Reflecting on the December events: Competitive Path of Exile tests stamina/endurance more than skill/efficiency, and I'm proposing an alternative format.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 09:43 AM PST

    tldr:

The current competitive event format is unhealthy, and favours those with more time to play. An alternative format based on capping game-time ('/played') instead of real-time could be equally competitive but more fair and accessible across the player base.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Firstly, I expect some amount of disagreement/backlash for this post but that's fine; I hope it promotes some discussion about the topic and I'm keen to hear other players' experiences and views.

Secondly, I am not suggesting scrapping the current format of events, rather suggesting an alternative format which could run in parallel to suit those with busier lifestyles.

    THE DECEMBER EVENTS

Just over two days into the SSF Mayhem event in December, I hit level 95 on Trickster after 1 day, 8 hours of play time and I'm top 10 in the ladder (about 7th, from memory).

I feel like I can catch those above me and go for top 5 to win a demigod. My character isn't dying in Tier 14-16 maps and I can easily sustain these without risk.

However, at this point I made the decision to give up, before I cracked up...

    STILL SANE, EXILE?

Whilst my Trickster was having a fantastic time, I realised I was not. I'd slept a lot less than usual since the event started and had low quality sleep, dreaming about endlessly clearing maps.

During these first two days, I'd not exercised or eaten healthily, I'd made excuses to get out of family stuff and other games with friends. I'd was getting some repetitive strain injury in my left hand from the constant usage of flasks and utility skills.

Honestly, by now I was starting to question what the point of playing this game even was.

And yet... when I checked the ladder, all those Tricksters above me had clocked even more time than I had, some of them only a few hours less than the maximum possible.

Perhaps some of these players are godlike humans that require very little sleep, or possibly a single account is being shared between multiple players on a sleep rotation. Or they'd simply left POE logged in whilst they slept. Who knows?

By this point it was clear that it would be a race to Level 100, which means logging 3-4 days of playtime. I decided to give up to preserve both my mental and physical health. I dread to think about the state I would be in, had I carried on at this pace. Perhaps some players thrive off the struggle, but this concentrated level of gaming just can't be good for you!

Don't get me wrong though, I do enjoy the endgame grinds and have done 40/40 most of the leagues I've played.

I had a similar experience in the softcore 'Endless Delve' event (depth 764), though to a lesser extent as strategy/creativity played a much bigger part in that.

I didn't really bother much with the Heist flashback, as I'm fairly bored of the mechanic now like many others on here.

    THE PROBLEM, IN MY OPINION

Within a group of players of similar skill playing an XP-based event, the one that plays the most during the event will almost always win (assuming similar strategy/build etc). It's tragic to have this a winning strategy when such real-life sacrifices must be made (see above paragraph).

A skilled and knowledgeable POE player with real-world commitments (e.g. job, family, social life) could never compete equally in the current format against a less-skilled POE player with no commitments and is able to play 12+ hours each day. To compete for a demigod in the format of the December events, you not only have to be very good at the game, but also play an insanely concentrated amount in a short space of time.

By comparison, most other competitive games (e.g. League of Legends, Fortnite, CS:GO) have fixed win conditions per match. The players can rest fully in-between matches, if they choose to, without impairing their performance.

Although players can still suffer from exhaustion/fatigue, this is not a direct consequence of competing.

    A SENSIBLE SOLUTION

    - A parallel event based on 'in-game' time ('/played'), rather than 'real-world' time. This stat is already tracked in the ladders, even on private profiles.

    - This format would have a 'cut-off point' e.g. 3 days played. This value could be changed depending on the event, and would be pre-determined for all players before the start.

    - When the character hits this moment, their progress would be 'frozen' until the end of the event, and fixed in the ladder. This includes level, XP, boss kills etc.

    - As with the other December events, changing ascendancy would be disallowed. Furthermore, each new character would require a stash reset, to avoid using gear farmed on a separate character (as this would totally defeat the purpose of this format!)

    - This event style would only really work in SSF (not trade), but having a 'duos' or 'trios' version would be exciting too and broaden strategy ideas.

    - The event would last around 6-8 times longer than the 'cut-off' time. So for a cut-off of 3 days, the event would last around 3 weeks.

    - This means a healthy 3-4 hours of play each day would allow a player to maximise their potential and take their exile as far as any other player, whilst still having a normal healthy life with job, relationships, hobbies etc.

    - This format would 'level the playing field' and remove the advantages that some players have in the current format. It would also eradicate any issues with 'account-sharing' (i.e. sleep rotations), as this would offer no advantage.

    - Players with more time and commitment (e.g. streamers and pros) could compete in several ascendancy classes, instead of putting all their time/effort into a single character like currently.

    - This format would offer a different angle for spectators/casters. Instead of "Player A is so far ahead, can Player B catch them?", it would be more like "Player B has 2 hours remaining, can they make the 30m XP difference and overtake the leader"? There could also be a direct comparison of XP/played across multiple players on a graph, which would be interesting to see.

    - I am aware that shorter format races do exist, for example the Kitava/Atziri/Level 80 races. However, I think these showcase only a small part of what Path of Exile has to offer, and don't cover all of the toughest and most interesting parts of the game.

    - The format above would still test the players' skill at the endgame mapping and bossing, efficiency and build knowledge, without forcing them to neglect their health.

{Suggestion}Increase Maximum number of storms for Icestorm and Firestorm please

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 10:09 PM PST

The maximum number is really bad at 5 for icestorm and 3 for firestorm, this is really few and doesnt make the skills feel less like a storm and more like a drizzle. I will be the first to admit that 20+ storms from mines is OP as hell and tanks performance but the new caps are overkill nerfs to already niche skills.

Suggestion 1: Increase the caps for Icestorm and firestorm to 10-15 each. I think this is fair compromise.

Suggestion 2: Make the number of storms scalable . Something like +1 to maximum number of icestorms per 200 intelligence and+1 to maximum number of fire storms per 5 levels of the skill gem. all while increasing the number of base max storms to 5.

It would be neat if Knockback modifiers acted as Knockback distance modifiers for Pulling skills like Void sphere and Vaal Cyclone

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:51 AM PST

Void sphere is interesting in the concept and the meme

But it's still very fleshed out and GGg seemed to be scared of it with all the limitations they gave to it

For me the Eye of the vacuum is the main point of interest but monsters being sucked so slowly toward it in a game where everything have to go so fast is what kills the skill

If you could increase the speed at which they are sucked in, it would be a great start

And I see no more better mechanic that Knockback to take this roll

It fits logically and it's limited in its quantity

Knockback distance is too rare of a modifier to be interesting and change anything. But if you consider the fact that pulling skills already Knockback, the Knockback modifiers can be converted as extra distance for those, improving their vacuum ability

Inb4 "voidsphere already sucks and that void make it suck harder"

I made a (wannabe) Monte Carlo Simulator for the Twilight Lootboxes. Results inside.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 07:09 AM PST

    Happy New Year Exiles,

So now that I got 4 free lootboxes, it got me thinking: what are the actual odds in these?

I'd like to invite you to think what are the odds of "winning", if you're going for the full set, when opening these boxes before you keep on reading.

I'm not sure anyone did it yet, so (since I'm done for the league) I put a poor man's / wannabe Montecarlo Simulator to check it. It can also be repurposed down the line if you want. Just set up the chances and a macro (absolutely legal in this case) pressing arrow down and pasting values, and leave it running for 20 min or so, should get you about 2-5k runs depending on your PC - or crash your excel.

It's nothing too fancy, I just went making it up as I needed, so it might look a bit like a Frankenstein but it gets the job done.

    TL;DR:

    The results:

    Average 316.49
    St Dev 98.27
    Median 299
    Max 931
    Min 129
    Count 4030

A histogram showing the 4030 runs.

    Link for the excel file.

    Discussion:

I made a model simulating 1000 boxes, which I imagined to be way too much and ran it 4030 times (that's a lot of boxes). However, turns out that an unlucky pal would have spent 931 boxes to get there apparently - so maybe it wasn't that much in the end. It is also worth noting that it didn't overflow (not opening all items in <1000 boxes) in any of the runs, but there is always a chance.

With an average and median of about ~310 boxes or 930 USD / 9300 Points, it is no surprise that you should get the individual items once they come out. That's how lootboxes work after all.

If you are a gambling addict, however, you might be eyeing those 129 boxes, or the low end of the distribution. It is, after all, CHEAPER than the advertised full price tag of all items bought individually (that would be 7970 points for all items, including the combined ones). In fact, 7970 points translate to about 265.67 boxes, and 1388 runs were at 265 or lower box-count.

In other words, there is a 34.4% chance that you would do better opening boxes than buying the all the individual items at full-price. If we take into account the armour packs discounts (120 + 120 + 240), that brings the total to 249.67 boxes, and we had 1069 runs below that threshold, or 26.5% chance to win. I'm not sure about you, but I certainly expected way less than that. (And no, I won't get in the discussion of all the "extra value" of having 10x the 320 points Sunrise Wings rotting in your inventory, they are worthless after the first).

    Model:

As for the model, you may see for yourself, and I'm sure there are more elegant ways of setting it up, but this one took me roughly 30 min to get to the finish line (clear speed meta in full effect). In short, the model is simulating 1000 boxes, checking where the first of each item appears and then checks where the second item of the ones that do the "Combine-Thingy" appears. (I'm sorry that my notation doesn't let you mess around too much in the first sheet without breaking it, but that's how I roll). The minimum boxes needed for the full set are the maximum of all these values for Rare, Uncommon and Common rarities. That means you got at least 1 of each item, and 2 of the ones you combine (1 for you and one to combine). And yes, for the record, I know, #ExcelNotTrulyRandom.

    Closing thoughts:

At 26.5% chance to "win", it is not exactly UNETHICAL odds, but the fact that we have a closed market and so are left with the possibility of having 10 of the same item rotting in the microtransactions tab is certainly disheartening. I obviously would like to see either something closer to 40% with a closed market or an open secondary market to trade between players - even at the current odds I think it would be fine.

Since the chance is not ACTUALLY abysmal (I expected 10% or less to "win" coming in), if I were REALLY bored, I'd solve what is the optimal number of boxes to buy before (i.e. now) and then wait for the shop release in order to complete the set with the individual items - this way minimizing the points spent (if you're going for the full set). Since, let's say, at 90% completion, the expected value of the additional box opened is likely not worth the 30 points (which my model ignores and keeps pushing for the 100%). But I'll leave that exercise for the reader (or do it in the next release) - since my model is not exactly the best starting point for that.

Have fun simulating lootboxes! And pointing out my mistakes in the worksheet (I've found a minor one already while typing this) - if that's your kink.

A pointless rant about Stacked Decks - GGG stealth nerfed Stack Decks and I cant prove it, but they suck now.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 02:07 PM PST

GGG gets to hide everything behind the guise of RNG specifically to keep players from knowing when they "tune" or stealth nerf rates. They change it all the time and players who pay attention can usually see and feel the difference but it's pretty much impossible to prove because even a spread sheet where I show that I opened 50,000 stack decks - would be "too small of sample size".

I just think its a shame that Stacked decks were fun to open 2 or 3 leagues back before something drastically changed and now it just feels awful. I've popped probably about 80-100k of these things over the last year (enough to complete a full mirror from div cards alone) but as of today, Im never opening another one because GGG did what they always do, took something that was fun and gutted it.

I think GGG realized, "Players really liked stack decks, so lets make them drop more". But in doing so, they adjusted down the rate that you get higher rarity cards from them... which, for me, completely ruins the fun of them. Now its just more clicking, for more frequently shittier cards, and a longer but much more boring, drawn out process (when opening 1000+).

I wish this kinda shit didnt happen... and I hate even more that people will, legitimately, say that you could just have bad RNG - but Ive been playing this game for 8 years now and I understand the streakiness of RNG - this doesnt feel like that at all.

Anyways, this is all pointless because I cant prove it and dont care to try, but if you've felt like Stacked Decks have absolutely sucked for the last 2 leagues, and you thoroughly enjoyed them before, then you're definitely not alone.

Thanks for taking something that was awesome and making it an unrewarding chore once again devs.

    Numbers on Secrets of Suffering

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 07:20 AM PST

    Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has done tests or found actual numbers of Secrets of Suffering, meaning Scorch, Brittle and Sap?

Enemy elemental resistances lowered by up to 30%
Up to +15% chance to critically strike afflicted enemies
Affected targets deal up to 20% less damage

I can't seem to find any numbers of how much damage you would need to max these out? Basically all GGG has ever said about these is that they "have a slightly different calculation compared to ignite, chill and shock as they have lower caps on their magnitudes"..

    Builds for ruined wrist

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 09:35 AM PST

Bonk crushed my right wrist and im having tendonitis-like pain for almost 40 Days now...havent touched my computer for almost three Weeks and done a lot of stretching, and it still Hurts and makes any gaming very unpleasurable. I fear for the new league not being able to play at all. I tried CWC cyclone fortify summoner for delve that worked a little better for my wrists, and I could bind cyclone to whatever non-mouse button and it felt alright since the event wasnt focused on zoom zoom and the "map" was purely narrow corridors. As far as I remember This setup sucks for mapping as it is very slow due to cyclone... I also tried to assign "move" to other buttons than left Mouse, but it appears to be locked in place?

So... What builds can you recommend that are decent and require minimal Mouse button use?

    Thanks in Advance😊

What kind of league gameplay mechanic do you prefer?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 08:23 AM PST

What do you enjoy most in terms of how the league mechanic impacts the traditional end game process of mapping.

Do you like something like Heist and Harvest where there's very little overlap between the mechanics and they are done largely separate from one another?

Mechanics like Breach and Legion where you do the maps and collect fragments for their appropriate unique areas?

Or something that's nearly fully injected into your maps like Harbinger, Delirium, and Betrayal? (I know they have end game areas but are largely their mapping components)

I enjoy them all. I think I am ready for something like Harbinger or Delirium. After Heist and Harvest, as well as the upcoming atlas expansion. I kinda want to map and chill.

    Thoughts?

    Party curse bot help

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 04:28 AM PST

Could some experienced cursebot please share their pob or account?

I tried looking on poe ninja and snaps youtube channel but unlike aurabots, every single character that is a cursebot uses different uniques, items and jewels and a different passive tree on top of that.

Ive no idea why they do those choices either.

My party already has an aurabot, discbot so I would need help with the cursebot which ive never played.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 02:31 PM PST

That instead of summarize the builds into: Normal Totem Mine Trap

Change them to: Self cast Trigger Minion Totem Brand Mine Trap

I think it is possible. If one uses summoning skills they are minion, and if one uses coc/cast while channeling they go to trigger.
