Policy Discussion (Part 3 - Megathreads)

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 04:34 PM PDT

Part 2 - PoE Images, results

Last week's policy discussion, poll included, was definitely a confidence booster for the team as both the poll and comments hit on most if not all the topics and views we've discussed internally. In fact all the images that resulted in a draw on the poll were the same images that a lot of us were on the fence on ourselves.

What we took from the discussion is that the option of lessening restrictions on memes and PoE images was in a profound minority. We assumed as much initially but it's definitely nice to have something more tangible to work with. One of the more common requests that we'd be open to is a 'release valve' event that can redirect memes and similar content while not constantly flooding the sub (i.e. a weekly meme-day). This idea was brought up internally as far back as last year, so we'll see what we can do.

    Part X - Megathreads

    Short one this week!

Megathreads are an often seen thing on reddit, but for those who aren't aware a 'megathread' is effectively a specific thread with the purpose of replacing many different threads. Usually for the purpose of consolidating several posts on the same subject to one area.

    When we megathread, examples:

    • Leaks
    • Common 'tradition' posts (e.g. RIP servers, X Take My Energy!)
    • The pinned Questions thread
    • Launch information (although that's more for QoL than to reduce recurring posts)

    When we don't megathread, examples:

    • Related Hong Kong protest posts
    • Sirus complaints
    • Memes
    • MS Paint builds (that was tried and was widely disliked)

We prefer not to megathread when we can avoid it

Megathreads are useful in certain situations but can also be just as detrimental if used improperly. Normal Megathreads inevitably suppress discussion comparatively to various different threads as you...

    1) 'Demote' the threads to comments inside of the megathread.

    2) force (either partially or completely depending on if you're removing relevant threads) the subject's visibility to be reliant on where the megathread's visibility is.

    3) Due to reddit's algorithm a megathread, unless pinned (which we often can't do due to limits), you put a countdown timer on how long the subject remains visible before the megathread itself is off of 'new' and the front page. For this sub that can be anywhere between two hours or two days. This not only prevents some people from contributing at all but also means after a point we as moderators are effectively suppressing a subject by redirecting it to a dead thread.

As such we are confident in megathreading quick topics like server RIPS and take my energy threads because by nature they aren't a long-lived subject. Subjects like Sirus or performance though are the exact opposite, they are 'long-burn' subjects (for better or worse) and are very hard to consolidate normally without inadvertently suppressing the conversation.

That's not to say it's impossible though! Some subreddits have done creative things with the wiki functions and other methods for 'long-burn' subjects just like this. They have made their own initiatives to tackle frequent posting without sacrificing much or any visibility. But would these strategies work for r/pathofexile with its league 3-month cycle and rapid expansions?

Blah blah blah, so what's the actual problem??

As the sub grows, we've been seeing more support for megathreading being a better alternative to allowing frequent topic/posts from bogging down the sub. Both in the modteam and the sub proper. It's definitely not unanimous but it's considerably more support than when I first started as a mod here. In other words, we're considering changing our megathread policy, so we'd like hear your thoughts.

So with that, how do you feel about megathreads? What would you like to see consolidated, if anything? Does another sub you frequent handle megathreads in a creative way?

I am retiring from race organizing - Thanks everyone

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 10:02 AM PDT

Thanks everyone for watching the most recent Kammell race and I will attempt to make this post not so long-winded, however, brevity is not generally my strongest attribute.

I have decided I will be retiring from race organizing and will likely retire from racing. Aside from being old, which probably makes the other negatives more glaring, I have come to a somewhat frustrating standstill.

I had originally begun the Kammell races out of simply me wanting to play in a race that was similar to leaguestart at the advent of the private league system. These races have always been made with racers in mind first and foremost. This is why there was never a requirement for streaming and any decision was made for the integrity and enjoyment of those playing. The first Kammell race is widely considered the most competitive race in the history of PoE and the excitement from that first race and the couple that followed has kept me going until this point. It's no surprise the most competitive race was won by Steelmage btw.

The first race was 16 months ago and since then the negativity from the general PoE community toward racing, the racers and lack of innovation from GGG has been quite difficult. I could go into more detail, but this is not meant to be a negative post. That being said, if PoE racing is to progress to a healthy future these will be the major points that will need to be addressed.

In terms of the positive, I have made many friends and have seen many people shine and grow with the races. I'd like to thank the friends I've made:

Guccipradas, Leaf, Ventrua, Karv, Goratha, Tryxt, Uber, Ziz, Steelmage, Viyro, Embbu (I'm sure I'm missing people) and the rest of Ducksquad in no particular order. In that list but as exclusions are Tyty and Tie who have been immense success stories through their efforts and am happy for both of them for their constant pushing of PoE racing.

Tie showed everyone what was capable in PoE racing and was a great friend to me, an exceptionally honest and genuine person.

Thanks to Pert, Brittle, Ziggy, Octavian, Yolonou, Muqve, PhoenixFire, Tarke, Kane, zug0, Raiz and Faderon for all the immense help with the casts and behind the scenes.

Thanks to GGG, Chris Wilson and Bex for taking the time to support and respond to a completely unknown person from the community with a passion for a niche part of the game.

I'd like to thank everyone who watched, participated and helped donate to the prize pools. The prize pools for the races totaled $6,503 which is a tremendous amount of support.

One of the major things I can be most proud of is the biggest reason I can give for why I will be retiring. The team that has worked on these races throughout that time has set up a wonderful system that will likely be a large part of how PoE racing will be handled in the future. The casting tools, organization, work ethic and strategy behind race organizing.

It's no secret to the people who know me I've largely moved onto other games over the last year. I've found it slightly baffling and disappointing how little has been done in racing in the interim, however, this appears to be changing with the upcoming Method races and GGG potentially hiring an employee for racing focus.

I am just one person and not a particularly intelligent person at that. My original race had no prize pool. I had tacked on a cash prize late but everyone had already signed up to play. Racers want to race and are starving for content. There are already systems in place to help you if you feel like there should be more races. I'm sure most of you are more than capable of putting together something yourself and I hope to be proud of the community in the future.

Hopefully, with me retiring, someone or some group of people will feel the urgency to put something together themselves and not feel as though I need to come and save the day from the dearth of racing content.

I won't be falling off the Earth and if you need me in the future for some advice on organizing it won't be hard to get a hold of me.

    Thanks and much love,

    Will Clark (Kammell) :)

The further I get the more unplayable this game gets, I don't know what else I can do outside of upgrading my computer which is off the table.

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 07:00 AM PDT

    RX 580 8gb

    16gb Ram

    i5-4690k

    PoE is on SSD

I have sound effects disabled, dynamic resolution, every single setting that can be set to low is, and still I get completely destroyed by the frame rate in this game. I have AAA titles installed that run 144fps in some serious situations and this top down IARPG is running at 5fps!!!

I can't progress further - not because my character is weak, or I am missing fundamental aspects of the gameplay, but because with more difficult content, comes larger packs, more spell effects, etc and it just shits down its own throat and I end up fighting through 2-3 fps dying to easy little piddly shit.

What the hell am I supposed to do. Spend $500 to upgrade my CPU Motherboard and Ram just to play a 6 year old ARPG?? Seems a bit fucking ridiculous. Is there some hidden setting somewhere that reminds this game that it's from 2013?

    Loot from 21 blighted maps

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 10:31 AM PDT

    Loot from 21 blighted maps

Decided to run my 21 blighted maps i got while playing and record the profits. Not a huge sample size and they were of various tier (from white to red)

    Investment

    176c in map value
    21c in chisels (1c:4)
    105c in oils (21 x 5c) verdant, violet, crimson
13c reroll bad mods (no regen, reflect, 60% lower recovery)
    315c total spent

    Build and run times

    Running a budget(ish) herald build, POB: https://pastebin.com/P2zddsH0

+-10 minutes rolling and preparing maps and quad

5 minutes blight encounter + 1/2 minutes clean up + looting per map

1-2 minutes between maps of vendoring + stashing

Total time is around 180 minutes - 3 hours

    Drops

    https://preview.redd.it/rj9am6ya2tt41.png?width=641&format=png&auto=webp&s=3b8e541a8aa54ebead04eed970d1f1fcc7a645a2

Missing spots between maps and cards are lower tier maps, which were messing up my currencycop as they were counted as highest tier even when white. Total gain from them was around 40c.

All 6 sockets, talismans showing on filter, shitty uniques etc. were vendored, which made up most of the alchs and jewellers.

Only noteable drops were a 6l silverbranch (18c), bisco leash (24c) and stampede boots (30c) and a saints treasure (27c).

    https://preview.redd.it/0t34so6v2tt41.png?width=687&format=png&auto=webp&s=36dd25043e694bbd786ebd670e764f9c1045e0e5

The final currencycop counting puts me at 1694c in drops. Its important to note that most of this in in low tier oils, which probably wont sell. With value of maps its a total of 1734c.

When taking away all lower tier oils it puts drops at 1254c, 1294c with maps.

    Profit

    With oils: 1419c - 473c or 3.2ex per hour

Without oils: 979c - 326c or 2.2 ex per hour

    Notes

Decent part of it is small currency, mediocre cards/essences/scarabs which probably wont sell, so its not that liquid.

Will probably gamble away the 60 stacked decks and inform on any notable drops.

Not sure what to do with the oils, someone pm me if you wanna buy them :D might just put them up for sale and see, but will probably just end up converting them to higher tier and selling. (Or just keep them in my stash till league end lol)

Kammell's SSFHC Delirium Race to 80 - April 18th Race - Results, Rip Clips and Recollections

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 07:39 PM PDT

    Hi, everyone!

The first Kammell Race for Delirium is now complete! I'm posting on behalf of Kammell to wrap up the event and provide a resource for those who may have missed the big day! However, I want to extend a big thank you to all who participated and watched the race! There wouldn't have been a race without you! Also, a big thank you to all working behind the scenes as well!

This race was particularly deadly, and not just due to the league mechanic. There were many deaths across the board to old nemeses such as a Freeze/DD box and Innocence in addition to some new juiced-up bosses. While a lot of the previous racing meta remains intact, there were some variations in ascendancy as well as skills this time around which was neat to see!

    Congratulations to our winners!

    tytykiller - 1st - 4:43 - $393
    MeshaMaaN - 2nd - 5:21 - $163.75
    Minimeow - 3rd - 5:22 - $98.25

Thank you to Muqve as always for the casting tool, which allows us all to enjoy PoE Racing!
Our support crew today was Pertinax and Tryxt. Thank you both!

Thank you all again! Kammell's next race is still currently being decided and possible formats are being discussed! Full details will be released by Kammell on the PoE forums, so keep an eye out!

Until then, the next two weekends will hold more PoE racing excitement as Method kicks off their Rush Season 1!

    See you next time!

That time someone handed me a Mirror of Kalandra

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 06:13 PM PDT

So I've played PoE since alpha. I'm a decent player, cleared endgame multiple seasons but I never had a mirror worthy item let alone a mirror. Due to the amount of currency this league shits out, I decided I would get into crafting alot more with the free time we currently have. And so I crafted this amulet. I put it in a public tab for 30 mins, got about 20 PMs. I knew it was good but was unsure of its worth so I decided to slap a 1 mirr tag on it for funsies. About 30 mins later, a korean symbol nametag whispers me to buy my ammy @ 1 mirror. I'm fucking shooked but I still would love to keep my amulet and not sure if he's legit, so I tell him I can offer mirror service. Guy literally just says ''ok'', invites me, gets in my Hideout and straight up hands me a Mirror and 30 exalted. NO QUESTIONS ASKED. I took a sweet minute to copy it, making sure i wasnt fucking up anything, then gave back. Still shaking from it 30 mins later. Thanks for coming to my TEDtalk.
