    Policy Discussion (Part 5 - Self-Promotion)

    Posted: 09 May 2020 02:50 PM PDT

    Part 5 - Self-promotion

Oh, That['s] a juicy one Exile!

    ---Einhar, Head Beast Moderator

This will be a large one so buckle down boys and girls. This is easily one of the most slippery and volatile policies we have. Not in terms of number of people affected, no, but in the amount of times we've had to adjust, discuss and reassess our guidelines for self-promotion. This is in no small part due to how many great, and occasionally heated, in-depth discussions we've with content creators over the past year.

What the self-promo rule is fighting

Clear and simple, this rule is intended to prevent the sub from becoming an ad platform. We get regular posts from bot accounts linking to youtube/twitch/etc that we try to stay on top of, but also highly frequent posts from and about a single person's external site/product/etc. These are what are called bad faith posts/posters.

Conversely good faith posters can also be an issue. There will be examples to illustrate this later but the long and short of it is a poster with legitimate motivations and great content that, for one reason or another, can still unintentionally create an issue for the sub. In the context of excessive self-promotion this is usually in the form of a high rate of posting but can extend to other scenarios.

    Current Policy

The rule is against EXCESSIVE self-promotion. Just want to be abundantly clear here, we are not against self-promotion as a whole. Content creators are hugely important for the sub and if anything should be encouraged. However there are times when those kinds of posts are exploited in either quantity (spam) or quality (hey buy my shirt!).

Currently we use a relatively common reddit hardline: the 10:1 ratio, to regulate self-promotion content between good-faith and bad-faith actors. What this means is that for every one self-promotion post someone puts up on the sub they need to have ten comments/posts elsewhere (as in not in their own self-promo post). Ideally this means all self-promotional content that gets through us is being posted by users who are already an active member of the sub.

But the amount of variety of content that can be posted on this sub is massive, and as such there are many many times where we need to bend our own hardlines to make stuff work. Particularly for good faith posters. In these cases we try to work directly with them to try and reach a compromise. An example of this would be us asking them to post a weekly consolidated post or something similar to prevent them from posting every day and crowding out other posts.

And on that note we also have a general guideline of keeping the FP from getting crowded out by any single person. When one poster has several self-promo content posts on the front page it's a red light for us to try to work with the poster as mentioned before. This one's an admittedly gray area between excessive self-promo, duplicate content, and on rare occasion low effort.

    Current policy, known issues

A large reason why both good faith and bad faith situations can be hard to deal with is our sub's unique ebb and flow (lot of people 1st month, very few 3rd month). We attract just as many self-promotion posts as a large sub but in the tail end of a league we don't have enough buffer from other posts to self-correct. In particular this can lead to us having to remove good faith posts later in the league when they would've been fine earlier, and this inevitably confuses good faith posters and even worse discourages new content creators from posting.

A second issue is probably somewhat obvious. The 10:1strategy has a pretty poor bare minimum that can be abused. Ten comments of "Neat" technically fulfills 10:1 and while someone doing that will probably not be posting in good faith, it allows them to make arguments against the policy and generally play the victim.

    Casestudy: ThisisBadger's Road to Headhunter

This is the series that really brought this subject to a head. You can see it from the start to the end yourself for 100% accuracy but to give a brief summary u/ThisIsBadger started a text series called 'Road to Headhunter' where everyday he would update the community on his strategies towards the endgoal of getting a Headhunter. The reports were incredibly detailed, fun to read and just generally entertaining. Even better this was during the dead period (late 2nd - early 3rd month) of Legion league so it was a welcome sight for a lot of people. Due to this the modteam (myself included) elected to let the posts through despite them coming in everyday.

Due to the popularity of the posts u/ThisIsBadger (very understandably) started streaming and making youtube videos for the series, and naturally including these links in the posts. This put us in a very awkward spot as we were already bending our policy, to still do so while Badger was also linking to their own external accounts was beyond what we felt we could allow. So we reached out to them and after lengthy discussion and numerous suggestions from both sides Badger elected to continue his series (and future ones) outside of Reddit.

Make no mistake, this entire situation was a failure on our end. From the start we made an exception to our current policy which very understandably confused not just Badger but many others, and then we had to step back into our normal policy with only minimal warning. u/ThisIsBadger was very civil and made numerous good points but in the end it came down to enforcing a precedent that we had failed to enforce from the beginning, and that caused headaches on all sides.

To keep this summary as unbiased as possible as well as giving you all as much possible context on this I asked u/ThisIsBadger to look over this discussion pre-posting as well as be present in the comments when possible. I did not get a response so I hope I covered all the bases well enough.

    Casestudy: Lunawolve's Chaos Report

So if any of you have been on the sub within the last few months you may have seen at least one of u/LunaWolve's Chaos Report videos. In summary for those who haven't Lunawolve breaks down current and possible market predictions per league, and as markets go this requires frequent updates over the (at least) first month. This is another perfect example of good faith content. It's useful, people like it, and it's just the kind of thing people come to the sub to find. The inevitable --but-- though comes with post frequency and as such we talked to Luna about the Chaos report frequency. Specifically in the context of the chaos report video and the follow-up text version a few days later.

To summarize the conversation Luna posted their video asap and had a text version (not a transcript, an actual structured post) between 1-4 days later. At the time we were trying to keep a recurring series to weekly throughout an entire league (admittedly there was probably some overcompensation due to the fallout from Badger's series just a little earlier) so that doubling up was an issue. But if Luna waited to bundle the two together the video would likely be out of date, so we were at an impasse. In the end we had to put our foot down and Luna stopped the text releases to keep the series weekly.

And as an aside I personally want to thank Luna, they understandably protested but never lost their cool even though we were giving them a very frustrating situation. And when they announced the change on the videos they kept it professional.

I also asked u/LunaWolve to lookover and join this discussion post so please feel free to get their opinion on the matter as well!

    Casestudy: Misc Exceptions

What's a constantly adjusted vague case-by-case rule without a few exceptions? Posts like Neversink's loot filters or openarl's PoB update posts are technically in violation of 10:1 at times. But of course we don't remove them or similar posts. The reason being is two-fold. First off they do not post frequently enough to be an issue. We rarely if ever pull out self-promo rules on users who post around once a league. Secondly they're usually grandfathered in. These kinds of tradition posts had been going before we started worrying about bot/shill accounts, post flooding, etc.

Another exception for the 10:1 policy also just happened this week (although this was in terms of post frequency, not self-promotion). In case you missed it, user chux123 had been posting (absolutely stellar) hideout-art of popular anime and film characters everyday for about a week. This gave ThisIsBadger themed red flags and we decided to warn him about our 10:1 policy, however that was when we found out that there was a language barrier. After a lot of discussion we concluded that the 10:1 policy should not apply to non-english speaking users, as that's an unreasonable expectation to hold. A more specific breakdown can be found here.

    Thoughts? Questions?

This was a lot to throw out at you guys so please feel free to ask for clarification anywhere.

As you can probably surmise, our previous handling of major recurring series has left the modteam in doubt as to the effectiveness of our current self-promotion content. In particular how and when to handle good faith content in a fair, consistent manner.

So what do you all think? Is the 10:1 policy enough? Too much? Do you know of a better hardline or do you feel we should move in a more case-by-case (read: intentionally vague) direction? Are there any other issues with Rule 7 that you've personally run into?

How often is too often for content creators to post? Is 'too much' even a thing in your opinion?

Reddit, please don't ruin Path of Exile

    Posted: 09 May 2020 11:46 PM PDT

I've seen a staggering amount of posts about how great the Chinese client is. Sure, there's some cool features. But most of it is mobile game level pay to win garbage. GGG is making a great effort keeping that shit away from the western client.

Trust me, you don't want to open that door. For once it's open it cannot be closed. And GGG knows that.

A great game finds a balance between the developers vision and what the players finds fun. I'm concerned that they'll actually listen to some of you and implement more micro transactions, account bound items, auctions house that will ruin longevity and make everything supercheap, free respecs so decisions doesn't matter.

If you're concerned about picking up items and flask management, just take a break and rest your wrists and play something else.

Items and decisions have weight in the Western client. China doesn't have that.

I usually don't speak up, but Reddit, please don't ruin the game.

    Hey Everyone!

Episode 26 of Forever Exiled, A Path of Exile Podcast Has Been Released!

In Episode 26 we talked lots about upcoming leagues and PoE 2. It's exciting to think that we're only a couple (or a few) leagues away from PoE 2's release! Sounds like some predictions must be made! We also had a good time deciding if we'd like PoE today, playing for the first time, not knowing anything about the game. There's lots of good talk and an amazing Newbie Tip of the Week ;). Thanks for listening!

[Serious] Writhing Jar is a Fishing item. What in-game or official GGG hints have we missed about its function, if any?

    Posted: 10 May 2020 01:58 PM PDT

This is a real discussion. The [redacted]/Muted/Banned memes can be fun, but we're here to solve a puzzle. Let's please skip those for this post.

Patch 3.9 introduced the divination card Baited Expectations. Our testing quickly determined that the Writhing Jar is one of many officially confirmed Fishing items.

We are searching for (1) in-game hints; and (2) official GGG out-of-game hints from comments/posts/media that reference or allude to the Writhing Jar. Has anyone ever found any?

    More background:

For a long time many players speculated that Writhing Jar might be relevant for fishing; the worms seem like bait, after all. But that was all pure wild theory. There was no hard evidence that the item was in fact a Fishing item. The Writhing Jar has existed for a long time -- it was first released on Mar 4 2016 as part of patch 2.2.0.

Then, over 3 years after the item's release, patch 3.9 occurred and confirmed the Writhing Jar as a Fishing item. Many people were caught off-guard by this, since no one had found any official clues or hints related to Writhing Jar during those 3+ years. Contrast this to other Fishing items such as Fairgraves' Tricorne, Rainbowstride, or Slitherpinch: these other items each had multiple in-game connections to fishing, and had appeared in multiple teasers / hint images from official GGG sources.

We began looking for any clues we'd missed: watching old GGG videos, searching reddit comment history, using Wayback Machine to check images from Chris's old forum posts, etc.

Eventually some of our researchers (Alex_leetduelist and others) noticed that the old 2016 April Fool's Trade Improvements post by Chris Wilson featured four Writhing Jars alongside an inventory of 520 Albino Rhoa Feathers. Unfortunately this post was (1) made on April Fool's Day; and (2) chock-full of memes and jokes, so it's difficult to determine if this is a real hint or just for fun. (Tangent: The associated reddit discussion also included a possible hint from Chris about Animated Guardian. In fact this is not the only time Chris has alluded to Animated Guardian, but that's probably a topic for another post!)

Unfortunately as of today, that single tenuous post is all we've found potentially referencing the Writhing Jar. Given that the other Fishing items have many out-of-game and in-game hints, it seems likely that we've missed something despite our efforts.

If you've ever found an official clue on the Writhing Jar, we'd love to hear about it!

Craicic Chimeral being monopolized by a one player guild with a few alt accounts... How is this fair?

    Posted: 09 May 2020 09:20 PM PDT

Went to buy to try and buy the beast because I really need to have a safe way to regal a helmet I just made. There are/were over 2,000 listings up, noticed that most were being listed by the same guy. I Put that guy on ignore and then another guy with tons of listings up too so I put him on ignore also, then saw again another guy with almost the same name as the other two and put him in ignore. This took over 1,000 of the total listings off, how in the world is this acceptable? Blows my mind, no wonder people have issues putting things up for sale. This same person is doing this with numerous other beasts.

Typically I move on but damn this is just wrong but I guess this is what Poe is about? Like I'm trying to craft something but I have to go through all these hoops and blow all these whistles before I can accomplish the next step.

I don't see how this is any better than some type of pseudo auction house. Items, beast and anything else being manipulated and controlled by bots regardless and it being a pain in the ass for no reason on top of it.

*edit* Yes I did attempt to buy them from the first guy, then also the second and the third guy. After seeing how many were listed I looked into the actual issue and discovered what I posted. I'm sorry I thought it was implied that I tried to buy the beasts while going through this madness.

What is the most fun you've had in PoE?

    Posted: 10 May 2020 12:42 PM PDT

For me, it has to be the Synthesis Flashback event. I got #1 for my ascendancy, I played melee and SSF for the first time, I even got a delve depth announcement (250!). I managed to chance a unique I needed and even bought a Belly from Perandus. I normally only play casually (the most competitive I had been was trying to get a first in hideout message) but I really felt like I got a full PoE experience during that event. To be fair, it was my first Flashback since I started playing during Betrayal.

I always see a lot of negativity in this sub, but I know most of you have actually, genuinely enjoyed this game before. So what was the most fun experience you've had?

Intended difference between "hit by your spells" mod tags?

    Hey,

so as I have an open mod on one of my rings, I was checking which mods would be a nice addition for my build. When I was checking the shaper prefixes I really wondered why does life gain have the "caster" metacraft tag, while mana gain doesn't? Is this intended or a mistake on GGGs side? I just don't see why mana gain shouldn't have the caster tag.

Before I slam, I'd want to use catalysts to increase my odds for the mod and imbued ones would have less options than fertile, thus would be better.

Those who have gotten huge drops early in league, how did it affect your experience?

    Posted: 10 May 2020 10:48 AM PDT

I'm curious. Every league or two there is usually a picture within the first week or month of league of someone dropping a Headhunter or less commonly a Mirror early in league and I'm wondering how this affected the rest of the league experience. Did it ruin it? Make it more fun?

The biggest drop I've ever gotten was a House of Mirrors this league last week and it enabled me to start a budget herald build when I was actually starting to feel some boredom, but I could also see a huge drop kind of ruining the grind of the game as a lot of players goals are to earn those same drops.

    Let me know your experiences!
