    Policy Discussion (Part 2 - PoE Images/Memes)

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 03:12 PM PDT

    Part 1 - Leaks, Results

Hey all, the week 1 discussion went well! While we weren't particularly surprised at the general results we're grateful to the people who were willing to discuss. We're going through logistics at the moment but it was made clear that we should make the sub more leak-friendly. What that exactly entails depends on the who/where/when but currently we're looking at both a preemptive leak thread for the convenience of those looking for leaks as well a leak tag that comes with some required functionality (spoiler-ify, title check, etc). These are not locked in yet, but it's what we're internally discussing.

    Part 2 - PoE Images

Alright so this will be a tricky one, because unlike the other topics we'll cover this is a policy that we feel works well but it may be simultaneously too much and not enough. Yeah….. it's confusing. Hopefully I can clear it up a bit.

For those who are not aware, if someone tries to submit an image or video that doesn't directly contain some PoE images, we remove them. This includes images/video/etc that try to be justified tangentially like (my personal favorite example) "Here's a picture of my dog, his name is Einhar!" and similar posts. Yes that happens, and more often than you'd think. In short, the image itself needs to have PoE imagery.

This hardline of requiring PoE imagery has been used quite often and to a net positive effect. And on top of that it's not even a truly 'invisible' policy as it's a direct clarification of Rule 4. It's definitely not obvious, but it's as visible as it can be without being an entirely separate (and imho redundant) rule.

But naturally we use this policy often, and easily more than 90% of the time it's used on memes, so that's where we'll be focusing our attention.

But they're just memes? What's the harm?

Each individual meme has a good chance of being hilarious and well done. The mod team have found numerous memes we've loved, and similarly memes are one of the few consistently upvoted genres of content on the sub.

The problem with memes/images (less so videos) is their high turnover rate - in other words, their extreme speed of being created and thrown onto the sub. In the time it takes for someone to write a paragraph of a guide or slice out a timestamp of a stream someone else could make 3-4 memes with the various meme-maker tools around the internet. By adding our 'must contain PoE imagery' barrier of entry it slows down the number of incoming memes and images noticeably and gives more controversial content (guides, opinions, builds, etc) much more of a fighting chance.

At the end of the day, memes are great. But they also have the capacity to destroy a sub by flooding it and suffocating other content. That's our primary concern. The goal of our 'must contain PoE Imagery' line is to limit the number of memes/images coming in, and up until recently (read: since about Blight League Launch) that worked fairly well. There were still memes/funny images on the front page but not so many that it was crowding anything out.

    So what's the actual problem?

Traffic. The sub has exploded over the last year and with that much increased traffic we get that many more people doing the barest minimum to get through. So despite our efforts of slowing the rate of incoming memes/images we're fast approaching the point where people are feeling overwhelmed anyway. We've already got numerous complaints about the number of high turnover content such as (but not limited to) memes. In other words, what's been working is quickly becoming not enough.

But here's the tricky part, do we even need to moderate these more? The most direct and immediate response is yes. We have too many memes and therefore we reduce the number, simple. But how do we do that? What additional criteria can we add that we can use consistently?

But at the same time this kind of content is universally well-liked so we could work to tactically encourage these posts. Through things like a meme-day of the week, a recurring meme contest (aka an excuse for a megathread) or even supporting an entirely separate subreddit? There plenty of ideas to think about in terms of redirecting and deflecting this kind of content as opposed to just straight removing them.

    There are two certainties:

    1) We cannot allow memes and other such high turnover content to go completely free, we'd be overrun in less than a week.

    2) We cannot just ban memes and high turnover content universally. Not only would that be a general mistake and universailly hated, but it would be stupid easy for people to skirt around any specific definition of the term.

Can there be a complaints megathread each day?

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 06:53 AM PDT

Feels like 95% of posts are low effort complaining/whining posts, people are mostly saying the exact same thing over and over.

Can we just get it all in one thread so this subreddit is enjoyable again?

    Buying a 4-Link wand

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 08:24 AM PDT

I'm new to this game. Playing as Enki's Arc Witch. I am in the latter half of Act 3. I need a 4Link Intelligence Wand, but the vendors don't have any. I wanted to buy one of another player, but I can't seem to find anyone selling a wand with more than 3 sockets. I thought about using a jewellers orb but I only have 6 of them and apparently the succes rate is 9% so I'm not sure whether to do that or not. Does anyone have any advice for me?

Data from 1000 Sanctified Fossil rolls, and a pretty good approximation of what they do

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 11:01 AM PDT

    Results:

Raw data: full text of every roll in 10 batches of 100

    Method:

    1. Sanctified + Pristine on an ilvl 100 Astral Plate.
    2. Plot frequency of each mod, normalized by its weight (without sanctified), versus its required level. I focused on life mods at first because biggest set of results = smallest variance, but the other mod groups ended up fitting the same trend pretty well.
    3. Use the trend line as a best guess of Sanctified Fossil's effect.
    4. Implement the effect in TheoryCraft and simulate 100k rolls.
    5. Check simulated results against the real ones and make sure they match.

The results in action: plotting the odds of rolling boots with +X life, 35% ms, and tailwind, with and without Sanctified. In the plot with Sanctified, you can see the hump of each life tier formed by Sanctified's "lucky" roll within that tier.

One of the biggest design oversights I've encountered with the Delirium league

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 12:15 PM PDT

By far, the the biggest oversight with Delirium League I've encountered is that Simulacrum splinters aren't called Simulacrumbs.

Add Map Markers for Perandus Chests Please

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 08:38 AM PDT

The problem is when you're doing a delirium map you do not wish sometimes to hang around either because I am doing delirium bosses challenge and must get to the boss fast (500 of them need killing) or because I am moving fast to get the delirium up.

And because you GGG made backtracking sometimes NOT an option I lose the chests!

And because I need to open 150 of them I forget where they are and they can easily blend in the background and as they are not on the map i can miss them.

    Please fix this.

    Thanks

I REALLY hope Sirus isn't the future of this game...

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 09:00 PM PDT

So I've played this game for a long time but ended up missing the AoW launch due to my computer crapping out. So I have no context for the balance changes to Awakener content. So I may very well be late to the party on this discussion...

I finally come back this league and have been enjoying the new atlas system A LOT! You can feel the progress and the atlas boss system is a lot more interactive than the previous elder boss system, and the bosses them selves are fun to fight, also as your gear progress you can feel them dieing faster and faster until you FEEL like a badass when you can kill them in seconds.

One of my favorite things was fighting Uber elder and Shaper when they first came out so I was pretty hyped for Sirus when I had finally gotten to him. I went in blind and got UTTERLY SHIT ON, so needless to say I though it was operator error, laughed it off and figured I would try again later.

Ive now done sirus multiple times. I win some, I loose some. And I can safely say Sirus is one of the worst bits of content PoE has ever released. The fight itself feels like it was designed to piss you off.

The fight is a wall of invincibility phases, displacement and unclear particle effects. I disliked Kitiva for similar reasons too much phasing, but at least while phasing, Kitava didn't murder you. Kitavas abilitys where visually clear and could be reliably dodged by sight alone. Sirus on the other hand is often a visual clusterfuck who spends his time forcing distance from you and killing you with one sided mechanics that wont let you interact with him.

I got so utterly annoyed by the way you end up forced to fight him I made a necromancer with tens of million of dps worth of pets just so I phase him INSTANTLY and don't have to worry about him anymore... i don't want the future of this game to be bosses so utterly unfun that I feel compelled to make a character SPECIFICALLY to deal with it so i can ignore the content...

Its not fun to get destroyed by a boss that covers the arena in purple napalm, off screens you, forces you to disengage combat to the other side of the map and has NO MINION UNITS to restore resources.

I hope for the love of god they NEVER release another boss like this again and that PoE2 has NOTHING like this...

    Trade Site doesn't work again

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 09:03 AM PDT

Same shit different day man. It's really sad that we have to say that every couple of weeks, but it is what it is. For now it's the same stuff as last time, either slow loadtimes or not loading anything at all.

Edit: I know it probably isn't GGG's fault. But it also doesn't make it any better that we have to rely on a highly volatile trade site where the API is constantly fucked, or players are not responding. I really don't wanna turn this into a trade thread, because there are already enough of those. But this isn't difficult trade, it's just tedious and broken.
