage out over time, you can loop the Forbidden Rite to continually cast and continually damage yourself, triggering higher-level CWDT spells. Petrified Blood is absolutely necessary, because you would otherwise be trying to trigger a second Forbidden Rite before the .25s cooldown was over.

This also requires you to have high life so that you take more damage from Forbidden Rite. And a Divergent CWDT (Wow, they're expensive) can definitely help on triggering it and definitely triggering your main damaging spell.

You also need a *lot* of life regen to mitigate your self-damage. There are a lot of hoops to jump through to get this to work, as is often the case for a lot of CWDT builds. The mana costs are certainly an issue, too. Thankfully, the mana multipliers have been reduced a bit to make this more doable.

Why would you go through all this trouble?

My main thought, upon seeing the new skill gems, was to set up a CWDT build using Voltaxic Burst to constantly trigger as I run through a map and everything dies. Mana costs made that more difficult, so I thought about doing CwC with Voltaxic Burst and cycloning around. Unfortunately, this keeps you from being able to fully convert your damage to chaos with Voltaxic Rift.

So the idea is to set up Voltaxic Burst to go off constantly (or really any other spell you want on CWDT for top damage) without having to use a Heartbound Loop with all those To Dust jewels. It frees up some tree/jewel slots and item slots, as no unique items are necessary to make it work. Unfortunately, it requires a really high amount of life and life regen to be able to survive it. And likely those ridiculously expensive(I'm a filthy casual with little time to play, 7ex for a gem is beyond me) Divergent CWDT gems - at least to make it easier.

    tl;dr
You can do full CWDT loops without uniques just by setting up Forbidden Rite on CWDT with Petrified Blood to spread out the damage.

u/jousis or other folks better than I am can probably figure out a way to make it work. Just thought I'd share the idea in case no one else has had it.
